@@1kSedrick the first x17 r2 i got was a dud, waited 2 months for it to arrive, the screen turned black all the time, sent it back and they sent me a new replacement and i absolutely love it, mine was about $5500 USD though, fully loaded... love the mechanical keyboard, i was looking for a alternative laptop that had this and couldnt find one, that was the main reason i got a replacement instead of buying something else... worth it though...
@@1kSedrick m15 is a must have! I got mine 1 month ago, no problems so far! Thermals always can be regulated in TCC offset controller, you lose a little bit of performance but its ok! With the -15 option in the TCC offset I got in warzone 85°C CPU and 74°C GPU with stable 100fps. Battery is not that good, keep that in mind, specs says 5h, but most users including myself got less than 3 hours.
I will keep my kidney and get an m15:)) it looks better in some ways, portability and connectivity. the only way the x excepts is thermals and will see how to manage that. thanks for the review and it was so helpful

@@triazoondatrack only issue is heating. I am doing TCC 15 that reduces tempratur of cpu by 15. And using throttlestop to undervolting. Its a lot better now. Waiting for thermal paste to arrive.
I have the R5 with a 3070 and I did a few adjustments on the TCC and put a laptop cooler in and adjusted some of the settings in the balance and it runs great I don't have any issues. I don't personally like the fact that there's only one color option for the x17 and 15.

I heard they really improved the thermals in the 2022 version for the m15, to the point that it stays relatively cool (below 80C), even during intense gaming sessions.
they have improved the cooling but Dell still allow the CPU to hit 100c! they do it on every model to squeeze the performance out of it. You can change this in BIOS though
AHHHHH I ordered a X17 a month ago but it's still weeks away due to delays with Dell. This last month has been torture waiting for it, and it's still a few weeks away! 😭
Seems a common issue for all x17, the speakers tremble on the chassis making this this weirdo sound, dell has made a update just limitating the highest volume level😂

I'm happy with my m15r4, they didn't have the m15r6 at the time when I bought it but this thing still kicks ass with the 125-140W 3070. Shits on my 1060 laptop in every aspect, I can play 90% of my games in 4k and all the others in 1440.
Quick question, I have been thinking of getting an m15 r6, but I have seen quite a few reviews saying that it overheats. So I am still not sure, because I would feel that the r6 would have better cooling than the r4 as it is newer. Does your r4 overheat? And does it affect performance?
The big difference, to me, is that the m15 allows you to upgrade RAM and add an extra SSD, whereas the x15 (NOT 17) has the ram soldered in and one SSD slot
I just ordered a m15 r6 with i5 11th gen, rtx 3060 6gb, 16gb ram, 512 gb storage. It cost me about 1040 pound inclusive of 2 years warranty and accidentally damage protection. Initially thought of getting the asus rog strix ryzen 7 6800 with rtx 3050, but the chance of owning an alienware laptop for the first time is smtg that i cant resist especially when the price is not much differences than the asus. Plus, the rtx 3060 is smtg that i see a base requirement for any gaming laptop. In terms of heat, im more a console gamer and the laptop is mainly for my work purpose. An additional cooler pad would do some good in keeping the temp at optimum level i believe.
I got an M17 and i absolutely love it. got the 360hz screen, it's okay but i feel like it's a bit overkill, and sometimes i feel like my eyes are playing tricks on me lol.
@@MashITTech Well i might just be paranoid, i woke my laptop from sleep last week and the display was all messed up, the graphics didn't load back up properly, so it looked like the display was busted (if you crack a display sort of thing), i restarted and it was fine but since then i just been paranoid I guess and like every little blip on the screen, i worry about the GPU possibly failing, but i just played a game and it looked and played fine, so i'm guessing it's all gravy! =P like I said, it's probably my eyes playing tricks on me cuz it' sin my subconscious lol. The display is absolutely beautiful for sure! best laptop i've ever owned, hands down.
@@MashITTech I have done. I might try re-installing the driver or when there's a new update, but i don't think the GPU itself is bad because there are times it's perfectly fine.
@@MashITTech Hey man, when playing games, graphics look fine so it's prob the driver, however, I did notice, when i'm gaming, my battery indicator light flashes yellow as if it was on battery, even if i'm plugged in, after my gaming session, the battery appears to have drained some, despite being plugged into power all the time. Is this normal behavior?
Great video as always, Dave. BTW, I was able to figure out the tron rainbow wave on my X17. I found out that it’s ONLY available if you are choosing “all” in the settings and then choose “rainbow wave”. If you customize individually, tron can’t have rainbow wave. Weird

Its worth noting that with the 3070 you can undervolt these chips a lot to get better sustained performance. Also to extend battery life and get an extra 2 hours (in my experience) I have turbo boost off and max CPU state at 85% on battery (on the AMD 5900HX)

The better thermal management of the X17 means that you also have more overhead for undervolting/overclocking. I am not going to say that my X17 with RTX 3070 is going to match the an RTX 3080 in the X17, but this overhead and the higher wattage makes the X17 with RTX 3070 perform as good as 15.6" machines with the RTX3080, and here, the price differential is not so much. The cooling of the X17 is it's real superpower. I can get great performance out of MSFS Flight Simulator 2020 without having to have my fans running full blase.
Your Timespy scores are pretty low, are you running the performance fan mode? Try the balanced fan mode, it actually gets better performance. There is an Alienware online document that explains why.
@@MashITTech What I’ve been noticing, is that on performance mode GPU clocks stay higher, but CPU clocks much lower. For balanced mode, GPU clocks are lower and CPU clocks are higher. In Call of Duty Vanguard (using Afterburner to record average FPS), I am noticing about 10 FPS more on the balanced profile. I am on the 360Hz monitor, I would be willing to bet the performance mode has better results for the 4K display. Since you would be less CPU bound with 4K. I get about 10,500 CPU score in Timespy using balanced mode.

I ordered a 17 three months ago and all I’ve gotten are delay notices. I’m guessing mine is parked off the coast of California right now and I’ll be lucky to get it before Alienware releases the new model
1:45 " No Sense " ? i am using a 17" laptop with so many ports on either side . with all the cables sticking out right + left equals to = I HAVE TO WIDEN MY ARMS on both sides so as not to hinder or bend any cables . picture this : busy hands will in many ways touch and "disturb" those cables . it will . and if ethernet cable is interrupted ? internet may get cut off . same with other cables . having cables at the back is a "WORK SAVER" if not "LIFE SAVER" .
Before I eventually put my order in for the x17, I was debating between this and the thinkpad x1 gen4. In the end the delays (to the x1) and offers on the x17 swayed me in that direction. I'm glad I did now as the prices for similarly speced thinkpad x1 gen4 models have been about 1k more and it looks like it doesnt even have as good a thermal solution as the x17
No, I was also looking forward to reviewing the x1 but the U.K. prices are a joke! £2.7k for the base model. And watching others test it and seeing how awful the throttling is I am glad I didn’t bother

Sure. I am just waiting for my new x15 to be delivered. I initially bought the x15 base model and was disappointed so now have the 3070 and qhd screen on order
It was ok, not as good as the 1080p 165hz I got on the m15r6. Plus the qhd was so good I regretted not ordering it. Also the 3060 with its 90w disappointed me, the 3070 gets 110w and element 31 compound
@@MashITTech Not yet. It's been 12 days since the order was confirmed and it hasn't even gone in production yet. They are saying they are facing supply constraints. Its estimated to arrive on 13th October.
@@danishajaib1516 I hate to say it but there's no way you'll receive it by October 13th if it hasn't even entered production yet. I ordered my x17 on September 1st and its build was complete on September 3rd. Shipped September 8th, and now nothing has happened since it shipped. Tracking only shows a shipping label was created September 4th. Gonna be another 2 or 3 weeks for delivery. You can count on 3 - 4 weeks wait time once your laptop has been shipped.

Great video. I was wondering if anyone could tell me which would perform better: X17 with a 3070 (140W) or an R6 with a 3080 (125W)? I don't know much about computers but it seems that the better cooling in the X17 and higher power supply might result in better performance than a slightly higher graphics chip but lower power output in the R6.

Brilliant videos. I am just trying to decide on which flagship to buy. Despite the shortcomings but the thermals and attention to details is good on the x17, if i buy alienware thanks to this video i will stick to x series. Could you compare x series to flagships from other brands?
My high density ram on my x17 3070 has 1560 single core and 8300 multi core on reboot with nothing opened. Switched to crucial ram 32 gig and got 1560 single core and 9600 multi core. Cuda score stayed the same since its based on gpu performance and it was about the same for cuda score
Wow your single core score was good for density! But that’s a nice improvement on the multi moving to the crucial. Such a shame dell are supplies the high density ram on such an expensive computer
Why not? They are both solid gaming machines, the r4 has better speakers and port locations, the x17 has better fans and cpu but ultimately for gaming a 3070 would make the biggest difference
I sure will mate when they make the m17r5 price sensible in the UK. At the moment they want £3700 which is hundreds more than the x17 😂

I have tested them both loads, they both have individual reviews and I have done plenty of content for X17. What issues on thunderbolt are you getting? I connected to my LG 4k display fine over thunderbolt with the latest BIOS. I also tested it for power delivery which it unfortunately doesn't have which I covered in the original review 👍
@@MashITTech Many owners cannot get video out of the Thunderbolt port, including myself. Tech support told me that the Thunderbolt port requires a dock, which is a lie. This is trying with many devices, including video devices that are native Thunderbolt. And including DisplayPort devices using various cables and adapters.
That’s odd. And this was only on the latest bios? I am sure I have been running my LG 4K on the latest but you have me doubting myself now so will try and find time to test it again later.
@@MashITTech I just got my system Thursday, but from what I have read from others theirs broke after a specific BIOS version. And there are a discussions on Dell Community where even some docks have issues. But tech support actually told me that oh it only gets video with a dock.
for most people I think the m15r6 is the better choice. It is more powerful (the RTX card has higher TGP) has better ports and is much cheaper. The only reason to buy the X15 is because you want the lighting, slimmest alienware possible
@@divyandhingra5000 it does run hot but performance is good. Dell let’s then run to 100c before throttling it back unlike others who throttle them earlier. You can change that in bios if you don’t like it
First of all i would like you say you did an AMAZING video comparing them both. You got a new subscriber 👍. I needed your advice and it will be of a huge help for me. I am planning on buying the Alienware x17 with the Core i9 11980H with the RTX 3080. I am a video editor so i use premier pro all the time and don’t do gaming. Wanted to ask when i saw your video you were testing cinebench and temps reached 100. Is 100 temperature normal? And if i use this processor for editing then will it heatup till 100? And how much can a 11980H temperature go till it is bad for the processor? Your advice will be of great help. Hoping to hear from you soon. Cheers!
Hi Syed, glad you enjoyed the video. In answer to your questions. I would not recommend the i9 cpu, the i7 is actually unlocked and can perform as well as the i9 (check out my x17 deep dive video for more information). Dell allows the cpu to boost fully until the system hits 100c before throttling it back as intel states it is safe to just over 100c. Apple have been doing this for years without issue. If you are not happy with 100c you can change the TCC in bios (again I have a video on this) which lets you set your own throttle point (say 90c as an example) which will decrease temps with a slight loss in performance

3 weeks. 2 x17 and 1 x15 and 1 m15r6 all about 3 weeks but we have an x15 with qhd on order which has been delayed until November and we ordered in august
It’s luck of the draw on the config you order at the moment. If they have stock it arrives quickly but lots of the config options are on back order. The qhd screen is holding up my x15
its veter to buy it with 8 gigs of ram.. so you pay less and throw it away to buy real ram..rather then being stuck with 32 gigs overpriced garbage ram.
A lot would depend on price and availability. If they were the same I would take the m15 with QHD screen (one of the best laptop screens at the moment) and you get the dell onsite warranty (Asus warranty is a bit hit and miss)
I bought this model which I am going to return when I realize that the 16GB RAM memory is integrated into the motherboard or is soldered and cannot be updated or the day it fails it cannot be easily replaced
Thank you for the data: Shame the 15" out performs the 17" in games because the 15 comes with QHD and the 17 comes with FHD, I just wish DELL had put QHD Screens in the 17", I seen a video of someone already upgraded their X17 R1 to a QHD screen. On second thought this 365 Hz is incredible it might be a mistake, I will just get an external QHD or UHD screen.

I have both, Ordered x17 with 3080 with 4k first day it was released to place an order. I love it, but I do travel a lot (Pilot as occupation) x17 was too big and heavy, and didn't want to take the chance of breaking +$4.5k laptop so I got r6 M15 in September. (With 3070 and 2k display) I see other reviewers bash on Alienware, but I wanted something that I can upgrade ram, not something soldered on the motherboard, and having +10 mechanical keyboard, I wanted that mechanical keyboard on Alienware. I am satisfied.
I did consider that but the x15 is more focused on thin and light and has a lower tgp gfx. I have another x15 on order and when it arrives I can also compare them for you
I got into a dispute with Dell over the upgradability that was promised on the revision 1 area 51m that I purchased when they initially released. I understand there’s a lot of people that dislike Dell, and they can be a pain to deal with. But they actually offered to send me a max speccd x17 for compensation, as they’re currently involved in a few class action lawsuits in a couple of states in the US over this exact issue. It’s been in production for about a month. After watching your reviews I’m pretty excited. Hopefully buy the time it arrives they’ve released a bios update allowing advanced optimus on the UHD panel option. One can dream right??
The Area 51 dream was a real shame! I still love my area 51m r2 but I went into it knowing dell wouldn’t allow us to upgrade, dell have always failed in this area even in the days of mxm. But at least they are trying to make it right for you. The x17 is a really solid laptop and I hope you enjoy it, the performance is incredible especially because of how thin it is

(Hits 90c> and immediately throttles, even after thermal repaste) As that 2080 and i9 combo was pretty powerful when it worked as intended. Thanks for the great content. @@justswitched8841 not quite that easy. But more or less yes. I just filed a claim with BBB, as they’re already embroiled in CLA’s in California and a few other states. I feel like Dell knows they messed up and misled consumers big time with the area 51m series, so they were very accommodating and pleasant to deal with so far. I was impressed with the outcome because I did not expect them to offer an upgrade. I was just expecting a refund or a replacement. But they no longer offer the area 51m with an i9 or 2080 configuration. So I argued that it wasn’t really a fair upgrade to be given a system of lower specification that what I currently had, and they seemed to agree as well. I don’t have a tracking number for the order as it’s technically a “service order” so I have no idea when it will arrive. But they claimed 30-40 business days. I don’t mind the wait
@@campbellgray120 I had an area 51m. I had the I 9700k and 2070. Run great and thermals were the best I'd ever seen on a laptop. Sold it though. Wasn't really impressed with the build quality and the cheap plastic they use around the bezel and the front of the laptop.All I did was wipe the bezel and it got scratched.
i went from a Alienware m15 2019 laptop to a ASUS ROG Strix G17 g713 gaming laptop (2021) and I can say I love my asus laptop way more, better cooling, better performance, even asus rgb software works good

Something not fully spec'ed because I basically play Cities:Skylines almost exclusively. When put to 0(100°c) was 13621

What about the fan noise ?
@@STR-ENGNR fan noise is ok. 80 percent of the time is dead quiet because it idles around 38-45c. It only starts ramping up when working on something.

I heard they really improved the thermals in the 2022 version for the m15, to the point that it stays relatively cool (below 80C), even during intense gaming sessions.
they have improved the cooling but Dell still allow the CPU to hit 100c! they do it on every model to squeeze the performance out of it. You can change this in BIOS though
I have the AMD version and I agree. I undervolted my 3070 while overclocking and the thermals are great

I'm happy with my m15r4, they didn't have the m15r6 at the time when I bought it but this thing still kicks ass with the 125-140W 3070. Shits on my 1060 laptop in every aspect, I can play 90% of my games in 4k and all the others in 1440.
Quick question, I have been thinking of getting an m15 r6, but I have seen quite a few reviews saying that it overheats. So I am still not sure, because I would feel that the r6 would have better cooling than the r4 as it is newer. Does your r4 overheat? And does it affect performance?

The big difference, to me, is that the m15 allows you to upgrade RAM and add an extra SSD, whereas the x15 (NOT 17) has the ram soldered in and one SSD slot

I just ordered a m15 r6 with i5 11th gen, rtx 3060 6gb, 16gb ram, 512 gb storage. It cost me about 1040 pound inclusive of 2 years warranty and accidentally damage protection. Initially thought of getting the asus rog strix ryzen 7 6800 with rtx 3050, but the chance of owning an alienware laptop for the first time is smtg that i cant resist especially when the price is not much differences than the asus. Plus, the rtx 3060 is smtg that i see a base requirement for any gaming laptop. In terms of heat, im more a console gamer and the laptop is mainly for my work purpose. An additional cooler pad would do some good in keeping the temp at optimum level i believe.

@@MashITTech Well i might just be paranoid, i woke my laptop from sleep last week and the display was all messed up, the graphics didn't load back up properly, so it looked like the display was busted (if you crack a display sort of thing), i restarted and it was fine but since then i just been paranoid I guess and like every little blip on the screen, i worry about the GPU possibly failing, but i just played a game and it looked and played fine, so i'm guessing it's all gravy! =P like I said, it's probably my eyes playing tricks on me cuz it' sin my subconscious lol. The display is absolutely beautiful for sure! best laptop i've ever owned, hands down.
That sounds like a duff gfx driver to me, I have had that exact same issue before. Try using geforce experience to update the driver 👍
@@MashITTech I have done. I might try re-installing the driver or when there's a new update, but i don't think the GPU itself is bad because there are times it's perfectly fine.
@@MashITTech Hey man, when playing games, graphics look fine so it's prob the driver, however, I did notice, when i'm gaming, my battery indicator light flashes yellow as if it was on battery, even if i'm plugged in, after my gaming session, the battery appears to have drained some, despite being plugged into power all the time. Is this normal behavior?
Great video as always, Dave. BTW, I was able to figure out the tron rainbow wave on my X17. I found out that it’s ONLY available if you are choosing “all” in the settings and then choose “rainbow wave”. If you customize individually, tron can’t have rainbow wave. Weird

Its worth noting that with the 3070 you can undervolt these chips a lot to get better sustained performance. Also to extend battery life and get an extra 2 hours (in my experience) I have turbo boost off and max CPU state at 85% on battery (on the AMD 5900HX)

The better thermal management of the X17 means that you also have more overhead for undervolting/overclocking. I am not going to say that my X17 with RTX 3070 is going to match the an RTX 3080 in the X17, but this overhead and the higher wattage makes the X17 with RTX 3070 perform as good as 15.6" machines with the RTX3080, and here, the price differential is not so much. The cooling of the X17 is it's real superpower. I can get great performance out of MSFS Flight Simulator 2020 without having to have my fans running full blase.
You’d think that, but I’ve owned both now, and to my surprise the M15 R5 stays just as cool. And the m15 ids a Ryzen 9!

Your Timespy scores are pretty low, are you running the performance fan mode? Try the balanced fan mode, it actually gets better performance. There is an Alienware online document that explains why.

@@MashITTech What I’ve been noticing, is that on performance mode GPU clocks stay higher, but CPU clocks much lower. For balanced mode, GPU clocks are lower and CPU clocks are higher. In Call of Duty Vanguard (using Afterburner to record average FPS), I am noticing about 10 FPS more on the balanced profile. I am on the 360Hz monitor, I would be willing to bet the performance mode has better results for the 4K display. Since you would be less CPU bound with 4K.
I get about 10,500 CPU score in Timespy using balanced mode.

i am using a 17" laptop with so many ports on either side . with all the cables sticking out right + left equals to = I HAVE TO WIDEN MY ARMS on both sides so as not to hinder or bend any cables .
picture this : busy hands will in many ways touch and "disturb" those cables . it will . and if ethernet cable is interrupted ? internet may get cut off . same with other cables . having cables at the back is a "WORK SAVER" if not "LIFE SAVER" .

Before I eventually put my order in for the x17, I was debating between this and the thinkpad x1 gen4. In the end the delays (to the x1) and offers on the x17 swayed me in that direction. I'm glad I did now as the prices for similarly speced thinkpad x1 gen4 models have been about 1k more and it looks like it doesnt even have as good a thermal solution as the x17
No, I was also looking forward to reviewing the x1 but the U.K. prices are a joke! £2.7k for the base model. And watching others test it and seeing how awful the throttling is I am glad I didn’t bother
Those light laptops cannot be compared with gaming laptops on performance, they are good at light and stability, only good for mobile office works.

It was ok, not as good as the 1080p 165hz I got on the m15r6. Plus the qhd was so good I regretted not ordering it. Also the 3060 with its 90w disappointed me, the 3070 gets 110w and element 31 compound

@@danishajaib1516 I hate to say it but there's no way you'll receive it by October 13th if it hasn't even entered production yet. I ordered my x17 on September 1st and its build was complete on September 3rd. Shipped September 8th, and now nothing has happened since it shipped. Tracking only shows a shipping label was created September 4th. Gonna be another 2 or 3 weeks for delivery. You can count on 3 - 4 weeks wait time once your laptop has been shipped.

Great video. I was wondering if anyone could tell me which would perform better: X17 with a 3070 (140W) or an R6 with a 3080 (125W)? I don't know much about computers but it seems that the better cooling in the X17 and higher power supply might result in better performance than a slightly higher graphics chip but lower power output in the R6.

Go with the R6 3080, great machine and not worth the premium for a computer with a lower model gpu. I've tried both with 3080s and kept the R6

My high density ram on my x17 3070 has 1560 single core and 8300 multi core on reboot with nothing opened. Switched to crucial ram 32 gig and got 1560 single core and 9600 multi core. Cuda score stayed the same since its based on gpu performance and it was about the same for cuda score
Wow your single core score was good for density! But that’s a nice improvement on the multi moving to the crucial. Such a shame dell are supplies the high density ram on such an expensive computer

You compared the models but you didn't really test them. The R6 has issues with video on Thunderbolt once the BIOS update is applied.
I have tested them both loads, they both have individual reviews and I have done plenty of content for X17. What issues on thunderbolt are you getting? I connected to my LG 4k display fine over thunderbolt with the latest BIOS. I also tested it for power delivery which it unfortunately doesn't have which I covered in the original review 👍
@@MashITTech Many owners cannot get video out of the Thunderbolt port, including myself. Tech support told me that the Thunderbolt port requires a dock, which is a lie. This is trying with many devices, including video devices that are native Thunderbolt. And including DisplayPort devices using various cables and adapters.
That’s odd. And this was only on the latest bios? I am sure I have been running my LG 4K on the latest but you have me doubting myself now so will try and find time to test it again later.
@@MashITTech I just got my system Thursday, but from what I have read from others theirs broke after a specific BIOS version. And there are a discussions on Dell Community where even some docks have issues. But tech support actually told me that oh it only gets video with a dock.

for most people I think the m15r6 is the better choice. It is more powerful (the RTX card has higher TGP) has better ports and is much cheaper. The only reason to buy the X15 is because you want the lighting, slimmest alienware possible

@@divyandhingra5000 it does run hot but performance is good. Dell let’s then run to 100c before throttling it back unlike others who throttle them earlier. You can change that in bios if you don’t like it

I am planning on buying the Alienware x17 with the Core i9 11980H with the RTX 3080. I am a video editor so i use premier pro all the time and don’t do gaming. Wanted to ask when i saw your video you were testing cinebench and temps reached 100. Is 100 temperature normal? And if i use this processor for editing then will it heatup till 100? And how much can a 11980H temperature go till it is bad for the processor? Your advice will be of great help.

Hi Syed, glad you enjoyed the video. In answer to your questions. I would not recommend the i9 cpu, the i7 is actually unlocked and can perform as well as the i9 (check out my x17 deep dive video for more information). Dell allows the cpu to boost fully until the system hits 100c before throttling it back as intel states it is safe to just over 100c. Apple have been doing this for years without issue. If you are not happy with 100c you can change the TCC in bios (again I have a video on this) which lets you set your own throttle point (say 90c as an example) which will decrease temps with a slight loss in performance
Undervolt it and temps will go 85C tops on max load.

3 weeks. 2 x17 and 1 x15 and 1 m15r6 all about 3 weeks but we have an x15 with qhd on order which has been delayed until November and we ordered in august

It’s luck of the draw on the config you order at the moment. If they have stock it arrives quickly but lots of the config options are on back order. The qhd screen is holding up my x15

We all thought it was 1 gen 4 and 1 gen 3 as that is what dell service manual states but it turned out to be 2 x gen 4 which was a nice surprise

Why do a lot of gaming laptops still have 16gig ram or lower, when they could at least 32?
its veter to buy it with 8 gigs of ram.. so you pay less and throw it away to buy real ram..rather then being stuck with 32 gigs overpriced garbage ram.

A lot would depend on price and availability. If they were the same I would take the m15 with QHD screen (one of the best laptop screens at the moment) and you get the dell onsite warranty (Asus warranty is a bit hit and miss)

I bought this model which I am going to return when I realize that the 16GB RAM memory is integrated into the motherboard or is soldered and cannot be updated or the day it fails it cannot be easily replaced
Both these models have upgradable ram. It is the x15 or m15r4/m17r4 that has soldered ram
Thank you for the data: Shame the 15" out performs the 17" in games because the 15 comes with QHD and the 17 comes with FHD, I just wish DELL had put QHD Screens in the 17", I seen a video of someone already upgraded their X17 R1 to a QHD screen. On second thought this 365 Hz is incredible it might be a mistake, I will just get an external QHD or UHD screen.

I have both, Ordered x17 with 3080 with 4k first day it was released to place an order. I love it, but I do travel a lot (Pilot as occupation) x17 was too big and heavy, and didn't want to take the chance of breaking +$4.5k laptop so I got r6 M15 in September. (With 3070 and 2k display) I see other reviewers bash on Alienware, but I wanted something that I can upgrade ram, not something soldered on the motherboard, and having +10 mechanical keyboard, I wanted that mechanical keyboard on Alienware. I am satisfied.
You should have compared the x15 vs the m15 r6
I did consider that but the x15 is more focused on thin and light and has a lower tgp gfx. I have another x15 on order and when it arrives I can also compare them for you

I got into a dispute with Dell over the upgradability that was promised on the revision 1 area 51m that I purchased when they initially released. I understand there’s a lot of people that dislike Dell, and they can be a pain to deal with. But they actually offered to send me a max speccd x17 for compensation, as they’re currently involved in a few class action lawsuits in a couple of states in the US over this exact issue. It’s been in production for about a month. After watching your reviews I’m pretty excited. Hopefully buy the time it arrives they’ve released a bios update allowing advanced optimus on the UHD panel option. One can dream right??
The Area 51 dream was a real shame! I still love my area 51m r2 but I went into it knowing dell wouldn’t allow us to upgrade, dell have always failed in this area even in the days of mxm. But at least they are trying to make it right for you. The x17 is a really solid laptop and I hope you enjoy it, the performance is incredible especially because of how thin it is

@@justswitched8841 not quite that easy. But more or less yes. I just filed a claim with BBB, as they’re already embroiled in CLA’s in California and a few other states. I feel like Dell knows they messed up and misled consumers big time with the area 51m series, so they were very accommodating and pleasant to deal with so far. I was impressed with the outcome because I did not expect them to offer an upgrade. I was just expecting a refund or a replacement. But they no longer offer the area 51m with an i9 or 2080 configuration. So I argued that it wasn’t really a fair upgrade to be given a system of lower specification that what I currently had, and they seemed to agree as well. I don’t have a tracking number for the order as it’s technically a “service order” so I have no idea when it will arrive. But they claimed 30-40 business days. I don’t mind the wait
@@campbellgray120 I had an area 51m. I had the I 9700k and 2070. Run great and thermals were the best I'd ever seen on a laptop. Sold it though. Wasn't really impressed with the build quality and the cheap plastic they use around the bezel and the front of the laptop.All I did was wipe the bezel and it got scratched.
