Why not a simple pulley system? Make the steps deeper too! I believe a ladder that doesn’t stay down is a better idea for your hallway 🤷♀️, it’s yours, do what you want ❤
Shawn love your motivation and diligence. years loves you. I've done construction for 50 years. I'm impressed. That loft should have a attic ladder , remember we all get older and wiser. I'm going blind but I enjoy you and all you've accomplished.
In our cabin, we went between the two logs with the ladder, added a pivot point at the top, then used a rope/cable at the other end so we could raise the ladder out of our way when not in use.
Floor looks really nice. Interested in how you are going to finish off the open area to the basement area. Give beautiful Cali a hug. Thanks for the video.
Looks like a railing would be a good addition in your mudroom to save you any accidental tumbles! Some of us are just drawn to open spaces and end up -well you know!
So much great advice coming from your subs . I love reading all the comments, some really good suggestions . Depending on space and not being there physically. it is challenging to come up with ideas but everyone seems to be helping with that and maybe some you have not thought of yourself yet. Great people here.
Shawn, look into fold against the wall staircases. You can then have the stairs folding out against the bathroom wall, in front of the masterbed door and use the platform as a landing Google bcompact folding-staircase
Wow Thankyou for your comment This is purrrfect for our attic Awesome quality made and absolutely SHAWN The great builder will find it impressive ❤️❤️❤️
My dad built a set of folding stairs to the loft above the racecar in his garage in the mid '70s. It folds the same way as the Bcompact but it's made from 2x lumber with steel hinges. It's ~5" thick when folded against the wall but is every bit as solid as any conventional fixed staircase. It has 2 x 12 stringers that are not notched, 2 x 10 treads, and is probably 12 feet high. The treads land on blocking so the hinges aren't carrying the load. It's freaking brilliant. I don't know if he saw the design somewhere or thought it up himself but I've never seen another built the same way. Funny thing is we ended up leaving the stairs down all the time, except when showing people how cool the folding stairs are. lol
@@Mister510 yes thats the kind of thing I had in mind for Shawn, the Google was to simplify a search, there's no need to go fancy, rustic but solid is the best. Thanks for sharing
I put together a ship’s ladder to my loft. Used 2x10’s as the stringers. Recess cuts for the treads (10) made out of 2x12’s. Ladder extends 4’ past the floor. Top step level w the loft floor. Cut away handles in the 2x10’ at the top. Works really well. Kick’s out 36”
Build one side pole of the ladder three feet higher than the other and run your ladder rungs to the top of the main cross beam of the cabin ....you can then use the long pole as a handhold as you assend the ladder to step directly onto the loft floor.......it works great as I hand one in a home build in 1880's
The loft extension is a very good idea. I think you can adapt an attic door and extend you loft for more storage. If you decide on a staircase for later. It does not have to be right where the loft is. You have many possibilities by considering creating a walk way from the staircase to the loft. Creating spaces for not just storage but for other uses.
SHAWN & OUR CALI !!! I think OUR CALI is getting older and is enjoying the sunlight and the coolness of the little bit of breeze from the draft in the door!!! Not saying it is drafty it is sometimes it holds what a PUPPY NEEDS for their body and the sunlight is hitting her head and warming it nicely !!! All in All it is COMFORT FOR HER !!! The bed the chair haha and the doors !!! Will be hers as OUR CALI gets older GRACEFULLY !!!
Oh lucky you Shawn James and Cali, as here over the UK we are on Snow and Ice warnings for this coming week as the North Winds doth blow down from the Artic and cover our land in more of the white stuff. Oh well sooner it comes the quicker we can look forward to Spring. Cheers mate and Woof to Cali.
Personally, I think a traditional attic ladder would be best for your cabin… fold it into the ceiling when not in the loft, unfold it into the hall wall when you need to get up there…fantastic looking cabin all around…thank you for sharing your life with us😊
There is also a ladder that can be constructed along the wall. That folds up towards the wall, to be out of the way. And pull into place when needed. If you have the space. But if you have the space, and want to use your wall for a wall stairway, it could be a storage or shelving too. Lots of possibilities.
I've noticed on a lot of these off grid channels, they are not burning their wood stoves anywhere near their potential. Those stoves are meant to be fired up - hot. I had a wood stove I a very old huge two story cabin and though yes you'll get some sewit doing that- that's how they are made to burn during extremely cold frigid temperatures. Had I burned mine like they do, I'd froze to death out there in the middle of nowhere. Stoke that fire up and it will definitely heat that cabin up with no problem. Best wishes.
Shaun how about a library ladder setup and then build handrails on top of that load bearing beam? I think making the steps on the ladder deeper will also help with balance. I hope that helps with safety and usability. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
I've seen people with tiny homes that have a loft use a makeshift staircase that is maybe 5-6 steps total but just taller steps so it doesn't stretch out too far and they are able to use the area underneath for storage and such and still maintain their space. I think starting a little ways out from the current window and working your way up where you have the headroom to be standing fully upright once you get up to the loft and then step in.
Wow Really cool floor ur home is stunning Shawn Hello Cali daddy baby 🐾🐾🤗royal . Ruff winter all around the world sad earthquake blessings to the world . Amen.
You really should consider making the bathroom off the bedroom. You could use the space for more seating especially if you have your family and friends staying with you. Make bookshelves in that space too.
There is also a product called a scissor step. They come in different width and can be custom made for your needs. They are aluminum ladders that are used in campers and tiny houses. Not sure if the price. But it might be a product you might be interested in.
You could have been done last summer if you didn't record everything... but glad you did. What an amazing place. Bugs are coming soon, and I sense another screen room so your wife can visit longer :)
Glad to see new video from you and Cali and to see you are both doing well. I like the floor choice and I have been thinking about the safety of the basement opening . Just an idea , what about a door hinged to the inside of the breezeway that would become a 1/2 wall when opened and it could have a slide bolt to lock it upright for strength to the interior wall and a pulley close to the wall to assist opening and closing when needed.
Looking great Shawn Love that brick floor , Agree wit Lusaks on the lader to the loft issue . If you did it that way it wouldnt be an issue for anyone going up into the loft.
REARLLY enjoying watching your your terrific skills come together in the build...AS ALWAYS!!. Have you thought about putting a LAYER of SAND over the TILEBRICK. This will stop the rubbing/crunching, and pack the bricks much tighter, and cut out any movement!!. Hope this helps. God Bless you and the Family.
Have the ladder against the wall where the roof peak is. You or guests would be climbing up and stepping into the loft at the highest part of the roof. In addition if you make the board "railing" a log railing with a log upright from the loft floor all the way to the peak where the ladder goes up to the loft it makes the ladder much safer to get onto or off of. That's what we did at our family log cabin, and it worked fairly well for us.
I wonder if you will get the outdoor kitchen and the bedroom addition on this year? But I know your wanting to get your sauna done at some point too so will be interesting to see what you tackle this year. And of coarse all the work getting all your garden areas started and the green house as well. So ALOT of work to come with the arrival of spring coming soon. So hard to believe it's March already and first day of spring March 20th. We've got a beautiful week ahead this week in western NC USA in the mid 70's and sunny but I've got my ureter tube kidney reconstruction surgery Wednesday and back home Thursday and hopefully can get out and enjoy the weather and hopefully the sunny vitamin D will make me feel better. Have a productive good safe week Shawn and everyone else as well.
Just an idea only thing about it would be its something used in new homes...talking about a folding ladder used to get in the attic maybe modify it to look old style... Just an idea n ladder would be out of the way....I enjoy what u do...
get your hands on an attic folding stairway ... they fold up and sit above your head ... you pull the cord and down they come fresh to climb up easy even Cali could do it ... and when not needed fold em up and push up and now they are out of the way ... the only times you need that access is to get into or out of bed ...after that its closed ...
Perhaps a set of railings would help in the loft entrance? Really love the wall bricks in mud room floor just concerned they are too thin and may crack, very important to keep your flooring flat and level but I am positive you made sure it’s level and square.
Shawn ; What about a folding ( attic ladder) that's what we call it in my neck of the woods that way you can keep it out of your way, by deciding where to put it 🤔 or mount it

Yes, like others have stated, a Bessler staircase, although made by yourself, would accomplish your needs here. Or you could go fancy with a spiral staircase. In that case you'd have to swap walls for the bookcase to what is now your entry side.
Such a nice watch the mud-brick part and the design things of the kitchen the window at the side with the basement. I believe the basement is your cellar and the greenhouse???
Fire safety ...If you are going to use the loft for a second sleeping area, even if not used often, the ladder must be extended all night plus some time during the day for guests. Fire safety and night relief trips would require the ladder to be in a down position without blocking the bathroom entrance or the future bedroom door. You may need to think of a different entrance... maybe where you put that step up across the hallway, rather than on the loft side wall. If it is just for storage then there are several ideas suggested from a wall mount ladder to a spring loaded up-down stairs which would suffice.
Have you seen those tiny house steps that are storage cubes. You build cubes aka cubbies that are actually the steps to lofts. Since its gonna be used part-time the shorter ones could be placed on top of the other cubbies🤔👍🏼😉
Do you not have to glue the floor bricks down and then fill in the gaps in-between the bricks? Otherwise, any moisture you bring in from the outside will seep into the sheet-rock underneath and dissolve it.
I was curious about that too. With the brick tiles as they are they will be prone top breaking because of the movement. I used to do a lot of brick paving which is very similar, we used to broom/sweep fine sand over the pavers so it falls into all the cracks and stabilises the bricks/pavers, you then just sweep off the excess and the sand remains between the bricks...

I haven't read other comments. What it you have a platform above the window resting on this two large beams. You can then attach the ladder to the platform. So then have it lift up in between the two beams level to the loft floor into storage. So when it's down on the floor your looking out the window with the skin curtain when climbing. Oh and then use a rope or cable to lift it back up level in between the large beams. Hopefully if this isn't a good idea someone else might have a better idea.
You could build a spring loaded retractable ladder for the loft, like one of those pull down attic ladders.

you need to make a retractable ladder like those used to get into attics...WOW actually using a modern tool in the cabin
Maybe a narrow spiral staircase? just a thought.
For your loft , make a hinged stairs to use ,up when not needed and down when it is.
@Shawn James you have a spammer.
good idea and takes care of the problem of tight places.
Such a nice watch the mud-brick part and the design things of the kitchen the window at the side with the basement.
I believe the basement is your cellar and the greenhouse???
You should make a hatch door. Then you will gain floor space. Just a thought. Fan.
I wonder if attic door with ladder would be a good solution for your loft area. It can be put away when your not using it and maybe safer way to up.
Well we had the same idea!! And I didn’t see your comment before I wrote mine!!😳😉
Fire safety ...If you are going to use the loft for a second sleeping area, even if not used often, the ladder must be extended all night plus some time during the day for guests. Library style rolling ladder!!
Do you not have to glue the floor bricks down and then fill in the gaps in-between the bricks? Otherwise, any moisture you bring in from the outside will seep into the sheet-rock underneath and dissolve it.
You could frame in an attic ladder that can be raised out of the way when not in use. I have one in my garage and I have seen them used in camps.
You are doing a great job ! Looking great . Are you going to cement the bricks down or just free lay them ?
I was curious about that too. With the brick tiles as they are they will be prone top breaking because of the movement. I used to do a lot of brick paving which is very similar, we used to broom/sweep fine sand over the pavers so it falls into all the cracks and stabilises the bricks/pavers, you then just sweep off the excess and the sand remains between the bricks...
Definitely need a steel ladder with cage, blacken the steel.
Possibly even decorative wrought iron.
Since the loft is not to be used a lot , have you considered a ladder that you hang on the wall when not in use so it doesn't take up floor space. They can be attached to loft when needed. Stairs that go along side the wall also take up less room. Just a thought. Great program . Thanks
