- Lyrics:
Oh, Eileen Og and that the darlin's name is
Oh, through the Barony her features they were famous
And, if we loved her then who was there to blame us
For wasn't she the Pride of Petravore?
But her beauty made us all so shy
Not a man could look her in the eye
And boys, oh boys, sure that's the reason why
We're in mournin' for the Pride of Petravore
And, Eileen Og my heart is growing grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
And, Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea
But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore
Now, friday at the fair of Ballintubber
Eileen met McGrath the cattle jobber
I'd like to set me mark upon the robber
For he stole away the Pride of Petravore
Now, he never seemed to see the girl at all
Even when she ogled him from underneath her shawl
Looking big and masterful when she was looking small
Most provoking for the Pride of Petravore
And, Eileen Og my heart is growing grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
And, Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea
But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore
And, so it went as it was in the beginning
Eileen Og was bent upon the winning
And, Big McGrath contentedly was grinning
Being courted by the Pride of Petravore
Says he: "I know a girl that could knock you into fits"
At that Eileen nearly lost her wits
And the upshot of the ruction was that now the robber sits
With his arm around the Pride of Petravore
And, Eileen Og my heart is growing grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
And, Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea
But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore
And boys, oh boys, ye' with fate it's hard to grapple
And of my eye, sure Eileen was the apple
And, now to see her walking to the chapel
With the hardest featured man in Petravore
Oh now, boys, this is all I have to say:
When you do your courting make no display
If you want them to run after you, just walk the other way
For they're mostly like the Pride of Petravore
And, Eileen Og my heart is growing grey,
Ever since the day you wandered far away
And, Eileen Og there's good fish in the sea
But there's none of them like the Pride of Petravore - Видеоклипы
Great version. What a great songwriter Percy French was, and blessed with great humour.
Irish Descendants have one major feature that sets them apart from (almost) any other performer - you can actually hear and understand every single word. Con's voice is so rich. This is without doubt the best version of 'Eileen Óg'.
Mike Hanrahan is singing here
Have You found it yet on Spotify?? I just can't😭
Very well enunciated and nicely articulated! Timing of the syllables and emphasis is partly key to making it crystal clear to the ear.
Best version I've ever heard of this song! Thanks, lads.
Yap!!!
This is my second favorite version. In my opinion, you can't beat The Dubliners for this song

If I could like this 1000 more times, I would. I've loved this song since I was a child, but I've never heard two of these verses. They flesh out the story so well.
I LOVE it! Thank you! My Irish dad used to dance about the house singing this when I was a wee tot.
Best song of Irish Descendants :-)
Greetings from Germany
Also known as The Pride Of Petravore, the original lyrics were written by Percy French [1854-1920] with music by William Houston Collisson [1865-1920]. This variant was arranged and recorded by the Irish Descendants as track #10 on their 2004 CD Across The Water (Kells Music, Green Island, New York, recorded in 1993 at Studio 92, Toronto, Ontario). Thanks for sharing. :-)
I say this song is a lament. The lamenting narrator felt Eileen was out of his class, as did his mates, so he didn't try to court her and neither did his mates.
There is another, unspoken tragedy to this song. Poor, Eileen had only ugly Big McGrath to pursue or be pursued by. She settled for an indifferent man, one that probably would not have provided and loved as the narrator would have done.
The take away is to never limit oneself in romance or any endeavor. The pain of trying and failing is nothing compared to the pain of regret for never making the effort.
No, Eileen fell in love with McGrath BECAUSE he ignored her. Unfortunately, a lot of women (young me included) only are interested in men that don't pursue us or even actively reject us.
@ Georgie No, I'd say the song has more of a humorous note, and the final advice to young men seems to be given with a twinkle of the eye. Maybe it's more a jocular insight into human weakness than real tragedy.
Georgie Patton -- there is a part of regretting not to have tried, yes. But the (intentionally) weird conclusion that is drawn is that one should use the same cheap dating artist tricks like McGrath. That's neither deep nor dark-romantic, it just fits the speaker's self-pitying tone, who also says: "That guy stole her from us."
But on the other side I wouldn't say the speaker being depicted as self-pitying was pure mockery of his feelings -- that would be too simple as well.
Well said.
@Y Ddraig Goch I disagree aswell. There is also acceptance of one's fate, not just regret....
I love that song (youre versjon) 👍
I listen to it evry day on my phone ☺
I love the songs of The Irish Decsendants, love Irish music, the versjon of "Come out you black and tans" Rules! 😎 keep on all good work lads!!

I think every single man has his very own "Eileen Og" lost to some other guy..
And every woman has got a narrator she's missing out on.
Not like she was yours to begin with.
It may be so but Yamamoto Tsunetomo says that a wife of a samurai never marries twice, so in the end who the fook is Eileen Og
No kidding, we all have that “ one”
She might've been as pretty as you saw her- but she wasn't that sweet- find the sweet girl
It amazes me how rich these lyrics are. I love that.
I don't how I found this song but I am glad I did.
49 lads were left behind by Eileen
It's a very-very fantastic adaptation! I hope more people will see this video soon!!

Cool Video and Music
Good music mate, Cheers!
Una bonita versión de esta clásica canción irlandesa
J'adore..Une de mes préférées .. Bravo..
People are constantly misinterpretating this song.
It's not about love. It's about double standards and men's hipocrisy. Lyrical subject is in love with girl who seemed to be "out of his league", because she was more confident and more attractive than him - he knows that there's lot of pretty girls around him, but he wants none but Eileen. But then, when she falls in love with guy who seems to be "out of her league", because he's more confident and (by her standards, probably) more attractive, the lyrical subject comes to the conclusion that most girls want none but guys out of their league.
He's obviously projecting, and he doesn't truly love Eileen - he doesn't say a word about her personality, habits or preferences, all he can see is her beauty. We can't say if she's happy with McGrath - well, we know him only from words of dude who's in love with his wife - but it's absolutely obvious that she wouldn't be happy with the lyrical subject. He would probably loss all his interest with her just after noticing that she's not "Pride of Petravore", but average human being.
Thanks ❗Спасибо ❗

Where is their version of The Lark In theMorning?
There's a guy who does a lovely lamenting version of this song at the Crane bar in Galway. Much sadder...as it should be.
michael hanrahan is the singer isnt he amazing
He's the best
Just wonderful!
He’s an Irish descendant from Newfoundland, Just like me!
For anyone that may be unsure, it is clear to me that the message of the song is that the song writer had to learn the hard way that girls seem to have an inexplicable attraction towards men that are confidently apathetic towards them. The song writer mentions that McGrath teased Eileen and displayed no interest in her. For some reason this was attractive to her and the songwriter notes that a lot of girls are this way.
I don't know about that. My friend Vasiliy would have trumpled this all by the only and the only power of Love and the Peace. And also by the power of me. Because you can never expect to sincerely to use the power of Love and expect that nobody would not interwine in the process of you making a better world. But since I was already made, this is okey. I'll try to make this world as well as it can be.
everthing said not bad for a group formed from nfld. fisherman

yes!
We’re a very proud people
What I like the most about this song is how unreliable the narrator is. For all we know McGrath was an alright bloke, and the 2 of them made a perfectly fine couple. But because of their jealousy Eileen's other suitors might be twisting the story to make him seem like a villain who "stole away" their girl.
disagree
@@senseibelwederski8188 POV
I disagree, The song touches on him being a criminal and a bad bloke who doesn’t care much for her.

@Chuck Palomo: Absolutely! Well-done! Not everyone catches that
I received a message today, that Eileen is coming with positive actions.
So who are these 4 lads ??
Four guys from Canada with irish roots, hence the name of the band. Although the lineup has changed over the years. The group here aren't the original four. Only two members of the original four are left. For a while it was just one, but Larry Murphy returned to the band a couple of years back
