Great review, I've been considering the power access assist to replace my old powerassist. Been concerned about the quality of SOG after I threw away a power access multi tool. I have both the Surge and the SOG powerassist. Surge sits in my truck. Got the surge while deployed and found it cumbersome and frustrating especially full of sand. Powerassist replaced it and stuck on my MOLLE everywhere I went and fun as hell to flick when you are sitting around bored in the dirt lol. I loved the Ease of use.
I was very pissed at SOG for putting that belt cutter, turns out its the most used tool on mine. I cut everything from packets, zip ties, etc. with it. I was on a factory installation I unpacked all the machines and stuff with it. I did a 180 on it.
I hope at some point you’ll be able to customize these tools. If you’re a farmer you’ll need different tools than an electrician. I think it would be a great idea.
I have used both and found that the sog for cutting cable and wire is better on that. I love my leatherman surge but the weight is a factor now. I also found that the power access sticks and found that one of the blades move over to the inside under the pleirs and once you move it a little it moves back. after using it for a while though it has not done it for a bit. when it sticks look at the one blade and see if it is moved over just a little and holding up the tool from moving. that is what i found when using mine. great review.
4:48 exactly, finally, someone mentioned this. I sold my Charge because of this and got a simple Rebar with the simple bit kit. Purely based on price what is the point if the setup time the same or longer as a half priced tool. You have to remove the double sided bit, hope you have an empty slot In the holder, connect the extender, find the new bit, hope you don’t drop the whole pack In to the tank of bleach etc. When you finished put back everything as it was. And when you forgot your bit kit your tool good as dead. Rebar at least full function without bits, thanks to the longer implements. Sometimes less is more.
@@hvacbudget8600 I might have to wait a bit longer since i just bought a Gerber diesel and its otw from Amazon US. Need to "recharge" my wallet first and probably waiting for some additional discount. It was cheaper last month but i missed the chance. Update: Just ordered mine from Amazon US. There was a small price marked down and i bought it for USD101 (including shipping to malaysia). Just noticed price went down a bit more, so managed to cancel the existing order since my card is not charged / not shipped yet. Re-place order at USD98.81 instead. lol. Better get it eventhough my i already have a "burnt" wallet. Get it at a cheaper price while i can.
2:30 you say you dont know why the pliers catch on the sog. Its because the long tools on teh sog flex inwards into the path of te pliers as they are closing. There seems to be no retainer to stop them from flexing into the path of the plier head. If they fixed that, threw in a small pair of scissors and replaced that seat belt cutter with a t-shank adapter, it would be the perfect tool IMO
Great review I own both and think both are great multi tools. I do like the SOG a little bit more and that’s the weight and being able to use full size 1/4” bits add an extension and you are set. The Surge heavy duty bits are less useful but you get a lot of tools for your money.
Great review. Personally, I think the Super Tool 300 takes a backseat to the Surge. I know the Surge has outside accessible implements which is great for crawl spaces and tight quarters and scissors to add. However the 300 offers everything except the scissors without having to interchange the file, saw and has the same plier head as the Surge. The Surge is great, I don't own but its easier to clean the 300 due to less crevices. I use mine for yard work and have it on my side when running a chainsaw, aside from having it as my everyday carry. It is truly my favorite Leatherman after 5 months of carry.
I agree that it is interesting how it is impossible to declare either the Surge or the ST300 as "The Best" compared with the other, because the ranking depends on each user's occupation, current situation, etc. Each has pros and cons depending on situation. This also dovetails exactly with what another commenter said nearby regarding Charge versus Rebar. The Rebar or ST300 can win in situations when the user wants certain drivers without even bothering with bit swapping.
If only it had scissors it would hit home run for me. Scissors and better knife steel? Heck, why no one does that? (I dont like the arc bc of its shape it’s uncomfortable)
I'm curious, how often you use a multitool versus dedicated tools in your HVAC job? I'm assuming you have a tool belt/pouch you regularly wear on your job? Perhaps a video on your normal workday loadout, would be interesting to seel
Bro,they make a nylon sheath for surge available now, also second generation automatically comes with thst nylon expandable sheath for bits an extra blades I love .in an can't complain
just picked mine up for $60 at a trading post. very hefty, the holster is well -made and fits everything nice and snug, my first multi tool, feel like i made a good choice. I saw a video of someone doing one handed opening but mine is not capable of that.
From my experience with both, surge is more versatile, st300 better build quality. Surge build quality is seriously embarrassing and they justify it with “being an hard job use tool”, but smaller tool will open randomly, knives will open in your pocket, t shank adaptor isn’t as secure as it should be and if you press hard enough while sawing you will pop it up, et cetera.
I personally didn't like the st300 at all. It's got some pretty good tools but the ergonomics when using the plier are really poor and frankly a deal breaker for me. I am also not the biggest fan of having no outside opening tools.
@@clintwestwood3539, I've not any those issues with mine an I've been hard with mine, got mine broken in an can close it one handed an flick it open one handed
I have both and I used each for several months on a farm. They’re both amazing tools but for me, the leatherman surge is the better tool for two reasons - the interchangeable T-shank attachments and the ratcheting screwdriver. The flat bits that come with the surge are absolutely amazing…I can’t tell how you many times I needed an Allen head, star head, etc. and I had it on me. Beautifully engineered tool. Either way, you can’t go wrong!
The 1/4" bit driver on the SOG is a win for me. I just bought a Leatherman Surge at a flee market for $10,00 last week, but I would prefer the SOG PowerAccess Assist. Thanx for the video my Brother 👍 ⚔️ ✝️ 🇺🇲
Can I ask if you've any second thoughts about the sog after using it for a longer period of time, how do you find the ergonomics of the sog, I've heard a few people say it feels as if it digs into them. Thanks for your hard work and reviews. I've got the surge, just wondering if it's the right call.
I love the SOG! I don't notice it digging into my hand but if you would crank down on something I could see how it could happen. I really like the assisted blades. I know it's gimmicky but on a big tool like this it's really cool!
That wear on the leatherman pouch is some extreme abuse. My dad is a carpenter and he has used a similar leatherman pouch daily on the job for close to 15 years and it doesn't look that beaten. And no, my dad isn't extremely gentle on his tools or anything.
@@hvacbudget8600 Thanks. Please do tell the full story. Another video how to make this tool is very valuable. In fact, you should send this idea to Leatherman and see if they would pick this up as an accessory for the Surge. This is one tool all multi-tools is missing from their accessories.
I do think you should patent your idea, build a prototype and see how it works. This is one thing that is missing from all makers of multi-tools. You are a genius!

Thank for the video. Surge is the first "high end" multi took i have owned and absolutely love it.

waiting for surge.3
I must say the Surge work better with the complete kit (bit, ratchet stantard bit bearer, spare blade, standard bit kit, long bit bearer etc...).
I hope at some point you’ll be able to customize these tools. If you’re a farmer you’ll need different tools than an electrician. I think it would be a great idea.
This is exactly why I'll never buy a riveted (Victorinox) multitool. If it doesn't have bolts or screws you can't modify or fix it !

Good analysis into that sticking, I'll have to check into that.
I have been thinking about buying the SOG because of the bits. You can buy them anywhere to replace them. Leatherman uses special bits.

Very true.
Most people would make the mistake of using it as a flat driver. The chisel isn't very useful as a chisel either so it's a wasted tool slot.
