@@theobot2000 I'd love to see that too, but it's unlikely. This has been upscaled from the DVD, but there's no DVD version of TMWRNJ, and the only publicly-available copies are all poor-quality - I think they've been sourced from RealVideo, if you can remember that.
Now I think about it, back in 1995 I did feel disgusted, disenfranchised and disenchanted with the hollow vacuum of modern life. But nothing could have prepared me for 2024.
Watching this and seeing Kevin Eldon back then, 30 years ago, and what he looks like now in 2024, i think he must have a painting in his attic that looks like an older version of himself.
I was at a Richard Herring gig in a small hall about 15 years ago. He mentioned that the weirdest heckle he ever received was: "Your hair looks like it’s a hairnet." For some reason, that stuck with me.
I love Stew - but he couldn't be the comedian Stewart Lee when he was young. I saw him in around 2001 and he was still not old enough to be "that", he had to wait till he'd let himself go and the sands of time had ground him down physically and mentally into the beloved wreck of today :)
This justifies the existence of the internet, all by itself. Apart from Stu & Rich, there's Kevin Eldon - an unsung hero of British comedy...with a calculator watch 😂
Wow, proper nostalgia! Also shout out to young Kate Ashfield (Liz out of Shaun of the Dead) at the end of episode 1.. Also young Al Murray at the beginning of ep.2..
Peter Baynham should be on the secondary syllabus. Remembering Peter Baynham helped me to sort out my personal hygiene as a youth. Come to think of it, does anyone think he (the character) has a learning disability?
Do you remember "Dare to Believe"? No one else does, I think I might have imagined it and every one I told about it at the time also thought I imagined it but it has to be real. Although, I did enjoy shouting out Dare to Believe catchphrases at people who just shouted out Fast Show catchphrases to be funny instead of you know, being funny, because I hate people like that, and then watching their confusion at having every time they said "only me" answered back with a "you, in the second half, be better at football" or an "Aguar Moose" and them not knowing what the sweaty frick was happening. It would somehow be funnier in retrospect if I DID imagine it, than it was quoting a less popular sketch show that really existed.
Thank you very much for doing this, all the version I'd had stumbled upon thus far seemed even smaller than 144p somehow... Any plans on giving TMWRNJ the same treatment?
Thanks so much for this! Looks fantastic and just as funny as I remember. Don't suppose you'd have a way of doing The Mary Whitehouse Experience as well would you? :D
I loaded it into the software and told it to do certain things which amount to magic. Then the PC whirred for a day or so and out popped this little beauty.
I'm from the US, so I don't know this show at all. But I'm a Stuart Lee fan, and it seems fitting that he would have this kind of show in his youth. It's like how Jon Stewart got his start on MTV in the US. It's an odd, but endearing, start for both of them - assuming Stuart doesn't have something predating even this. He doesn't does he?
I forgot that young Lee and Herring were a snooker player and a deck chair.
