- Few things are more distinctive, or traditional, across the Navy than the sound of a Boatswain's pipe played over a ship's 1MC. In this edition of 101, we take you to the bridge and introduce you to the Boatswain's Mate of the Watch. She'll explain the history and necessity behind her job.
Bro, she is the best BM2 I have ever worked with! Not to mention she just finished saying that her pipe was not properly tuned and she was only a UI back then so relax!!
At least she's got the humility to admit she's still got work to do.
Think she's made chief yet?
She gets to ring a bell every hour and use a boatswain's call? Jealous! I love her, she looks like she enjoys every minute of her job!
Every half-hour.
We hate being BMs
Great job 👍👍👍!
My dad was a Boatswain (1946-1969 United States Merchant Marines).
Served as a S1C US Navy during WW2.
Been retired 24 yrs, but this series brings back a lot of memories
I am ex Navy USS Independence CV-62. You made an INCREDIBLE video! Thank you for helping countless seamen in the future to understand the US Navy! Anchors Away!
aweigh
Yup, that was my bad.
Foreclosurepedia
How long were you on the Indy? My father was on the last marine detachment to serve on her.
I was a BM on the uss tarawa, and uss mount Vernon, both ship were amphibs. This was the best time of my life, remember these days, have pride, God bless ya and thank you for your service and also keeping the oldest rate in the us navy alive.
I think this was one of the most informative videos of the Carl Vinson series thank you all for your service.
As a former active Duty BM, you either Love it, or hate it.
what rank did you get up to?
@@gabeschiazza7605 why?🤔😒
Certainly explains the sentence structure XD
Are you saying that because some people don’t know how to do it properly
Good job!!! I bet those with negative comments never even seen a ship. I'm a veteran and you brought me back to the ship lol.
I was a boatswain on the Independence from 70-73. Stood many watches on the bridge.
Excellent job BM3 Anderson . I hope you're doing well in 2018 thank you for serving in our Navy
I’m looking into doing this. Leaving the National guard for this. Looks fun
I know a guy who did that. He loves the Navy and is doing well. He’s a 1st Class.
Do it man!
Considering her rank, BM3 Anderson has accomplished quite a lot. I see she is qualified in EAWS and ESWS, programs I am quite familiar with. Both take work and determination. She seemed a little nervous in the video but watch her over time. Great job and enjoyed the tour again! V/R AZC(AW/NAC) Kimberly King - US Navy - Retired
Well said, Chief!
Try being an Electronic Technician, or a Nuclear Technician, Corpsman, or even a Radioman.
@@josephwonderless1258 you guy never get your boots dirty. You guys are glorified deck hands.
The job of a BMSN is yeah sure at first painting and sanding. But we are a sea rate so our job is not really exciting until you go out to sea. The helm and lee helm thats your job. I am on a carrier, actually this very same carrier and the now BM2 Anderson. And we rotate in watch. Helm, Lee helm, Forward lookout, Aft lookout, port/stbd life bouy, and port/stbd aft steering. If your just starting out at your first command you are going to have a lot of studying to do. Getting your quals!
Do they still have mail bouy watch at sea by the bms
Excellent job Boatswain Anderson.
I retired with 21 years in the Navy as a BMC. I always felt that the Bos'n pipe need not be used for every announcement over the 1MC. The primary reason for using the Bos'n pipe is to "get the attention" of the crew for something important about to happen. The overuse just to announce sweepers was one example of overuse. Over time the crew will just tune out the announcements because each becomes just noise. When a pipe call is sounded, one wants all to listen to what is going to be announced.
That's the oldest profession in the Navy. They have first dibs on Navy Seal if you nutz enough. Great job, I like the way you showed off your bells and whistle. Class dismissed:)
It a pipe not a whistle
It’s not the oldest rate QM is the oldest rate shipmate. The navigation team.
@@sparklejan3Wrong. Boatswains mate is the oldest rate in the Navy established in 1794. QM were created 4 years later in '98.
Hooyah Boats!! Great video and love to see the new Navy haze gray and underway... BM1/DV Hughes 79 -87!
as long as she is clear and understood, is all that matters....and yes love these vids you are putting out....students always asking question about Navy life on ships etc etc .
Tell them it is fun and they will enjoy every moment of it. Then don't tell them where you live either. LOL
Excellent work shipmate!
Nice BM3, on the Connie we had a BM that was like Fog Horn-Leg Horn from the cartoons. LOL it was fun. Thanks for the post CVN-70. God bless the crew.
Wow! Thanks for your Service! I hope all snap to attention when your whistle blows!
You take your position so seriously and practice your annoying whistle diligently!
Found a New Hero today! 🙌
I was a qualified BMOW the day I put on my crow at 18. I never needed any script. I knew them all. Even General Quarters and Oscar. Qualified master helmsman. My longest time at the helm was 9 hours hooked up to the USS Nimitz. The 1MC hasn’t changed one bit. Good times!
that was very interesting. iam glad that some traditions are still in use.
Fascinating and great job of demonstrating the Call/Pipe in contemporary service on board a working vessel. Maybe you might advise me, in reading various manuals on the Pipe, some seem to say close fingers for a high note; but some videos seem to show fingers open for the high note - the latter work better for me, but not sure if I am getting misunderstanding something.
As a hull Tech i use to tune the pipe for the guts I liked in Deck . I would braze the pipe tighter and part of the top of the bowl. I was giving a pipe from Deck and the rest of the crew was AMAZED that the BMOTW had so much lung power.
I still had to learn the knots. figure 8. mast head , square knots and clove hitch to win them over...I was a HT!!! the whole ship was tight except the officers.
The only knot I knew was the square knot that I learned in boot camp. Expect that I was a RM3 while on board the Enterprise. Plus the GQ gong sounded SICK, and the BM use to sing This is a drill, this is a drill, General Quarters, General Quarters , all hands man your battle station. Then we heard the Gong, Gong,Gong,Gong, then it repeated.
She is awesome! Carry on!
excellent video!
Awesome video thank you for sharing!
I was a BM in the Coast guard aboard the Campbell and the chase 73 to 77
For the most part yes we do paint a lot when we are inport but all commands are different. On a carrier there is not a lot of work for us to do as boatswains mate. Small boys are the best you do more of your job. I have a lot of buddies on a small boy and they love it.
I am so glad you pointed that out because being on a tin can is way better for a Boston's Mate¡!!!!!! 😎👍⚓
She did a great job.
That bell looked way better back then than it does now. My deck department sucks.
Well I'm about to join the navy, just waiting to go to MEPS. This is one of the rates I'm thinking about getting. Still can't decide between bosun, i.t. or ao. I'm leaning towards bosun
"Hangar" is misspelled on the 1MC selector switch.
She seems super cool
Outstanding job boats
Good job Boats!
They hand out SW/AW now like candy.
Now its like getting DC qualified so easy...
@USS Carl Vinson can you show what general quarters on an aircraft carrier is like?
Good Job Boats!
I was asked the password from an officer my first time to the bridge UW, it was K=GINKO BLATTEN sounds funny i still remember it from 01.
i used to imitate this to drive my older sis crazy. cant do it any more .:(
CUDOS I see you have both pins,i earned mine on the USS KITTY HAWK in 01
CHARLES SMITH my dad was on the KITTY HAWK
Charles was the Kitty Hawk I think cva63 better know to Radioman on Guam as the kitty shitty.
Good job Boats.
Love it!
The boatswain's pipe is properly called a boatswain's "call." OR pipe; never a whistle, as she explains. Go, Navy!
You don't have to say "BREAKER 1-9" before using the 1mc?
You have to serve 5 years active duty but including an extra 3(inactive years so no affiliation with the navy) for when you get out.
I love my job!!!
What's the outro song?
First why does the boatswain's whistle have to be tuned, shouldn't this be done at the factory? And all boatswain's mate jobs is a lot harder then that as we all know.
They are not tuned from the factory because of safety. Like she said the wind edge has to split a s broom straw. Plus it’s tradition
She has an AW and SW pin yet is only a 3rd class? Does BM rate advance really slow or what?
E 5 and below have to be covered why is that ? But any rank does not have to seems the visor on your cover could block your view
I feel like so much is said in so little time
WHERE IS THE LANYARD FOR THE PIPE
how long do you have to serve on active duty till they let you go?
What does it say on the enlistment contract that they signed with the Navy? Mine was Four years active duty, and Two years Reservist.
You don't need to yell into them!!
Honestly I hate when people would do that especially when I am trying to sleep on my off time.
Bravo Zulu !
BM3 USS Frank Cable 89-93
Uss Holland AS 32 89-93 wep sta Charleston
I'm miss my crewmates and the overall daily life of underway.
4 years active on uss carney, now im in the reserves
DDG-14 1968-1971
Good job, and yes please tune that pipe please :)
BM1(SW) Ruiz (Retired)
USNR
Soulds like the Captain Crunch whistle. It might be useful for phone phrraking. Cappy Dick does not know about this.
Actually I thought her call sounded perfect!!!!! 😎👍💯
The USS Vinson is Nimitz Class NUCLEAR powered ship. I take issue with a BM saying their work area is the most professional place on the ship. Obviously has no clue what the Nuke down below are doing. That is where the true professionalism is on a carrier, in the Reactor/Engineering spaces, and also on the flight deck. A lack of professionalism in either space could have severe to grave consequences.
young lady it is a boatwains call it is never never called a pipe. it is a call. how do I know this I sailed in the navy for 20 years as a boatswains mate and 18 years in the Merchant marines as a able seaman and Bosn.
Richard Hilbert 18 years ab and not captains license? i bacame a master as soon as i could
Well, when I was in the USCG it was called a pipe.
The device is a pipe, the call is the announcement. BMC, Ret.
What happend?
Silencio, relevó dé guardia
I don't remember having to use the pipe for every announcement but then again I was on a Destroyer (small boy)
Should be the same bud
I would love to wake up a bunch of people who outrank me… “All hands HEAVE out!”
i have two pipes one from England and a USN one. the one from ENGLAND much better i got it when i was in yokosuka japan
I'd have to agree with kristov29. This young lady (BM3) speaks too fast and unclear. I spent many a night aboard the Chucky V during the 80's and if the Bosun spoke like her back then. G.D. O'Brien and the Gator would have bounced them off the bridge themselves.
lolol.
i want to hear the pipe! did I miss her blow the pipe?
At least once during the video. So, yes, you missed it.
Arggg....pirates will get yer ship!!!!
hearing that BM pipe still makes me cringe.
Damn im glad i was a bee! getting shot at sounds better then all the bs! Hoorah!
First off its a boatswain call you pipe with a call and they act as if the us navy started all these traditions just like witht the marines you stole the idea from the british xD boatswains mate is alot older than the us navy so saying its been a position since the us navy started isnt accurate
They're talking about the Navy specifically. She meant that Boatswain has been a rate IN the Navy since it started. Shes not saying that the rate originated from the Navy.
It was easy but it bored me to death. Nothing educational just physical work.
a lot
I'm sorry, but she has a terrible speaking voice and it must sound even worse when amplified on a public address system.
Shes not there for her voice.
Try having to try to listen/hear to this mush over the 1mc when it aint tunned soove wit the broomsrick... wtf just hammond wit muh brain?
Downsize ffs but don't do that.
I was LCPO of Deck on the Carl Vinson for 4 years a BM3 will never be a BMOW when I left BM1 was BMOW and BMC and above was BM chief of the watch I was a SN on the USS Wichita (AOR-1)
and was a BMOW now BM3 are just better paid SN I made BMC(SW) in 10 years and BMCS(SW) in 15
Then this might of been just to show, and not the real thing Chief.
If your Bm1 is standing watch then you division is fucked. Bm1 needs more collateral duties if he has time for watch. Unless Boats is getting OOD underway Qualified. LPO is not enough to make BMC.
Carl Vinson? A ship named after a staunch segregationist?
Ugh
They must have changed the way you call on the pipe......those sound like crap. I don't even want to hear a "trill".
PLEASE WORK ON YOUR PIPING.
that's the sorriest piping I've ever heard..... no pride!!! stand up and pipe with dignity
haha she did seem nervous.
they should had done a retake :P
Rodney fields Dude, settledown she is also a twin pin holder, that is an accomplishment in itself 😡🇺🇸👍
Pathetic. Females on the bridge....
Pipe not tuned. Poor demeanor
a bit sexist aren't you
a bit racist aren't you
Harry Kuheim needs to take his Russian ass over *thur*. -t. son of the revolutionary war
Pathetic antiquated mentality. Females are everywhere in the Navy. She was probably a little nervous being filmed, but did a great job. GO NAVY GIRLS
