- The first of a four part series on how to keep your feet warm while winter backpacking. In part one, we explore what are the best boot and sock options and why it is important to have different boots and socks for camp for what you wear while hiking.
"Proper boots" are different for everyone. Many factors such as what they will be used for and where you are hiking and temperatures.
In this video, I show you what I used for boots and socks and my friend from Thunder Bay Canada we are in a colder snowier climate.

Not sure if you mis-spoke, but the Toe/Hand/Body warmers should NOT be worn against the skin! I believe it says that on the package. Burn hazard. Enjoy!
Thanks for the wonderful and flattering introduction Jeremy. Stay warm out there :)
There has to be a way to use a tiny pump as..like a hair dryer to heat up boots/shoes in the morning, using something as simple as a piece of like...small dryer tubing. Something that won't melt or burn, that allows you to direct heat from a stove or something. Yeah.
I worked on the flightline at Ellsworth AFB SD from 1976-1980. Winters were, as expected, extremely cold down to -25F. Mukluks were the way to go. Regular combat boots, even with wool socks, we’re just too cold. But after getting issued mukluks, my feet were never cold again. Even wore them while pheasant hunting in eastern SD. Happy Holidays
Not many can say they go "DOWN to Ely, Minnesota." Great stuff from Toots.
Those foot warmers should not be put right next to the skin. They can get hot enough to burn your skin. They are meant to be adhered to the outside of your socks.
I would not sleep with them directly on skin. If they get to hot I take them off. They don't work well through thick socks for me. Thank you!
Great tips. I’ve worked outside my whole life and it’s always hard to keep your feet warm and dry. And it’s even harder in the woods. Appreciate the tips from you and toots. Really cool 👍
The man! The myth! The legend! TOOTS!! 🤘🏼😜 a lot of good info! Great video!
Great information for keeping your feet warm and healthy. Thanks for sharing.
I looked up Muttluks.🤦🏼♀️ 😄
Great information. Love this video 👍
It’s crazy to still hear people recommending tight fitting boots. There is so much information available now about the damage that does. Mukluks are amazing
two cents toots on boots
Lots of good info. Thanks.
Fantastic, informative video! I had forgotten about mukluks.
Thank you. This is very informative. My feet are fine when I'm moving but quickly get cold standing around camp, and you offer a good solution. Have you every tried down booties that are made for standing around camp? I'm giving those a try this winter. They're lighter and more packable than the hunting boots.
I do have down booties now. I just use them while sleeping. The down will compress on the bottom while standing and the bottoms of your feet will not be insulated. Thanks for watching.
Toots in Boots. 😂 😆 😝. Now I’m going to need to swing over to Ely and pick up a pair myself!
Miyagi on the Trail RPelton1 and I said the same thing. 😀
Can you tell me, if I am correct. You have 14 size, when normaly you have 11,5 size of boots? And double wide not regular size - is it ok for you, it is not too big? Is your feet smal, fit or wide? I dont know what kind of mode should I buy - regular - wide - double wide? So I'm looking for addvice.
If you contact Steger, they can give you all sorts of advice. I am normally a 14EE so for the Arctic mukluks(just like Toots') and where I intended to go with them, and they recommended a 15 WW (double wide.)
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Steger mukluks are the best!👍
Good info. Appreciate it
been eyeing on mukluks boot someday...
I am doing a mukluks video in a few weeks.
