    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад

      Unfortunately I have no idea… I’m still new to these units. Could there but a bit of dust or grit blocking it? Try compressed air, then try a full reset (I think I saw that option in the C.Fn settings). If still no, is it under warranty or new enough to just return?

    • @EricSnissaert
      @EricSnissaert 5 лет назад +1

      @@photojoseph Thanks Joseph! I already reset the system, but that didn't handle the issue. The dail works perfectly with the other settings, so nothing wrong with the dail itself. I hope it's a software issue. I bought these flashes already some time ago via AliExpress, but only recently I started to get serious and needed to get familiar with the different settings. I'll check for firmware update and/or contact Godox and ask those guys overthere. Thanks for your support!

    The little port in the side is for their FTR/XTR -16 receivers, which were required for the first generation of the flashes, but will still offer more groups if you need them on the current models. Also try any other of the transmitters, the xt1 is fickle and annoying to use. XT-16 is manual only but really easy to adjust, X-Pro triggers are really nice but have some odd design elements, and there’s the new Adorama X-Pro-2 (R2 Pro mk 2, not released yet for m43). I also really like the v350 for its size for travel or just as a backup flash/trigger and the ad200 as it has 3-4x the power of a normal flash of roughly the same size, can also switch heads, and even has a unit to combine 2 into a single 400ws strobe.

    Hello from Germany! As always, thank you very much for another informative video. I generally avoid carrying a flash because I like to work with ambient light, and i don't like being dependent upon yet another piece of kit - especially when travelling. I am finding more and more that I'll need to pick some of these up, specifically for the automotive photography I've been doing in lower light situations, and because my new G9 lacks an in-body flash. The radio functionality looks like it will be very helpful in that I would also be using these to back-light a subject where line-of-sight isn't available. I think more compelling than anything else is the price point; being able to buy nearly 3-to-1 when compared to the Panasonic DMW-FL580L.

    Great overview, Joseph.
    Question: I already have 3 Yongnuo flashes (Canon). Will the Godox controller trigger those correctly (TTL not manual) from my GH5?

  • @davefoc
    @davefoc Год назад

    Thank you for this video. I have been mired in frustration trying to figure out how to set up this flash (mine is for a Canon) and your video was greatly appreciated. Things I learned:
    1. The pin on the hot shoe that goes up and down. The flash was connected to a flash holder that clamped on the hot shoe. I had trouble getting the flash in and it was even more difficult to detach the flash. The only thing that seemed to work was cursing coupled with some focused jiggling. That worked but turning the knob works without the cursing. Very nice.
    2. The color of the screen indicating master or slave. Very nice. I had not figured that out and it was very nice to know.
    3. Check the version. That seems like a good idea.
    4. The camera brand that its for is shown as an initial beside the model number.
    5. How to more reliably get to the function I wanted. I had some success with random button pushing but my mind just works differently than the people that designed this interface and I wasn't figuring out how to navigate this interface reliably.
    6. Rotating head. I didn't know that.
    ETA:
    7. The build in hood and dispersing lens need to be completely pushed back in to get the zoom to work. I guessed that it might be something like that but I didn't realize they need to pushed back so as to click into place for the zoom to work.
    A couple of differences I noted with your Olympus version
    1. Mine has an FEB option in place of a blank on your flash
    2. Mine says ETTL instead of TTL. My guess is that both cameras use ETTL and the firmware is just a bit different on the two flashes with regard to that.
    Question: Does optical trigger mode require the flash not be in manual mode?
    What I want to do: optically trigger a Westcott strobe or optically trigger the Godox flash from a Wescott strobe. I don't have time to mess with that today but based on what I learned from this video I think there is a chance I'll get that to work. Thanks again.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  Год назад

      I'm glad you learned so much! The difference between TTL and ETTL is just what these manufacturers call it. "TTL" is "through the lens", and adding the "E" is for "Evaluative" - it's the same thing. Optical triggers are just dumb triggers. They see a burst of light, and they trigger. Doesn't matter what mode the triggering light is in. However for the light that's being triggered, it can only be in manual mode. There's no communication back to the camera.

    • @davefoc
      @davefoc Год назад

      @@photojoseph Thanks for the response. You have become part of a small journey for me to become more familiar with flashes. I have used flashes for a long time as part of my macro photography hobby, however anything beyond setting it to either ETTL or Manual was just a mystery of weird lingo and options that I didn't understand.
      A few comments on your comment:
      1. I have a Pixel 800C flash and was learning to use that last night as well. When I set the camera to optical slave mode it became obvious what was going on. It displays the letters SL which made me realize that it is just follows a flash from a master flash. The flashes are very similar in functionality but I found the Pixel 800 more intuitive. The Godox designers really like their hidden methods to navigate their options. I tried to get back to the place with the S1 and S2 option on my own and I couldn't do it. I'll need to watch your video again on that.
      2. I did come across the distinction that you mention between ETTL and TTL. However, I think the more authoritative sources indicate that they are different technologies. TTL just gets exposure information from the camera. With ETTL the cameral fires off a preflash so as to judge the exposure for itself. Article on the subject: cameragroove.com/ettl-vs-ttl/ Please correct me if I have said something incorrect on this.

Turns out that if you were using the diffuser/bounce card and didn't press them back in ALL THE WAY, the zoom will not function. I pressed down and to move them all the way back into the flash and now the zoom function works again-yeah!

    When i take the photo, the flash is lightning but the result is totaly dark as if the flash was firing just before ou just after the shot. As i am in manual mode , there couldn't be any preflash on the camera. I tried with S2 mode, it's the same.
    The normal mode (>1/250s) is working nicely in off flash as the highspeed when flash on the camera.

    I was wondering if there was any advantage over using these to the Hahnel’s. I use a Hahnel Modi’s 600, thinks it’s great. But I also use Elinchrom strobes in studio and externally (ELB500’s) and occasionally need the Hahnel as a fill or separation light. I have to use it with a receiver or optically or sync cord, all separately from the Skyport trigger. Bit of a bind, would the Godoy sync with the Skyport trigger through the camera flash setting?

    Are there any restrictions in functionality when using this flash with a Lumix G9 (especially the AF support in darkness due to the flash’s infrared light)? Can you use the HSS when the camera is in „A“ mode?
    Would you (still) recommend this flash over the Nissin i60a as a part of travel equipment and for the on-camera usage only?

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад +1

      Unaware of restrictions. I don’t typically use the IR light but I just tried to figure out how to turn that off, and I can’t find it. However… it isn’t evne coming on. Maybe these don’t have one? The remote trigger has one, with a physical switch to toggle it off evne. Am I being daft? To the other questions… HSS does work in A mode, and I don’t have any experience with the Nissin lights.

I don't need to have the same godox for the camera model to work on slave, correct? meaning that if i have an Olympus camera with a godox triger mounted on the Olympus i can have a godox flash for sony mount and one for canon mount and still work on radio trigger, Right? as long it is all within godox 2.4g capabilities! am i right?

      Yes, but this came in a firmware update. I don't know what version and even if that applies to all models, but before you get started I'd recommend checking the firmware on each piece of gear. Does it have slow sync flash? I am a newbie to flash and have a Panasonic GX8 camera. At the moment comparing the Nissin i60A and the Godox v860ii. Difficult to make a choice.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад

      Slow sync is a function of the camera not the flash, so yes, you can do that. I haven’t used the Nissin but one of the great advantages of the Godox is being able to mix their studio and small strobes from the same wireless trigger. Check our all my Godox videos; go here and type “Godox” into the search field: photojoseph.com/tips/hardware

    Hey Joseph, I got a question for you. Does your photos turn out to have some some parts not showing? As in it acts like it's not in HSS when going at 2000ss, , 4000, 5000, etc. when the flash power is lower than say 1/4 of the power? It's happening to my G9 when using the Godox AD200 at 2000ss at lower than 1/4 of the flash power.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад

      I haven’t run into that. That indicates the shutter and flash aren’t in sync. So your flash is in High Speed Sync mode, the camera is at 1/2000s shutter speed, and the flash is on manual at ¼ power?

    • @JericTamayo
      @JericTamayo 5 лет назад

      @@photojoseph Yes. And still see the black banding at the bottom, which most likely means the shutter isn't closing fast enough. When doing the same settings on my GH4, it's perfectly exposed everywhere, no banding with the same flash and remote.

    • @photojoseph
      @photojoseph  5 лет назад

      Sounds like a Godox issue to me. I’d definitely reach out to them. When you’re over 1/250th s (the normal max sync speed), you enter HSS or high speed sync. You aren’t talking about a single flash; it’s actually hundreds (thousands?) of micro pulses. Which means if they’re out of sync, you’ll get banding or other anomalies. This video explains it: ruclips.net/video/4Ckih3dtdsQ/видео.html

    • @TillSeyfarth
      @TillSeyfarth 5 лет назад

      @@photojoseph I've been waiting for the Panasonic + Godox / Flashpoint HSS synch issue to be fixed before buying into the system. HSS works with Olympus bodies and "older" Lumix cameras. The issue is present at least for the G85, G5 and G9. It's pretty obvious that Panasonic changed something, possibly when they introduced the new shutter mechanism (which solved the shutter-shock issues previous models sometimes suffered from). Please take this Panasonic problem seriously - your video talks about HSS with Lumixes as if it's simply working, no word about the well-known banding issues. When it's brought to your attention in the comments, why don't you try to reproduce it? The fact that only newer Lumixes suffer from the issue makes it a camera problem, not a Godox problem. Get in touch with Panasonic perhaps? Thanks!
