One Minute Bunkai: Wansu Sho #1

  • One Minute Bunkai: This is the signature movement from the Tomari Wansu Kata of the Kyan Lineage passed on to him by Pechin Maeda. There is another longer version of this Kata that can be called "Dai". Most styles just use the short "Wansu" name. This is another terrific series of techniques representing close quarter fighting (in reality isn't all real fighting close quarter?). It is full of Tuite (seize and control) techniques that have the potential to break multiple joints and tear much tissue in one bold move. This is old school Karate at its best (I'm referring about the Kata not the performers). The most common bunkai is the standard Judo "Kata Guruma" (fireman's carry) throw which is often misunderstood by those without proper training in Judo/Jujitsu.

    Love the simplicity of the bunkai, which means this will work in a real fight. Nothing flashy or elaborate is usually valid during combat.

  • @TheMisterGuy

    I like the realism of this bunkai, and the fact that it's not overcomplicated, low-percentage moves that only work in very specific settings and utterly fail if anything is slightly off.

    I'm a recent subscriber but I love these videos. They are short, practical and well executed (and edited). I enjoy seeing traditional techniques front and center in the modern world. Combat is combat. The human body hasn't really changed. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge with us.

    Dear gojumaster,
    Altho I primarily practice and teach Shorin ryu, my first love in karate was gojuryu, I attribute much of my heavy-handed-ness to it. I still practice several Goju Kata and they are all equally favorite to me and I can never pick just one! There is one dojo here in Hawaii that is really old school Goju from the Seiko Higa lineage, they keep my Goju in check! The Sensei is not only a good friend, he is one of the most awesome Gojuka I have ever seen.

    (1) Yes, it's about what happens in between. Movements are the "flow" between two poles: The start and the end position. So karate moves shouldn't be about the end positions no matter how much brute force is being wasted in getting there. That's why I like your videos so much! But in this case I was more referring to that specific application. I didn't come up with that one. I used the movements in a similar fashion only on limbs which works but you always need a follow up to drop the opponent.

    I was a bit skeptic when I saw a video a friend shared on fb earlier of your student performing the bunkai since she was a bit stiff and lacked the flow, but after seeing your skill and analytical level, I AM IMPRESSED!
    Will share this.

    (2) Though I do also use gedan-barai to twist the opponent like this in another context, I didn't come up with the idea to combine both and use the second hand on the neck. But it works like a breeze! Even too easy because you've got to be very, very careful with your partner (This should be actually a no-brainer!)... So, thanks a lot for your effort and keep up the good work!

  • @eisbombenhagel

    I like this one and have to try it this evening - that's for sure. Good variation of other applications I already knew (actually from other kata) but definitely still following the same principles. Very interesting! You're really doing a good job!

    That young lady has got more heart and control than many who have years on her, nevertheless she is young and has a bright future with so much to learn and grow. I agree I about the PP Freaks, I remember a notable older Okianawan Sensei who is a demolition machine would say - "whole body pressha point, hit hard anywhere, do the job". It's one thing to humbly study a body of knowledge and be good at it- it's another to wrap it around you like a superman cape and try to fly.

  • @shotokankjs
    @shotokankjs 12 лет назад

    I agree. I train only in budo karate. You have a very aiki concept going which I like.
    I was referring to the shuto uke application done by the girl, What I like to see when someone does bunkai is kime with control. Many times you see these pressure point freaks who dont know anything about technique and just tap things and have some sort of cult following.
    Todays generation is what we make of it :)

    Great video! The nukite to the throat is effective, but you can get a stronger gag reflex if you press in to the windpipe from the side. Do this by placing your fingers against the muscle about an inch above the corner of the clavicle and press toward the throat, as if to push the trachea about an inch toward the opposite side. As a bonus, you don't have to worry as much about injuring the trachea itself. Try it out; the results are fun!

    Kara te is not fighting art but self-defense art, as seen in the Bunkai here. Many kids today think all martial arts are 'fighting' arts. They disrespect traditional martial arts' effectiveness by claiming MMA as seen in UFC is the only 'real' martial arts that work in combat. But most of the arts they bash are not 'fighting' arts but unarmed 'self-defense' arts. Trained reactions to unwarranted attack by an aggressor in society. Not meant for competitive sport combat against wary opponent.

  • @Oneminutebunkai
    @Oneminutebunkai  12 лет назад

    It is not hard, it is really a matter of timing. Also lets not assume that all attacks will always be punches and kicks, this is a bad habit we karateka get stuck on. Kata Guruma is specific for certain scenarios and it should not be forced, but when it fits it is a thing of beauty. Picture this-you block and grab his right arm, punch him simultaneously and enter Kata Guruma, nothing hard about this. As along as common sense rules it is all good. PS- love you handle.

    I am a big fan of your mini-bunkai snap-shots. A real help in providing insight into kata applications, as a shotokan practitioner I need all the help I can get! :-)
    The shotokan equivalent for Wanshu is Empi kata, and the application you show in this video appear to be a better fit for the final sequence of doubling pressing blocks with a turning jump at the end of Empi...rather than the signature sequence you demonstrated at the start of the clip...?

  • @Oneminutebunkai
    @Oneminutebunkai  11 лет назад

    Karate (like all these arts) are about being smart, efficient, understanding technique, and not wasting your energy with brute force. Thus you don't fight the human body you go in the way it naturally wants to go to your advantage.

    Thank you. Which one are you referring to? Just curious. Remember that what is important is not the presenter/presentation but the principle. Presentation will vary just like the idea that there is no such thing as an advanced technique, just a basic technique performed really well. What I try to get across is: principle, flow, adaptation, non linearity, and most important "GRIT". Todays generation is too soft and distant, we need to teach them the physicality of Karate. Domo.

    Dear eisbombenhagel,
    When you bring distances back to reality, there are many dangers lurking in the corners-accidents waiting to happen. When you spar like sports from extreme long range you will of course not be exposed to these dangers. Accidental head butting, tripping over your own feet, catching your fingers in a gi, all kinds of stuff you need to be aware of that are potentially very dangerous. I have seen people get broken noses, teeth knocked out, fingers broken, all from accidents.

    continued- Now I will sound like my Sensei when I say today's generation is deluded by thinking that by googling 12 different systems, looking at videos, training here and there for a few months at a time, going to a few seminars, sparring in the garage to compare skills constitutes for claiming they have "EXPERIENCE" in so-and-so. There are no "clean" words I can use in this forum that would clearly say how I feel about this absurdity but let me try this these... %^&$ *&%$• I feel better now!
