Darkest Dungeon 2 implies it's equally dark to the original, hence it's name "Darkest Dungeon too"
This is an acceptable compromise.
It's "Darkest Dungeon II" though. Clearly, this is the *second* Darkest Dungeon. Silver medal on the darkness front.
It's not even a dungeon.
Can't wait till Darkest Dungeon As Well comes out.
I thought it was “Darkest Dungeon To” and then it’s just too dark to read the rest.
Hi jon , i was wandering, are you gonna make a series with dragon age 2 or inquisition ? cause i just watched your origins series and it was amazing brother
Dismas' real hero goal is to team up with Reynauld again.
The road not taken is actually a good poem I recommend checking it out
Think more people would like it if it wasn't mandatory reading in elementary school, at least were I am
a lot of people misinterpret it too because of its status as required reading, the entire point is there was negligible differences between the two paths and that he was justifying his decision to himself
@@gaiamission7200also he wrote the poem to mock another poet friend who constantly struggled with simple decisions.
The poem is often misinterpreted completely wrong, as the true moral is “who cares which path you take loser, hurry up and make a decision.”
I think thats one of the best fun facts ever
Bit of a preview on Xcom with commentary on turn based combat.
I what MORE
SERIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, the name implies that plague doctor identifies as a male now, so get over it, everyone! Jon clearly was able to spot this minor detail with his incredible perception.
Pssst…nobody tell Jon that Paracelsus is a girl.
BaCkStOrY BaCkStOrY BaCkStOrY
Maybe by darkest dungeon 3 he'll stop misgendering the poor plague doctor. There's hoping.
You act like it's obvious and not a common mistake. There's not a lot that indicates it, not saying there isn't anything, but it's not exactly easy to tell right off the bat.
If that's the worst thing his low perception puts her through she'll get off pretty easy to be fair
You needed to attack the tap root with your Plague Doctor and Grave Robber once the vines start to drop. Each attack on the tap root will result in a vine withdrawing. Use the Highway Man and Man at Arms to attack the General. Luckily the Plague Doctor's Grenade will hit both the tap root and the General to help things along on both fronts. One more thing: it is standard that you need the head of a region lair boss affixed to your wagon, otherwise, you cannot approach the main boss at the end of the Act. However, this does not apply to the first two region denial boss. You can forego obtaining a head in the Tangle and Sprawl and still complete Act 1.
I love that Jon’s perception will NEVER change. The strangling stopped/decreased when he was doing AoE attacks.
"Well, I tried attacking the root, but that didn't do anything. It's not all bad news though, Dismas just got over being strangled!"
It seems any attack on the Tap Root (AoE included) causes a random party member to be targetted by "The Growth Recedes" which causes Tangled Growth's progress to be set back to 1. Level 3 Tangled Growth being what causes the Strangled malus. Absolutely not Jon's fault for not figuring this out, it took me almost to the end of the fight to figure all that out.
Shoot. The glaass.
So... you are roleplaying the unseen controller who stays in the stagecoach at all times. When your team dies horribly, it's just a case of "round up another four suckers", rather than restarting from scratch. Must be an employer's market.
Jon's problem with these fights is his inability to read all the symbols, stats, and effects in play. The time his guard didn't give him defense, his man at arms was debuffed with "unable to gain defense". He didn't bother to see what that trap symbol on the boss meant, he isn't paying attention when enemies are guarding each other, and he doesn't pay attention to blight and bleed resist chances near enough. But of course, that is what makes it all so entertaining! It wouldn't be MATN if there wasn't an element of panic.
Yeah, being observant isn't really his thing.
Jon's perception aside, I'd still be just as lost with the amount of status conditions in this game. I tried playing the first one and was completely lost with everything going on.
@@snazzyfeathers I can see that being a thing. They probably should implement some kind of codex page explaining the myriad of effects that can occur really.
@@skitkjell85 There IS a handy reference, but the game sort of slides it in a quick tutorial message that's easy to miss:
Hold down Ctrl and a whole reference sheet shows up telling you what each effect does. Granted, it doesn't cover non-combat stuff (such as the party items you use at the inns for example) but at least you won't be scratching your head at 'what does this ability give me again?'
The Darkness believes in a thing called love. And guitars.
We do not speak of it...
Well Jon, I'm not sure about the second but equally dark installment of this dungeon, but in the first one we actually have a pretty good understanding of what happened, Dismas ancestor discovered this horrible Cthulhu-esque monstrosity and released it onto the world (or merged with it). Tho you would only know that if you made it through to the end, which I didn't, because bloody hell, was that dungeon dark, tho not darker than this one, presumably, as the name implies.
The ancestor is your (the player) ancestor. Not Dismas.
I played this when it first entered early access. It looks like they've added a lot of cool stuff. Also the General is really hard to figure out the first time. As I recall you can't kill the tap root but attacking it causes the roots to pull back some, so you can unstrangle your characters. Also I think there's some background dialogue that implies that you did this to the world in the first game by going into the darkest dungeon.
Is the thief named Dismas? Someone who worked on this game was a big ol' Christian mythology nerd.
The starting character highwayman in darkest dungeon 1 was also Dismas and it's heavily implied he's the actual main character whose ancestor is responsible for all the horrible events that took place.
Yup. And the crusader you start with in the first is named Reynauld, or more accurately, Raynald. The flagellant is named Damian, and the Plague Doctor, as you can see, is named Paracelsus, who's considered the father of toxicology. Lots of fun references in these two games.
Damn, they really improved the looks and animations of the game, very cool
Dude it looks like shit. The original style is so much better. Cheap anime looking animations.
Ong Jon called the plague doctor a he, literally unwatchable now
Pretty sure the real Darkness is indeed all the horrible things that happen to you in the setting.
"Or maybe, darkness is in the eye of the beholder!" Just got back from fact checking, beholder's don't have darkness eyes. You're welcome.
I think we may be witnessing the first ever "road-like" game...I'll show myself out
I don't know if John knows this, but he needs to hit the root to make the vines go away.
Spell his name correctly
Mis-gendering the Plague Doctor right off the bat? Not off to a good start. :P
She does have a pretty masculine form to be fair.
Wearing a mask and full body robes? Yeah, I wonder how anyone could "Mis-gender" that, or just not know. The only people who do know seem to be hip with the lore, so expecting new people to know is the weirder thing.
@@shorewall Or they notice (in both games) that she has breasts. Later on in the game (edit: in her personal story, IIRC, which Jon is going to absolutely adore), of course, it's stated outright, but it's obvious even before then.
@@ogrejd Men can have boobies too.
This type of game isn't my cuppa tea but I LOVE the art work.
Check out the original. The art style is so much better. This 3d shit looks terrible and cheap.
You get Ser Barristan as your man-at-arms? Probably the best knight there is.
Since in the books Ser Barristan is still alive and kicking ass he might still turn out to be THE Greatest Knight.
You have to complete act 4 to figure out exactly what happened but basically(spoilers ahead of course)
the player character and academic (the narrator) were colleagues and discovered the iron crown, a cultic symbol that many ancient civilizations used. The player character gets interested in this symbol and starts performing many cultic rituals, sacrificing the academic to release the cultists, turning the world to shit and ascending the player character to an eldritch god.
"Dismas can't do anything!
*hits taproot*
Oh, that didn't do anything. But dismas is ok! I don't know why though!"
Oh boy, never change Jon
less than two minutes in and he already missed the fact that PD is a lady... and somehow set up the optimal lineup for the starting party.
Does the Plague Doctor being a lady factor into the game at all?
@@shorewall not at all, I just found it funny. It's a lot more obvious during her shrine events is all
Oh cool. I always wanted Jon to play more Darkest Dungeon.
The dungeon traversal is so much easier to follow! I always found the progression in DD1 to be so frustrating.
Small thing: you repeatedly refer to the Plague Doctor as a he, but in actuality, the Plague Doctor is a she.
Lots of people fail to notice PD's figure, most of all Jon and his infamous-1 perception
As if it matters. I call my dogs both he and she, regardless of their sex, because it doesn't matter. And for the plague doctor, wearing a mask and robes in a game that doesn't value the individual characters, it matters even less.
Darkest Dungeon starting without best girl Vestal? How am I supposed to walk without my crutches?
Guilt, loathing, failure, regret, disgrace. Oh, so this game is about my life, then. Cool
As someone who played a lot of the original I really appreciated that the "True darkness is the friends who died along the way." line. Far too accurate statement for the first game.
Having played the first game for over 100 missions, the amount of animations in this game is somewhat uncanny.
Still a good game but my brain feels wierd.
Yes! I’ve been looking forward to this.
You didn’t get block when you guarded grave robber because the drummers mark skill prevented it.
He was able to block while marked later in the run.
Darkest Dungeon: Taking care of the problem in your backyard
Darkest Dungeon 2: Oh god, the problem has spread out beyond and we need to deal with it
I think you conquered the original darkest dungeon so it doesn't exist anymore. That means this is the new darkest dungeon. They can both be the darkest of their time, but they just don't exist at the same time.
As someone who is a classicist, a person who by default read a lot as an education, Jon really need to read the tooltips.
Wont lie, i fully expected today's video to be about CK3s new DLC since I've seen others get their hands on it already
if you clear out the darkest dungeon, does it remain either dark or a dungeon
'darkest' cannot be a fixed title
If you clear out the darkest dungeon it becomes a tourist attraction and all the locals get really annoyed about it.
You gotta manage your stress levels, Jon. Meltdowns are bad. Prevent meltdowns. More DD2 please!
Like this video for the friends we lost along the way
Jon: Any attacks on the pillager is gonna be redirected to the dog, so now they both functionally have dodge, that's too bad.
Jon, seconds later: My attack that bypasses dodge can only hit the pillager, not the dog. That's too bad, I guess I better use something else.
Jon's perception is not good, he still has -2 perception, one game I would really love to see a playthrough on for Jon is something like Pathfinder Kingmaker or Wrath of the Righteous.
Although come on Jon when you hit the taproot the growth receded, what you needed to do was target the taproot with the Plague Doctor and Graverobber with the Man at Arms and the Rogue guy basically doing the damage on the general, cause I feel like the first game has a lot of similarities to this one and every boss can have unique mechanics.
I feel like though the -2 perception would really hit Jon in an Isometric RPG game because so many of those games just provide way too many options that even a guy like me who enjoys that many options can struggle to know the best strategies for winning fights.
Thanks for showing off this game. I was wondering how it differed from the first Darkest Dungeon.
This dungeon is not as dark as the darkest dungeon, it's the second darkest dungeon.
A little tip I learned way too late... If you are fighting ordained enemies (the enemies with the grey crown icon) you can hold alt to open the examination screen, and THEN mouse over the ordainment icon and it will tell you what the ordainment actually does for that enemy
It's a bit of a shame, I liked the first game very much, but this one just doesn't click with me.
I feel like Jon, gets stuck on attacking the enemy in the first position or like focusing down on one enemy too much. Like if the bosses play in the same way as in the first game, there is always a strategy involved. Clearly, I think for the Dreaming General, you are supposed to keep hitting at the tap root so that it stops growing. I also noticed that like with the drummer skeleton he wasn't really targeting it with his ranged characters when he could have. Its all super entertaining, but he definitely could have managed these fights a lot better.
Jon we need an Age of Wonders 4 episode titled "I said maybe..."
the original game was better in every way, especially art, mood and animation
If you liked darkest dungeon 2 i think you would like Battle Brothers
What do people think of the second game? I love the first one but this looks not as good to me 🤔
Nice animations but the UI doesn't feel right.
looks good, but I really prefer the 2d art.
I will not rest… shadows of doubt please
It's the same dungeon, but different enterences.
Plague Doctor is female, not a he.
Does it matter in the game?
@@shorewall Jon has historically cared about getting in game character pronouns right when commentating.
@@ericsanford536 Kind of weird how defensive I notice a bunch of people here get when pointing this out. They really, really don't like it. Very strange.
How does it compare to tiny folks?
The PlayStation RUclips app is removing/filtering your resident evil videos, the most recent video displaying was "Help will come soon" from 4 days previous.
I've noticed them doing that on a lot of your fallout videos as well. They'll publish the bloody mess, but then censor it on your channel. Just sharing the info.
Damn, the 3D models probably mean my potato won't be able to run this game.
My PC is not very good but it runs it fine. The only thing is some slowdown on the stagecoach riding portions but overall, it's a pretty efficient game.
yes my bed time video to fall asleep too.
not even 5 minutes in and i'm already wanting to scream at the screen for putting Highwayman at the 4th position.
imo, he's best at 2nd or 3rd position. (definitely 2nd starting position once you unlock Point Blank Shot)
I'd completely forgotten that DD is basically a torch simulator with turn-based rpg elements.
The action order is not random.
'I've just watched the tutorial'
*puts highwayman in position 4*
*internal screaming*
This is final fantasy 1330
Play shadows of doubt
So now the first Darkest Dungeon is now the second-darkest dungeon, while the second Darkest Dungeon is _the_ darkest dungeon.
Slime mold is delish tho
Jon after seeing this i think you kight be interested in Gloomhaven digital. Would be a good livestream game!
🔥❤️🔥
10/10 for the description of the video, Jon xD
Kinda saw this coming... the RNG hates you in this game. I think I might be getting this one 🤔.
Well that is livestream content right there
Please tell me this is going to be a live stream
I was rooting for harold there
nive
Sooooooo keep playing this
Love this game
Would love to see you play more of this!
Maybe it’s the same dungeon with new and different laws of physics demanding that it hold itself to the modern standard of graphics?
That way, it’s the same original (accept no substitutes) ‘Darkest Dungeon’. It’s just now had another game made about it.
Like going to Skyrim in ESO improves the look of the world; and changes the physiology of the Khajiit.
My take on the title: it's the second most darkest dungeon, they just messed up the order!
Everyone's crying and bleeding out and being strangled to death, the boss still has half their health, and half your party dies before you get the opportunity to do anything... Yep, that's Darkest Dungeon alright.
Day 1034 of requesting Zoo Tycoon. I like to imagine that this game, Dredge, and Dead Space all trace the history of one incredibly unlucky family line that just can't seem to catch a break. Which of the road trip buddies is the ancestor of the robot toaster is up to you as an audience
It's sooooo frustrating to see Jon NOT get the mechanics of a fight right! Hahahaha!
I kind of miss the old artstyle on the characters, but those animations are definately a step up. Can't wait to die over and over again!
The doctor is a lady......................
Great game. Only thing is as cool as their 2D style is it does have some draw-backs compared to 3D.
Have you thought about being sponsored by Step One pants? I say it a lot myself at work and at home, because you have to have a plan, but . . . "Right then. . Step one" could be your catchphrase ❤
OMG, this is as bad as a D&D gets.
I want to thank Jon for saving me so much money by not buying any of these crap fests he tries out here.
Your the best, Buddy.
the fuck are you talking about, it looks great, the entire point is to imbue in the player the kind of dread lovecraftian horror imbues in the reader, its difficulty isnt unbalanced its purposeful
@@gaiamission7200 Your a child, act your age. Oh Wait, you are.
Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
shoot the tap root! shoot the bloody root 😅
The game has lost a lot of the appeal from game1
You don't stick around to actually care for the characters as they will get disposed after 2-3 hours regardless whether you fail or succeed.
The progression for a roguelike is horrible. 2-3 hours for +0,05 % deathblow resist gain on one character - woohooo ... oh wait
It is no surprise the reviews for the game are sinking (and fast) on steam
I'm only 16 minutes in and I'm dazed or lost or something. I was sure you were going to compare the gameplay or something I came to think as Many A True Nerd review. It is a enjoyable shock. Bravo.
