Thanks for this, PV. Really helpful. Gotta say I've very sad to see the end of professional Magic. Likely nearly every recent big MTG change, I chalk this up to the money-hungry suits at Hasbro.
U've got a great attitude. To have such a great outlook and maturity in the face of uncertainty like this seems like one of the best reasons to get better at playing Magic!

who would honestly dislike these videos? this talent is taking time out of his day to inform us as players about the game at a professional stand point... thumbs up and support geeez.
I'm very new to Magic and I'm still learning the decks (mono-white mainly) I got turned on to your content from ConvertGoBlue, while I have no real intention to play top level, I have made it to platinum 3 in the first 2 weeks (April Season), currently diamond 3 (May Season) [not a brag] just to highlight that content from people like you, who have played a long time and know all the cards, and how to play them, provide a valuable service to jumpstart the game for many players. Yes seeing a new deck every day is great but I want to play one really really well. Knowing the 'Meta' and how to play against it is vital if I hope to reach Mythic and maybe top 1200. So whilst your life is changing, direction unknown I personally hope you will continue to put out content based on your top tier knowledge. - a little long!
You are truly one of the greatest. I don't know why but when I first saw you playing at the MPT I just wanted to be a professional player. I don't know why but it was when I realised I want to live that dream too(although I am not near the age). I learned so much and started winning at draft and sealed. But now the dream is dead. It means I can't live it but I only thought I had a chance someday because of you.

You´re a class act, thank you for the video! "Getting fired" is a hard pill to swallow and usually raises the question: do I suck or does my boss suck. Of course it´s not as black and white everytime, but considering you´re the world champion it pretty much is that black and white. For me it´s incredible how humanity is expanding in every thinkable way, but the thoughts are getting more and more self centered... Best of wishes from Austria, stay positive!
@@SikkiNixx1989 You are right. I wasn't exactly thinking deeply when trying to make the best comparison, but the internet is usually the best place for hyperbole. My intention was really just to point out the greatness of PV and how I feel that it is unappreciated.

As an Arena player only, I would like to have more knowledge of how it is going to work, what are the limits of competitive playing since I'm only playing digital. Great job with your videos Paulo!
This is the first of your videos I've watched in a long time and it's impressive how much your English pronunciation and vocabulary have improved. I mean that in a nice way, because it allows you to express more of your personality, and you seem like a really positive and intelligent guy. I think you'd be great at content creation if wanted to.

Keep up the good work, and the good attitude, man. We need more happy perseverance in the face of adversity. Rooting for you and many other MTG grinders.
English is not my first language and I could understand you clearly at 1.5x, that is just to say I don’t think you speak too fast, it’s just fine. Great video btw, really well laid out arguments
Thanks for putting this out. I hope they at least reinstate hall of fame invites so we can see you at paper events going forward. Obviously the MPL had problems but I don't understand how WotC could decide the entire system needed to be scrapped (rather than re-assessing how people get in/get out, making digital tournaments easier to engage with, scheduling them such that viewership would be better, etc.) when most of the MPLs existence has been marked by the pandemic. Yes of course the system wasn't going to work properly when all events were digital and they didn't have their digital systems sorted out, what kind of data is that to make a decision like this based on? I think you're absolutely right that they're not grasping how big an impact this is going to have. Based on optics alone I think this announcement was a bit of a blunder, too. I'm glad they told pros their vague plans early on so they can start looking for other streams of income, but for all us grinders it really did just read "Hello, Planeswalkers! The dream is dead! Carry on."
Bro, I play Legends of Runeterra only and I watch your videos because they are well done and informed, because you are chill yet entertaining and because some basics and tips translate to Runeterra as well
I recommend to those who are interested in this topic to check out the Constructed Resources podcast with Louis Scott Vargis and Andrew Baekstrom. They reflect on the matter in a similar way and talk about what a more ideal system might look like holistically.
impressive video. You are heavy affected and just break this down and you are not raging against them or attacking them. everything really objective. For sure if you keep up with these videos (also the strategy ones of course they are great) this can sustain you
Great video, PVDDR. I'd love to see more content creation from you and hopefully a good reliable income stream for you from it as well. I have no aspirations to play professional MTG. I only play a few games on Arena each day and earn my dailies, sometimes making it to mythic. But I watch CGB's videos every single day, and sometimes support him with extra income. I love Magic, and I love just watching the content daily. I would love to see you doing gameplay videos here on your channel and talking through your thoughts and lines. I hope for a bright future for you, possibly here on RUclips as a content creator. Get paid, brother.
I'm coming to this video and I'm reminded of a video I saw recently which covered an interesting change in ruling in Magic because of a language barrier in an official tournament. The issue was an Italian went into combat phase but his opponent and the judge at the time ruled that he could not use a trigger on a creature which said "at the beginning of combat" because they did not accept that "combat" included the beginning of the phase in order to power up his creature. The language barrier caused a whole change in the Combat phase rules from Wizards because there was this opponent from another native language. So not having people from across the world and different languages at in-person tournaments, the game suffers just from understanding of rules within the game.
Thank you. I'm sorry this is happening like this. Professional magic has been a dream of mine for a long time. Hope everything works out for you and you can continue your career with magic in some way.
PVDR - well thanks for sharing and explaining. In some ways I have never looked at being a competitive player. But as you mention everyone wants to get better at a game they love. These days of course it is all about the money and as you explain supporting the professional players was something you need to invest money in. So for as long as you continue to make your content and enjoy sharing and helping your viewers become better players in the excellent manner you do I will continue to watch. The say the best thing you can do for someone is to give them your time, as this is time you cannot get back. Your content of course is shared and watched by many so the time you spend to create gives value to many. Long may that last. Squider Dragon {SD}. 🦑🐉
You're the best PV! Back to online mtg game after 15 years break and as a brazilian and father of 2, never aspired to be pro or competitive player. But your content is the best so far to improving my game even as a casual player. Sad to see a legend like you in that uncertain situation but I'm pretty sure your gonna overcome better from this. In my oppinion WoTC should assume paper is dead and focus on scalable pro esports tournaments. Focus on paper and US niche is a huge mistake and they will loose a lot to other esports. The workd is digital, there is no chance to run against it.
BTW. I just returned playing because of digital plataform like arena that I was dreaming for looong time. If it where just paper no chance due to costs outside US players.
Thanks for the content. Hope they develop a system which makes travel worth it for you and other competitive or even pro players to travel. As a competitive, non-pro player, I love occasionally running up against the pros even if it is usually just in the early matches of the tournament.
Im truly sorry to hear this news. It seems contrary to the popularity of magic right now. As you say tho, it seems alot is very uncertain. Time will reveal more. Maybe crunch some numbers, figure out the system you truly want and present that to other players. Maybe there is a way for you all to contribute and create the system you want? Sometimes things can seem impossible, that is usually when there are hidden opportunities. If you can see past the immediate. I hope this resolves in a favorable way for everyone. I love magic and I know you do as well PV.
There are plenty of us FNM warriors and occasional tournament players that value your content. So keep it up! And still come chill with us on the East Coast of the US!
I feel like it would definitely be worth advocating for a PT like event to be held in places outside N. America/Europe. I personally quite like the idea of a system similar to the Pokemon TCG where there are 4 major events spread throughout the year and around the world (N.America, Europe, Australia and Latin America). I guess if I were to design a system it would look something like the following: - PTQ-like events at a regional level, with the top cut getting an invite to a PT-like event - around 4 PT-like events designed to have the greatest number of players able to access one. These would probably each be on a different continent, and would each be run during different standard formats. The top 4 or 8 from these events would get an automatic worlds invite, and the next cut of players would get partial invites. - around 3 online qualifiers spread between the 'PT' events. The top one or two players get a Worlds invite, and partial invites can be won by players lower down the ranking. - local events that can provide a boost along the path, probably allowing a player that just misses top cut in a 'PTQ' to qualify for the 'PT'. These events would probably be limited to once a season for each store that runs them in the run up to the 'PT' - A Worlds event that you can qualify for either by doing extremely well in a 'PT' level tournament (as discussed above), or by accumulating enough partial invites across around 3 events. - Some way to facilitate players getting to compete against Hall of Famers, probably in the form of an automatic invite to their most local 'PT' Obviously I don't have experience designing and implementing these sorts of systems, but I feel like this sort of format would make competing for Worlds accessible enough without it being a matter of who can afford inter-continental travel.
Feels like they could learn a lot from other games that have seen tremendous growth over the years. DotA is probably the best example. Regional events that allow players to qualify for one big in-person event per year. By centering it on one big 'Worlds' style event they can put all the spectacle behind it - paid travel for players, huge prizes, robust coverage, side events, cosplay competitions... you make that 'the thing' that everyone wants to watch and aspires to qualify for. The one flashy event for a small number of qualified players is far cheaper to put on than the old PT system with all the plane tickets and appearance fees throughout the year, but it still creates that draw of watching the best-of-the-best gather and compete at the highest level. The regional events also inherit this prestige because the spectators know that they feed into the big show, so they'll follow them just to see who gets qualified and cheer on their favorite players in the hopes of seeing them at that event. I'm not sure how a system like that would work for players who want to be professional, that would depend a lot on the prize numbers. For spectators, competitors, and WotC themselves it's a very strong system though, because it's got one of the best excitement-to-price ratios in competitive gaming.
Abraços PV vc eh nosso Ayrton Senna brasileiro!!!

Sad news. I just discovered your channel and I'm blown away by the quality of your advice. I hope you are able to continue your RUclips channel, but regardless of what direction your life takes, know that you have provided a great font of joy and knowledge for many, many people
Sinto muito por tudo isso☹️. Seus vídeos me ajudaram muito a melhorar no Magic. E queria dizer que admiro você e toda a sua trajetória, continuarei aqui te acompanhando e apoiando, nós estamos com você! 🤗
tempos sombrios do magic profissional...
Não só do profissional.
PV, you're so sanguine, I really appreciate that. I'll be very sad to lose the legacy of pro players, and I hope they reconsider and make it possible to have players like you for years to come. Thanks for this video!
You Sir, are an amazing human being and a brilliant Magic player. Thank you for helping us become better not only at magic but better people. WOTC can suck it after treating you and the other HOF like this after years of representing the game. They should be embarrassed on how they have treated you. God bless you and your family.
PV is such an awesome dude. He will survive. Hope to see more content from you in the future
I already had a lot of respect for you, but this video brought it to a while new level. I wish you nothing but the best in all your future endeavors, whatever they are.
I'm a simple man, I see a video by PVDDR and automatically click like... PVDDR videos always full of great insights!
I will keep watching all of your content regardless. As a new player I have learned so much from you already in these last few months. This is the best channel out there for anyone wanting to get better at playing magic.
Great video PV! Hit me hard what they told about what they expect about the players abroad the US. Hope everything ends fine for you
i want a fraction of PVDDR's patience
who would honestly dislike these videos? this talent is taking time out of his day to inform us as players about the game at a professional stand point... thumbs up and support geeez.
jealous people probably
1/2 % is probably mostly misclick
Thank you for your honest and balanced opinion on the situation. Good luck as this unfolds, and we'll be watching!
Such an example of great professional and personal attitude! Much love!
Your attitude is part of why you are my favorite Magic player of all time. I hope you find a way to make this work out for you. All the best.
I like your positive attitude. It`s amazing.
Great video PV. Glad I met you along the way in 2006 in Hawaii. Thank you for taking the time to explain all of this.
This is such a thoughtful, mature response.
Boa sorte PV. Torcendo para que vc e tantos jogadores de mtg q dedicaram anos e anos da vida a isso encontrem um caminho de sucesso e felicidades! Torcendo bastante pra que tudo caminhe bem. Abraços
Best of wishes from Austria, stay positive!
great video PVDDR
Dido?
Imagine a company not wanting their Lebron James to be able to play the game. Great video
They want 'LeBron' to play, they just don't want to pay him.
Alot of sports leagues are like this and Magic has been in the past, so not so shocking. What's shocking is comparing MtG to the NBA.
@@SikkiNixx1989 You are right. I wasn't exactly thinking deeply when trying to make the best comparison, but the internet is usually the best place for hyperbole. My intention was really just to point out the greatness of PV and how I feel that it is unappreciated.
Força aí Paulão !!!
Não desanima não, estamos com vc !!
Thank you for putting out this video. I know how hard it must have been for you to lose your job suddenly. I am hoping for the best though I sense that Wizards is losing money which is why they are doing this. Wishing you the best, World Champ. :)
Sorry to hear this. Hope you figure things out. I enjoy your channel and will continue watching for as long as you upload - which will hopefully be for a long time still.
Personally I hope this leads you to more content creation. You are definetly great at that.
Thanks for this message. Don't stress out too much, you'll be fine! :)
As an Arena player only, I would like to have more knowledge of how it is going to work, what are the limits of competitive playing since I'm only playing digital. Great job with your videos Paulo!
It's sad that such large parts of the world will be cut off from paper tournaments.
Such a professional person, I 'll follow you whatever you're going to do
I think you should just start to stream on twitch. People will support you, your tutorials and game play is very cool to watch.
PVDDR was once bitten by a stone coil serpent. After 7 agonizing days the serpent died.
Even better considering you may consider him WUBRG
keep stealing jokes and chuck norris will kick you
I hope things will change for the best for you. Your content is awesome 👍👍
This is the first of your videos I've watched in a long time and it's impressive how much your English pronunciation and vocabulary have improved. I mean that in a nice way, because it allows you to express more of your personality, and you seem like a really positive and intelligent guy. I think you'd be great at content creation if wanted to.
It sucks bro, but we must be faithful that things will become clear and favorable in the futuro. I feel you right now. I send you strenght and the best wishes. I really think there will be a way to fix the whole thing. Huge embrace
Keep up the good work, and the good attitude, man. We need more happy perseverance in the face of adversity. Rooting for you and many other MTG grinders.
It's good to hear you talk about it! thanks bro! :)
PV, I have a feeling that you are going to be fine my friend. Don’t fret, you got this!
keep up awesome content and you will kill it.
you are not only one of the best magic player ever but such a nice person.
Love from Italy
Was just wondering if you would make a video about this issue
Hang on mister. You re a legend. I cannot believe they treat you (and others) like this. Sad day... Love the content by the way. I watch all of it.
English is not my first language and I could understand you clearly at 1.5x, that is just to say I don’t think you speak too fast, it’s just fine. Great video btw, really well laid out arguments
o canal vai continuar PV, isso a gente sabe. e vai crescer.
Keep the content going! I personally think you could could kill it with RUclips and streaming.
Keep making good videos, and we will keep patronizing you.
Such a likable champion. Honest and transparent.
As a competitive, non-pro player, I love occasionally running up against the pros even if it is usually just in the early matches of the tournament.
thank you for making this video Paulo
é realmente uma pena que você já não tinha um canal no Twitch, eu tenho certeza que muita gente iria assistir. Mas talvez ainda não é tarde demais!
You should be able to pick up some sponsors to get you to tournaments. Rooting for you PV!
Thanks for the great video and content, PV.
Thanks for sharing this, I am happy that PT's are back but I hope they return as before and Pros can keep playing it
Well whatever the outcome, thanks for the vids you've done they've made me way better at this game.
Sorry to hear that bro! You’ll overcome, somehow
There are plenty of us FNM warriors and occasional tournament players that value your content. So keep it up! And still come chill with us on the East Coast of the US!
as soon as I heard the announcement, I was wondering how it would impact you, how you would feel about it
I feel like it would definitely be worth advocating for a PT like event to be held in places outside N. America/Europe. I personally quite like the idea of a system similar to the Pokemon TCG where there are 4 major events spread throughout the year and around the world (N.America, Europe, Australia and Latin America).
I guess if I were to design a system it would look something like the following:
- PTQ-like events at a regional level, with the top cut getting an invite to a PT-like event
- around 4 PT-like events designed to have the greatest number of players able to access one.
These events would probably be limited to once a season for each store that runs them in the run up to the 'PT'
- A Worlds event that you can qualify for either by doing extremely well in a 'PT' level tournament (as discussed above), or by accumulating enough partial invites across around 3 events.
- Some way to facilitate players getting to compete against Hall of Famers, probably in the form of an automatic invite to their most local 'PT'
Obviously I don't have experience designing and implementing these sorts of systems, but I feel like this sort of format would make competing for Worlds accessible enough without it being a matter of who can afford inter-continental travel.
