- Here's a look at my build of the new Dart XL Extreme Enhanced version. This time around is also my first time with Arduplane, which I'm really liking already! Some other new good include an excellent little GPS receiver, and a new MIC that works really well. Lots of good things going on with this build! lol Here's some links:

Congrats on the arduplane build! FYI there is now a takeoff mode which eliminates the need for a mission to takeoff. Also the wind indicator on the osd is a pretty cool feature even if you don't have a pitot tube. The arming procedure does a bunch of health checks, so I avoid skipping it as much as possible except on a few planes.
Thanks! I'm glad I've finally got this build underway... lol I've put off Arduplane far too long, I feel like I've been missing out! I definitely want to get more into the advanced things like the wind speed estimate and all that. BTW, what's the little arrow on the OSD next to ground speed? I can't find any info on that at all. It almost seems to act like a slip indicator?
@@bonafidepirate Good question! I think you're right, in Assisted flight it might be slip, and in auto mode it might show how far "off track" you are. I will pay attention to it more next time I fly!.
So excited to see you get into ardupilot. I love it because its proven and effective right from the hobby level all the way up to serious commercial platforms.. the list of cool things you can do with it is insane, from auto soaring to terrain following without lidar and complex missions... great video as always Keith!
Flight Therapy **BullisticFPV** Agree 100%, its like MS Office and other systems are Wordpad. You can do simple things but it also has ocean of features to explore

Btw, since Arduplane 4.0.x they have introduced TAKEOFF Mode which can be set using any switch on your TX. So you don’t have to upload takeoff command in case you had other missions uploaded.
Yeah I read through that a couple times, and will likely move it to another switch to free up AUTO for missions once I get into that. I can probably still leave it as one of my 6 modes on the 6-pos switch really, once I'm done with Autotune I won't need that one again I think.
Arduplane was one of the things that inspired me to get into the RC hobby. Especially long range FPV. That and Eagletree vector. Over 3 years now and never tried Arduplane, only the vector, iNav, and Betaflight lol.
lol I was around when Arduplane was first coming together, I just always had other things on the plate and there were little things I didn't like about Arduplane, always an excuse to go another route... lol I think it's in a good place right now though, probably has been for a long time I just wasn't paying attention... ;) I'll certainly put some time into it though, it has a lot to offer I think!

Finally! How many years have I been nudging you to try ArduPilot? Super...now I have to get you to try a Quad plane...TVBS are my favorites right now VTOL with long range/duration...got to convert one of your wings to it
For sure! It was looong overdue, I feel like me putting it off this long was a dis-service to myself... lol It's good to hear from you, hope all is well! I sent you a message recently in the Slack group, but I don't think anyone every uses it these days... lol I already found the answer to that question though. I may have to try VTOL some day, but I've got a lot of catching up to before I get there.

Great video, a lot of information too. You do a good job of narrating your videos. It was especially interesting to me because I just bought this very same FC from RMRC. I haven't installed yet, still soldering the 2,000 header pins, UGH, lol.
Yep, I guess it's nice that you have the option to install just the pins you want, or direct wiring, but every time I solder up a Matek board I'm convinced that's how they keep the costs down, not having to pay someone to do that... haha

Cool. Looks like a really nice setup. I had my eye on that FC for awhile because it supported Arduplane. I'll be looking to try out that combination hopefully by next summer.

Yeah this little GPS is pretty neat. I was reluctant to pick one up, glad I did though! lol Same story with that little Rush FPV mic. I've had a couple of them here for months now, impulse buy, never got around to using one until now. I really wish they had a 12V option though, would make it so much easier using with the transmitters I typically fly... lol That's crazy Nasa made the same mistake! haha I don't feel so bad now. :p

It's surely high on the list! lol It was actually in the works to fly it with this 405 Wing board and Arduplane a while back, I just never finished that project.

I'm interested to see how you get on with Arduplane...I used it for a while when I started FPV flying, but found it a bit heavy going TBH...The self trimming looks great and so does the tuning...Convinced it will do a better job than iNAV already...
Yeah I'm already liking it more than iNav... lol I like iNav for a lot of reasons, but there's also some things I don't like. One big one is the fact that so many things don't come set up right by default, and everyone needs to change them. Make them the defaults! lol Also, it seems that ever time I install it everything has changed, some old settings are gone, new ones added in, it's a mess and I have to re-learn it all over again. I guess it's good that it's actively being developed, but it's not "finished" enough for me yet. If all I did was focus on iNav and kept up with it I'm sure it would be fine, but it's not something I can just jump back into for a quick build months down the road if I haven't followed along with all the updates... lol
@@bonafidepirate Yeah, I know what you mean. Options on things that should be set in stone. Trying to please everyone..Like Launch Mode default settings...way off..One of my gripes is superfluous Multirotor forms showing up when you have already selected Fixed Wing as the model..so annoyingly obvious...It's typical of Software Engineers though, never see the Elephant in the room.
do you plan to move to 18650 battery packs you can make on your own with genuine brand cells you can rely on ?
It seems to have enough space and my experience as long time user of 18650 in bms controlled environment I want to move.
Our lawn mower had 18650 from Sony Konion and that had run 2440 hours when the capacity went below 50%. That means more than 1500 charges till it reached 50% .. and the Samsung with 3500 mAh are good for 500 charge cycles at 80% ... which impressed me to recognice after 3 years of use or 3 years with 9 months of use each year.

Nope, never used it apart from the old RTF quad that came with it on a really old APM clone. I never did anymore than fly that thing though... lol
I have this wing on the way and have to say the build in 6 pin plugs were not thought out very well, on receiver side if you want telemetry back it takes rx,tx,volt and ground so with 3 pins its short one pin, same thing with vtx short one pin. So in your case how did you deal with vtx wiring? Thanks for all your videos
So are you planning on doing a video on the Ardupilot setup? A basic video just to get the plane flying?
Maybe at some point, but I'm just getting started learning my way through it now... lol I'm in no position to make an instructional video. I'd suggest reading through all the documentation, but especially this page which gives a quick rundown on a basic configuration to get going with FPV. It references other pages too, but I found it helped to go over all the documents there before diving in. ardupilot.org/plane/docs/fpv-plane.html
Try the 765 in your Skyhunter or the Binary.
You don't need weight in the end of the wing for balance. The arduplane will to its thing you will not notice the difference. But only applies to FBWA and auto. I have 600mm wing with huge wings imbalance and ardupilot. heavy gps in one wing and nothing on the other. Flies perfect. But maybe it is noticeable in manual.
It's always a good idea to build a straight, true, balanced airplane before putting the autopilot to work. The AP can mask the issue, but having enough trim to counter a lateral imbalance is not efficient. Carrying a bit more weight is a lot less of a hit on efficiency. Besides, having that much trim in a wing will alter the airfoil enough that one wing will likely stall before the other even in a straight and level stall, resulting in some nasty spin habbits. ;) As I said, it's an issue that's overlooked far too often.
Put it in the mini talon. Also there is a mini talon v2 coming out for pre-order in the next couple of weeks you should get one of those
Isn't the V2 kind of pricey? I haven't paid it a lot of attention really, but that's what I remember about it when I did look... lol I still have the old V1 airframe collecting dust, could be the perfect platform really.
@@bonafidepirate get the dust off it would be a perfect airframe and if it's the f765 wing then you can utilize the dual camera function. And the price of the v2 will be $48usd plus shipping.

hi keith which version of mp and ardupilot are you using as i set mine up everything works but getting on hud gps;no gps?
i have it connected to serial 3 and plugged in correct way but still no gps.the gps is working as be tested on another plane.

Thanks for very instructive and entertaining videos! There may be one more point of interest here: If you combine 1.2 and crossfire, could you possibly shed some light on the issues and the workarounds at some later date? We understand notch filters are required, but there is a lot of confusion as to where to put them. Specifically, if a repeater VRX setup ensures generous distance between Tx module and video receiver, will there still be issues?
I'm using the notch filters, but haven't flown without them so I can't say if they are absolutely necessary with my setup or not. The filters fit onto your video receiver, then the antenna onto the filter. They are there just to stop anything within a given range of frequencies from coming into the receiver. They are tuned to the same frequency range the Crossfire transmits on. They still allow anything above or below that range into the receiver like normal.
@@bonafidepirate Thanks a lot! That was very clarifying. I was afraid the Vtx could confuse the Crossfire Rx as well, but if the video receiver is the main issue, I expect a notch filter and my ground station with a 5.8 GHz repeater is all I need to advance from medium to long range. Thanks again!
6-pin connector among which 3 are for the servo.. leaving only 3 pins for VTX or RX..
yep, you can always common up the ground and 5v to get pins for VTX UART etc. :-)

I also moved to Crossfire from EZUHF. I wanted telemetry but also use the nano rx's for my quads. I've recently been flying 5" freestyle and also have a 7" for long range cinematic stuff. But I'll use the full size receiver in larger wings and planes. So far love crossfire!
It’s too bad they can’t do cruise throttle like Eagle Tree Vector where you can just move your sticks instead of having to do a percentage and have to use the computer. Same as altitude hold and use elevator instead of just increasing throttle to gain height.
My vote is the Binary or even Skyhunter with an airspeed sensor, but I will like whatever you pick. We all knew you would like Arduwhatever. You might re-visit Li-ion flight packs via diy individual cells. They have come a long way since the Titan packs that I still use in my < 30 amp planes. Those were over stressed, very warm, in my Ranger 2000 3536 1400. But I now run the efficient SS 2216-7 1250kv in everything. Two in the now overpowered Bixler twin. I only use Li-ion except in my well worn and favorite Radian motorglider. I solder them up with silicone jumper wires and balance leads without protection circuits. Still sticking with FrSky R9 except I grabbed up a couple Jumper R8 ch rcvrs on 2.4g because of good range and Ardupilot Telemetry needs no converter , just plugs into a Uart. How do you mount the flight controller into the fuselage? Double sided tape or hot glue or something else?
Usually I mount them with double sided tape, I like the gray one from 3M. For this one, I used some 3D printed "clips" that allow you to screw it down to the wood plate in the bottom of the fuse, Andrew Newton has those posted on Thingiverse - www.thingiverse.com/thing:4154620
So when running crossfire, do you have to run it in sbus mode or can you wire it to a uart Rx and Tx like normal and use crossfire protocol?
Ardupilot does accept CRSF protocol on a UART, so you could go with that. I'm not sure when it was added, but I believe it's relatively recent. I don't know what the benefit would be over sbus though, as far as I know you still need mavlink for telemetry. That said, I have next to no experience using Crossfire with Ardupilot and I'm probably wrong about at least a few things when it comes to that... lol I've only paired them up once, in this plane, and used sbus to keep it simple. All my other time spend with Arduplane has been with Dragonlink.
@@bonafidepirate I'm going to use inav, can't decide to use TBS CF or Express Lrs, they both use uninverted uarts. Isn't sbus a slower protocol? Just out of curiosity what's the fastest packet rate on 900 MHz Dragon link?

Hi, does arduplane provide more flight stability than inav, or are they the same. inav is quite touchy to wind even when you reduce the lpf cutoff frequency.
To me it seems to fly better, but keep in mind I've only used autotune on each, never manually tuned either. I've only flown Arduplane for the two flights you see in this video, and only in this airframe. Maybe I just got lucky and it works well in this setup? lol (It's been around more than a decade now though, and well matured, plenty of people swear by it) You'd be better asking someone with more experience with both for a more accurate comparison.

@@bonafidepirate I have a few matek f405 wing boards. I have tried inav and arduplane. inav is easier to setup, but arduplane is the clear winner when it comes to flight performance. I recently got my phoenix 2400 to fly for 7 hours and 22 minutes using batter only.
The Multistar batteries are yet another product HK has discontinued.
Yep, it was a sad day... lol The Multistar I have is one of the older first ones they had, it was a the 10C 4S1P pack. They later changed to a 12C 4S2P pack, then canceled them under the Multistar brand. They popped up shortly after branded as Turnigy, that's the blue packs I have now, but I like the 10C packs better.
What’ the difference between FBWA and CRUISE mode?
CRUISE maintains altitude and heading, FBWA does neither; also throttle / speed control works in a slightly different way in CRUISE mode. It's all explained in the video.
FBWA is like angle mode with manual throttle. Cruise is alt. hold and heading hold.

I still have all my DL gear, it's still king I think... lol I'm just having fun with Crossfire for a change of pace right now, and enjoying the tiny low cost receivers too.
Me to,dragonlink is best.i had a defect on my dr receiver.blinkt red an had to order a new one.still have it,is there a way to fix it?manual says chip fault
About the only think I could think of is maybe flashing the firmware again. Will it connect to the PC via USB? If not, contact Mike @ Dragonlink, his support isn't always lightning fast, but always good and he'll get you sorted out.
