You know what's something else I have noticed? And i didn't notice until you guys brought it up about Sully always bailing Mike out. Mike never takes advantage of Sully for it. He thanks Sully for the reservations and he doesn't think to go to Sully for his paperwork, Sully genuinely butts in to help and Mike doesn't abuse that. He's genuinely grateful for his friend and I think that's a testament to eachother's friendship.
I think it's also valuable to note that Mike does do things for Sully. He helps him with his morning routine and motivates him to do his best. He also backs up his friend with a creature that he thinks is highly dangerous because he cares about his friend
It's definitely why their friendship endures the hardship. Mike acts really hard-headed for most of the movie, but he *does* appreciate and care about Sully and is able to come around eventually and do more than just cover for him.

Mary Gibbs, daughter of late storyboard artist Rob Gibbs, voiced Boo when she was only three years old. Because she was too young to sit in a recording booth, they simply followed her around the studio with a microphone, and recorded the things she said, adding to the authencity. She has a RUclips channel, Boo Grown Up, where she recounts growing up as the voice of Boo.
One of Boo's drawings says "Mary" as well. Not sure if it's a real drawing of Mary's but I wouldn't be surprised. I also love the implication that it means Boo shares a name with Mary
I will say, it's not that Mike doesn't know HOW to file paperwork - it's that he doesn't remember to do it in that ADHD way. It's clear he knows, given his recitation to Sully, *exactly* where everything goes and exactly what to do. It's the doing where the train derails. Which is *very* ADHD in my lived experience.
It is probably also the not-exclusively-ADHD-but-definitely-neurodivergent thing where we find ourselves separating the things that make us happy and fulfilled, from the things that don't, and those in the "don't" category get forgotten because our brain has written them off as not enjoyable, not dopamine-sparking. In Monsters University, Mike is shown to know very well how to do school work and take care of tasks and sort information, but in that context at that time, it made him happy to do it. If I were to overthink it, it would all come together as evidence of Monsters Inc Mike not feeling inspired or satisfied by that aspect of his job anymore, and his ADHD brain responding by throwing it out. Him being so excited to jump into the comedy role and give that admin side up concludes that perfectly, and his role in Monsters At Work validates it.
My dad passed away when I was seven years old and this was his favorite movie. Every year I would watch this movie on his birthday. Today is his birthday. It’s also my last day at college and I graduate this weekend, following in his steps of being a teacher. It means the world to me that this is the video that y’all released today. Feels like a sign that my dad is proud of me for everything I accomplished.

He did see the fear, but he’s never let it sit with him before. He’s never been there for the aftermath, what happens AFTER he scares them. He was utterly detached from his actions until now, he probably thought these “dangerous” kids just go on to live their lives normally after he scares them. So it’s the first time he’s seeing the consequences of what he’s doing (and seeing himself doing it).
I love how understated Mike's care is for Sully. He says "I care about you" from his actions while Sully says it with gestures and words. It's a great lesson for kids that people demonstrate love in unique ways.

One of the most underappreciated facts about this movie is the dynamic between Mike and Sully, in a genre of buddy movies saturated with the conflict of an unlikely duo becoming friends by the end, it’s great to see a movie start off with two established best friends, which not only allows the story to have better pacing, but also makes the moments where Mike & Sully conflict much more believable and emotional
The part where Sully scares Boo breaks my heart every time. That poor wee girl. Always makes me cry. I did this to my daughter a few months ago. We had a newborn baby, and we were exhausted. My little girl just wanted my attention and I snapped at her. All she wanted was to show me a picture she drew of her and me, and I hurt her.
Don't feel bad Mama Bear. You got alot on your plate and we all do it accidentally at some point. I hope your little girl knows her mummy loves her loads.
Aww, that's so sweet, my cousin was born the same time this movie came out, and she's almost 23 now. We older kids were sent to see this movie to keep us occupied when she was being born.

Actually, that's a good point that I've never realized before. It's so common for boys to be taught that you shouldn't cry, and then we see Sully - a big, powerful monster - cry at the end of this film. He feels grief, and he's allowed to feel grief, and no one tells him it isn't okay. In fact, something like that would feel completely alien in a film like this.
A Monsters University episode has so much potential: talks about failure, unrealistic expectations, coming to term with one's own limitations, finding sideways and alternative goals that don't end up in betraying yourself... This movie is really underrated

I just noticed at 9:46 Mike is saying "Come on somebody else is going to find the kid. It will be their problem not ours" right infront of Roz and she is watching them, turning her head slowly 😱 The foreshadowing.
Whats lovely about the end of this film with the additional context of the prequel film made many years later is the knowledge that Mike initially dreamed of being a professional scarer but didn't succeed in it because he wasn't scary enough. But now Mike is perfectly suited to be a clown/comedian and doing the same job of collecting energy and laughs are even more potent. He had given up his dream and resolved himself to just being an assistant/coach and now he's a star!
This film was a fantastic allegory for students with learning disabilities, mental disorders such as: ADHD, Anxiety, Autism etc as well as physical disabilities. It's also a good allegory for so many highly competitive jobs such as being an actor or musician. Even if you have the grades and the training and work your butt off there's no guarantee that you can make it big because there's elements beyond your control. For example, Mike doesn't have "the look" which ultimately doesn't make him appealing (scary). Ugly actors/actresses and singers/musicians struggle significantly more than attractive people even if the attractive people are less talented. But overall the story is: Sometimes you can do absolutely everything right and put your heart and soul into working hard but still not succeed. Maybe you are not actually suited to it, maybe you just don't have the talent. Believing in yourself sometimes isn't enough.

I do this all the time to get negative thoughts out and I always worry that I'm doing something wrong, or strange, or going crazy. I’m no therapist, but the same thing tends to happen to me too. I’ve come to understand (so far) that the perpetual hypothetical argument sometimes comes from a lack of confidence in my relationship with the person. I can’t imagine that they care about me, so I imagine that they won’t listen, or that they’ll invalidate me, or anything else in that vein. In those moments, I try to challenge myself by asking what I’m trying to achieve by characterizing that person in this way. It’s not fair to them or to myself for me to make them that person in my mind. Sometimes though, I just let a hyper-dramatic moment play out! I get it all out of my system and then ask myself, “Ok, now what would happen realistically?” Like anything else on earth, it takes practice. Just try to be patient with yourself. 💚
Scully scaring Boo will never not hurt and break my heart.😭 I just love the trope of someone seeing another person they know and care about as a monster, basically appearing unrecognizable to them whether in a literal or metaphorical sense.🥺 Also, this movie has one of my favorite lines ever in a Pixar movie with: “Mama! Another gator got in the house!” “Another gator! Give me that shovel!”😂😂😂
I love that they clearly have experience with gators in the house, but they see Randall, who doesn't look anything like a gator, and Trailer Mama doesn't even hesitate with that shovel. Poor Randall 😅
My dad was a man who wanted to be loving, but he loved selfishly. So when he'd rage at me and my sister, which happened at the littlest inconvenience and assumption, instead of softening when he saw our tears and terror, he took that shame spiral and grew angrier at us for crying. Bizarrely, there were other times when he was deeply compassionate. But we never knew who we were going to get. And thus, the trauma bond. My point though: thank you to those who do soften when you've made a mistake with how your temper breaks. I can only imagine how healing that accountability can be.
Wow me and my sister had a similar relationship with my mom. She never backed down when we were crying helplessly in fact she'd get more furious and her insults would get more brutal when we apologized over and over again. So I didn't even KNOW that scene was supposed to represent a parent losing their temper with their child and feeling guilty since I used to count the days I didn't cry. Thank you for sharing your experience, it weirdly feels ... better to see Im not the only one. Although ı am deeply sorry for what happened, my best wishes to you and your sister. @bilgeakaln6335 I'm so sorry you and your sister dealt with such mercilessly poor mothering. You did nothing to deserve that kind of cruelty. Be kind to yourself. My sister and I have thankfully healed through the years with faith and therapy, but the scars will always be there, for all of us. I do know that I'm kinder today because I never want to hurt someone like that. While it doesn't make my dad's behavior okay, it has taught me that our choices matter, and it also means that beauty came from ashes. Even the destruction of a wildfire doesn't last forever. After the devastation, the soil is richer and more what's planted there will flourish. What that is we plant is where our power lies. 🫂
I am in the exact same position. My dad is a very loving but very angry man, and he is only willing to love in his own way. He’s gone through a lot of trauma himself but all he’s done is paid that sadness forward. I’ve been Boo many times in my life, only difference is that, unlike Sully, he never softened. He’s “better” now in the sense that he’s a bit calmer, but he will still yell and say the cruelest things in his anger which is brought on by the smallest of inconveniences. He rarely apologises - I can remember once where he apologised without saying “I’m sorry you are so sensitive” or “I’m sorry you feel that way”, and that was when I was like, 9. He never takes accountability since he repeats the same mistakes over and over. He always says “when I’m angry I say things I don’t mean, so just ignore me” but it’s hard to ignore a man who, when he yells, can be heard by people on the street through closed windows. Some of what he has said to me has stayed and has made me feel that I am too stupid to do anything or live alone, or that my opinions don’t matter and are dumb so I should just shut up. It’s affected my ability to form friends since I often overthink situations and worry they see me as annoying, too chatty, and stupid. I know it will take a lot of work to get his voice out of my head, but thank you for sharing your story and advice

And it shouldn’t be upto you, a kid nonetheless to take the responsibility of dealing with an adult’s actions. Im sorry for our shitty parents’ behavior. I promise it’ll get better, not because you learn to “ignore it” or just “deal with it” but because you put your mental health and well being before their selfishness.
@Annie-b2i I'm so sorry. 🫂 It's uncanny how similar the behavior you've described is to how my dad was (he passed when I turned 19). I know what you mean: even knowing his words were not the truth, they still stab. When inundated, it's like a steady drip of poison in your ear. The accumulation weakens even the strongest over time. And the lack of true - particularly, of true and *lasting* - accountability adds insult to injury. May we all be brave and accountable enough to draw a line in the sand and say, "It ran in my family, UNTIL it ran into me."
I'd say Mike is more than an assistant, he's also like a sports coach or manager. We see this expanded upon in Monsters Uni but you see it right at the start of Inc as well - he keeps Sully fit, puts him through scare exercises, comes up with the tactics. Sully even calls him "coach" at the end of Uni. I know "scare assistant" is the proper job title for Mike and the others but I feel it doesn't quite do justice to the role they play!
There's a blooper reel where they show the company play stuff, including most of the "Put That Kid Back Where It Came From or So Help Me" and "She's Out of Our Hair" songs.
With the CDA playing most of the parts, clearly in an effort to cover up the whole incident by lending credibility to Mike and Sully's hastily thought up cover story.
I had the DVD with all the extras, I watched those shorts SO many times, as well as the blooper reels. Why don't they do blooper reels for their movies anymore?
To think they weren't even real "bloopers", the animators had to spend extra time and resources to produce them. They weren't like a whoopsie they caught while filming. It's just a wild amount of commitment.
My favorite bloopers are the ones in Toy Story 2. That had some good ones. 😆 However I haven’t seen Monsters Inc in a long time so I don’t remember much about it.
12:55 the new Disney+ series, Monsters at Work, Sully explains that the main reason he wanted to go with laugh power, was because when he saw that he scared Boo, it didn’t just scare her, it really hurt her, and if it hurt her, it probably hurt all the other children who they were scaring as well. So therefore, he didn’t want to hurt the children anymore, so that’s why they went with laughs instead of screams.
One thing I do like about the movie is that scaring human children is the normal and not considered immoral in that world (and the fact it runs their technology). Silly doenst even see it wrong till he sees how it affects Boo. And that change does have a positive effect where by the end of the movie the entire Economy changes where making children laugh is better for them and the mature world (as laughter is 10X more Effective anyways)
I recently wrote my final university paper on Monsters University being viewed from the perspective of disability, and it really made me view their 'break-up' scene in the cave differently. It was always Mike's dream to be a scarer, and the only reason he couldn't is because he was born into a body that just isn't scary. I think, despite their undeniably strong friendship, Mike always held a pinch of resentment towards Sulley getting to live out his dream and be everything he wanted to be, and hearing Sulley say "None of that matters now" brought all of that resentment boiling up. I adore both of these films so much, and I'm so glad you're covering this one! Maybe that means MU is coming up at some point too?
I wasnt a parent, but I am a much older brother, like 10 years older than the oldest of the second set to three. And that sully moment hits hard now. Ive been there.

My big sister still expresses grief for her past behavior toward me when she was a teen, she's 31 and I'm 25 now. My big brother is 29, They were both rather cruel, and I was "the baby" of the family. I got a lot of tough love and bad days to recount with those two. However. I learned to forgive, and understand, because while yes they're my big siblings, they were only 7, 10, 15, 17 etc. like they were only kids when I was a kid too. It was their first time also, and holding that against them would keep them from being better people now. They're both my best friends now, and things are good. I see my big sister often, and my big brother and I talk as often as we remember too lol
@@tommytoon_stories oh I mean for me it was kinda like in the film tho, it hurt being outside her door after I snapped and screamed, hearing her cry inside locking me out while I was apologizing, but the next day it was back to normal, I'm generally a very calm person but that's only cause I kinda just... don't express any emotions until it all builds up and I explode, tho rarely at other people, it's bad when it's at other people. Usually just screaming into my pillow, I think there are people I've had people call me a robot, like I'm high-school.
wow you guys must be wonderful, my mom usually loved to scare her daughters until they were a crying whimpering mess that would beg her to stop. And she never did. So. But hey at least my relationship with my big sis is great and I'll always love her. Don't worry the lil siblings won't hold grudge, just hug them afterwards and give some chocolate

from what I understand, the scene when Sully starts singing base with Mike's lead, was actually improvised by John Goodman. Billy Crystal and John Goodman recorded that session together and that's what they went with.
The thing I love most about this movie is that Sully and Mike are already long-time best friends when the story starts instead of recycling the formula of putting two characters together who initially can’t stand each other (that was saved for Monsters University lol)
PIXAR just nails at their story telling. The first time I watched this film, it was on TV. I was 6, and my sister(then 10) and I had a small fight. We didn't talk through this entire film because we were mad at each other. We were just silent and didn't even let out our laughs because we needed to show how affected we were from the fight we had...until the climax. When Boo opens the door to scare Sully, I experienced a sort of sadness like never before... it was new to me. My sister left to another room only for me to find that she was crying, and I started crying and both of us were hugging and crying. Been a fan since then.

My understanding is that they got what they could from the actress in the booth and then just let wander around playing and had someone following her and recording. So they combined actual child play sounds and the dialogue in the edit to get the performance.
The best part of growing up watching these Pixar movies was the DVD bonus content. Behind the scenes, bloopers and even games, each one was packed with hours of extra content. You can tell a lot of the people working there love it and want to go above and beyond in delivering their movies.
I have a recording of the movie, bloopers and musical with British audio description, which always brightens my day. I have to check out Monsters Uni now!
When you guys mentioned that Mike is ADHD coded I was floored. I grew up watching this movie on DVD over and over, and I got diagnosed with ADHD almost 2 years ago. But it all makes perfect sense! No wonder I always liked Mike growing up haha

+1 for both Gwen Stacy and Joel. I was never big into super heroes but the spiderverse movie are so good, I was instantly captivated. Gwen is such a cool character, I hope they end up making more stuff with her. Crossing my fingers for a ghost spider game since we have already had spiderman and miles games!
I just realized that finding out that laughter being 10x more powerful than screams must have been a dream come true and an emotional moment for Mike. The context that Monsters University gives us of Mike's desire to be a scarer and being told over and over that he's not scary and watching him accept that makes the scene where he finally does get to shine on the "scare" floor really special.
I think its interesting to see this movie again after the Prequal came out. I don't remember much, but I remember that Mike was so upset that he wasn't a scary monster that couldn't be taken seriously but had a heavy passion for scaring. And on the other hand, Sully is a jock-like character, whose known for being great for what he does and has so much potential. Their dreams were aligned, but Mike's was so much stronger. So seeing Sully be so quick and willing to throw it all away, when they were so close to their dream, is a lot less painful for Sully to let go of than Mike. As a kid I used to always dislike how Mike handled their problems, but as I get older I start to understand the frustration attached to it. Mike is sadly super reliant on Sully, and Sully is only reliant on Mike in regards to scaring, so if he throws that away, Mike has much less than Sully. The only thing that he really had for himself was his love, which was also stripped away from him when he was banished. Its understandable why he's so scared and frustrated because even if he complained every step of the way, he still supported Sully til the very end.
This movie has definitely decreased in notoriety as Pixar's repertoire has expanded through the years, but I will always maintain it has one of the most beautiful endings, ever. That last ultimate-best-friend gesture from Mike for Sully with repairing Boo's door gets you ready for the sweetness, and then the decision to hold on Sully's face as it morphs from uncertainty to joy while Boo says "Kitty" is just so quietly moving. I love it so much. And then this was the era of the Pixar bloopers, so I will never un-hear "Go throw up" from Mike when he gets the line, "Go grow up." Man, I loved those bloopers. They were the best. Not to mention they went a step further in this film by giving us snippets of Mike's musical. My husband and I will still occasionally sing, "She's out of our hair . . . and just when I dared . . . to care," etc.
That scene with the simulator, to me, not only did Sully realize that he broke Boo’s trust in that moment, but he also realized that his career had been traumatizing young children.
I hope you two guys realise that your friendship is one of the things that make this channel so beautiful. Your love for each other shines through. You are friends, not just buddies and it gives your videos so much warmth and happiness, even if they are sad. Never stop being you, and never stop loving your best friends!
I've always watched it in Latin America Spanish and I love the voice actress of Boo. They had the VA of Homer Simpson for Roz, and his daughter was Boo. She's so good.

This movie is so great. It's one of those movies that's about 99% memes, but when you watch it again, you're reminded just what a masterpiece it is. I'm German and the last time I saw this movie, I didn't understand enough English to understand all of it, much less the puns and stuff. I'm gonna have to watch it again just because I can understand these things now!
I’ve worked with a lot of neurodivergent kids. I usually work with them for 4-6 months and we form a bond, and I get sad when it’s time to say goodbye, but it was never something that overly affected me emotionally. Early in my career, when I was about 19, I started working with this kid who brought me so much joy. I couldn’t explain it. He just made me so happy and I just wanted to protect him from everything. I ended up working with him for almost a year before he left the clinic. I can’t get through scene where Sully says goodbye to Boo without gut wrenching sobbing because I’m immediately taken back to that day where I had to part ways with that sweet kid
Honestly I love that deep dive into what is a buddy VS a Friend! I used to think both words meant the same thing but it’s way more than meets the eye. Friendship definitely evolve when people change, one can want to grow while the other wants to stay the same. That’s when you realize that buddy relationship isn’t going to work out anymore. No one is the bad guy here, we just want different things. I wish I noticed this lesson sooner since I used to watch this movie all the time as a kid but I guess that’s the beauty of growing up and seeing things from a whole different perspective.
God i remember watching this as an adult again and wondering why Boo being scared made me so sad. As i grew up, the instinct to take care of smaller things grew stronger. But also the awareness that adults hold a certain presence over kids

Being a freshman in college gives me such a new perspective on the final scene where Sully leaves Boo. Sully represents my parents, my siblings, my friends, everyone that I had in my life, my whole childhood. The way that even if Boo wasn't that big of a deal for Mike and yet he finally acknowledge that for Sully is and, even at his prime, mike finds time to research, find and rebuild Boo's door for his best pal is just friendship goals
Now you guys HAVE to do Monsters University, that movie has such a strong message that really hits me personally, the whole concept of coming to terms with your apparent dream career not being the thing for you despite all your passion and hard work, and how you can still achieve it in a different way (Mike wanting to be a scarer but not being able to be scary so at the end he understands that he can act more as a coach and nurture talent to their fullest potential) And also the dynamics of social expectations and the struggles of following your dreams... Please cover it!
i’ve known the whole ‘breaking news’ scene by heart since i was small. ‘well, the kid flew right over me and blasted a car with its laser vision!’ i wanted to be that child when i grew up :)
Another important note about Mike's character is that when Waternews realises Boo is actually a human child, he immediately defends her. When explaining Randal's plan, you can even briefly hear him refer to her as "that sweet little girl."
Ahhh I love this movie! I had it on VHS lmao. It had bloopers! Mike going "Go throw up." instead of "Go grow up." gets me every time 😂😂😂. I really enjoyed this video! Mike and Sully are the greatest of friends and I love them
They followed the kid with a voice recorder and also attached a mic to her when she was playing and just took the best things they got and added them to the Boo character
I watched this movie in the theater 3 months after 9/11, with my 2 year old son and let me tell you, this movie really got to me, especially when Mr. Waternoose starts talking about how kids these days are harder to scare because it made me think, "Is this our world now? Are our kids going to be so jaded and numbed by the horrible stuff that is happening around them that something as basic as monsters in the closet is not going to even register?" Fortunately, that didn't happen and instead, Monsters Inc proved the perfect movie for the time by showing that not everything is as scary at it seems.
Never caught the notes in Mike's locker. It is a bit odd that they're so successful despite Mike's forgetfulness, but I think that you could probably chock it up to Mike being really smart.
The conversations about imaginary conversations is something I do as well, and when i let out all that unfiltered anger out to myself/no one it makes me realize that i dont really mean or think those things and id feel awful if i did say them
I love Monsters, Inc! Once we had the movie on DVD, my brother and I watched it all the time. My mom also loves Roz and Celia. I remember seeing the movie in the theaters. In the end, when Boo's door is fixed, and Sully opens the door, and he says, "Boo?" and Boo says, "Kitty!" the whole audience said, "Awwww!" I also remember seeing so many Monsters Inc, CDA, and 23-19 GIFs during the early days of the pandemic.
I love how this movie is about the strong bonds of friendship, how Mike and Sully have come to realize just how much they need each other, no matter what happens. And Boo has helped them realize that, especially when they're protecting her from Randall and Waternoose, and by helping her return home. It's not just a "buddy comedy;" it's a movie about true friendship.
Keep in mind during the Sully vs Mike fike scene, Sully recognizes that Boo was kidnapped into the monster world and is seperated from her family. The movie makes it pretty clear that while he does see her like his kid, he knows that she isn't and that she has an actual family that she was torn apart from.
I only realised how sad Boo’s and Sully’s scare scene was when I recently saw a clip of it again. Cinema Therapy talked about how parents must have felt in that moment, but what about the grown ups who have lived through those moments as a kid? Who struggled to love their parent who oftentimes would traumatised them with the with their anger, never acknowledging how badly it has affected the relationship between the both of you. It doesn’t hurt what they did.. it hurts that they never saw or remembered how ugly it was, or even reflected on their actions. I may never have a close relationship with my dad ever, but knowing that he probably also never healed from his past makes me sympathise and somewhat understand him.
As emotional as the ending to Monsters Inc is, Monsters University still gets me more. The scene with Sully and Mike by the lake with them hashing it out is so well written, acted and animated. Plus the films message of 'even if you try your hardest you might not succeed' is a really important one to tell, especially with the backdrop of college/university. So to have Mike & Sully work they way up from the bottom is such a great subversion of expectations.
18:55 I've been doing this unconsciously since the start of my relationship and I feel egomaniacally good about myself now! I have a loving relationship but when I need to vent about my partner's behavior that I don't understand, I wait until I'm home alone and have these imaginary conversations. Then when she comes back I have all the peace of mind to find a middle ground. Good to see that's an actual best practice!
I always struggled with this movie as it deals with letting someone go because it’s the right thing to do for them. Your analysis brought such a warm paternal perspective that I never really read into before. Another movie, which I enjoyed much more as a child but that deals with the same concepts, is Fox and the Hound. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts about the friendship, social pressures, letting go, etc. which that movie dives into.
YES - the imaginary conversation! I didn't even realise this was a therapy technique, but I do the same thing. I have my "Angry version" that I say to myself, out loud - and then I have the polite version once I've calmed down.
This movie is hands down one of my favourite Pixar movies, and has been for quite a while! The characters are fantastic, the world is fun, and Boo is cute, what's not to love!
One of the most iconic parts of this for me was the bloopers at the end, where they actually show bits and pieces of the play that Mike and Sully pretended to be working on, and the twist of "she's out of our hair!" Gets me every time with the, "Oh contrare, we're a pair, I love you."
Monsters Inc. brilliantly recontextualized the Monster-in-the-Closet mythos to convey the story of a beloved worker realizing the damaging effect his job had on kids, and actively choosing to go against the grain to protect one vulnerable child, even at the risk of compromising his own reputation. No voice more fitting for that role than John Goodman, frankly. He's good at sounding like an aged-yet-caring father figure.

You know what's something else I have noticed? And i didn't notice until you guys brought it up about Sully always bailing Mike out. Mike never takes advantage of Sully for it. He thanks Sully for the reservations and he doesn't think to go to Sully for his paperwork, Sully genuinely butts in to help and Mike doesn't abuse that. He's genuinely grateful for his friend and I think that's a testament to eachother's friendship.
I think it's also valuable to note that Mike does do things for Sully. He helps him with his morning routine and motivates him to do his best. He also backs up his friend with a creature that he thinks is highly dangerous because he cares about his friend
It's definitely why their friendship endures the hardship. Mike acts really hard-headed for most of the movie, but he *does* appreciate and care about Sully and is able to come around eventually and do more than just cover for him.

Mary Gibbs, daughter of late storyboard artist Rob Gibbs, voiced Boo when she was only three years old. Because she was too young to sit in a recording booth, they simply followed her around the studio with a microphone, and recorded the things she said, adding to the authencity. She has a RUclips channel, Boo Grown Up, where she recounts growing up as the voice of Boo.

I will say, it's not that Mike doesn't know HOW to file paperwork - it's that he doesn't remember to do it in that ADHD way. It's clear he knows, given his recitation to Sully, *exactly* where everything goes and exactly what to do. It's the doing where the train derails. Which is *very* ADHD in my lived experience.
My daughter is ADH, and that is so characteristic.
Yup. He even has a note in his locker! Didn't realize that until I watched this video, even though I've watched the movie three or four times.
It is probably also the not-exclusively-ADHD-but-definitely-neurodivergent thing where we find ourselves separating the things that make us happy and fulfilled, from the things that don't, and those in the "don't" category get forgotten because our brain has written them off as not enjoyable, not dopamine-sparking. In Monsters University, Mike is shown to know very well how to do school work and take care of tasks and sort information, but in that context at that time, it made him happy to do it. If I were to overthink it, it would all come together as evidence of Monsters Inc Mike not feeling inspired or satisfied by that aspect of his job anymore, and his ADHD brain responding by throwing it out. Him being so excited to jump into the comedy role and give that admin side up concludes that perfectly, and his role in Monsters At Work validates it.

My dad passed away when I was seven years old and this was his favorite movie. Every year I would watch this movie on his birthday. Today is his birthday. It’s also my last day at college and I graduate this weekend, following in his steps of being a teacher. It means the world to me that this is the video that y’all released today. Feels like a sign that my dad is proud of me for everything I accomplished.

12:57 I love this shot. Sully really never saw it how the children (technically victim) must see him and all monsters when “they were just doing their job”.
He did see the fear, but he’s never let it sit with him before. He’s never been there for the aftermath, what happens AFTER he scares them. He was utterly detached from his actions until now, he probably thought these “dangerous” kids just go on to live their lives normally after he scares them. So it’s the first time he’s seeing the consequences of what he’s doing (and seeing himself doing it).
I love how understated Mike's care is for Sully. He says "I care about you" from his actions while Sully says it with gestures and words. It's a great lesson for kids that people demonstrate love in unique ways.

One of the most underappreciated facts about this movie is the dynamic between Mike and Sully, in a genre of buddy movies saturated with the conflict of an unlikely duo becoming friends by the end, it’s great to see a movie start off with two established best friends, which not only allows the story to have better pacing, but also makes the moments where Mike & Sully conflict much more believable and emotional
The part where Sully scares Boo breaks my heart every time. That poor wee girl. Always makes me cry.
I did this to my daughter a few months ago. We had a newborn baby, and we were exhausted. My little girl just wanted my attention and I snapped at her. All she wanted was to show me a picture she drew of her and me, and I hurt her.
Don't feel bad Mama Bear. You got alot on your plate and we all do it accidentally at some point. I hope your little girl knows her mummy loves her loads.

Yeah, I took the disability angle too. At the end, Mike DIDN'T succeed, but its okay. Sully grew more confident and gained a real friend.

Actually, that's a good point that I've never realized before. It's so common for boys to be taught that you shouldn't cry, and then we see Sully - a big, powerful monster - cry at the end of this film. He feels grief, and he's allowed to feel grief, and no one tells him it isn't okay. In fact, something like that would feel completely alien in a film like this.
A Monsters University episode has so much potential: talks about failure, unrealistic expectations, coming to term with one's own limitations, finding sideways and alternative goals that don't end up in betraying yourself...

I just noticed at 9:46 Mike is saying "Come on somebody else is going to find the kid. It will be their problem not ours" right infront of Roz and she is watching them, turning her head slowly 😱 The foreshadowing.
Whats lovely about the end of this film with the additional context of the prequel film made many years later is the knowledge that Mike initially dreamed of being a professional scarer but didn't succeed in it because he wasn't scary enough.
But now Mike is perfectly suited to be a clown/comedian and doing the same job of collecting energy and laughs are even more potent.
He had given up his dream and resolved himself to just being an assistant/coach and now he's a star!
This film was a fantastic allegory for students with learning disabilities, mental disorders such as: ADHD, Anxiety, Autism etc as well as physical disabilities.
It's also a good allegory for so many highly competitive jobs such as being an actor or musician. Even if you have the grades and the training and work your butt off there's no guarantee that you can make it big because there's elements beyond your control. For example, Mike doesn't have "the look" which ultimately doesn't make him appealing (scary). Ugly actors/actresses and singers/musicians struggle significantly more than attractive people even if the attractive people are less talented.
But overall the story is: Sometimes you can do absolutely everything right and put your heart and soul into working hard but still not succeed. Maybe you are not actually suited to it, maybe you just don't have the talent.
Believing in yourself sometimes isn't enough.
I want to thank you, Jono for talking about the "Imaginary Conversation". I do this all the time to get negative thoughts out and I always worry that I'm doing something wrong, or strange, or going crazy. Hearing that approval from a person of professional knowledge on the matter of mental health was extremely validating. Thank you so much for that
I've tried this and it always turns into an argument happening in my head. How do you stop that from happening?
I’m no therapist, but the same thing tends to happen to me too. I’ve come to understand (so far) that the perpetual hypothetical argument sometimes comes from a lack of confidence in my relationship with the person. I can’t imagine that they care about me, so I imagine that they won’t listen, or that they’ll invalidate me, or anything else in that vein.
In those moments, I try to challenge myself by asking what I’m trying to achieve by characterizing that person in this way. It’s not fair to them or to myself for me to make them that person in my mind.
Sometimes though, I just let a hyper-dramatic moment play out! I get it all out of my system and then ask myself, “Ok, now what would happen realistically?”
Like anything else on earth, it takes practice. Just try to be patient with yourself. 💚
Scully scaring Boo will never not hurt and break my heart.😭 I just love the trope of someone seeing another person they know and care about as a monster, basically appearing unrecognizable to them whether in a literal or metaphorical sense.🥺
Also, this movie has one of my favorite lines ever in a Pixar movie with: “Mama! Another gator got in the house!” “Another gator! Give me that shovel!”😂😂😂
I love that they clearly have experience with gators in the house, but they see Randall, who doesn't look anything like a gator, and Trailer Mama doesn't even hesitate with that shovel. Poor Randall 😅

My dad was a man who wanted to be loving, but he loved selfishly. So when he'd rage at me and my sister, which happened at the littlest inconvenience and assumption, instead of softening when he saw our tears and terror, he took that shame spiral and grew angrier at us for crying.
Bizarrely, there were other times when he was deeply compassionate. But we never knew who we were going to get. And thus, the trauma bond.
My point though: thank you to those who do soften when you've made a mistake with how your temper breaks. I can only imagine how healing that accountability can be.
Wow me and my sister had a similar relationship with my mom. She never backed down when we were crying helplessly in fact she'd get more furious and her insults would get more brutal when we apologized over and over again. So I didn't even KNOW that scene was supposed to represent a parent losing their temper with their child and feeling guilty since I used to count the days I didn't cry. Thank you for sharing your experience, it weirdly feels ... better to see Im not the only one. Although ı am deeply sorry for what happened, my best wishes to you and your sister. Look out for each other.
@bilgeakaln6335 I'm so sorry you and your sister dealt with such mercilessly poor mothering. You did nothing to deserve that kind of cruelty. Be kind to yourself. My sister and I have thankfully healed through the years with faith and therapy, but the scars will always be there, for all of us. I do know that I'm kinder today because I never want to hurt someone like that. While it doesn't make my dad's behavior okay, it has taught me that our choices matter, and it also means that beauty came from ashes. Even the destruction of a wildfire doesn't last forever. After the devastation, the soil is richer and more what's planted there will flourish. What that is we plant is where our power lies. 🫂
I am in the exact same position. My dad is a very loving but very angry man, and he is only willing to love in his own way. He’s gone through a lot of trauma himself but all he’s done is paid that sadness forward. I’ve been Boo many times in my life, only difference is that, unlike Sully, he never softened. He’s “better” now in the sense that he’s a bit calmer, but he will still yell and say the cruelest things in his anger which is brought on by the smallest of inconveniences. He rarely apologises - I can remember once where he apologised without saying “I’m sorry you are so sensitive” or “I’m sorry you feel that way”, and that was when I was like, 9. He never takes accountability since he repeats the same mistakes over and over. He always says “when I’m angry I say things I don’t mean, so just ignore me” but it’s hard to ignore a man who, when he yells, can be heard by people on the street through closed windows. Some of what he has said to me has stayed and has made me feel that I am too stupid to do anything or live alone, or that my opinions don’t matter and are dumb so I should just shut up. It’s affected my ability to form friends since I often overthink situations and worry they see me as annoying, too chatty, and stupid. I know it will take a lot of work to get his voice out of my head, but thank you for sharing your story and advice

And it shouldn’t be upto you, a kid nonetheless to take the responsibility of dealing with an adult’s actions. Im sorry for our shitty parents’ behavior. I promise it’ll get better, not because you learn to “ignore it” or just “deal with it” but because you put your mental health and well being before their selfishness.
@Annie-b2i I'm so sorry. 🫂 It's uncanny how similar the behavior you've described is to how my dad was (he passed when I turned 19). I know what you mean: even knowing his words were not the truth, they still stab. When inundated, it's like a steady drip of poison in your ear. The accumulation weakens even the strongest over time. And the lack of true - particularly, of true and *lasting* - accountability adds insult to injury. May we all be brave and accountable enough to draw a line in the sand and say, "It ran in my family, UNTIL it ran into me."
I'd say Mike is more than an assistant, he's also like a sports coach or manager. We see this expanded upon in Monsters Uni but you see it right at the start of Inc as well - he keeps Sully fit, puts him through scare exercises, comes up with the tactics. Sully even calls him "coach" at the end of Uni.
I know "scare assistant" is the proper job title for Mike and the others but I feel it doesn't quite do justice to the role they play!

I had the DVD with all the extras, I watched those shorts SO many times, as well as the blooper reels. Why don't they do blooper reels for their movies anymore?
To think they weren't even real "bloopers", the animators had to spend extra time and resources to produce them. They weren't like a whoopsie they caught while filming. It's just a wild amount of commitment.
My favorite bloopers are the ones in Toy Story 2. That had some good ones. 😆
However I haven’t seen Monsters Inc in a long time so I don’t remember much about it.
12:55 the new Disney+ series, Monsters at Work, Sully explains that the main reason he wanted to go with laugh power, was because when he saw that he scared Boo, it didn’t just scare her, it really hurt her, and if it hurt her, it probably hurt all the other children who they were scaring as well. So therefore, he didn’t want to hurt the children anymore, so that’s why they went with laughs instead of screams.
One thing I do like about the movie is that scaring human children is the normal and not considered immoral in that world (and the fact it runs their technology). Silly doenst even see it wrong till he sees how it affects Boo.
And that change does have a positive effect where by the end of the movie the entire Economy changes where making children laugh is better for them and the mature world (as laughter is 10X more Effective anyways)
I recently wrote my final university paper on Monsters University being viewed from the perspective of disability, and it really made me view their 'break-up' scene in the cave differently. It was always Mike's dream to be a scarer, and the only reason he couldn't is because he was born into a body that just isn't scary. I think, despite their undeniably strong friendship, Mike always held a pinch of resentment towards Sulley getting to live out his dream and be everything he wanted to be, and hearing Sulley say "None of that matters now" brought all of that resentment boiling up. I adore both of these films so much, and I'm so glad you're covering this one! Maybe that means MU is coming up at some point too?
I wasnt a parent, but I am a much older brother, like 10 years older than the oldest of the second set to three. And that sully moment hits hard now. Ive been there.

My big sister still expresses grief for her past behavior toward me when she was a teen, she's 31 and I'm 25 now. My big brother is 29, They were both rather cruel, and I was "the baby" of the family. I got a lot of tough love and bad days to recount with those two. However. I learned to forgive, and understand, because while yes they're my big siblings, they were only 7, 10, 15, 17 etc. like they were only kids when I was a kid too. It was their first time also, and holding that against them would keep them from being better people now. They're both my best friends now, and things are good. I see my big sister often, and my big brother and I talk as often as we remember too lol
@@tommytoon_stories oh I mean for me it was kinda like in the film tho, it hurt being outside her door after I snapped and screamed, hearing her cry inside locking me out while I was apologizing, but the next day it was back to normal, I'm generally a very calm person but that's only cause I kinda just... don't express any emotions until it all builds up and I explode, tho rarely at other people, it's bad when it's at other people. Usually just screaming into my pillow, I think there are people I've had people call me a robot, like I'm high-school.
wow you guys must be wonderful, my mom usually loved to scare her daughters until they were a crying whimpering mess that would beg her to stop. And she never did. So. But hey at least my relationship with my big sis is great and I'll always love her. Don't worry the lil siblings won't hold grudge, just hug them afterwards and give some chocolate

from what I understand, the scene when Sully starts singing base with Mike's lead, was actually improvised by John Goodman. Billy Crystal and John Goodman recorded that session together and that's what they went with.
The thing I love most about this movie is that Sully and Mike are already long-time best friends when the story starts instead of recycling the formula of putting two characters together who initially can’t stand each other (that was saved for Monsters University lol)
PIXAR just nails at their story telling.
The first time I watched this film, it was on TV. I was 6, and my sister(then 10) and I had a small fight. We didn't talk through this entire film because we were mad at each other. We were just silent and didn't even let out our laughs because we needed to show how affected we were from the fight we had...until the climax. When Boo opens the door to scare Sully, I experienced a sort of sadness like never before... it was new to me. My sister left to another room only for me to find that she was crying, and I started crying and both of us were hugging and crying. Been a fan since then.

My understanding is that they got what they could from the actress in the booth and then just let wander around playing and had someone following her and recording. So they combined actual child play sounds and the dialogue in the edit to get the performance.

The best part of growing up watching these Pixar movies was the DVD bonus content. Behind the scenes, bloopers and even games, each one was packed with hours of extra content. You can tell a lot of the people working there love it and want to go above and beyond in delivering their movies.
I have a recording of the movie, bloopers and musical with British audio description, which always brightens my day. I have to check out Monsters Uni now!

When you guys mentioned that Mike is ADHD coded I was floored. I grew up watching this movie on DVD over and over, and I got diagnosed with ADHD almost 2 years ago. But it all makes perfect sense! No wonder I always liked Mike growing up haha

I just realized that finding out that laughter being 10x more powerful than screams must have been a dream come true and an emotional moment for Mike. The context that Monsters University gives us of Mike's desire to be a scarer and being told over and over that he's not scary and watching him accept that makes the scene where he finally does get to shine on the "scare" floor really special.
Hearing Alan go from "Unlicensed Film Maker" to "Professional Film Maker" is just music to my ears.
I think its interesting to see this movie again after the Prequal came out. I don't remember much, but I remember that Mike was so upset that he wasn't a scary monster that couldn't be taken seriously but had a heavy passion for scaring. And on the other hand, Sully is a jock-like character, whose known for being great for what he does and has so much potential. Their dreams were aligned, but Mike's was so much stronger. So seeing Sully be so quick and willing to throw it all away, when they were so close to their dream, is a lot less painful for Sully to let go of than Mike. As a kid I used to always dislike how Mike handled their problems, but as I get older I start to understand the frustration attached to it. Mike is sadly super reliant on Sully, and Sully is only reliant on Mike in regards to scaring, so if he throws that away, Mike has much less than Sully. The only thing that he really had for himself was his love, which was also stripped away from him when he was banished. Its understandable why he's so scared and frustrated because even if he complained every step of the way, he still supported Sully til the very end.
This movie has definitely decreased in notoriety as Pixar's repertoire has expanded through the years, but I will always maintain it has one of the most beautiful endings, ever. That last ultimate-best-friend gesture from Mike for Sully with repairing Boo's door gets you ready for the sweetness, and then the decision to hold on Sully's face as it morphs from uncertainty to joy while Boo says "Kitty" is just so quietly moving. I love it so much. And then this was the era of the Pixar bloopers, so I will never un-hear "Go throw up" from Mike when he gets the line, "Go grow up." Man, I loved those bloopers. They were the best. Not to mention they went a step further in this film by giving us snippets of Mike's musical. My husband and I will still occasionally sing, "She's out of our hair . . . and just when I dared . . . to care," etc.
That scene with the simulator, to me, not only did Sully realize that he broke Boo’s trust in that moment, but he also realized that his career had been traumatizing young children.

I've always watched it in Latin America Spanish and I love the voice actress of Boo. They had the VA of Homer Simpson for Roz, and his daughter was Boo. She's so good.
Please cover Monsters University next. It deeply resonates for those who have the inability to make their dreams come true verses a character that needed to be humbled. It's the perfect set up for Monsters Inc. And it's one I deeply relate with.

This movie is so great. It's one of those movies that's about 99% memes, but when you watch it again, you're reminded just what a masterpiece it is. I’ve worked with a lot of neurodivergent kids. I usually work with them for 4-6 months and we form a bond, and I get sad when it’s time to say goodbye, but it was never something that overly affected me emotionally.
Early in my career, when I was about 19, I started working with this kid who brought me so much joy. I couldn’t explain it. He just made me so happy and I just wanted to protect him from everything. I ended up working with him for almost a year before he left the clinic.
I can’t get through scene where Sully says goodbye to Boo without gut wrenching sobbing because I’m immediately taken back to that day where I had to part ways with that sweet kid

Honestly I love that deep dive into what is a buddy VS a Friend! I used to think both words meant the same thing but it’s way more than meets the eye. Friendship definitely evolve when people change, one can want to grow while the other wants to stay the same. That’s when you realize that buddy relationship isn’t going to work out anymore. No one is the bad guy here, we just want different things. I wish I noticed this lesson sooner since I used to watch this movie all the time as a kid but I guess that’s the beauty of growing up and seeing things from a whole different perspective.
God i remember watching this as an adult again and wondering why Boo being scared made me so sad. As i grew up, the instinct to take care of smaller things grew stronger. But also the awareness that adults hold a certain presence over kids

Being a freshman in college gives me such a new perspective on the final scene where Sully leaves Boo. Sully represents my parents, my siblings, my friends, everyone that I had in my life, my whole childhood. And now I have had to say goodbye and they aren’t there anymore when I open the door to my room. I know I’ll see them again but it’s the I open the door and they’re not there that really gets me.

Another important note about Mike's character is that when Waternews realises Boo is actually a human child, he immediately defends her. When explaining Randal's plan, you can even briefly hear him refer to her as "that sweet little girl."

They followed the kid with a voice recorder and also attached a mic to her when she was playing and just took the best things they got and added them to the Boo character
I watched this movie in the theater 3 months after 9/11, with my 2 year old son and let me tell you, this movie really got to me, especially when Mr. Waternoose starts talking about how kids these days are harder to scare because it made me think, "Is this our world now? Are our kids going to be so jaded and numbed by the horrible stuff that is happening around them that something as basic as monsters in the closet is not going to even register?" Fortunately, that didn't happen and instead, Monsters Inc proved the perfect movie for the time by showing that not everything is as scary at it seems.
Never caught the notes in Mike's locker. It is a bit odd that they're so successful despite Mike's forgetfulness, but I think that you could probably chock it up to Mike being really smart.

I love Monsters, Inc! Once we had the movie on DVD, my brother and I watched it all the time. My mom also loves Roz and Celia.
I remember seeing the movie in the theaters. In the end, when Boo's door is fixed, and Sully opens the door, and he says, "Boo?" and Boo says, "Kitty!" the whole audience said, "Awwww!"
I also remember seeing so many Monsters Inc, CDA, and 23-19 GIFs during the early days of the pandemic.
I love how this movie is about the strong bonds of friendship, how Mike and Sully have come to realize just how much they need each other, no matter what happens. And Boo has helped them realize that, especially when they're protecting her from Randall and Waternoose, and by helping her return home. It's not just a "buddy comedy;" it's a movie about true friendship.
Keep in mind during the Sully vs Mike fike scene, Sully recognizes that Boo was kidnapped into the monster world and is seperated from her family. The movie makes it pretty clear that while he does see her like his kid, he knows that she isn't and that she has an actual family that she was torn apart from.
I only realised how sad Boo’s and Sully’s scare scene was when I recently saw a clip of it again.
Cinema Therapy talked about how parents must have felt in that moment, but what about the grown ups who have lived through those moments as a kid? Who struggled to love their parent who oftentimes would traumatised them with the with their anger, never acknowledging how badly it has affected the relationship between the both of you.
It doesn’t hurt what they did.. it hurts that they never saw or remembered how ugly it was, or even reflected on their actions.
I may never have a close relationship with my dad ever, but knowing that he probably also never healed from his past makes me sympathise and somewhat understand him.
As emotional as the ending to Monsters Inc is, Monsters University still gets me more.
The scene with Sully and Mike by the lake with them hashing it out is so well written, acted and animated.
Plus the films message of 'even if you try your hardest you might not succeed' is a really important one to tell, especially with the backdrop of college/university.
So to have Mike & Sully work they way up from the bottom is such a great subversion of expectations.

I'm so glad they did not give this a sequel. They left it to the audience to imagine how Mike and Boo might have kept meeting as she grows.
I always struggled with this movie as it deals with letting someone go because it’s the right thing to do for them. Your analysis brought such a warm paternal perspective that I never really read into before. Another movie, which I enjoyed much more as a child but that deals with the same concepts, is Fox and the Hound. I would LOVE to hear your thoughts about the friendship, social pressures, letting go, etc. which that movie dives into.
YES - the imaginary conversation! I didn't even realise this was a therapy technique, but I do the same thing. I have my "Angry version" that I say to myself, out loud - and then I have the polite version once I've calmed down.
It's SO effective.
This movie is hands down one of my favourite Pixar movies, and has been for quite a while! The characters are fantastic, the world is fun, and Boo is cute, what's not to love!
One of the most iconic parts of this for me was the bloopers at the end, where they actually show bits and pieces of the play that Mike and Sully pretended to be working on, and the twist of "she's out of our hair!" Gets me every time with the, "Oh contrare, we're a pair, I love you."

Monsters Inc. brilliantly recontextualized the Monster-in-the-Closet mythos to convey the story of a beloved worker realizing the damaging effect his job had on kids, and actively choosing to go against the grain to protect one vulnerable child, even at the risk of compromising his own reputation. No voice more fitting for that role than John Goodman, frankly. He's good at sounding like an aged-yet-caring father figure.
I would love to see you guys talk about redirecting goals and careers in Monsters University because Mike’s and Sully’s journey is very down-to-earth and relatable
