What style of Shorin ryu is this?
Something to bear in mind is that almost all Shorin ryu karate is younger than the Karate of Funakoshi.

Both this kata and the previous one show much more grappling technique than most traditional modern forms of karate. Fascinating.
Okinawan styles of Karate are focused on close range engagement, rather than Japanese styles, which have much longer range of engagement. I practice Okinawan Goju-Ryu, and it is all close range as well.
Bassai Dai is almost only grappling and takedowns...
These videos showing the difference between Japanese and Okinawa karate are very good.
Excellent video and series. I've been following your channel for a while now, actually. I am currently a yon kyu/midori obi having just completed Wansu kata in Isshinryu Karate. The organization I belong to just did a seminar on Wansu kata this past Saturday. We went through the history and saw videos of Master Tatsuo Shimabuku performing the kata and our how our kata today compares to the variations of the form from him and those that followed him. We also practiced the kata in sequences and also covered and practiced some of the bunkai.

Hey Sensei, I'm so glad you're doing this series from Okinawa the art I study is from there ( Isshin ryu) that has most of the kata's that are in my style. Isshin ryu is a blend of shorin-ryu an Goju-ryu that Tatsuo Shimabuku Sensei had high ranking belts in each style. When he started his style he took ( what he thought) was the best kata's from both styles. Seisan, Wansu, Chinto an Kusanku an Sanchin. To name some of them. Thanks for your insight on Learning from Okinawa sensei's this is Awesome 😎
Yusuke, season 2 is looking good, can't wait to see more. Sensei was beating you up. All of the katas look familiar to shudokan. We have a few more that I know of.
And THAT Wanshu looks almost as different to Empi as the Shito-Ryu version 😄

Looks very similar to wanshu we practice in wado-ryu :) I’ve tried Empi before and the longer stances made it harder haha
Wado ryu is a breakaway from Shotokan, it's the same kata but taken down a different evolution.

We practice the Wanshu of Shorinji, with some minor variations. I have seen some of the advanced application’s (Bunkai) of the Shotokan version. They appear to be a different solution for the same situation. Which is a interest of mine. The Shotokan has helped me better understand some techniques from the Shorinji version. Enjoy your channel!

The okinawa karara stances are very high, shotokan one evry low....really an advantace ti stay low? I mean lot of shotokan practicers have problem with knees, hips, spinal back bone....should we listen to ancient tecniques and preserve our joint from surgery while learning karate?

And let's not forget that this is not the only version of Wanshu. There is another one that you can find in Matsubayashi Ryu and some other styles too.

What fo you think of visiting a ryu kyu karate( taira shinken) dojo ? Since taira shinken was a early student of funakoshi is pretty cool to see the similarities in the kata, especially in the heians

Hi Yusuke, I am a Shotokan practitioner who has recently had to start in Okinawan Shorin Ryu (Shorinkan). After learning the Shorin Ryu kata Wanshu and having done a bit more online research, I came across a kata called Tomari No Wanshu. While similar, Tomari No Wanshu is actually much closer to the Shotokan Enpi than the Shorin Ryu Wanshu. I do not think that the Shorin/Shorinji version is the kata that Enpi is derived from. Kanazawa mentions in his book Karate: The Complete Kata that Master Funakoshi wrote that Enpi was a Shorei Kata, which is where I am drawing the connection to Tomari No Wanshu.
Is Tomari Wanshu same Wanshu as practiced by Matsubayashi ryu?
I would add that the Shorin and Shorei designations Funakoshi and his students are erroneous. There are no Nahate, i.e. 'Shorei,' kata in Shotokan. The only kata with a possible connection to Nahate might, and I stress might, be Nijushiho, which exists in Ryuei ryu.

The overall kata of Shorinji-ryu is most similar to the Matsubayashi-ryu that I practice, but I can still recognize similarities in Shotokan's Enpi as well. I see some defense against kicks in Enpi that are present in what I practice. The most notable difference from both of these versions is that Wanshu opens with a leg hook rather than a gedan burai.
I'm not familiar with this Kata, but I love that when Sensei is showing moves, you can easily see exactly what the opponent would be doing
I was about to refer to the Seibukan Shorin-ryu version, but he mentioned Shimabukuro Zenpo sensei. Everything has been said :)
You should totally visit Zenpo Shimabukuro Sensei. He is the current head of Seibukan and son of Zenryo Shimabukuro, another student of Kyan. Zenryo sensei and Joen Nakazato are the only mutually acknowledged students of Kyan to have trained under him for a significant amount of time (and that made it alive decades after WWII). Lots of others claim lineage to Kyan, but these are the only two schools that mutually acknowledge each other as Kyan's descendants and that have evidence of being related to Kyan. This would be such a great comparison, because katas are the same, but the details are quite different. Seibukan has a lot more Shikodachi - Zenkutsudachi transitions, among many other differences. This is very interesting to me, because these two Shimabukuro and Nakazato are fellow students... but with different styles. Differente enough to be noticeable. There must be at least one great story there.
Shotokan and Seibukan practitioner here. It seems Funakoshi's original Wanshu must have been derived from the same source as the Matsubayashi version.
When sensei said that "you finish all Shorinji kata going forward", it clicked to me why my first impression was like he's doing very old Goju-ryu kata. Funny though, we have only Gekisai Dai Ichi that's going forward to finish and it's one of the modern creations in 1940s. :)

@@alexd1139 : not necessary, as it depends on which version you do that. Initially it has three steps of sanchin as all crane derivative kata so you don't need to readjust at the end. If you go straight for rokkishu part as Morio Higaonna of IOGKF does, then yes.
@@Burvedys ok thx, I only know one Tensho version, and it's sisters Hakucho and Happoren, but Cranes or birds all over the place. My fafourite 'Crane' Kata is tekki Nidan
@@alexd1139 : not sure if naihanchi is a crane, more likely it's archat i.e. Luohan-quan (Shorin-ryu styles).
@@Burvedys mabe, but Katas and stances and empasises change over time. Naifanchi dachi is like Sanchin on a line. I do see crane or bird movements, e.g. you lift your leg and raise the opposite ellbow,
like a bird standing on one leg and hiding behind a collapsed wing and the the Manji Uke...,
One could do several katas with different animal emphasises, but I think Ape and crane fits best for the Tekkis.

Yusuke, I'm curious what the difference is between Gyaku Neko Ashi Dachi and Kosa Dachi? Or is it a matter of different ways of saying the same thing?
I learned two Okinawan versions of Wanshu (we call these Wansu Shodan/Matsumura and Nidan/Itosu) and also know a version of Empi that is similar to yours. The version performed by the Shorinji Ryu sensei here is like my Wansu Nidan. My Wansu Shodan is much closer to your Enpi. You would recognize it as being directly related. I think there are several versions of Wanshu (being a rather old kata attributed to a Chinese diplomate named Wang in the late 1600's en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanshu ).

Can you explain the stripes on his belt if he is 10th dan?
One stripe = renshi, two stripes = kyoshi, three stripes = hanshi.
