We all counted the strings on the bass in the thumbnail lol
Dan LaBrecque I see I’m not the only one
Shit
This was a pleasant surprise. Raven is definitely one of the most underrated bands of the NWOBHM. Glad they're getting some respect from you guys.
They are super underrated. They fucking rule!
Love to see John Gallagher..Truly one talented musician and a very down to earth human being..Thank you for all the music brother..Been a Raven fan since 81’
All of us Geordies are friendly down to earth people.
This guy is wicked! I’d never heard Raven until this video, now checking out some of their stuff. So good! Thanks Loudwire!
Get the first three albums
Get the first two.
Even the guitar player is wicked on the guitar.
Raven back in their early days had everything they needed to be a success. Fast speed, thrashing riffs, and cheesy ass lyrics. But when they signed up with Atlantic Records, they were asked to change their style both physically and musically to resemble hair metal like Poison, they lost whatever momentum they had and it was all downhill from there. Their first 4 albums were their best work.
And then 34 years ago they went back to what they do best and have been doing it ever since... you just may want to listen to one of those albums!!! Especially the new one!
One of the best Metal bass players of all time. One of my Bass Heroes and also a total gentleman because I got to know him and open for Raven when they played in Puerto Rico. My favorite song "On The Wings Of An Eagle" starts with a bass intro that is nothing but extraordinary and beautiful. John Gallagher for me is a living legend!!!
JG raised the bass playing bar in metal in the 1980s. He was ahead of his time and put the bass in the forefront of music, not just supporting rhythm section as most did in that era. Met him in NYC opening for Accept in 2015.... Have his pic over my desk in my office.
I remember getting into Raven in the mid 80`s. Everyone I knew back then thought either Cliff Burton or Steve Harris was like the end all metal bass god, but John is one baddass on the bass who in my opinion blew all the other bassists out of the water back then.
Steve Harris is the GOAT
@@rohantiwari7801 As much as I thought how cool Steves bass lines sounded back in the day. He never did anything on the instrument that was anywhere near as impressive or as technical as Johns playing is. It was the standard Maiden gallop and that was his signature style and it worked for them. I`ve never seen Steve tap or do a solo that was anything like what John can do. As a matter of fact, I never seen Steve showcase any other abilities on the bass besides what he plays in the songs.
@@hammerhorde
I agree with you, Steve harries has his signature galop, which hé use alot, but Its not like his playstyle is uniqe, he is good yes but listen to a few maiden albums after eachothers or learn them on the bas like I have and you Will find out that it is almost more or less always the same thing hé does.
"Cliff Burton?.... Never heard of her."
- Raven
*His way of talking & attitude reminds me of maestro Batio a lot*
ah I was a HUGE Raven fan in the 80s. this reminds me I need to pull out some of those cassettes and jam them out again. monster bassist. much respect.
A Fan since 1986. Oh man, this band really made an influence. Run silent, run deep. All I need.
Raven is criminally underrated
You are king! Always loved Raven
shots fired at slap bass. LOL.
Saw Raven and Diamond Head live with my metal brother like in 2015 at a warehouse in Los Angeles CA they kicked ass! 😎🤘🏽
I bought the first album All For One in 1983 on vinyl and played the crap out of it.By the years end all of my metal head friends and brother had it too lol. Been a fan ever since. Such an underappreciated and innovative band.
They had two albums before All For One.
Rock Until You Drop and Wiped Out, those albums are absolutely brilliant.
I was wondering what happened to them and then this came up in my Twitter feed it's good to see John Gallagher Raven is a hell of a talented band
This guy is a breath of fresh air.
Love this band, John was a huge influence for me start to playing bass.
John is an amazing player. Raven played a club with Diamond Head in my area 5 years ago and I didn’t find out until after the show happened. I regret missing that. Great band, All For One is especially a classic but they have a lot of good albums.
I have to maybe think the one dislike was an accident...either that or Gene Simmons.
@psycho'si carter I'm a bass player... Not a very good one... But his work on Kiss albums in the 70s is gold. Then he started making movies and Paul, Bruce, or a session guy did all the bass. Rick Nielsen from Cheap Trick once said Gene Simmons made a fortune playing the open E and A. Hahaha
And Gene says "thanks for the free publicity Bill , whoever the fuck you are !!"
Gene invented the bass, the speaker cabinet and the music business.
Remember listening to these guys the 80s still got a couple of their albums!!!...🤙😎🤘... Crash Bang Wallop
Holy shit this guy is just vibing thats fucking nuts.... hes just sitting there... vibing!!!! Thats CraaaaaAaaazy.
As a drummer this is the guy you want to jam with. Smiling ear to ear😉
I only just found out about this guy when I was looking up Flying V and Explorer Basses, how come I never heard of him before? He has got serious skill.
Been listening to Raven for a few decades now and never really noticed he was this good. Bass is usually the last thing I pay attention to
Very underrated bassist and Raven an under appreciated band
He's awesome...I'm still pissed I missed their show in my little town....heard it was epic!!!
the right hand technique !! now that's metal bass playing . wey aye man !! athletic rock !! fookin' legend
Love your video and it's great to see him just talking and playing
Saw them live many times - and they are better than ever. Super nice guys also. And still putting out killer music.
Either I never noticed or forgot--he really is a darn good player. Time to get those Raven discs out!
Great bass player, great band. Have a signed copy of Rock Until You Drop I bought in ‘82. Still one of my favorite albums!
I'm not sure if i'm blind or not but I only count four strings and i'm wildly perturbed.
I assure you one of the basses is! Check it out around 5.40 and you can hear it
John still rips.
their new album is sick! Pretty well done
These guys made brutal music. I had no idea they were so precise.
I remember seeing On And On on U68. Good tune. Got a kick outta the drummer in the hockey helmet.
Live at the Inferno, The Devil's Carrion, All for One....I might even have the vinyl kicking around still.
Awesome stuff.
I wish I had an 1/8th of his bass talent
Go see them if you ever can, they're really great live, and bring earplugs because they're really loud also.
Amen brother
I don't care who you are, or who your favorite bassist is. John Gallagher is a freaking GENIUS!! This guy has rewritten the school of bass on numerous levels!
The master of Speed Metal!!!! Hail!
slade wow and king crimson thats why the proggy feelin that wiped out has
Is that strung like a 12 string were they are doubled up?
Each string doubled with one an octave higher.
Yep. He also uses an outrageous 12 string bass (4x3) and a standard 4 strings with a floating tremolo
John is kinda crazy (and I love him for dat)
Great bassist
Greetings my fellow man from Newcastle :)
Can canny kidda!
John is an amazing bassist. 1st time I heard IGARBO I flipped. Being a bassist myself I became a big fan of raven and John's playing. He still continues to amaze.
Still the greatest all time metal bassist!

Why not? My name... article is about me... if I wanna set the guy straight I will!
I had an English professor who looked a lot like John does now and she was cool lol
Maith thú Seán!
Thats some really powerful stuff!
Nice, a gaelic speaker. Mantain that language alive.
@@dannysoler05 níl fadhb!
Right on Brother 🤘🐍🤘
Wow
ジョンギャラガー大好き!
Hey John. Sounds great! What’s your signal chain here? Also, how did you make the bridge work for 8 strings? Thanks!
Hi! Signal chain on this is a Boss GT-1 into a jam box mini speaker!
Works fine for doing this! The eight string Iceman .. well I used a Schaller 8 string bass bridge .. blocked off the original tuner holes and repositioned / calculated the new 8 tuner holes and re cut the nut!
He's good, isn't he?
🤘
Hi. Whats the brand of the bass and strings that John was using? Thanks
Wassup
🤘😷🤘
Man listening to an awesome bass player makes you hate them all a little less, jk
Shitting on bass player= funny. true

Raven have so much potential to do something really creative but end up just doing the wannabe Motörhead thing EVERY time 😂 ✌️
How was Raven ever wannabe Motorhead lol LOL them both but they are completely different. Other than they're three pieces that play fast I guess.
No one like this video, it’s at 666
Dying Fetus?
No... Raven!!! Read the title!!!!
John Gallagher no shit sherlock
That's a funny looking 8-string...
It’s a converted Ibanez Iceman that I made during the lockdown!
