    Keith, you took off with a bad AHRS/EKF warning and latter, high VIBS until throttle was reduced...might check that....and since you dont have a compass, the yaw axis is not initialized until you get good GPS heading info at some speed....the 90 roll was because you threw it with a lot of nose up pitch...it recovered quickly, got good EKF and set the takeoff heading and loiter point off to the right of where you expected it....

    • @allisterschreiber9920
      @allisterschreiber9920 4 года назад

      Yup, you beat me to it. A compass on the builds will keep it pointed in the right direction for take off. I know the Ardupilot docs say you don’t need one for Arduplane but if you’re hand launching in auto take-off it sure helps to make it less exciting.
      Check your prop balance. I ran into the same vibe issue on a wing this year and it ended up ripping my motor off mid flight. I know they say 30m/s/s is okay, but really it’s way too high for a wing. I was about 20 (lower than the warning threshold) prior to the failure.

    • @ATXHELI
      @ATXHELI 4 года назад +1

      @@allisterschreiber9920 However, if you are using master (aka "latest") , there is a very good fallback if no compass is attached (or it fails) called GSF (Guassian Sum Filter) that can provide excellent yaw heading outputs....once initialized....not enough experiments have been done to tell if just trotting around in a circle on the ground with the plane before launch is enough to align the yaw (you will get a message "yaw aligned" or "using gps" when it does) to give enough gps velocity/position estimates to enable the GSF...but with copters taking off and loitering, it will drift a few meters then lock in and align and you can actually fly without compass now...I recently added a wiki page for it as an upcoming feature (one that is in master only, not stable yet)... ardupilot.org/plane/docs/common-compassless.html

    Epic M8...lol...Best yet review with a Maiden and Ardu... Today you were Mr Cool on steroids...The overview of MP was interesting, but I missed the full screen FPV video feed...Looks like a great wing, my only gripe would be that you are expected to drop a big GoPro in it to get CG...even with a big 5200mah Lipo...Had to smile as you nearly hit the tree, well held tho....lol.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, a slightly longer nose wouldn't be a bad thing I think, room to slide the battery up a bit. I guess you could make the best of it and stuff more battery in there... lol 4S2P 18650s should be lighter than the 5200 I'm using, so maybe even worse for CG. Maybe a 10000 pack will fit? Crazy long flights then! lol

    • @EnglishTurbines
      @EnglishTurbines 4 года назад +1

      @@bonafidepirate Yes, exactly..the Lipo Bay should extend into the nose, so if needed you can choose not to mount a GoPro and fit the lipo 90 degrees to where it is now...Otherwise your forced into a heavy setup with no choice. That said, it looks like it has more wing area than the original?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  4 года назад +1

      I want to do a bit more tweaking and tuning to get it dialed in more, but it's close. CG seems like a good place to start, slightly nose heavy but not bad at all. You could maybe get away with moving it back a little but I'll probably leave it where it's at for some pitch stability.

  • @bmo525i
    @bmo525i 4 года назад +1

    Great Flight! Was wondering how you are powering your dragonlink? Are you using the 5v off the servo rail? Also for telemetry did you use rx/tx2? I had issues with my DLink on the F405 until I moved to over to rx/tx2 and used rx/tx5 for gps.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  4 года назад +1

      There was some recent talk about powering receivers off the Matek boards in the Dragonlink thread. It's important to note that the "4V5" rail, including the pin next to the SBUS input pin is limited to about 500mA. I wasn't even aware of that until a few days ago... lol That said, since I'm using the standard micro RX (25mW telemetry) and not running any servos off the receiver, I'm OK powering on that 4.5V rail. With the higher power output receivers, or if you're running any servos directly off the DL receiver like for pan/tilt etc. you should power it off the servo rail instead. I'll be doing that once I'm able to use the 1000mW receiver. Telemetry is set up by default on UART1 with the AP firmware for F405-Wing. Of course you can move it to whatever UART you want, but I've connected it to UART1 and it works fine. My GPS is on the default, UART3.

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  3 года назад

      I don't have one installed (yet). The airspeed shown on the OSD is purely an estimate by the FC. (set the ARSPD_TYPE to 0) I did just get some digital sensors from Qiotek though, one of them will most likely make it's way into this plane.

      Not enough to matter at this frequency. (1.28GHz) If I'm putting in about 800mW, I'll get about 600 to the antenna if I remember the math right. I might lose a mile or so off the max range, but when we're talking double digits theoretical max, I won't notice. ;)

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  4 года назад

      Right, I'm liking the numbers we're seeing with this one. The fact that it will carry a big battery while cruising reasonably fast at low amp draw opens the door for some super long range setups using lithium ion cells. I think a 4S 3P pack of 18650s is going to be the sweet spot. I've got a pack on the way, slow boat from China though so who knows when I'll get to try it out... lol I know a couple of others are already gearing up to try that configuration.

      I don't have an actual airspeed sensor, but Ardupilot is able to calculate airspeed based on other sensors available, and does a fairly good job of it. They call it "synthetic" airspeed, and I have it set up using that.

    Hi your vtx antenna extension is longer than usual. Doesn’t the extra length degrade the signal out strength?
    I always wanted to install the 1.3ghz vtx closer to the center and antenna at the wing tip but didn’t do it because of this assumption.
    Thank you

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  4 года назад +1

      I'm using standard RG174 coax. I don't have a way to measure the actual loss, but theory says I should be losing about 100mW over 1ft of cable, about 0.6db loss. I should have way more range with the 800mW vTX than I need, so a bit of loss shouldn't hurt. If the calculator at maxmyrange is correct, even dropping off 200mW of power I'd only lose about 1 mile of range (from about 13 theoretical max). Of course this is all just theoretical, and I have no way to accurately measure any of it... lol basically, yeah you'll lose some power in the cable, but it's likely not enough to matter for what I'm doing.

    Awesome flight! How would you compare this wing to the Dart XL Enhanced version?

    • @bonafidepirate
      @bonafidepirate  4 года назад +2

      It's hard to say at this point, what you see here in this video is 100% of the flight time I have on this new wing... lol So far though, my impression is that this one is faster for the same amount of power going in, thus more efficient. It seems to fly every bit as smooth so far, but again this is all I've flown it, and it wasn't terribly rough that day. I may still be speaking of the sketchy launch, but to me the Dart XL is easier to launch since it has a "fuselage" of sorts that gives a place to grab it and launch it overhead like a normal airplane. That said, I've never been very good and launching wings, I'll get the hang of this one with some practice... lol I think the Dart XL may be a little more on the forgiving side, either one will be a nice platform though in my opinion.
