Elie don’t worry. Time travel is indeed such a difficult theme for movies and series but believe me I can’t remember any movie or show that handled it better than Lost. Lost establishes concrete rules about what happens, what can happen, when something happens that minimizes plot holes and paradoxes. It’s seriously the best implementation of time travel concept I’ve seen.
As Daniel said whatever happened, happened and if it didn’t happen can’t happen. Rules will explained in later episodes but he is true that there are no timelines and such. On today's episode of Hey I Know that Place: Rainbow Drive-in the "Chicken" restaurant that Hurley and Sayid are eating at (spoiler, it isn't a Chicken restaurant, though their breaded boneless chicken plate lunch with gravy all over is great). An island institution that is now, unfortunately, overrun with tourists, but to be fair, it was on the verge of closing at one point, so better saved than sorry. By some accounts, Barrack Obama's favorite restaurant on the island. Growing up, my dad would get dinner for us here (back when you could park, order, and leave all within the span of about three minutes), and their mahi mahi plate is still a must have whenever I go back to visit.
Thanks for the brilliant reaction, Elie! It's funny that Locke was the first person who tried to climb up to that Nigerian plane. Now when I remember Locke's dream in the first season about a falling Nigerian plane, that dream now takes on a new meaning
my favorite season. Love the time travel, love sawyer, love all of the survivors really interacting off island and also we get a little more dharma which is always welcome!
16:48 John wouldn’t have remembered in season 1 that he’d already witnessed the plane crash. Because they have been dislodged from time, you’re following along in their new present. John here will remember both instances with the plane because he is experiencing that plane crash. Even though this event is technically before, it still happens after for John because this is his first time experiencing it. I hope this makes sense, but the show will probably do a better job explaining.
I love the rules with time travel in the series. LOST is the best representation of what I believe it would be like. I really hope you enjoy it! (I'm getting close to catching up 🥳)
I think it's interesting that as an audience we have been experiencing LOST non-chronologically right from The Pilot with the flashbacks, as if the very structure of the show was a hint towards things to come for the characters. I've heard from casual viewers that the time travel is what finally got them to stop watching. I genuinely think that a lot of people didn't realize they were watching a sci-fi show or at least they put up with those elements while they were less prominent because the drama was so compelling. People who switched off (whether literally and mentally) because the time skips are confusing at first miss that it is supposed to be confusing at first. We learn what is happening over the course of the episode with the characters. I think people confuse themselves further by using logic established in other media. Forget what Marty and Doc told you, this is a different show where different rules apply (imagine watching Blade and asking why the vampires don't sparkle in the sunlight and date high school girls)
It's boggles the mind. I started watching the show the summer before Season 2 aired. By the time of Walkabout I could tell that it was a sci-fi show in disguise. And I was hooked.
Whatever happened, happened. Daniel always arrived at that hatch door to meet Des. The question is why didn't either of them remember it last season when they met/spoke? My guess on Des is...Similarly to Daniel's over exposure to radiation. Memory loss? Similar to how he forgot who Sayid & Lapidus were, on the chopper. My guess on Daniel is...this isn't Daniels' past memory. Travelling to the past, is actually Daniels present.🙃
The LOST speed run continues! And another great season opener! I like the way they handle the time travel in this show. They lay out the rules quite well and have a couple of great scenes spelling it all out for the audience. In short, recently there have been tons of movies and shows about multi-verses. Lost is a uni-verse. You can't change the past because the uni-verse 'has a way of course correcting'. You can't create a new timeline. Whatever Happened, Happened. At least, that is the way it is explained to us by Faraday and the old lady from the gift shop.
AKA The Terminator Paradox.. The Grandfather Paradox... The Predestination paradox.. Sometimes called the self consistency model of time travel, where time is a closed loop and everything happens the way it always has and always will happen. Well, that is the version of time travel tha Fraraday and the Old Lady have stated thus far. Don't stress about the rules of time travel. You'll put it all together.
This show was always a sci-fi journey in disguise. Time travel was hinted at in S2, I believe... when Hurley and Sayid tune in a radio program from the 1940s. This is the only kind of time travel that makes sense. You can't change anything. What happened, happened. Meaning... If you do something in the past... you were always meant to do that. Like John Locke was always there when the Nigerian plane crashed... he just hadn't experienced it yet from his side of it. The only exception is Desmond, who is uniquely special, as noted
Yes, that's right. I also wanted to remind Elie in the comments about this moment. For me, it's symbolic that Said and Hurley are together in this episode, since they were sitting together in the second season and caught a radio signal. Then Hurley made a joke about time. Elie then drew attention to this point. By the way, I didn't know that they tuned into a radio program from the 1940s
with time travel (in reality and tv/movies) the question is always 'If you went back in time, could you change anything?' - different movies interpret it in different ways - so all time travel movies have different ways of answering that question - lost is no different - so the time travel rules in lost may or may not be the same as other movies. but thats the fun with time travel :)
My definition of LOST: show a spiritual story about karma through the sci-fi story structure. "We are the causes of our own sufferings" - Room 23 video.
Of course, I was interested in how LOST would explain time travel, but it was even more interesting for me to watch how the characters would psychologically cope with it. By the way, a huge time machine, however. More than in the movie back to the future. I wonder where this island came from anyway. How did this island come to be and where did it come from? And what is the purpose of the island? New questions are coming up, and that's great. It's also funny that when I start watching LOST from the first season, at this moment it's hard to believe what events await the characters, Sawyer, Locke and other heroes...
Lost Time Travel? Best Time Travel. Do the writers absolutely nail it? So much that it's main concepts and rules were used in other shows. Hope it answers the question
Elie: "It's seems that we are transitioning in to the full sci-fi..." Did you think it was something more than survival on the Island after plane crush when you was watching s1?
After the grey and gloomy season 4 (I mean the situation with the ship and the military mercenaries) We are entering a bright and colorful season 5. To be honest, when I was waiting for season 5, I thought that Locke and others would walk around the island, and Richard would share the secrets of the island with Locke. But that was not the case. It turns out that Locke immediately disappeared when he was with Richard. I didn't expect this. When I see these jumps in time, my brain seems to refuse to believe that this is happening, most likely the characters are experiencing the same thing. It's hard to believe that this is the same show as the first season. It's a very unusual feeling because of this. This is reminiscent of the situation when a person first got to the moon. By the way, When Locke was walking around the island against the background of a wide view of the island, at the moment when he saw the plane, Locke at that moment reminded me of Alice, who got into wonderland. It seems that John Locke witnessed what he dreamed of. Even if it wasn't exactly what he expected
As far as the public is concerned, Kate got pregnant before the crash from a hookup or old boyfriend. They don’t know the relationship between her and Jack other than she “helped saved him” in the “crash” Regarding the time travel thing. You have to ask yourself what would the consequences be if you went back and changed something. For this particular episode. Let’s look one thing If Locke somehow did manage to get up to that plane but caused the plane to fall - none of the events in 1x19 would have taken place. Boone wouldn’t have died. He wouldn’t have used that radio to make contact with the tail section survivors. Locke wouldn’t have had that breakdown that caused him to bang on the hatch door leading to Desmond to turn on the light. If you recall Desmond was moments away from killing himself before he heard Lockes pounding. He would have succeeded and would have caused something catastrophic due to the button not being pushed. It would have also changed a lot of things later on and as we saw at the end of the episode, Desmond is pretty important right now.
"I'm gonna stop you right there, Scott. Are you seriously telling me that your plan to save the universe is based on "Back to the Future?" (Tony Stark, 2019)
Daniel talking to Desmond isn't changing anything. Whatever happened, happened and whatever will happen, will happen. You can't change the future because the future is technically the past for someone else and thus you can't change their past All of these years and I'm still thinking about the rules of time travel with this show.
This isn't quite right. For most people whatever happened, happened is the rule but, as Daniel states, Desmond is special (because of the hatch explosion) so for him things in his past can change. That's why he didn't recognise Daniel when they first met and only remembers them meeting years later once Daniel changed Desmond's past.
@@BeingTheHuntYes. But I was specifically referring to the post episode discussion were Elie pondered if Daniel changed the future by talking to Desmond. I did my best to be clear in my comment but dang is hard. Especially because I have choose what I say carefully to avoid accidental spoilers. And it was 5 in the morning and my coffee hadn't kicked in yet.
Desmond is special. And it shows in this episode. When the characters changed times, they saw light and hear a sound. But people of the time in question do not see this light or hear this sound, like Ethan when Locke changed of time. However, Desmond hears and sees something when Faraday changed of time. Special. Lost's temporal rules are simple and are similar to those of the film The Time Machine in 2002. Any attempt by time travelers to modify the past will only have the effect of creating their own past. It’s not the MCU. 🤣 Even if I also love the specific vision of temporal travel in Marvel.
Don't worry about not knowing "the rules" of time travel. There are different theories depicted in movies/literature. Lost will take you through theirs. No need to be a quantum physicist to watch Lost ;))
What "Back to the Future" Franchise and "Lost" did with Time Travel are two VERY DIFFERENT concepts. In Back to the Future Marty McFly was able to go back and successfully alter the entire course of his past in order to for him to have a better present and future. In "Lost" what Im dissecting based on Daniel Faraday's speech is even if you tried to go change the past, no matter how many different ways you try to do it will fail everytime. The outcome will always end the same with Oceanic 815 crashing and The Freighter finds the Island so on and so forth aka Course Correction. The phrase "Whatever happened, happened" is drilled into our subconcisness during this chapter in the series. What I like about Season 5 we are seeing different points in time of The Island's history. The last two chapters in Lost series (Season 5 Time Travel and whatever Season 6 is going to be) are a rollercoaster ride. Do you have a notebook Elie? Taking a few handwritten notes is not a bad idea especially if you putting all the pieces of the Lost Mythology together.
And yet his parents still bought the exact same house? And Marty still had the same clothes and mannerisms? Because of Lost, my brain can no longer accept the ending of Back To The Future.
Like other comments, the time travel does get explained as we move forward in the season. The only show that I feel does time travel better than Lost is Netflix's Dark. Where the creators most definitely were inspired by Lost.
No spoilers What if everything desmond has learned since the hatch explosion is the theme of Lost? What if you were to apply that theme, the Desmond/charlie storyarc and what they came to realize, to everything you dont understand? What did we learn from that story ... what did Desmond learn about affecting things? He could interact and affect the future but he learned the universe will always course correct. But then with help of Charlie he realized if an inevitable is going to happen what if the knowledge is a blessing not a curse ... what if one can use the knowledge of the inevitable to control it so that it happens on ones terms for the greater good. Now again .... what if you applied that choice across the story so far and the story you have yet to see. First and foremost apply that to the doings of an island that "wont let you die", "isnt done with you yet", and vice versa "if the island wants her dead boy, she'll be dead". Then say Alex. Was she supposed to die like charlie? Did the island actually put her in a position to have life she wasnt supposed to have so her inevitable death could serve the greatest good? How about boone? Did he survive a plane crash only to die from injuries from a plane crashing so he would die for a greater good? What about Shannon? What about the destiny Locke learned in this episode? Now apply that theme, that story to the rules of time travel. Wouldnt that mean they interact with time, with events, with people .... they can try to change things ... but the universe will always course correct. Yes, Whatever happened happened but what if you used that knowledge to create the best possible scenario so that what happened meant something?
Time travel was handled best in the movie Primer. And in second place would be Lost. Forget about Back To Future. I love that movie but Lost has made me see so many plot holes in that film. Just remember what Daniel said, "whatever happened, happened". Keep that in your head and have faith in the writers. This season is going to be so much fun.
Time travel…everyone is fascinated by it and everyone fears it. It brings order into chaos, which makes us all feel strange and confused. Sort of like this series.
I would just like to say the basic concept for this shows time travel was done first in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban. Now you could argue this show expanded on it and made it better. Though Harry Potter did it first. Unless someone knows of the same time travel concept that was used earlier.
Re the compass that points north, the only significance* in all reality is that you actually trod on/spoiled a joke, no more no less, with an unfortunately (perfectly) timed pause. 😅 *Yes I know Young John/Richard's Choice etc IS pertinent but watch it again and it's just & only Richard ripping the piss out of John for asking a dumb question 😂
Everything that has happened already happened. Maybe one of the reasons the Others were so interested in Locke is because Ethan remembered him disappearing in the jungle years b4 815 crashed
So just to put it in the clearest terms: Lost Rules vs Back to the Future Rules -- In Back to the Future, Marty's actions could change things. Or in Daniel's terms, Marty could create a "new street." Hence his family being improved after the first film, the alternate 1985 in the second film, the ravine being renamed in the third film, etc. In Lost, "whatever happened, happened." Let that be your mantra. Similar to what happened to Charlie -- if they attempt to change something "the universe will course correct." Hence, John being shot by Ethan before he could climb up to Yemi's plane -- because no one went into the plane until Boone. John cannot change that. The universe found a way to course correct. "Whatever Happened, Happened" is the motto of the entire season. Keep that in your head until the last second of the finale, it's really the most important phrase of the year.
Endgame started with similar rules to Lost, if you remember the scene where they are talking about it. Hulk tells them all they cannot create an alternate timeline. The Ancient One warned him about taking the Infinity Stones out of their place in time and causing a branch, and Hulk assured her they'd put the stones back where they got them. But also remember, Loki grabbed a tesseract in that film and did create a branch, which lead to the Loki show and the sacred timeline breaking into a multiverse. So Endgame/MCU rules are sort of an amalgamation ... started out as Lost rules, but then evolved into Back to the Future rules. The difference though between Endgame and Back to the Future is, Marty's "new street" overwrote the old, but MCU is a "multiverse," parellel timelines, or "branches." Did that make sense or did I just make it more confusing lol.
We’ve had flashback episodes, we’ve had flash forward episodes, we’ve even had episodes with both a flashback and flash forward in it. But here we are with an episode opener that’s a flashback and flashforward at the same time!!! Man, all these time jumps are confusing... We're watching you from the past talking like its the present, referencing the future and then you throw in a live 'episode' where you talk about episodes you havent even seen yet in our timeline. It could get convoluted 😂
Love your reactions Elie ! Lost is my fav tv show and its great to watch you through this journey. However I think you need to stop with the subtitles, because the mention of the character speaking will spoil you a major moment of the series.

Elie, with all respect. You really need to stop pausing in the middle of the scenes. 28:54 That scene plays very nice if you let it play, but you paused it at the worst time possible. You are ruining it for yourself.
Time travel is whatever you want it to be. There are no rules, since it's most likely impossible. My only issue with time travel is to do what the MCU did, create rules and then ignore/change them in different movies. Whatever the show/movie/book creator decides are the rules, for me it's fine, but they must be consistent.
In Quantum Physics, time moving back and forth on one street with no left or right turns, or new streets, is pretty much a rule. And LOST follows it well.
As much as I loved watching Lost when it first aired, many people began tuning off after all the time travelling. It was just too confusing and very different for audiences at the time.
Wow, I had no idea so many Losties liked season 5 the best. I must be in the minority - this is my least favorite season. Don't get me wrong though. I'm all about time travel, but I just wasn't as excited in this season. I like to call this season "The Sawyer Season." You'll see why later, but I will say, Josh Holloway really stepped up in a big way. And I truly applaud him for that. And with me being the biggest Jack fan, that says alot!
Time travel in lost sucks 🤷🏻♂️ half of it make no sense cause they couldn't establish proper rules. It's just silly. Only fanboys will claim otherwise, but the fact is lost is full of plot holes And btw it's still one of my favourite shows of all time, but it has soooo many deficits
it's actually refreshing seeing a rare opinion on here i'll admit. Season 5 is my favorite season of Lost so obviously I don't agree with you, but I can respect your opinion.
They established rules in the writers room and spent hours/days debating it. They thought about things like the French Woman, Ben, even that compass. LOST follows non-paradoxical time travel, ala Predestination, 12 Monkeys, "whatever happened, happened" "whats done is done" "I can't change my past, I can only take responsibility for it". Locke discusses his view on it coming up. They even had other characters talking about it having one of them standin for the audience, breaking the 4th wall. You must be a fan of bootstrap/grandfather paradox time travel, ala Back to the Future, where theres tons of contradictions and mistakes. Just because its harder to think through doesn't mean its bad.
It's actually the only form of time travel that does make sense. And Lost does it very well. I'd ask what didn't make sense to you... but don't want to risk any spoilers.
I know you can't say now because of spoilers but when we get to the episodes with plot holes I hope you mention them in the chat cos I'm interested to hear. My memory is that they stick to rules established and there are a few questionable things but nothing big.
Great reaction as always Elie! I can never catch live streams so here's a lil something from me. Good luck with your busy week!

It's boggles the mind. I started watching the show the summer before Season 2 aired. By the time of Walkabout I could tell that it was a sci-fi show in disguise. And I was hooked.
If you thought last season was wild, get ready
FINALLY MY FAVORITE SEASON
Whatever happened, happened. Daniel always arrived at that hatch door to meet Des.
The question is why didn't either of them remember it last season when they met/spoke?
My guess on Des is...Similarly to Daniel's over exposure to radiation. Memory loss? Similar to how he forgot who Sayid & Lapidus were, on the chopper.
My guess on Daniel is...this isn't Daniels' past memory. Travelling to the past, is actually Daniels present.🙃
Favorite season!!!
Here we go! 5:45 am in Portugal but here we are!
We know it's a good episode if Desmond is included 😂❤🎉. Dude I can't wait for more, this season will make us all go crazy and I mean CRAZY!!
Lost's use of time travel comes down to three words: Whatever happened, happened. You can't harm baby Hitler, or change history in anyway.
IT IS TIME 🤩🤩🤩 Get ready for a hell of a ride!!
Time to sit back, relax, and see how all the missing pieces start coming into place
I just saw that Lost is the second most viewed show on Netflix. We have to go back!
Dr Chang is one of my favorite characters in the whole show. "don't be ABSURD" as if everything he says isn't ABSURD 🤣🤣🤣
"Dark" has entered the chat
I theorize that Ethan shooting Locke in the leg is the reason how the Island temporarily disabled the use of his legs the day that Boone died! 😱
OHHHHHH
and yet he didn't remember having met Locke when he went to them after the crash?
I'm triple posting because I'm excited, I'm sorry! But the cat is out of the bag officially!! Time travel in Lost lets f'ing go!!!!!
Continue your good work! :) New ep tonight?
THANKKK YOU TIAGO!!! YESSIR!!!!
with time travel (in reality and tv/movies) the question is always 'If you went back in time, could you change anything?' - different movies interpret it in different ways - so all time travel movies have different ways of answering that question - lost is no different - so the time travel rules in lost may or may not be the same as other movies. but thats the fun with time travel :)
My definition of LOST: show a spiritual story about karma through the sci-fi story structure. "We are the causes of our own sufferings" - Room 23 video.
So now we know James cared about EVERYBODY from the crash that was on that boat - except maybe Michael.
Josh is such a great actor. That scene always gets me choked up. We saw how much he cared for Hurley and Jin. And his heart is broken for then.
The show tells you everything you need to know about its take on time travel. 👍
Happy Thanksgiving bro
Lost Time Travel? Best Time Travel.
Do the writers absolutely nail it? So much that it's main concepts and rules were used in other shows.
Hope it answers the question
S5 BEST Lost Season 👇
Remember... the Island losties are currently skipping around in time, but it is still their present.
Elie: "It's seems that we are transitioning in to the full sci-fi..." Did you think it was something more than survival on the Island after plane crush when you was watching s1?
@@juliet_burke always was since the first ep
Going back in time to try and change history only puts that history into motion.
As far as the public is concerned, Kate got pregnant before the crash from
a hookup or old boyfriend. They don’t know the relationship between her and Jack other than she “helped saved him” in the “crash”
Regarding the time travel thing. You have to ask yourself what would the consequences be if you went back and changed something.
For this particular episode. Let’s look one thing
If Locke somehow did manage to get up to that plane but caused the plane to fall - none of the events in 1x19 would have taken place.
At last!
"I'm gonna stop you right there, Scott. Are you seriously telling me that your plan to save the universe is based on "Back to the Future?"
(Tony Stark, 2019)
My favorite season! 4 8 15 16 23 42 let's go!
Lost It is the first TV show present time travel
Season five, here we go.
OMG LFG 🎉
Daniel talking to Desmond isn't changing anything. Whatever happened, happened and whatever will happen, will happen.
You can't change the future because the future is technically the past for someone else and thus you can't change their past
All of these years and I'm still thinking about the rules of time travel with this show.
@@John_Locke_108 Ah ok. I think I see what you mean now. I agree it is tricky to explain things without giving spoilers.
Finally! NOW LOST has started!
Like other comments, the time travel does get explained as we move forward in the season. The only show that I feel does time travel better than Lost is Netflix's Dark. Where the creators most definitely were inspired by Lost.
No spoilers
What if everything desmond has learned since the hatch explosion is the theme of Lost?
Namaste guy at the start of this ep. Did u recognise him in the Penguin series? He was Feng Zhao, leader of the Triads
🌴❤️🌴
I would just like to say the basic concept for this shows time travel was done first in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban. Now you could argue this show expanded on it and made it better. Though Harry Potter did it first. Unless someone knows of the same time travel concept that was used earlier.
You can make history but not change it. 8)
8:15 first of all good timing for coment))
5 season in and you distrust Ben? how dare you
Re the compass that points north, the only significance* in all reality is that you actually trod on/spoiled a joke, no more no less, with an unfortunately (perfectly) timed pause. 😅
*Yes I know Young John/Richard's Choice etc IS pertinent but watch it again and it's just & only Richard ripping the piss out of John for asking a dumb question 😂
Everything that has happened already happened. Maybe one of the reasons the Others were so interested in Locke is because Ethan remembered him disappearing in the jungle years b4 815 crashed
FUCKIN POST S5E2! Plzzz
The difference though between Endgame and Back to the Future is, Marty's "new street" overwrote the old, but MCU is a "multiverse," parellel timelines, or "branches."
Did that make sense or did I just make it more confusing lol.
We’ve had flashback episodes, we’ve had flash forward episodes, we’ve even had episodes with both a flashback and flash forward in it. But here we are with an episode opener that’s a flashback and flashforward at the same time!!!
Aaron is meant to be 3 but looks about 5 and is talking like a 1 year old
Love we got a thin excuse for sawyer to walk about with no shirt on
AND THATS WHY UR ALWAYS SUPPOSED TO LOAD THE DISHWASHER WITH KNIVES POINTING DOWN
Get that journal backed up to the cloud please
Man, all these time jumps are confusing... We're watching you from the past talking like its the present, referencing the future and then you throw in a live 'episode' where you talk about episodes you havent even seen yet in our timeline. It could get convoluted 😂
aw what? no bloopers? 😵
@SeenGod ill do season 3 and 4 in one vid been addicted to the eps hahaha
To see if Lost does Time travel "The right way" you would first need to explain to us what's "The right way" for you.
Love your reactions Elie ! Lost is my fav tv show and its great to watch you through this journey. However I think you need to stop with the subtitles, because the mention of the character speaking will spoil you a major moment of the series.
Pretty fun stuff. What a great character Faraday is, i love that actor too. Time travelling was always hinted in Lost. It still bothers me that Ethan apparition doesnt make any sense, so he already knew locke but didnt say anything? It seems like a difficult moment to forget since a guy just disappear in front of you. Its funny because they bring back an actor just for that small scene. Desmond case is similar, he should be able to remember Daniel when he meets him in 2004, BUT what i think is the desmond who meet faraday in the hatch in this is episode was present desmond with his consciousness travelling through time like in the constant, wait but he mentioned the replacement, and the mask, well pretty fun stuff.
Only fanboys will claim otherwise, but the fact is lost is full of plot holes
And btw it's still one of my favourite shows of all time, but it has soooo many deficits
it's actually refreshing seeing a rare opinion on here i'll admit.
@pewburrito 😂
Boring old person drones on: lotsa kids are blonde when they are little and their hair darkens over time. I was a pure white blonde until about 4yo. 🥱
Same here. It blew my wife's mind when she saw a picture of my 2 year old self with white hair. It's been black since age 4.
Same! Mom and I were both bright blonde as kids. Her hair is brown and mine is starting to turn more brown now too 👀
