Thanks for taking the time! I just want to touch on a couple things here that may help with the process.
I start with my Stanley tape measure to get our dimensions of the Window Sill and Apron.
Opening (from drywall to drywall) + 3” = WINDOW SILL
Window Sill - 1” = APRON
frame of window to finished edge of drywall + 1 1/2” = WINDOW SILL DEPTH
Next, using my Dewalt 12” Miter Saw I cut the length of my 1x8 material for the window sill. Then cut the length of my apron using a 15 degree cut on the ends. Like I said this is the specifications that DR HORTON requires us to do.
Then using the Dewalt 10” table saw I rip my piece to 6 3/4” or overall depth for this particular window. Real easy for me to set the “fence” of the table saw into position and just lock it in. Make sure when you are using a table saw you always maintain pressure on the material pushing it down and to the “fence”. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS hold pressure to the piece between the blade and the “fence”, if not the material may bind and shoot back at you!!!! Your window WILL most likely be different dimensions so please use my easy math to get yours RIGHT.
Next, Routing our material. Don’t be afraid of this step! Yes it requires the tool, which in my case is the Dewalt 20v Router. Just follow the instructions to set the router bit in the tool correctly and set the depth. Maybe try on a scrap piece a couple times to get your profile right. Listen and watch this part of the video if you need good explanation of how to hold and what to focus on while using the tool.
On to scribing the Window Sill. I use a speed square to help with verifying my pencil lines and determining if the drywall is square to the window. Remember 3” larger so split the difference 1 1/2” each side for the “ears”. Once you get the window sill centered continue to hold pressure so it doesn’t move while you figure out the angles. Draw your lines and cut out the back corner pieces, I use a Dewalt 20V Jigsaw to make it easy.
Installing the Window Sill does require some focus, but we can DO IT! DO IT NOW! Start with getting your reveal in one corner of the sill and then level that side. Move across the sill to match your reveal against the window until you get to the other side. Level that side as well with a handy Stabila speed level. Then with a larger level place on the front of the sill and verify the front is level and straight. I use a screwdriver to pry and hold my material when shooting any nails so my material doesn’t move when firing the Metabo 2 1/2” 16 ga. nail gun. The apron is very easy in our case here, just center it under the window sill and nail it snug up to the bottom. After caulking and paint your new Window Sill will be ready to go!

Can't imagine that lack of shims is gonna hold up once some flower pots are sitting on there. No one is standing on it, but lots of us put fairly heavy things on window sills. This is the kind of work that makes people hate track homes.
Good tips on lining it up and measuring it.
Although I would use shims, the apron likely provides sufficient support much like a riser supports a stair tread.
Agreed. I can't blame this guy for following the guidelines of his employer, but for him to casually justify his method by saying "Nobody is standing on these things" is lame and misleading. Everybody puts stuff on windowsills -- that's what they're for. The apron will probably keep the front edge up, but the back edge (against the window frame) will slip down on the brads once the caulk line gives way, and that won't take long after somebody moves in. Liners and casings don't need much fastening strength; sills do.

Dr Horton did not show that much love and affection when they built my home. My window sills are basic ASF, along with several other things in the house. Nothing is symmetrical in my home.

Do not use mdf. Use clear pine or pfj. Mdf is cardboard.... when building for yourselfe use wood.
I can totally agree with you! All my material packs for these “track” homebuilders are always MDF for window sills. With a good finish of paint they seem to hold up “decently” for a few years, but yes if you can afford just a little more going wood is much better! Thanks for commenting! Have a blessed day 😎

If you ever do a barndoor or pocket door, I would watch that many times!! Plus crown molding. I can never figure out how to cut that stuff. :/

Thanks for the tutorial. Builder did not put sills on any windows, and I am interested in adding some. You make it look so easy, but you are a skilled builder. I don't have the power tools to accomplish this task so I may have to hire someone to do this for my home.

I also do trim work, I do it in Portland Oregon. You are doing great, I like your approach to work. I usually put window sill along the bottom edge of the window. That is, with a window frame thickness of 1 1/2 ", we get a reveal of about 3/4", depending on the thickness of the window sill material.

Really appreciate you leaving some feedback! Some of the windows in the homes I’m in vary on the frame thicknesses. Also the framing isn’t perfect so we have decided as a trim company to just give a standard reveal in every single window. Thus leading to a smaller reveal than 3/4”… if it was my personal home I would be matching the reveal on all 4 sides of the window, but I would have more control over the drywall or jamb extensions to do so… don’t have that time or luxury in the track homes with DR Horton unfortunately.

I ripped it out and followed your instructions and they came out amazing and it was fun to install! I did more of a modern look, but the same concept! Thanks for the great tutorial and tips!

Thank you! My home came with (zero) windowsills in any of the windows. It was built in 1980, so maybe it was a budget skip for the previous owner (I have found ALOT of these) or it might have been out of style at the time? Either way, I want to add them so this tutorial is excellent and makes total sense!

I love your teaching methods man. The hypothetical situation at 9:40 ish I would lightly pencil line against the square the way it is and then measure the gap from the light pencil line to the square line then I can do what I call flipping the angle if that makes sense to you.

Our house is getting built in Castle Rock and to add the window sills like this was a $3,800 upgrade for 6 Windows. I think I might just try to do it myself after watching the video. Thanks! Great video - prescriptive instructions and very engaging host. 1 question is what to do with the sides of the apron - the edges seem like they would be sharp. Do you add sides to the apron like a joint or just paint over them as-is?
Thank you very much for watching and commenting! In this case I will leave the apron ends as is and the painter will caulk and paint everything. The edges aren’t really sharp after paint is applied, but great question. I’m just following the builders specs…some aprons do have actual returns or a 45 degree miter to match the detail on the ends, but in this case the builder just wants a 15 degree miter on the ends. There's actually a way to scribe those gaps created by uneven casing work. Hold the stool against the casing at a slight angle. Hold a pencil against the wall and drag it from front to back. Use a jigsaw to follow that scribe. Got that trick from Norm Abram (the James Brown of DIY).

Awesome video man! Just purchased a house that we want to add window trim, but thinking the current ears are too short for it to look right. I’m assuming I would need to Replace the stool with the width of the trim determining what the ears width should be on each side? A video of placing trim around the sides and top of these windows would be awesome!!!
Sorry it took a while to answer…you are exactly right on replacing the stool to make the ears bigger! You would want to add the width of your trim and an additional 1/2” (I personally want to see the stool wider than the casing) Unfortunately I don’t do a lot of jamb extending and casing for windows, just the stool and apron. I do have a question - is it a bad idea to try to slope the windowsill ever so slightly toward the interior of the house, so that any water wouldn't be able to spill back into the window? Or in your experience is a perfectly level windowsill the way go to? Thanks so much!
I personally would keep them level instead of sloping them. I also wouldn’t let any water get inside the window as well. Maybe place some paper towels or a towel on your sill if you put plants on them. Thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

Hey Will thank you for the comment! I’m using a 1/4” beading bit (not round over bit!) The bit is made by Diablo and I buy them at Home Depot...Lowe’s for some reason doesn’t carry that exact bit!

Hi, thanks for the tutorial. I've recently took off and old plastic window sill and it looks like it was put on some sort of adhesive, i need to put it back but do you know what I can use to secure it in place? I don't think nails would do in this case :D Also why do you leave that gap underneath the wood (where you put your screwdriver)? Thanks :)
For your plastic material I would use an adhesive like Liquid Nail. You may have to buy a caulking gun as well if you don’t already have one. Place a decent amount of adhesive on your plastic sill and place it into position, then press down firmly to smoosh the adhesive and let sit for a few hours to dry.
If I nailed the sill material to the framing and didn’t leave any gap, my reveal from the sill material and the window frame wouldn’t be consistent in every window of the house. My focus is to keep the reveal the same at every window, so the gap left underneath changes from window to window. I hope that makes sense…thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎

If you are adding an apron under the sill then I'd use shims and the gap will be hidden behind the apron. Otherwise you'll just have to caulk the gap from the shims
Hey Hunter, My Richmond home has the same profile and I am replacing a couple of the sills. What size round over bit is that? Any special bit or just standard round over?
Hey Matt! The bit I’m using is a “Diablo 1/4” beading bit”. The round-over bit will look the same but has a different size wheel bearing on the end! Best place to find to find it would be Home Depot or ordering it online! Thanks for watching! Have a blessed day 😎

That looked like what's called a "beading" bit. Most likely with a 1/2" reveal on the center part of the wood.
