I just listened to this great song again because, literally, it is time for me to get out of this house. I have lived here for 24 years. There are ghosts. There are toxic personalities. The rent was cheap. Thank you Shawn. The chords. The lyrics. Thank you.
I am from Malaysia and was inside supermarket and heard this cool song. Trying to listen carefully the lyrics " I spent 17 years to save my soul.." and wallaaa ! I got it!
This album empowers me and brings me to tears at the same time. Haven't stopped listening since I fell in love with sunny came home in elementary school.
I first heard this song in 1998 when I was cleaning tables at a fast food restaurant late in the evening after a rainstorm that left the air smelling like moisture, the blacktop outside all wet with the parking lot mercury vapor lights reflecting off the water and the storm clouds all pinkish/red from the setting sun. The song was emanating from the speakers embedded in the ceiling but they were so muffled I only heard part of the lyrics and remembered the harmonica riff. Today I finally found the song on RUclips after skimming through hundreds of videos and found this one. A 19 year long earworm has been solved.
This song came out when she was in her 40s. It’s so rare to see female musicians become popular at that age because the industry only seems to value women for their youth and sex appeal. But Shawn broke the norm and proved that talent is the most important thing. She is of course beautiful but it doesn’t even matter because her music is the focus.
Rare enough (and to her age-defying credit) that when this song and "Sunny Came Home" hit big, I was about 30 and basically assumed to this day that she was younger than I.
I've just heard this tune on Morning America today 2-23-2021! I'm minding my business. Suddenly I heard the lyrics, I stopped what I was doing to listen to this lady! My goodness so inspiring. We need more songs like this these days! I love this tune!
This is a simply great song Shawn is awesome and this sounds as fresh as it did when it came out She's a national treasure Brilliant song-writer and such a gorgeous voice If she told me to get out, I surely would
The first time I heard "Get Out of This House" was in the summer of 1998. I was watching VH1 and Shawn played a concert for an audience of mostly children. I remember seeing the preview and seeing a clip of her playing the harmonica on this song. On the original track, producer John Leventhal played harmonica. Before singing "Get Out of This House," Shawn was saying how John usually played the harmonica in her band. She invited several kids up on stage who played harmonica. Each one got a quick turn before she performed this song. It has stuck with me ever since, just as her signature song, "Sunny Came Home," had done months earlier. I had a friend and neighbor, who is a musician, who had the "A Few Small Repairs" album. I remember being at his house one afternoon in the fall of 1998 and seeing the track listing. While I didn't listen to the album, I correctly guessed the song with the harmonica was "Get Out of This House." It wasn't until a few years ago that I discovered that I was right. I love this and "Sunny Came Home." Shawn received a Grammy nod for "Get Out of This House," but lost to Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart." "Sunny Came Home" won Song of the Year and Record of the Year the following year, at the 40th Grammy Awards.
When my cousin passed, his wife gave my mom one of his CDs. I have been using said CD in my car. That CD is A Few Small Repairs and I listen to this song multiple times per day 😂😂😂😂😂
Many, but a memorable song from Colvin. It's crazy but so meaningful. I miss that time, not so long ago when there were so many great female singer songwriters, with Colvin heading the charts.
Going thru some big life changes right now, deciding to move out of a bad town. Will miss a few people but... gotta do what's best for yourself. Seems the perfect song right at this point in my life mid 20s
Shawn's always been aces at putting the "rock" back in "folk-rock". Been an ardent fan since I first heard "Shotgun Down The Avalanche" 20 some-odd years ago. A great singer/songwriter/guitarist who puts on a great live show.
Heard this song at office max and like feel in love with it and the harmonica kept on playing in my head but all i could remember was the chorus and i finally found it YAYYYY!!!!
Thank you for bringing these singers to my attention. I’m a long time fan of Lucy Kaplansky and Lucinda Williams, but I’ve not heard of Lynn Miles, until now. Thanks for the introduction.
There was an episode of the Garry Shandling show where she performed this solo and it was the first time I heard it. Absolutely beautiful and I've been trying to find it ever since
I remember the first song I ever heard of her was another round of Blues, and I couldn't let go of her music! And here it is 2023! Damn near 23 years ago! It Must Be Love, I Jam alone right beside her, I love her timing and cording. Piece
This song came out when I was deciding to end my marriage. It was perfect. I felt like she was speaking to me in the opening lyrics, telling ME to get out of my house.
I love this song...video too. I love that feeling of liberation she is singing about, when you finally realize it is time to get something out of your life & you do it.... Go baby to your momma, go back to high school. LOL!
i feel a bit dim now, today is the first time i've heared of Shawn Colvin ( mind you i am in England and country music isn't exactly in abundance on the air waves... so not completely my fault ;-p ... i love this song, i love her playing... it's got a touch of Neil Young .. and great lyrics ... brilliant :-)
Man this was such a great song. How come we never hear this kind of music today? Where are the Sheryl Crow/Shawn Colvin/Paula Cole of today??? How come all we hear these days are either mumble rap, or songs about sex, or any of those k-pop manufactured "artists"?
Go jump in the lake, go ride up the hill Get out of this house It's a house of your making, it's a house of ill will Get out of this house Go listen to Buddha, go listen to Joe Get out of this house If anyone asks, you tell them you don't know Get out of this house I spent 11 long years in a hothouse zone I spent 29 more trying to get home Well, I never got home, but I did what I did And I got myself this house, and you can't come in, oh Yeah Get out of this house Get out of this house I'm the queen of my castle, I'm the king of my room Get out, get out of this house I got more than I need, more than I ever could use Get out, get out of this house I spent 17 years trying to save my soul I spent 23 more down in the hole Now my soul is all right, but I might get found out And I got myself this house now, and I can't get ou-out Get out of this house Get out of this house If I see you again, it will be in my head at the end of a cloud If you see me again, it will be in your head telling you to get out You act like a baby, you talk like a fool Get out of this house Go back to your mama, go back to high school Get out of this house Go jump in the lake, go jump out the door Get out, get out of this house I've had all I can stand, and I can't stand no more Get out, get out of this house Get out of this house Traducir al español
I saw Shawn solo in London in July 2018. She's lost nothing -a great performer. There's an arrogance about this track, it's feels that good!.... For guitarists try tuning EADGAE, key of A minor, with a G harp.
I am and I'm singing it too! Shawn Colvin is one of those artists that is just destined to be legendary! Her music, her lyrics, tug at my soul.
"Destined" to be legendary? She has been legendary for a long time already.
I just listened to this great song again because, literally, it is time for me to get out of this house. I have lived here for 24 years. There are ghosts. There are toxic personalities. The rent was cheap. Thank you Shawn. The chords. The lyrics. Thank you.
Why are the best songs so underplayed? This is such a good one, love it

I Love you SHAWN!!!
This album empowers me and brings me to tears at the same time. Haven't stopped listening since I fell in love with sunny came home in elementary school.
John Levanthal's awesome production and alternate tuning guitar work here is epic!!!
He was also the one behind the harmonica on this, what Shawn is miming to in the video.
it is indeed a gr=at production, The guitar solo and harmonic are out of this world

D P Same. I heard “sunny came home” from an album back in 1999. I recently found what it was called. It bothered me for years.
Lol(earworm) ..AWESOME! Great story.
That's a dedicated search ... Persistence
Yep, back in 2019 for this!
Congrats! Last week I finally (5 yrs! searching) found BIRMINGHAM by Amanda Marshall...both great women singers!
Stuck in my house cause of COVID-19 criss.....I was playing this track hoping to get out of this house.....lol ....🤣👍🇯🇲
Makes me smile and cry every time I hear it. Monster guitars. Monster songwriting.

Miss those times. We need singers like shawn colvin to make a comeback. What an uplifting song . Good times 😃😁😀

Brilliant song-writer and such a gorgeous voice

Just rediscovering this record!!! Brilliant!
I"M LOVIN" THIS SONG FROM AWESOME SHAWN COLVIN!!, the dj
Such a great record. PERFECT production.
I love this talented woman ❤❤❤❤
Wow, I forgot all about this song. Haven't heard it since the last 90's, but just a few bars and the melody came flooding back.
I love that "mid-South" twang in Shawn's music. You can tell Carbondale left a permanent mark on her.
She does us Little Egyptians proud
She does Little Egypt proud
Sounds like home
Nothing exemplifies this woman's determination to get shed of this jerk than that harmonica, especially when it makes its return towards the end.
+Ross Odom i feel the exact same way.
the only place i've ever heard people use the term "get shed of" are family in s.w. arkansas... wher u from?
i do know what it means...
Harmonica Reminds Me Of That Used In Warren Zevon’s “Splendid Isolation”. So Glad That I’m Finding More Of Shawn’s Back Catalogue ✨❤️
I swear..........The Larry Sanders Show was and is the greatest show EVER!!!!!!
How many here are still playing this song loud in 2020 ?
Even louder than usual today lol
Me 💙📡

Filmed on the 138 highway right before the 15 highway San Diego, San Andreas fault line. I know, I lived there and drove it many times .
Going thru some big life changes right now, deciding to move out of a bad town. Will miss a few people but... gotta do what's best for yourself. Seems the perfect song right at this point in my life mid 20s
I forgot how much I liked her. She's awesome.

Wow...I forgot how much I liked her music! I saw her live back in the 90's...truly singing 'bout what life experiences are about. Rock on Shawn!
Heard this song at office max and like feel in love with it and the harmonica kept on playing in my head but all i could remember was the chorus and i finally found it YAYYYY!!!!
Reminds me a lot of Lucinda Williams and Lucy Kaplanski or Lynn Miles all rolled up in one. Love her voice.
She's more than the sum of any of those parts!
Thank you for bringing these singers to my attention. I’m a long time fan of Lucy Kaplansky and Lucinda Williams, but I’ve not heard of Lynn Miles, until now. Thanks for the introduction.
Shawn Colvin Get Out Of This House is one of unheard and my personal favorite song
Truth ! She is the bomb. Once hooked you will never let go. She is so good that you will always look for more of her music.
This song is about 1998, and divorce.
It's about embracing an empty house, in lieu of the dreams of love that came before.
I love Shawn Colvin! So underrated
Reminds me of Cheryl Crow!....Hey, that's Cheryl playing bass at 2:26!
23년에 들어도 역시 대단한 노래🎉❤
Shawn is awesome and this song is wonderful
Sounds as good now as it find back when it came out
If she told me get out, I surely would
I'd get out too. She might burn it down if you don't. ;)
The entire album was awesome. Thanks for the post.
Listening to Shawn while waiting for lab tests. Others are enjoying, too!
Love me some Shawn Colvin
There was an episode of the Garry Shandling show where she performed this solo and it was the first time I heard it.
Absolutely beautiful and I've been trying to find it ever since
Omg thank you for this song ❤
Superb
Who knew Shawn would be writing songs about the 2023 congress.......in 1996!
This is a great song.
I've always loved her voice
I remember the first song I ever heard of her was another round of Blues, and I couldn't let go of her music! And here it is 2023! Damn near 23 years ago! It Must Be Love, I Jam alone right beside her, I love her timing and cording. Piece
2021. Missing the simpler times of the 90s. It had better music too.
Trivia: The Dylanesque harmonica on this track was played not by Shawn herself, but rather by the album's producer, John Leventhal.
fantastic song
This song rocks my socks off! ;)
This song came out when I was deciding to end my marriage. It was perfect. I felt like she was speaking to me in the opening lyrics, telling ME to get out of my house.
me too real poodle, me too
Crying. Because it was the same meaning for me and the end of my marriage
my soul is my house, and nobody can invade or hurt it
Same here!
Same for me. I'm so thankful for this song; it helped me focus on what I wanted and needed to do and end a bad relationship.
This song got a lot of airplay in Singapore when I moved there in 1996.
I miss the 90's:(
I live this song. God that guitar souds so good. 🇻🇪
Love this song.
What a talent *****
I first saw her around 1990,s in Sugurbush , Vermont.
I love this album
Wow love it♥️🎶
What I told him many many years ago! I hate liars & cheaters!
I miss the 90’s
Feisty Song. Love it
When I worked 3rd shift at a supermarket this song would come on every night.
Stellar ! I can't believe I only discovered her now, Better late than never.
This song is badass!!! Reminds me of Tom Petty's "Jammin Me".
It has a Petty vibe, for sure!
First time I listen this song, it sounds awesome
The 1990's: best decade ever for pretty much all genres of music.
for sure
You're so young.
I'm almost 36
+Ryah Jane Neil Finn et al certainly made the 90s a great time, but I'm old enough to remember the 60s and I wish I could go back.
me too derek, me too
It has a "Neil Young" flavor to it....very nice.
The harmonica solos definitely do!
That was what I thought when I first heard this song. Even the way she moves around in the video as she plays her guitar is very Neil Youngesque
wonderful song..............terrific
I am the only one at the car wash and listening while I wait.
He will get a $10 tip but he doesn't know it yet. :) I get slow days.
Sounds like a Crowded House tune... :)
I love this song...video too. I love that feeling of liberation she is singing about, when you finally realize it is time to get something out of your life & you do it.... Go baby to your momma, go back to high school. LOL!

Heard this song at Lowes a few days ago while getting some stuff and immediately stopped to listen. Great song.
IMAGINE NOT SMOKING WEED INTO THIS ONE
Man this was such a great song. How come we never hear this kind of music today? Where are the Sheryl Crow/Shawn Colvin/Paula Cole of today??? How come all we hear these days are either mumble rap, or songs about sex, or any of those k-pop manufactured "artists"?
A música de hoje em dia virou um grande circo de horrores aqui no Brasil e aí nos EUA. Eu não ouço mais rádio atualmente.
Same here..I wonder why America is not making these songs anymore
What a beautiful voiced Angel is Miss Colvin
Go jump in the lake, go ride up the hill
Get out of this house
It's a house of your making, it's a house of ill will
Get out of this house
Go listen to Buddha, go listen to Joe
Get out of this house
If anyone asks, you tell them you don't know
Get out of this house
I spent 11 long years in a hothouse zone
I spent 29 more trying to get home
Well, I never got home, but I did what I did
And I got myself this house, and you can't come in, oh
Yeah
Get out of this house
Get out of this house
I'm the queen of my castle, I'm the king of my room
Get out, get out of this house
I got more than I need, more than I ever could use
Get out, get out of this house
I spent 17 years trying to save my soul
I spent 23 more down in the hole
Now my soul is all right, but I might get found out
And I got myself this house now, and I can't get ou-out
Get out of this house
Get out of this house
If I see you again, it will be in my head at the end of a cloud
If you see me again, it will be in your head telling you to get out
You act like a baby, you talk like a fool
Get out of this house
Go back to your mama, go back to high school
Get out of this house
Go jump in the lake, go jump out the door
Get out, get out of this house
I've had all I can stand, and I can't stand no more
Get out, get out of this house
Get out of this house

If you've ever seen her live, you'd know she totally rocks on stage.
i've re discovered her. what a find!
Shawn, thank you for being such an amazing songwriter and continuing to make great music! :)
Favorite song by her.
This was the song I bought A Few Small Repairs for.
Still blasting it I herd it way back when Vin scelsal played it
Before fame, she performed at our local Basilica Block Party and she had people crying.
@cookieman38111 Thats Vasquez Rocks in California near the 14 freeway. Been there many times myself.
Nice song. Never heard of it before.
Oh this song just pulls me back to late 90s :)
Love this album
Damn' 15 years ago! 1996! Where does time go?
I saw Shawn solo in London in July 2018. She's lost nothing -a great performer. There's an arrogance about this track, it's feels that good!.... For guitarists try tuning EADGAE, key of A minor, with a G harp.
Brilliant music.

My new anthem.
