Great review! I own the 2021 M440i convertible and LOVE IT (Gray exterior, Red interior). I test drove both the S5 and M440i and prefer the M (that's why I bought it :-) You are right it is SO quiet with top up or down. With the back air deflector up it is incredible how little wind blows in the cabin. 2 things you missed on the review. The M has heated headrests, and the design of the M, the angle of the headlights matches the angle of the interior air vents and door handles. It looks amazing, compared to the S5. Anyway, great job and looking forward to your next reviews (Thomas pick the M!)
Great review ;-) Personally, I have an S5 since couple of months and I prefer that heads down to BMW. First, I was driving a 540i about 15 years ago where the engine just fell apart @ 60K miles 5 years down the road. I have 2 horror stories of guys driving M3s and engines just doing roughly the same in last 10 years. Though I admit I drove the first 3.0i Z3s muscleback gokart around 2001 for 2 years and goodness, this was an insanely fun car to drive (before kids ;-) AFAIS BMW gets the extra horses now by simply overcooking the engines and weasles out the warranty when they broil. Also, BMW service used to be some of the best but Audi leaves them in the dust now (at least locally). S5 four real seats, great trunk, superb handling and sleek integrated technology (lights, cruise with integrated speed sign reading, superb heads up, 20 speakers bose and so on and so on is all superbly meshed and easy to use [though I don't like the big touch sticking out in the middle too much]) just got me. Plus, in comfort it's really a sedan and flipped to S you got a really, really decent (geared to older man's needs like heated massage seats ;-) sporty cabrio. the beamer may have the overcooked inline engine but goodness, the v6 in the audi already can scare you witless when you dare to push it in sports a bit and I'm used to go around in 350hp boats ;-) And let's not forget, I got completely sold on the quattro, I drove a passat with 4 motion for 2-3 years and the 4 wheel technology audi has is simply like going on rails compared to any of the bmw stuff. And yes, the porsches with full 4 wheel distribution are even better but then you're looking at racing and not everyday car and another 50% min pop in price point.
What an excellent review! Both are amazing cars, and the "decision" would come down to the nuanced personal preference and need that you describe. No use disparaging one against the other, and you nailed the salient comparative points. For me, A5. But I've loved BMW M too. Depends too maybe on where you are in your car journey.
Thanks Thomas for reminding me why I became a car guy, namely the emotions of joy, passion and exhilaration. I was thinking about getting into an EV but driving pleasure is so important still.
I looked at the A5, E450, and M440i cabrios and chose the BMW. Not least because, where I live in the States, I was faced with long (and uncertain) wait times for the Audi and the Mercedes, whereas a new M440i in Dravit Grey happened to come off the delivery truck the day I was at the BMW dealer to inquire/test drive. In three months I've put 5500 miles on the M440i, mostly due to two long road trips, with a combination of highway, rural, and spirited driving (including the infamous "Tail of the Dragon" in Tennessee/North Carolina), and I must say that I'm VERY happy with my choice. As is my wife, who has ridden as a passenger for nearly all of those miles. I'm sure I would have been happy with either the Audi or the Mercedes, as both are terrific cars, but I think the BMW is turning out to be the best fit for me. If only the steering was as good as the steering in the Audi (or my brother's Porsche 718...)
Great review! I had the same choices, did a BMW auto cross in the M440i coupe, so ordered and had an M440i xDrive on order for Oct delivery, when I found a great deal on a Boxster S. Cancelled the M440i, but if I decide I want a backseat and sell my ‘07 E93, the M440i x is what I’d re-order. Saw your 718 comment and had to post, hard to beat that handling.
Great review, but pick one at the end!! I'm a hard core convertible girl and have owned both BMW and Audi convertibles. The BMW seems more refined and suited for the older/leisure consumer, while the Audi seems younger, brash, and impatient to get out there and GO! I love the exhaust tuning of the BMW better - it's that low, throaty, sexy purr. Audi's exhaust is again, less refined. BMW used to be a 'true driver's car', but decided to change to the 'old person Sunday driver's' car. The Audi is the choice for those who truly love to drive. Driving with the top down should still ruffle your hair, windscreen or not. We're back to the 'Sunday drivers' v. the driver who has top-down driving in their blood. The interiors are a mixed bag...I think you could make different choices to evoke the feeling *you* need from either car. I personally detest quilting and am not into the brushed stainless/carbon fiber look. I love beautiful wood trim in a car! I would also stick with leather seating, because, if you actually *use* the ragtop, you know how filthy seats can get (I don't want sweat soaked fabric seats!). In my experience (if you tend to purchase and keep your vehicles), the Audi has better long-term integrity (in terms of maintenence and repair costs) than the BMW. Something that's a big negative for the Audi is that Audi's back window tends to detatch from the top after some years and the only way to fix it is to put on a new top (totally stupid when the top is still in great condition!) I am unaware if this is a BMW issue. Lastly, I'm VERY disappointed in options for convertible tops from all manufacturers. I LOVE my chosen color with a TAN top! I do not want black!!! When I get my next car, I'll have to order through a custom program to get what I want (which sucks!) One last thing... How can you NOT love those evil powerful 'eyes' (headlights) on the Audi??? If anything says "c'mon, try me..." like those eyes, I've never seen it. For the car chicks out there, Fendi makes a handbag that TOTALLY goes with the Audi - The Fendi Peekaboo Monster (www.pinterest.com/amp/pin/31384528631741220/) Just wanted to throw my female/loves to drive/convertibles in my blood opinions in the mix! 🚘

Thomas I took delivery of my 440I convertible in May this year and its such a lovely car to drive I look forward to driving it every time I get into it! its a super car to own so far and I get so many positive comments (its the black with the red interior and red break callipers) same spec as you outlined in your video.

Audi S5 . No doubt, but I'm a big fan of Audis. I like the front grill better on the Audi and the fact that not so much lag room in the back of the BMW. The interior looks better on the Audi for me , and the gauges are better on the Audi . But that's my vote. Thanks for the video Thomas, great job.
I also think audi looks better than the bimmer, specially inside, it's the merc that I think kills audi but bimmers, feels cheap! The only thing that I like with bimmer, is the seat colors, very nice, audi honestly likes black.
Great review as always my personal opinion BMW at the moment is miles ahead of Audi and that all changed when the F90 xdrive arrived and gate crashed the Audi party. Even the interiors BMW are putting out now are hands down more luxurious than Audi. It's a case of its BMW time atm but no doubt Audi will be back on top one day. 😎
if you dont have an audi, that is. My 2021 q5 sline which has same steering, is shite. too thin. My F30 msports steering is thick and chunking. very good to grip and better than the Audi
Test drove a 2022 S5 cab this afternoon, and one thing I didn’t like was the steering wheel. Too thin and plasticy feeling, and the shift paddles too felt very thin and cheap. I’m a BMW guy, and loved a lot about the S5, but the steering wheel (which you’re holding 100% of the time you’re driving so is kinda important) was a letdown.

I bought an S5 cabriolet in 2018 very much because of Thomas' original review! Best car I've ever had and still huge fun on every drive. I'd be tempted with another until they make a nice electric convertible but sadly it's not been sold here in the UK for almost 3 years now :-( I'll be keeping mine for a few more years then.
Driving both, I can say the M440i is way more powerful but lacks the handling and ride balance of the S5. The audi is definetely a better daily driver. I drive a (rare) C 400 4matic cabriolet.
Solely based on the increased reliability of the Audi A5 vs the Audi S5, I chose the A5. 0-60 in the A5 is 5.0sec vs 4.3 in the 3.0v6 S5. I bought for overall daily driving, top down, reliable, sporty but luxury fun.
Simple soluzione: Buy both!! Awesome to have back to back comparison in this video. Bavarian one for me...next to the Audi grill, the 4series' doesn't look so big!
I plan on getting the M440i. I prefer every aspect of the looks over the S5. The front, the back and the profile all look better imo as well as the interior. I need to drive the S5 so see how it feels, but on looks alone I prefer the BMW.
I just *love* the new BMW 4 series. 💯 The larger upright grille gives it a very aggressive, yet Modern look. And I've never understood why people don't say the same about the Audi's grille - but that it's one looks old, dated and slopey. No different to their cars from 2006. In real life, the BMW's is perfectly sized. People just were too easily brainwashed by rough opinions on the internet!
Fabulous content as always. I had an S5 cabrio for 6 years, the longest I have ever kept a car and I still regret selling it as it just did everything so well, it was even practical. I traded it in early and ordered a new one back in 2018 but they stopped selling them in the UK which is so frustrating so it has to be the BMW for me.
@@RO-cf3lz I ended up not replacing it. Funnily enough I am now looking at used S5’s again, @ circa £25k less than they were new, they look like great value now but only available in 2017 and 2018 in the UK so not that many around.
Omg i have never enjoyed a ride so much (even though it is virtual). So so good job and those cars.. speechless, love them, want them. PS: The S5 is my choice imagine optioning it better with white leather as well Bang & Olufsen head-up and i can't say no to the quad exhausts oo-‐------oo
I grimaced when I saw that. The whole dash on that Audi looks look similar to a 2010 toyota with an aftermarket GPS system installed. I don't think I could past that....
I've got the A5 Cabriolet 3.0 V6 TDI and wouldn't swap it for anything. Miner's an older model with the MMI Rotary Touch which I think I would miss in that S5. Would also miss the head up display. If anything, this video makes me want to drive to Germany just so I can drive up that mountain road! 😂
I love BMWs and I have had three (E30, E36 and E46) over a period of 20 years, but in recent years I think that especially the small BMWs have become too big and heavy (not to mention front-wheel drive for 1- series). In this case, I would definitely have considered the Audi, but then it's the engine in the BMW. Few engines today are better than the B58 in-line six and this has probably always been the case with BMW. The engines in a BMW have, with few exceptions, been fantastic constructions (at least here in Europe). They are relative to displacement powerful and perform really impressive (even for the regular models such as the 320i). The gearbox and dynamic driving characteristics are other BMW specialties that make a BMW a fantastic driving machine.

BMW really should have gone the opposite direction with their grilles, especially since they probably don't need such a large intake. They had the courage to do it with the e41.

I want a convertible as my next vehicle in the next 6 months. Which BMW would you recommend- the 8 series, 4 series or Z4. I currently have the X5 and really enjoy all the features.
I had an SQ5 prior to my present X5. I felt the BMW was superior in fit and finish - maybe because the SQ5 was built in Mexico. My heart makes me lean toward the BMW 😊.
I have a 2021 M440i coupe and much prefer it over the S5 coupe. The BMW just has more character and the engine in my opinion is more responsive and it handles great.
B58 engine with the ZF transmission make a too good combo to not take them into consideration! Exterior colour and interior can be vastly customised so I don't see a possible high difference here 🤔 M440i is much more fun driven with the top down ✌
I liked the rant about the disaster in the car industry. Soon they'll put a touch screen tv in there. Im 28 but I love the "old school" driving style and cars, I have a 14 yo alfa. Go in, start it up and drive, dont need 57 drive modes or something. Also, I hope to own a v8 someday, EVs feel like toys, not cars.
Don't think the 440 looks very good in a cabrio, it's sort of stubby each end even though it's longer, it's the Audi that is sleeker and has a better integrated design. Where the beemer is better is the interior colour choices are more extensive. The options lists are cut down too much with Audi under the pretext of Euro rules. Change a couple of options on the interior and black optics it would look even better but the Audi wins it anyway, its just a better looking car.

My preference is almost always VW/Audi over BMW from a design point of view. The vehicles just fit my personality best.

Driving both, I can say the M440i is way more powerful but lacks the handling and ride balance of the S5. The audi is definetely a better daily driver.
I drive a (rare) C 400 4matic cabriolet.
The sharp style and drivability of the audi for me.
It’s a chic Boss suite on wheels.
Solely based on the increased reliability of the Audi A5 vs the Audi S5, I chose the A5. 0-60 in the A5 is 5.0sec vs 4.3 in the 3.0v6 S5. I bought for overall daily driving, top down, reliable, sporty but luxury fun.

Bavarian one for me...next to the Audi grill, the 4series' doesn't look so big!
I plan on getting the M440i. I prefer every aspect of the looks over the S5. The front, the back and the profile all look better imo as well as the interior. I need to drive the S5 so see how it feels, but on looks alone I prefer the BMW.
Seating Comfort is better on the S5 imho!
Gotta get Alcantara s5 seat though

I just *love* the new BMW 4 series. 💯
The larger upright grille gives it a very aggressive, yet Modern look. And I've never understood why people don't say the same about the Audi's grille - but that it's one looks old, dated and slopey. No different to their cars from 2006.
In real life, the BMW's is perfectly sized. People just were too easily brainwashed by rough opinions on the internet!

Thomas, you never or rather rarely speak of brake feel. That's a major part of the driving experience, also the seat supportiveness is never mentioned
Fabulous content as always. I had an S5 cabrio for 6 years, the longest I have ever kept a car and I still regret selling it as it just did everything so well, it was even practical. I traded it in early and ordered a new one back in 2018 but they stopped selling them in the UK which is so frustrating so it has to be the BMW for me.
So what was the final end verdict?
@@RO-cf3lz I ended up not replacing it. Funnily enough I am now looking at used S5’s again, @ circa £25k less than they were new, they look like great value now but only available in 2017 and 2018 in the UK so not that many around.

Omg i have never enjoyed a ride so much (even though it is virtual). So so good job and those cars.. speechless, love them, want them.
PS: The S5 is my choice imagine optioning it better with white leather as well Bang & Olufsen head-up and i can't say no to the quad exhausts oo-‐------oo

I grimaced when I saw that. The whole dash on that Audi looks look similar to a 2010 toyota with an aftermarket GPS system installed. I don't think I could past that....

The Audi is technically great but there is just something intrinsically special about a BMW in-line six… excellent review Thomas.
I've got the A5 Cabriolet 3.0 V6 TDI and wouldn't swap it for anything. Miner's an older model with the MMI Rotary Touch which I think I would miss in that S5. Would also miss the head up display.
If anything, this video makes me want to drive to Germany just so I can drive up that mountain road! 😂

I love BMWs and I have had three (E30, E36 and E46) over a period of 20 years, but in recent years I think that especially the small BMWs have become too big and heavy (not to mention front-wheel drive for 1- series). In this case, I would definitely have considered the Audi, but then it's the engine in the BMW. Few engines today are better than the B58 in-line six and this has probably always been the case with BMW. The engines in a BMW have, with few exceptions, been fantastic constructions (at least here in Europe). They are relative to displacement powerful and perform really impressive (even for the regular models such as the 320i). The gearbox and dynamic driving characteristics are other BMW specialties that make a BMW a fantastic driving machine.

BMW really should have gone the opposite direction with their grilles, especially since they probably don't need such a large intake. They had the courage to do it with the e41.

I think it would totally make sense to have cooled / ventilated seats in convertibles for better climate comfort.

Question: I am more concerned with comfort over performance although I also really appreciate performance. I want a convertible as my next vehicle in the next 6 months. Which BMW would you recommend- the 8 series, 4 series or Z4. I currently have the X5 and really enjoy all the features.

I had an SQ5 prior to my present X5. I felt the BMW was superior in fit and finish - maybe because the SQ5 was built in Mexico. My heart makes me lean toward the BMW 😊.

I have a 2021 M440i coupe and much prefer it over the S5 coupe. The BMW just has more character and the engine in my opinion is more responsive and it handles great.
From the engeneering standpoint I6 of BMW is so nice, it would be the 1 reason for me :)

I drove both cars and i bought the BMW.
For the longest i thought i was going to get the Audi until the New 4 came out and i drove it.
B58 engine with the ZF transmission make a too good combo to not take them into consideration!
Exterior colour and interior can be vastly customised so I don't see a possible high difference here 🤔
M440i is much more fun driven with the top down ✌
I liked the rant about the disaster in the car industry. Soon they'll put a touch screen tv in there. Im 28 but I love the "old school" driving style and cars, I have a 14 yo alfa. Go in, start it up and drive, dont need 57 drive modes or something. Also, I hope to own a v8 someday, EVs feel like toys, not cars.

Exterior wise I thought the BMW won hands down and i liked the green color. But interior wise the Audi won for me.
Don't think the 440 looks very good in a cabrio, it's sort of stubby each end even though it's longer, it's the Audi that is sleeker and has a better integrated design. Where the beemer is better is the interior colour choices are more extensive. The options lists are cut down too much with Audi under the pretext of Euro rules. Change a couple of options on the interior and black optics it would look even better but the Audi wins it anyway, its just a better looking car.
