This song was written in the 18th century, the main road to Dublin from the west started in Tuam. Tuam was a much bigger town than Galway at that time and a commercial hub, the path taken is that of the dail riada , which is a line of eskers the result of glacial erosion hence the rocks, this line stretches west to east in Ireland and they can be seen today if you follow the old road. This song was also an influence on Tuam band the saw doctors release N17 which describes leaving Tuam / Ireland to emigrate to America, much like this song did at its time
I remember the Esker Riada. It was a wavy line of gravel stretching right across the country. A glacial remnant now sadly completely removed for road building

The single Irish branch of my family tree must be possessing me or something, I’ve been listening to this on loop
Can not stop listening to it!
Gives me goosebumps!

My daughter and I were supposed to see the High Kings in Annapolis last year. The show kept getting rescheduled and finally it was time for her to come home to Texas. Seeing the High Kings live, just one of many experiences I’ll never have, so sad.
