Honestly I don't mind telemetry as long as I have an option up front opt in or out of it. Just don't hide it. However, as someone in the cyber world, I would never use Manjaro, simply because of the decisions on how they manage packages from Arch and their lack of thought put into any decent security practices.
@cyco_nix could you elaborate on the security practices. I know about some weird wonky stuff they do but I’d like to know which things you are referring to
Telemetry - KDE had similar telemetry collection for years, and even though it is quite conservative, with the user having to select the amount of data shared (with "none" being an option) - KDE folks, especially Nate Graham have complained multiple times that aside from tracking version adoption - that data is almost useless and doesn't tell them things they need to know to make the software better, such as: which options user turn on or off, how many times, using this app or other, how much time is spent in full screen apps vs windowed, etc. Nate has opined that even at the most liberal data collection setting (which looks a bit like what Manjaro are doing), if they knew what they know today - they probably wouldn't have added telemetry collection because it isn't worth the negative PR.
It's a real case of irony: people throw a fit about it for privacy reasons, yet when things don't work right, they throw another fit. It's like, in order to get anything done, people either need to ACTUALLY contribute code or at least give insight on what to code for (telemetry). Considering how many people are starting to move over to Linux, the vocal private people are going to become less and less loud over the buzzing of regular people who just want something that works and cannot write code nor care, and just leave things as is. That, and thank you companies like Google and Microsoft for basically making telemetry basically a 'bad thing' due to abusing it.
The thing is, I wouldn't mind real telemetry because I quite trust the KDE team. It's just that it should not be on by default. And yes, I'm aware you get into a problem where you only get stats from enthusiasts.
So then just... remove the telemetry? Don't get me wrong, I'm not some luddite who thinks all telemetry is bad just because it's being misused by the devil himself (microshit), but why do they have to keep it in if it's useless to them? Add to that that you gain PR points because you just removed a feature you admitted was useless. I don't understand this mentality that "once something is in here, it's here TO STAY (unless it's a very useful feature which will be gone by next update)" - the parentheses is only how corporations think I'm aware of that, I just had to air it out, it's so frustrating to me
@@xFluing a. Removing something still requires everyone to sign off on, possibly mute than adding things. And the PR boost from removing an unliked thing - that was there for years, minding its own business, is much less than the negative PR you got for introducing it - possibly no one will even notice.
That’s great but that’s not happening until about April 2025. I also don’t consider it changing of focus but more of an acknowledgment of the efforts for the KDE side of Fedora. Overall it’s great but the point about not being a mainstream default is still accurate. I suspect Fedora Workstation will be the first edition promoted on the download page after this change happens
That reminds me of that time when a certain orange distro had some deal witha certain shopping cart store, that deal required installing a tracking add-on in your install which was on by default and you had no say on the matter until you could finally log into your new install and remove it.
What you are recalling is not what happened. They didn’t send any data to Amazon directly, there were buffer servers, and they did not track anything which is why the results are so useless. It was a very dumb thing to do but it’s not what you said happened
Well I’m asking because right now we don’t know what their plan is but your comment about never opt out is why I asked. You can do both have it during install to ask permission and also technically be opt out so if you are okay with those things being done then the never be seems inaccurate
@@michael_tunnell to me making it opt out means you don't respect my privacy so why would I continue to use your system? Not that I would ever use Manjaro anyway but data collection is just another reason to not use it.
I think we are discussing two different things. You seem to be assuming opt out relates to hiding it. I am referring to what Ubuntu does. Ubuntu asks permission and shows what it would send on first install and gets user permission before doing it. There are two options to choose from, yes and no. In the case of Ubuntu they have yes selected by default which technically is an opt out but it meets all other criteria for being ethical which is why I’m saying opt out can be done properly
LX-Qt with Wayfire? Wayfire seems like it will be the Wayland equivalent of Compiz. Seems like a lot of potential there for one of the more minimal window managers
A lot of people say to just make copies in GIMP but non destructive is kind of counter intuitive in that way. There are not any “copies” but rather there is a single source layer and then everything on top is done by math computations so it’s incredibly flexible and efficient
Kool show. I'd be interested to know if GIMP is or will be an alternative for the Photoshop uloj. Regarding your question, yes please show us the games you like to play. We're also Steam fanboys, so we don't judge you. We've heard there are other ways to game on Linux, so we want to share the love. But sadly, we don't know what those other things are, so for those of you wanting to publish Linux games, if you would be so kind as to include a Steam version, so we don't have to take the time to learn what those other ones are and sign up for another thing, that would be great!
The Steam Game Recording is amazing. I use it since Beta and set to highest quality and 16 hours of recording in the background. xD It even marks every session start and end too, and by game title if you want. The markers are so cool, but I don't use them at the moment (need to get used to them). Unfortunately it does not work with every game.
i rather see OBS geting those features than an proprietary steam recorder... but at least they should treat linux as an first class citizen, unlike some recording tools that are either OBS or derivative of OBS.
OBS has those features but the setup process isn’t simple, this is also not something OBS can do without limiting the overall functionality. The manual recording shortcuts and all that are already there but there is a bit to setup. The only thing it can’t do is editing but the complexity of this, any editing app can provide that since it’s just basic trimming and stuff
Thats true, I was using the term rasterize in a general sense but you are right it is possible to do a path. The outcome is still the same which is destructive and annoying
Manjaro telemetry: No matter the purpose, it is still bad. Generating a device ID makes this linkable to the IP address(es) you are connecting from when submitting telemetry data and therefore makes the whole device trackable around the world - and therefore it's (main) user(s). By definition, the IP address itself is already a factor to make a user identifiable under EU GDPR (European General Data Protection Regulation) and therefore this must always be an informed, willful opt-in, not opt-out, according to the "privacy by default" rules in Art. 5 GDPR.

22:25 Isn't SteamOS the biggest Linux distro, at least for gamers? That has KDE by default for Desktop Mode. But yes, Ubuntu is Gnome+mods and RHEL/EnterpriseLinux has stock GNOME.
SteamOS is only accessible from a Steam Deck and the default experience of SteamOS is Steam itself so I don’t count it as a default KDE because it’s default Steam.
Fedora doesn’t typically wait for each release to update the desktop. It’s possible LXQt will be updated before 42 is released. They’ve done that with KDE edition
It's not the fact they're collecting data, more that the team has a history of messing up. I'm really surprised Manjaro is still recommended on first distro threads.
I agree data collection isn't always a bad thing but I don't want it and making it opt-out is just too far especially when Manjaro doesn't really do anything special. I'll be moving to CachyOS.
@thingsiplay SteamOS does not have KDE Plasma as the default experience, Steam is the default. SteamOS is also exclusive to the Steam Deck so it doesn’t really matter if you classify it as mainstream or not because even as mainstream, it’s really a mainstream appliance distribution.
@jkbobful openSUSE has GNOME as the default and the majority of the development is done for GNOME. KDE has some attention by openSUSE but it’s secondary. SUSE has GNOME as the exclusive focus.

How is it not? It’s not associated to anyone at all. It’s also not meant to be associated to any individual data of any kind. The purpose of a device ID is accurate counting and nothing more. Obviously some companies have ruined the idea of data collection but that doesn’t mean every single instance of it is automatically bad
Didn't Captain Beefheart sing "It's the GIMP, it's the GIMP, it's the mother ship!"?😅 OK, so it was Blimp, not GIMP, but since you reminded me🤔: Captain Beefheart made music that was discombobulated in very ordered ways, and it's freaking genius!🤯 Those cats had to play that shit manually😮 (No digital recording, but analog tape) and not lose the ever changing timing and ultra odd polyrhythms, while weaving melody and dissonance with fine touch and emotional intelligence. 😳 It's like all of the elements most mind numbing simple and repetitive music🤕 avoids like the plague for being mostly negative😠, but all negatives woven together😡 become a positive😀, unlike two wrongs not making a right. Some of it is so complicated, they practiced somewhere around 8 h/day 7 days a week, for over 8 month's straight!🥵 Oh just shut up whoever you are reading this, and listen to some! May I recommend the album Caaptain Beefheart and his magic band "Trout Mask Replica" to get you interested.🤔 It's a double album (on vinyl) at ~ 1h:15min. The song titles alone are tantalizing!😁 As to the album on Wikipedia: "Its unconventional musical style, which includes polyrhythm, multi-octave vocals, and polytonality, has given the album a reputation as one of the most challenging recordings in the 20th century musical canon". 🧐 I cannot disagree.😁
The name hurts the project and has done so for decades. This is the sole reason why it should be changed. There is no value in the name and there is a ton of negativity around it. The reasons why it hurts is different for why it should change. It should change because it hurts the project. Why does it hurt the project? Well that’s these reasons: - the word gimp is an insult to people with disabilities. This term has been around for over 100 years. It is still used to this day sadly. - the term describes a type of person who dresses up for… let’s call it the Pulp Fiction version. You can look up the meaning that way - “gimping” something refers to make something worse or damaged or broken. So saying “photoshopped” means to modify something and saying “gimped” means to worsen. This usage comes directly from the disabled people insult The above three reasons are terrible to be associated to as a project. English speaking companies and educational institutions won’t touch it because it’s radioactive basically. If they start promoting such a project they will get a bunch of bad press so it’s ignored for decades. The dev team gets no funding and is less than 10 people and there has been rollover of devs multiple times, the current team were not there during the first 20 years of the project and none of them are native English speakers. The largest reason for this is the name. As someone who has been in the graphics editing space for as long as I have, I’ve seen every argument for why it should stay thousands of times and every single one of them is irrelevant to the singular reason it should change… there is zero value to keeping it and there’s thousands of benefits to changing it. I’ll answer your follow up question though, no it is not an acronym that just happens to spell that… this was a conscious decision by the original founders, it was done on purpose. They specifically named it this on purpose as a joke to reference the Pulp Fiction version of the term. These same people who named it also abandoned the project prior to the 1.0 being released. They created this mess and left it before it ever really began. Why am I saying this? Because even the legacy of the name means nothing when the founders didn’t care enough to stay for the freaking 1.0 lol
We don’t know how they plan to implement the opt out, so that’s just speculation. Right now it’s currently opt in so we have to wait and see how they do it. It is possible to opt out responsibly by presenting the choice up front during install. We don’t know if Manjaro plan to do it that way or not so at best we can say, if they coerce people that would be bad but to say they are is a bit too early
This is a cool feature for them to add so yes I would talk about it. I don’t talk about everything they do but I would for sure on cool features. They also made Linux gaming a solid experience. Before Steam on Linux , circa 2010, there were less than 25 games on Linux and now we have thousands of games to play. Steam has my support because they support my platform

Linux community and Linux devs are 1000x different than Microsoft. 90% of us left Windows for similar reasons. When Linux distro devs do something they tell you up front being transparent about it and they give the option of not doing it. Microsoft doesn’t tell you about it and if you do find out there is no choice at all. This is why these things should not be compared with each other

Switch to Garuda Linux or CachyOS no telemetry or data collection. Why do companies think they gotta know what we're doing? Don't use company based Linux distros they suck guys they're the bad guys.
Every Linux distribution depends on stuff made by companies, this is unavoidable. However data collection doesn’t mean they want to know what you are doing on your computer, it could just be hardware setup and configuration like if they offer three desktop environments but only two of them are used by 99% of the base then that would be very good info to have.

Appreciate you acknowledging the need to change the name for G.I.M.P - most content creators don't even mention that, and maybe some of them aren't even aware of why it's needed. It would not be good if the "drama" that was happening in recent years with regards to that was consigned to a corner "because it's drama", while it's more than that.
I'm now starting to use Gimp and there are certain features I still need help with.
How to Edit GIF images and Add or Remove things like Text or Borders.
I recommend the channel Davis Media Design, with excellent and ton of GIMP tutorials.
@thingsiplay cool. Thanks for the tip.
GIMP is not going to be the best tool for editing gifs but it is possible. Here’s a tutorial that might help. logosbynick.com/edit-an-animated-gif-with-gimp/
Removing borders is just cropping so that’s covered in the link I shared but removing text can be difficult depending on the complexity of the image
Totally agree, we should not be bruising the pixels when editing images.
Linux news baby!
Honestly I don't mind telemetry as long as I have an option up front opt in or out of it. Just don't hide it. However, as someone in the cyber world, I would never use Manjaro, simply because of the decisions on how they manage packages from Arch and their lack of thought put into any decent security practices.
I am hooked on Garuda if you REALLY wanna learn Arch Linux check them out a lot of really cool developers and the community is friendly.
@cyco_nix could you elaborate on the security practices. I know about some weird wonky stuff they do but I’d like to know which things you are referring to
I'm not a fedora or gnome user but can't we just agree let fedora be the 'default' gnome distro?
Oh and kde on tumbleweed is great :)
Fedora 42 will have KDE in their mainstream together with Gnome
That’s great but that’s not happening until about April 2025. I also don’t consider it changing of focus but more of an acknowledgment of the efforts for the KDE side of Fedora. Overall it’s great but the point about not being a mainstream default is still accurate. I suspect Fedora Workstation will be the first edition promoted on the download page after this change happens
10:30 It is Opt out and continues, which is always bad
The continues part is a valid issue but opt out can be done ethically. I’ll probably dig deeper and make a follow up
That reminds me of that time when a certain orange distro had some deal witha certain shopping cart store, that deal required installing a tracking add-on in your install which was on by default and you had no say on the matter until you could finally log into your new install and remove it.
What you are recalling is not what happened. They didn’t send any data to Amazon directly, there were buffer servers, and they did not track anything which is why the results are so useless. It was a very dumb thing to do but it’s not what you said happened
NEVER should be OPT OUT. To inform people of the option it could be done during the install. Its not that hard to ASK for permission.
If they are informed during install and asked to participate then what are your thoughts on that?
@michael_tunnell that is what I said. It could be done during the install
6:28 non destructive editing probably use more ram, since you need to keep an copy of old versions on memory
10:33 - You mean THAT Roman? "Hey Niko! It's Roman! Let's go bowling!" kind of guy? ;-)
Anyone recommend a Distro that has a good LXQt Spin besides Lubuntu?
Fedora LXQt is pretty good. Lubuntu is solid though too
The Steam Game Recording is amazing. I use it since Beta and set to highest quality and 16 hours of recording in the background. xD It even marks every session start and end too, and by game title if you want. The markers are so cool, but I don't use them at the moment (need to get used to them).
Unfortunately it does not work with every game.
Valve has said that it should work with any game that allows the Steam overlay. Did you find it to not be the case?
i rather see OBS geting those features than an proprietary steam recorder...
but at least they should treat linux as an first class citizen, unlike some recording tools that are either OBS or derivative of OBS.
@@michael_tunnell it cant do the auto timeline markers (that games do using steam api)
It can with the Infowriter plugin. I have used this plugin for editing markers for TWIL for years
GIMP has allowed you to text to path for quite a long time now. No need to rasterize, but you still throw away the text data and make it uneditable.
5 GDPR.
In theory the IP is never stored to be connected but we don’t really know much about what they are planning to do overall. Limited info
Am I missing something? Just got the latest GIMP on Linux Mint and don't see any of these features.
This is an RC as in not officially released yet so Mint probably still has 2.10
@@michael_tunnell Ah right, it does say 2.10 indeed. Any idea when I'll be able to check it out then? I did watch the video but might have missed that info
Mine won’t update this for a long time probably since the final is not going to be until at least a month. I recommend getting it from the website or maybe a Flatpak
The Gnome desktop should stick to being a desktop, and leave the overall distributions to what already exists. 😁
In general I trust the FOSS community, so personally for me the Manjaro issue is not a big till. I personally share whatever data Fedora / KDE asks.
kinda upset that LXQt 2.1 hit and i'm probably not gonna be able to upgrade to it for a WHILE since i'm on fedora
Fedora KDE updates Plasma between releases sometimes, maybe Fedora LXQt does that as well … worth looking into at least. I’d say ask the spin devs
we just upgraded to 2.0 with f41 😅@@michael_tunnell
Fedora doesn’t typically wait for each release to update the desktop. It’s possible LXQt will be updated before 42 is released. They’ve done that with KDE edition
It's not the fact they're collecting data, more that the team has a history of messing up. I'm really surprised Manjaro is still recommended on first distro threads.
They do have a history of some wonky things that’s true
I will install Gnome OS and the first thing I will do is install KDE on it.
o/
lol
Also, GTK4 added a bunch of nonstandard requirements, so the might be better off moving to a more standards-oriented fork of GTK.
I don’t think that’s viable for such a small team, GIMP is made by I think just six people. Though I would love it if they moved to Qt
photo editors and web browser are hard to make
This is true, they are very complex
Regarding GIMP…
They really just need to call it PIMP or Pimp’n or something in that direction.
Big Pimp’n!
Better but not by much lol I think we should keep brainstorming on this 😆
I agree data collection isn't always a bad thing but I don't want it and making it opt-out is just too far especially when Manjaro doesn't really do anything special. I'll be moving to CachyOS.
22:12 Besides SteamOS.
Opensuse also has KDE as its default desktop environment
@thingsiplay SteamOS does not have KDE Plasma as the default experience, Steam is the default. SteamOS is also exclusive to the Steam Deck so it doesn’t really matter if you classify it as mainstream or not because even as mainstream, it’s really a mainstream appliance distribution.
@jkbobful openSUSE has GNOME as the default and the majority of the development is done for GNOME. KDE has some attention by openSUSE but it’s secondary. SUSE has GNOME as the exclusive focus.
Haaa.
"Bring out the 'GIMP.'"
I would love to see gaming live streams, except, I live on top of the world so times don't often work.
Interesting! What time would work for you and timezones? I’m just curious
@@michael_tunnell I'm not asking for it. I'm in AU and UTC 10+, I belive you would be like 6- or something. Thanks for considering.
We record Destination Linux at 6pm US Central tonight which is 10-11am Australian time on Thursdays. So you could join us for that as a patron 😎👍 more info and a timezone converter is at tuxdigital.com/live
Wait Michael!!!🤚🛑✋ Are you saying EndeavourOS isn't a big player? Sure feels like it to me!!!
Gnome the whole OS 😂😂😂
Think I’ll keep on with my Xubuntu laptop and JWM on Slackware desktop/servers
A unique hadware ID is OK??? Excuse me!
How is it not? It’s not associated to anyone at all. It’s also not meant to be associated to any individual data of any kind. The purpose of a device ID is accurate counting and nothing more. Obviously some companies have ruined the idea of data collection but that doesn’t mean every single instance of it is automatically bad
Manjaro got worse? How?
Some of it is so complicated, they practiced somewhere around 8 h/day 7 days a week, for over 8 month's straight!🥵
Oh just shut up whoever you are reading this, and listen to some! May I recommend the album Caaptain Beefheart and his magic band "Trout Mask Replica" to get you interested.🤔 It's a double album (on vinyl) at ~ 1h:15min. The song titles alone are tantalizing!😁
As to the album on Wikipedia:
"Its unconventional musical style, which includes polyrhythm, multi-octave vocals, and polytonality, has given the album a reputation as one of the most challenging recordings in the 20th century musical canon". 🧐 I cannot disagree.😁
"the name needs to change" ......................why? unironically wondering.
The name is derogatory towards a group of people born with a physical impairment, and it was chosen that way deliberately to reference a movie.
@@Cuperino is it though? or is it an acronym that stands for something? honestly i say keep the name as is ... people are way too soft .
For what
The thing is most people, even english speaking did not know it was derogatory
The name hurts the project and has done so for decades. This is the sole reason why it should be changed. There is no value in the name and there is a ton of negativity around it.
The reasons why it hurts is different for why it should change. It should change because it hurts the project. Why does it hurt the project? Well that’s these reasons:
- the word gimp is an insult to people with disabilities. This term has been around for over 100 years. It is still used to this day sadly.
- the term describes a type of person who dresses up for… let’s call it the Pulp Fiction version. You can look up the meaning that way
- “gimping” something refers to make something worse or damaged or broken. So saying “photoshopped” means to modify something and saying “gimped” means to worsen. This usage comes directly from the disabled people insult
The above three reasons are terrible to be associated to as a project.
Coerced data collection is ALWAYS bad. Bye, Manjaro.
If they ask you to do it, how is it coerced?
@@michael_tunnell They're not asking users to do it. They're forcing users who don't want it to turn it off.
Can Linux RUclipsrs please stop making free ads for Steam ALL THE TIME?
Damn Steam, using Linux really was a smart move
This is a cool feature for them to add so yes I would talk about it. I don’t talk about everything they do but I would for sure on cool features. They also made Linux gaming a solid experience. Before Steam on Linux , circa 2010, there were less than 25 games on Linux and now we have thousands of games to play. Steam has my support because they support my platform
Suse isnt a big player?
SUSE is GNOME by default and has been for 15 years
LMAO! youtube broke ublock on firefox too now. looks like Ill just have to download the videos instead.
I just pay for premium because I don’t want ads but I do want the creators to get paid for their work and premium lets you do both
@@michael_tunnell premium just increased and as someone whose on disability I just could not justify it anymore, which sucks ass, but I get running all these servers costs money
@nerida3347 oh that sucks, I didn’t notice they increased the price. That’s how they get you with subscriptions I guess 🤦♂️ I’ll still pay for it because I feel like I have to as a creator but yea not cool.
I’m leaving Microsoft because of data collection! Why take a chance? Don’t use it.
This is why these things should not be compared with each other
Krita is much better and feature rich fork of GIMP.
Krita is very good but it’s not a fork of GIMP. Krita was started by the KDE team. Krita started from Kimage which was then called KImageShop and then eventually became known as Krita in 2002
Switch to Garuda Linux or CachyOS no telemetry or data collection. Why do companies think they gotta know what we're doing? Don't use company based Linux distros they suck guys they're the bad guys.
Every Linux distribution depends on stuff made by companies, this is unavoidable. However data collection doesn’t mean they want to know what you are doing on your computer, it could just be hardware setup and configuration like if they offer three desktop environments but only two of them are used by 99% of the base then that would be very good info to have.
tried gimp for like 30 minutes and nearly died from an anyeurism.. WHY does FOSS have to be so fucking horrendous to work with? Not everyone is a cli/hotkey kind of a person... it applies to blender as well.. I'm sure there's some very capable programming under it.. but there NEEDS to be some real GUI/UX experience added to the mix
You probably tried 2.10 if you did it recent since I don’t think this version is available in most places however even with the improvements of 3.0 it’s still very much behind the industry standards for sure. However FOSS has no bearing on this projects issues, there are bigger issues for this one. FOSS also applies to Blender, OBS, Firefox, Chromium, Bitwarden, Wordpress, and more… all of which are incredibly popular and fantastic projects with good UI/UX
@@michael_tunnell nope, 3.10 rc1..installer still in my downloads folder..you find the link to the development page at the bottom of the downloads page
In that case, yea you’re right GIMP needs a lot of work but that doesn’t reflect FOSS in general, there a bunch of great examples like I listed before
@@michael_tunnell Blender is horrendously messy and like having a train crash into your face at full speed.. there's nothing userfriendly about it at all.. it's VERY obvious that it's been written by CLI/Hotkey people and not normal humans. Same reason GIMP is so horrible really and Godot... at least blender has made some slight improvements.. but they remain slight.. it's a very capable program that doesn't get used because it's such a bad experience.
I agree with you to a point. Blender is designed for a particular use case and user type which seems to like it. Sure it’s not the most intuitive and the fact that it used right click by default for everything instead of left click was really dumb but they finally fixed that and the app itself is powerful and offers a ton of pro functionality. Blender could absolutely use improvements of the usability side but it does get used by companies and projects. GIMP on the other hand is so far behind that the interface is barely a footnote because so much that’s needed these days is missing
Gimp is crap. why? no app for android tablets. no texturing of 3d object. no good paint or brushes mixing machine. no physical simulators for water and dust colors.
GIMP doesn’t do 3D objects or simulators of any kind. I think you’re talking about a different app
