    Not sure if this would work for you but I number all my half pans and then keep a log of what is in each numbered pan. I actually keep the log in a spreadsheet in Dropbox and add the colours I want next. That way, if I find myself in an art store, I get what I want and don't buy anything I already have.

      That’s something I should do. I have some cheep tubes atm but they are surprisingly fairly good but I wanna get more water colours and make a palette one day. I like the way you log everything you have it sounds like it would be helpful

      Genius!! What a great idea - I am going to do this today.

    • @wendynorman6965

      @@MsCooljoshi haha I just saw this. Sorry for the delay! When I buy a tube, I put some in an empty numbered pan and paint it onto a little postage stamp sized piece of watercolour paper. I cut batches of them from a sheet of paper. I write the pan number on the back of the paper sample. Then I enter into a spreadsheet, the date, pigment info, pan number, colour name, brand name, etc. I store the spreadsheet in the cloud so that when I’m shopping, I can see what I already have. I can sort the spreadsheet by brand, pan number, date or whatever I want.
      When I put a palette together for something specific, I dump all my little painted samples out of their ziplock bag, arrange them roughly into a colour wheel and choose the ones I want to use. Then I grab those pans from out of their “home” palette and pop them into a temporary one.

    Hi Jess! New to the channel so I apologize if someone else has already addressed this, but just an FYI on inserting the pans. If you start on the other shorter, fixed side of the metal holder and then click it down into the long flexible piece of metal, the pans will be much more secure and not move around as much :) Happy painting!

    Not sure if anyone else has said this yet, if you pinch the little metal flap down just a little before you put the pan in, it helps keep the pans from jiggling around so much. Lindsey (the frugal crafter) talked about it in one of her videos and it has saved a lot of my pans from falling out of place! :)

    What I find that works for me is to label the swatches. Because I’m kinda messy with paints, I also laminated my swatches. Also, to make your swatches look prettier and more convenient, make a grid that mimics the size and shape of the pans and do a gradient with one little stripe of the paint layered so you can see how it lays down better.

    I realize I'm a bit late to the party, but thought I'd chime in anyway. Those empty, metal palettes are designed to fit full pans, as well. Sure you'll have fewer pans, but the 1/2 pans are murder on your brushes. I use a mix of both full and 1/2 pans. in my metal palette according to which colors I use most often. Thanks, you vid was most helpful.

  • @firecloud6503
    @firecloud6503 7 лет назад +71

    As I was setting up my palette I first made this colour chart and put the colour names and brands on there, because I don`t want to write on my pans in case the colour gets empty and I`m going to replace it with another one.
    But that`s just my way. I`ve seen a lot writing on the pans.
    Your colours look really nice. As I was watching you I had the feeling you really like the colour red.

    • @studioxjess
      @studioxjess  7 лет назад +5

      firecloud yes, I wrote on the pans because I have extras and also because I take them out a lot for photography and they get re-ordered.
      Ps. Maybe it seems like I like red bc of my nails ☺️

      you can write it on masking tape so if you want to change the color then you can peel off the tape and write the new color name on it. Happy Painting!

    I write down the color names on a card chocolate box style next to swatches corresponding to their position in the palette, then laminate or, well, in my case, wrap the card in clear packing tape. I can never read my own sharpie writing - plus any excuse to swatch is a good one in my book. Admittedly, it means I have to make a new card every time I adjust my palette.

    Oh my gosh, you MUST label the pans before you fill them!!!! I recently had a DISASTER while setting up a new palette with some paints I'd never used before.... The container I had them resting in while drying got knocked over and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM landed on the ground, face-down.... Despite having magnets on them and being in a metal box. =;_;= I was so distraught. Thank goodness they were all labelled!
    Happy to see I'm not the only one who's absolutely completely stingy with watercolors and digs out every last drop from a dried tube. =>.

    Hi I'm a newbie... but I was wondering if the water color paint stays wet or if it dries out in the palette. If it dries out... how do you use it? Do you add water and it goes back to normal???

    • @studioxjess
      @studioxjess  8 лет назад +64

      Jade Clanton hey there, welcome! Yes that is exactly how watercolors work. They're "activated" by water, so they dry in the half pans and then you wet your brush and they become paintable again 👍 if you have any other q's about them don't hesitate to ask!

    • @CinnamonCari
      @CinnamonCari 7 лет назад +9

      Baby Girlie You could mix them with a TINY amount of glycerine or honey to make them more wet and easier to reactivate. There are several vídeos here on youtube on the subject.

      I heard that watercolor that comes in a tube loose some of its qualities if you let it dry out. Is it that true? And if it is, why some people just squeeze them like that? I whatched a lot of videos that sayed that is "dangerous" to the paint and others that didn't say these sort of things. As you can see, i'm VERY confused. It seems, according to Weedus, that it depends from paint to paint. Is it that correct?

    When you put your watercolours in the little half box do you let them dry (maybe freeze them) and then put them into the palette box?
    Because I really want to do this myself.

    Hi! While you were filming this, how did you get all the different angles? One angle is above, facing you, etc? Did you have multiple cameras or did you move them?

    So is arranging colors dark to light a typical way to organize? Are there other methods?

      Julia H.B this has truly been a game changer ~ it really is a hustle! I had a ceramic plate I was using but it would get muddy/dusty so fast. 😘

      Studio Jess I know! I waste so much paint because of it, so I actually bought a set of half pans and a tin a few minutes after writing that coment! I am looking forward to getting them in the mail :D keep doing your amazing job!

    I had no idea I could set it up like this, I always just applied my tubes directly to a paint pan.
