The issue I have is their dishonesty saying that a de 89 head possesses too much razor blade exposure.. that's hogwash and I have called them out on it.

I gotta say, this is one of the best ads I’ve seen. That fact that you’re not screaming at me to not skip the video, that you’re sitting in your shop with the machines running in the background, that you’re just talking and not reading directly from a script, it’s just so genuine. I don’t use razors to shave, I’ve been using a trimmer on a 1mm setting for years because shaving caused so much irritation to my face so I’ve just been living the scruff life. I don’t even like shaving. But I’m seriously considering buying one of your damn razors. Dammit. Good work, I hope y’all win.

Do it man. They're legit. The key to less irritated skin is prep work. Hot cloth to expand the pores and get some of the natural oil up. Use heated shave cream or butter. Whether chemically self heated (i can only recommend van der hagen's self heating stuff) or just warming a can of barbasol or whatever flavor cream or butter or gel you want. You can do this by wrapping a hot towel around the can. Or they even have special units for this now.
After your shave rinse with cold water or preferably get another towel and soak it in the coldest water possible. If you have access to icewater, great. Or even just using an ice cube. Put the cold towel on your face or rub the icecube over the freshly shaved areas. This will help close up your pores and alleviate minor irritations and redness and can even close up small knicks and cuts. Then use a nice after shave balm. Duke Cannon's after shave balm ice cold is what I've been using for the past two or three years.
Edit; I also recommend first shaving "with the grain" and then a second time "against the grain" for best results. Re-applying the cream/gel/butter between going with and against is your choice, but I've never found it to be necessary. Also if your hair is really short you can probably just go against the grain... But this kinda depends how coarse your hair is as well.

Dude, I am 43, on the spectrum, with sensitive skin, and used to do the same thing: I hated shaving so much that I would just use my electric trimmer at 1mm. Hey there! Did you end up getting one? I heard of Henson last year, but it took me that whole year to finally decide to get one. I'm impressed. I used to use disposable cartridges on my legs and armpits. I never shaved in the winter to give my skin a break. When I shave every day, my armpits get bubbly, ingrown hairs, infected, and hyperpigmented. My legs wouldn't be that bad, but it would still get ingrown hairs and slightly irritated. I tried the Henson, and I can't even feel the blade! I've been shaving my underarms every day with it, and there is no sign of irritation! It's actually helped clear up my previous irritation. So I know everyone's skin is different, but I hope you give them a try. They do have a 100-day guarantee

This is my first ever razor. Meaning I've learned how to shave with this, and I've only ever used this. And coming from me, an absolute novice who still doesn't even know what the difference between shaving creams, and soaps, this is an absolutely fantastic razor. I get a baby smooth face after three passes, with grain, across grain, and against grain. Zero pain at all. Amazing grip, amazing style, and amazing shave. Seriously, if you are wondering if this is worth it, stop wondering and just buy it. I may use this razor for ever as its just so great. But even if I decide to switch out, I will be sticking with DE razors. So thanks Henson, this is a wonderful lifetime product that has introduced me to shaving.

I'm 61. My father got me an electric when I was 18. I've used electrics almost all my life. Though there was a period of a year or two in my 30's when I switched to twin-blade disposables. I decided I liked electric better and went back. Electric has been mostly "okay". Takes several passes and still leaves some. But was overall better than the twin-blade disposables. This is my first time to use a safety razor, and yet I splurged and got the titanium having never tried a safety razor. Kinda risky to invest that much for my first time using a safety razor. But I was pretty confident I would like this, so I went for it.

But then, I'm afraid I can't afford 70 USD for your product, because in my part of the world (Poland) the 70$ turns into 300$ (the money exchange rate issue and the difference in average income). While I do believe you as a company have a great contribution to wet shaving, I disagree with the sales pitch that the wet shaving industry was broken or purposely made so ..
A de 89 razor head is hardly anything but a mild razor and it's barely medium and has no real blade exposure..
I also believe that if you'd do the wet shaving community a favor and release both aggressive razor plate options and stainless steel razors for purchase you'd get a rise in sales and you'd be able to reach more in the community..
This is a gracious critique and in no way bashing the products you have gentlemen.

  • @sphudson

I purchased this product earlier this summer. Very high quality. I now feel it was a little bit of a mistake buying a single-blade safety razor to be used as my sole shaver. I've been using the Gillette Mach 5 for many years. The Mach 5 has five (5) blades working, not a single blade. I don't believe the false hype about reduced "chatter" with a precision single-blade safety razor. The Mach 5 cartridges (and others) have been on the market for decades and the manufacturers have perfected their designs over the years. I personally get the best shave using a cartridge razor. I work from home and shave every 1-2 weeks, so I don't have to change out my cartridge but once every 2-3 months. So, I am a special low-use case.
HOWEVER, with all of that said, I think the single blade razor is perfect for the initial 1-2 passes to get the major stuff to avoid dulling out the cartridge. Then, use the cartridge for the final pass and touch-ups to get a smooth shave.

Depending on how coarse and thick your hair is, you get between 3-6 good shaves before you should change blades.
Personally I go through about 2 blades a month, maybe 3 if I decide to shave more often.

Am an Englishman in Pretoria. I am 64 and have been shaving since 1977. My first razor was a Gillette G2 2 blade cartridge razor. I've upgraded to every Gillete multiblade cartrige iteration since. My latest being the Gillette Fusion Pro Glide.
5 years back Gillette releases an advert that is sanctimonious, woke and misandrist. It irritated the living crap out of me. I vowed to get away from the brand, but not until I found an as good or better replacement. I recently heard about the Henson Al13. After a worrying amount of due diligence, I shipped one, plus 100 blades. Cost USD$80 plus shipping and 15% VAT.
I'm only 3 days in and it's a transformative revelation. It is so smooth. It shaves alot closer, is better around awkard bits, such as under the nose and leaves zero irritation. I am completely sold and shall be sticking with it. I also intend to evangelise for it and buy a few as gifts. Starting with my wife, who will be getting the blue Al13 soon.
I have shaved in the shower for decades. I use Kings or Nuagé (slightly more viscous) shaving oil and the ShaveWell 5x magnifying mirror (Amazon).
    Go well!

Thanks for reaching out! We tend not to over price the product only to have it discounted often. We would rather keep the razor at a price that makes sense and is sustainable. For this reason, we do not plan on our products going on sale or offering discount codes any time in the near future. Hope that makes sense.

I need to see a comparison between your product and the 5-blade cartridge razors. You argue that cartridges clog easily. Not if I rinse after each stroke. Stop using that bs point, because it’s not a problem if you rinse regularly. Show me the results compared to a cartridge. Show me the closeness per stroke. Show me that it’s the best thing I can use as I’m transitioning so that I don’t have a 5:00 shadow by noon. Show me that it makes skin less irritated than a cartridge from dsc. I have a geology degree. I want science. Show me your product is better. Nobody does a comparison to a cartridge, and my life doesn’t give me the time or mental freedom to risk having a shadow rise through my concealer and foundation.

While Henson seems like a unique concept,I still say that the shaving industry isn't entirely broken.
Sure cartridges are a broken over priced thing, and I believe that they have maybe a niche market in a niche market, but simply don't say that it's all broken.
Because people can use the de 89 r89 safety razor heads and the blade exposure on the standard and clone heads of these aren't bad and they're basically the ideal beginner safety razor..
