Great read aloud idea is the first book in the Spiderwick Chronicles! Only takes 7 days to read and gets the kids hooked on a series. The kids love it!
I read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe to my 2nd grade class late in the school year last year and it was a hit! “Early” 3rd grade kiddos may love that!
7:56 That is a really good point. I don't mind the state testing because it gives valuable data and we can track growth over time, but then all the extra tests that we do in addition is a little excessive I think.
COMPLETELY agree! That is my soap box I will stand on forever laughing 😆
My 3rd graders love Sideways Stories from Wayside School. We don't always have the room for a read aloud, but they beg for this one.
Brilliant way to help them understand theme! Always a struggle!
Hillsborough County here. I’m doing Primary…. It’s been an adventure doing STAR, and IREADY is now being given the way it was originally intended.
I’m Departmentalized too , and I teach ELA. I LOVE IT! You can really dedicate your time on those lessons and perfect them instead of stretching yourself teaching several content areas
Thank you Katie, it is always great to see that you've posted, even better when you have have had a win. The win moments are the icing on the cake!
Blessings Susie🙏🇬🇧
I'm glad you're enjoying your new departmentalized model, Katie. The Wild Robot is a favorite in my class every year.
Have a magnificent year! Love all the great things you have to share ❤
Great video! Loved the way you taught theme and mostly about! 👍👏⭐️
I’m doing 3rd grade angels right now and the kids are so obsessed with it that they chose ‘3rd Grade Angels’ as their team name at our big annual fundraising event. So cute. No clue what we’ll read next as this is my first year doing a running readaloud at the end of the day.
that's adorable!
My class did that last year too!!!! We were the Allain Angels for our fun run! I made them all pipe cleaner halos on cheap headbands to wear while they ran and I wore one with a white feather boa hahaha
Love seeing teachers share their day! Great way to get tips and tricks. Just a quick note, your morning routine schedule card is misspelled ☺️
Yeahhhh someone pointed that out to me in a set up vlog 🤦♀ Need to fix that lol
Thanks for watching!
I read The Vanderbeekers of 141st St. Last year and my kids loved it!!
Elias and Agnes Våhlund has written a graphic novel that is called a handbook for superheroes. It is an amazing story about friendship and makes plenty of dilemas to talk about in class. :D
I love reading Because of Winn Dixie with this age!
I’m feeling like how you felt last year I feel like I don’t have enough time to really get down into making it fun fun because I’m teaching all subjects as a 3rd grade teacher. Our PM1 has been pushed back as well because of the same issues.
Glad to know we are in the same boat... Changing curriculums can make you feel that way time wise too... Takes time to get your groove to have wiggle room to add that fun spice unfortunately.. wishing you a wonderful PM 1 when it happens!! ♥
I learn myself from yall ❤❤❤
I always love your fun coffee drinks.
I always start the year by reading Frindle.
When I taught 4th grade some books I loved for read alouds: Because of Winn Dixie, Shiloh, Wonder, Bud Not Buddy, and The One and Only Ivan. Now that I’m teaching 1st those are all mostly too “heavy” for the kids but I still love doing read alouds. My favorite series to read to my Firsties is Zoey and Sassafras. ❤📖
I am behind on your videos, but we read The World According to Humphrey and the kids love it. Some kids that are intimidated by chapter books enjoy reading other books in the Humphrey series. They really love it!
You should read The Wild Robot. My third graders love it. I read all three books to them.
I am reading the Magic Treehouse Series with my students this year. 📚
@@kass3695 Instagram fam!! Love magic tree house 😊
I enjoy your vlogs. I found you this summer when you started setting up your room. I would love to know how you make your iced coffee at home. I'm trying to start making my own.
@@P.Sheppard I usually buy a cold brew when it’s buy one get one at Publix (stok brand, or califia farms, or bizzy) and I use just any kind of creamer I’m enjoying at the time 🤷🏻♀️ this summer I had left over caramel sauce from a dessert party so I’d drizzle a little of that in too!
Would you/David do a video on making the cold brew?? I buy stok/califia cold brew but even that gets expensive! Would love to make my own at home but I’m intimidated 😂
We buy the grounds from a local shop that a ground for cold brew... Then he soaks the grounds for a few days in water and strains it to make the concentrate 😊 He googled the ratios
3rd grade in Ohio takes paper pencil tests for the state test. It’s the only grade that isn’t online, but it’s so much easier for us!
You can get a usb extender for that usb in the front of your smart board. I have one from Amazon that is small and has 4 ports.
@@gromo5412 oooh I should!!
Hello Mrs. Katie. My first comment here.
I’m an elementary school teacher in Tokyo, Japan.
After this, I will watch your vlogs. I’m looking forward to do it😊
Plz ask you just one question.
When do you prepare for lessons? (Copies, slides, worksheets etc.)
❤
Always great info Katie! How long is your Flex Time?

I am currently reading "The Wild Robot" with my 3rd graders since the movie is coming out this month :)
@@norisleidysuarez1798 oooooh that’s a great idea!!
Where are your slide templates from? Adorable!
@@mollya.4791 here is the video I made explaining how I make them: ruclips.net/video/_MgcL7zrNSM/видео.htmlsi=wUfRX3N6itCwQO7-
Scheduling wise, when do you fit in the read aloud? Do you have that time built in? ❤
End of the day during pack up and snack!
With the theme lesson, do you ever read aesops fables to them? I just remember those all ending with the strong called out theme
@@camkind4377 we are learning it with folktales to start! We teach fables more in depth at the end of the year, but folktales are similar in that the theme is usually clear 😊
What do the flowers next to your schedule cards mean again? I remember that I loved it and wanted to use it but for the life of me can’t remember! Teacher brain 😆😆😆
@@monicavasquez304 flowers are times they can use the restroom without having to use the signal to ask 🌸
@@mrs_katie_in_elementaryThaaaaats right!! Thank you!!!
Hi Katie ! I wonder were you got those comprehension words on the cabinets ? If you can link them that would be great
@@HAYDENCORTINAS if you go to the link in my Instagram bio I have a shared resources folder and it is in there 😊
Florida here🙋🏻♀️ Same situation here in South Florida Kiddos took PM1 Reading Wednesday and math next Wednesday…then comes iReady. Did you guys already do iReady Diagnostic yet?
@@monicavasquez304 we do not have to use the iReady diagnostic thankfully! We did a Lexia placement and our math department did an iXL benchmark
What time do you start work? Seems dark when you arrive?
I have a question about why does the school always change the way the teaching system goes every year?
How long do you read the novel to them each day?

You shouldn't use the word in the definition. When I teach vocabulary, I give the definition and use it in context or get them to use a dictionary and put it in context.

It's so bizarre to me that you don't know what you are doing next. We have to have basic plan for the whole term that can be tweaked depending on if they need more time to learn something or we can just do a quick review. We literally know that in week 5 on the Monday we will do xyz.
So it is crazy to me that you haven't planned out everything based on their needs. You must do a LOT of planning regularly. I would hate that.
We have a pacing guide with an outline of all the skills/texts we teach and in what order and the number of instructional days it will take to cover it. Is it down for a BRIEF period of time each week to look at what we have accomplished and select what days I will teach what the next week.
