Eldritch Horror, Legends of Andor, War of the Ring, Battle of the Five Armies, Mage Knight, This War of Mine, and Gloomhaven would have been perfect for my younger self!

A lot of similarities for us! Will be interesting to see if our kids get into our heavier games a lot as they get older... They'll definitely be exposed to way more than we were as kids haha. -Ryan

I'm going with what my friends and I would have played when I was between maybe 15 and 22. We would have been all over Twilight Imperium 4. Like you mentioned with Heroscape, I think that TI was around but we didn't know about it. The other 4, would have been Heroscape, Dominion, AHLCG, Memoir 44.

Yeah TI4 could have been amazing, if anything our limitation would have been having enough players consistently. Your other 4 all would have been great picks for us as well. 👍 -Ryan

I was heavily involved in wargaming when I was in Jr. High (not Middle School, it was a different century 8-) ) and we were obsessed with complexity and detail. With that in mind:
Dominion - Infinite variety of games and an excellent design.
L5R CCG - One of the most intricate of CCGs, with may routes to victory and excellent when played with more than 2 players.
Hero System RPG - Elegant gameplay married to byzantine character creation (if you want it to be -- I would have wanted it to be).
Descent - One of the most simulationist of the dungeon crawler games. This might be replaced by Dungeon Universalis, once I get through the rules.
Advanced Squad Leader - Squad Leader came out when I was in HS; ASL is a better implementation of that system. Alternate choice here would have been the Assault series of tactical WWIII games from GDW (Assault, Boots & Saddles, Bundeswehr, and Chieftain).
    or SPI's The Next War.

Nice picks! Definitely something about the immense amount of free time as a kid that opens the door to really digging in and mastering complex systems, I agree that I could have seen myself obsessing over some of the more complex games on our list. -Ryan

If you still crave the OG YuGiOh experience you should check out their new Speed Duel box series. It's basically YuGiOh - The Board game. Each box comes with 8 sets pre-constructed decks that are evenly matched against each other and don't contain any of the crazy summoning mechanics of modern YuGiOh, only older cards. No booster packs needed!

Man it would be a super nostalgic experience haha, but if we're being honest, modern board gaming has really replaced the more traditional TCG itch for us. But that sounds like a great product for those that just want to play and not necessarily collect! -Ryan

Fun idea! I thought these games would have been in the same timeframe as when you were kids, at least that's how I imagined it. I think I would've enjoyed 6 Nimmt (1994) and For Sale (1997), both games I actively play and enjoy today. I don't think Catan or Condottiere would've appealed to my child brain even though they were released around the same time. But it's cool to see so many good games these days that are fun for kids and adults.

Yeah, would have been a much different list if we only considered games that existed at the time! For Sale and 6 Nimmt are both fun casual card games, we actually had both fairly early on in our gaming journey.

    Interesting premise.
    5. G.I. Joe Deck building game
    4. Heat
    3. Descent 2nd edition
    2. Imperial Assault
    1. Sentinels of the Multiverse
    Honorable mention: Xia

Nice, I hadn't thought of Xia (and haven't tried it), but I could see that kind of sandbox experience being perfect for when we were younger. It's crazy to think how many campaign games we could have finished that just aren't feasible for us anymore. 😂 -Ryan
