Many are unknown, because the user has OS info sharing disabled, and It's unlikely many of them are windows or Mac users, but many Linux users secure everything to the max, and I would take it so do BSD, Haiku and other FOSS OS users. With the move to Wayland, I would like to see KDE address the ability to combine mouse and peripheral bindings to keystrokes. Previously used xbindings, which were somewhat of a kludge, but at least they worked. If they're going to incorporate AI into the operating system, it would be nice if they could use it to resolve system issues. Allow AI to scan the *.log files, and address the issues in an expert fashion. A lot of time is spent scouring forums in search of solutions, which frequently suggest installing software, and changing file settings, only to see the problems persist. It would be great to have an AI expert in IT, KDE, and security, to maintain and monitor the system.
i not entirely sure that recall was misstep for microsoft perhaps this is the primary reason for requiring TPM 2.0 and blacklisting a ton of modern CPUs - they need this type of hardware to encrypt and archive a screenshot every 3 seconds in the background while not significantly impacting user experience you look at google and all the access their AI has to mine, how can microsoft compete? harvesting every second of their users computing activity!
@@michael_tunnell yeah i don't think there is any way to polish that turd, best thing is to just push it out, pretend they made a mistake and promise it's going to be reworked, leak a fake uninstall feature and then just let it blow over but ultimately it'll be deployed on every system, enabled by default and fed into their AI - and eventually not possible to disable you are the product the good thing is that linux is finally ready for windows refugees
I want to install the latest version of Autocad on my linux desktop without running any sort of VM yo run windows. I have tried Wine ans Bottles and nothing works. The only version I can get working is Autocad 2004. What good is a 20 year old software going to do?
Some software is not available on Linux unfortunately and Autocad has never cared about the platform so all I can say is check for tutorials on a workaround for it. I think Fusion 360 works on Linux but not sure of a way to make Autocad work
@@michael_tunnell What makes it worse is when I download Autocad from their site (using my work login) I can get it to install, but I cant get it to work because the Autodesk Connector needs to work at the same time, so its not as simple as just running the program. I can get Vectorworks to install but it wont register for some reason. If I could get either of them to work, then I could dump windows all together.
Hey Michael, I have seen somewhere that it is possible to build a bluetooth and streaming device from a Raspberry Pie, that you can connect to an old stereo amplifier, but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Do you or anyone on this site know anything about that?
I don't mind plasma. I prefer Cinnamon. I don't like the idea of any one thing being the "default" in any OS. I want to see a desktop choice on ALL distros that the user can choose. Don't have any commonly used software installed right away. Show all the open source desktops, browser, office and graphics, games, etc., that you can just click and pic, and those would be downloaded as the default. You should also be able to click and pick multiple software, in the case of office programs. Although MSOffice has most of what people need, other software has other features that are useful, and sometimes easier to use. Now, as for raising money, I would be perfectly fine with the idea of a one-time payment, like $10, that will get evenly distributed to all the software creators picked to be part of your personalized OS. I am not talking about MS or Apple and their price gouging and you not having much of a customizing choice. Make it clear that no one company gets the entire requested amount. Payment upfront will legitimize the professional nature of any OS and also, it won't my MS or Apple.
I have spent $100 on Windows licenses over the past 20 years. That's 10c per week. Not exactly price gouging. The license is the only manditory cost. There is more open source or free or shareware or low-priced software available for Windows than for any other OS. Abd that 10c I've received free upgrades to Windows 10 and 11, and these upgrades were seemless, unlike the nightmares I experience with Linux.
@@toby9999 I hate to admit that for a couple of decades I have done all I can to find a way to run Windows and most software without having to pay. It was all for personal use, but each year and each reinvention of the OS it became more difficult to do workarounds. Finally, with Windows 11, I just threw up my hands because I wasn't about to buy new hardware that would run it, and I am tired of workarounds. It is great that Linux is super-easy to use in comparison to only a few years ago, and all of it is free. Since it is free, I am not so cheap as to withhold some money to help in development.

It might not be a good solution for you and that’s fine, to each their own, but just because it’s not good for you doesn’t mean it’s not good for everyone.
Actually that unknown should also be counted to Linux , these are definitely running some Linux versions. As base kernel .
Many are unknown, because the user has OS info sharing disabled, and It's unlikely many of them are windows or Mac users, but many Linux users secure everything to the max, and I would take it so do BSD, Haiku and other FOSS OS users. To count the unknowns as Linux would be unethical, irrational, illogical, and just wrong, because of what the word UNKNOWN means by definition!
Arch is so easy to install, no buggy installer to deal with.
I donated to ARMBIAN, cause they still Support my old BananaPis
Linux on desktop is not really growing, Google just sells more Chromebooks and those technically count as Linux desktop.
I addressed this in the episode, Chromebooks are counted separately from Linux in this data set so no, that has nothing to do with this report.
Time to start exploring other desktop options.
Openbox is really good to customize, but it requires a lot of time and effort to configure and add all the extras needed the first time. After that, just install everything needed, and copy the configs to any new install, and you are done.
The real issue right now is Wayland support outside of KDE and Gnome
I don't see how $50 bucks for a 2gb version is worth buying, when the 4gb version is just 10 more. I think this version was only introduced to add "perceived value" to the 4gb model.
I don’t see the point either since the lowest version used to be $35. I feel like the $60 makes more sense and then $80 is most overall best option
I'm all for kde development and will donate but I think kde is absolutely disgusting. Looks even worse than windows 10 which is an abomination.
What exactly is disgusting? The overall layout? The colors? I’m curious
KDE needs to re/evaluate how they are spending. They're blowing a lot of money on personal.
It turns out they are a non profit and had too much reserve money so they had to
ubuntu should make snap faster or remove it because it kept getting slower since 20.04
maybe snap should be rebranded as a testing application system, once you like the software you install it properly
I do not like Plasma, anyway. I prefer Xfce and Mint. JFYI
Sounds good to me, that’s the beauty of Linux, we have all kinds of great options for personal preferences
It would be great to have an AI expert in IT, KDE, and security, to maintain and monitor the system.
i not entirely sure that recall was misstep for microsoft
perhaps this is the primary reason for requiring TPM 2.0 and blacklisting a ton of modern CPUs - they need this type of hardware to encrypt and archive a screenshot every 3 seconds in the background while not significantly impacting user experience
you look at google and all the access their AI has to mine, how can microsoft compete? harvesting every second of their users computing activity!
It’s a misstep because everyone hates it, it wasn’t a mistake, they certainly are doing it on purpose for sure
@@michael_tunnell yeah i don't think there is any way to polish that turd, best thing is to just push it out, pretend they made a mistake and promise it's going to be reworked, leak a fake uninstall feature and then just let it blow over
but ultimately it'll be deployed on every system, enabled by default and fed into their AI - and eventually not possible to disable
you are the product
the good thing is that linux is finally ready for windows refugees
I don’t know about the amplifier part but LibreELEC is a distro made for being a media center and they have builds for the Raspberry Pi
@@michael_tunnell Thanks Michael I will certainly look into that.
What would it take for us to count chromeos to be part of the linux stats?
To me, as a snap stan, flatpak support would be enough ;)
14:11 *4.55%, linux was 4.45% on previous month.
I saw it got better when I was editing but I already had recorded it so lol 😆 🤷♂️
@@michael_tunnell 😁
I absolutely love KDE (Plasma). Please, don't change!
Since Canonical did not state that they are ditching snap outright, I still won't be switching back.
17:40 just add chromeos lol
Distro hoppers will see KDE donate notify daily!
Fair point! xD
As a non-profit, KDE legally can't hold onto money, and they have large cash reserves, which they are required to spend.
They aren't struggling for money, but the donation notification is to try and at least counterbalance that spending so they don't eventually get to that point.
The day ubuntu switches the kernel to snap, sparks will fly lol
It should be noted that KDE as a whole doesn't have a deficit as they have a decent amount of cash on hand.
I don’t know how much money they have in the bank but running a deficit just means taking in less than you spend in a period of time. I hope they have savings to make up for it otherwise it would likely not be sustainable for very long
Remember, kids, non-profits LOVE recurring donations. They live on recurring donations.
Yea kid that normally happens nowdays if you got something good you can survive if it sucks then gl
KDE needs to be doing everything possible to have Mint bring back its KDE flavor.
That would require someone to convince mint to do that and I’d bet the only way to convince them would need to offer to do the work for them since they dropped most of the Qt based stuff in Mint but it would be nice to see happen
What if you're NEW to Linux and want to use Garuda?
Why do you want to use Garuda? Is there a particular reason that you need it? If it’s related to being based on Arch then I can comfortably say that’s not a pro for beginners, that’s a con.
@@michael_tunnell I'm trying it out as an ISO from a thumb drive, and so far, it looks very good and works very well - even for a beginner like myself!

KDE is asking for plasma donations. 😂.
I love KDE Plasma. I would be willing to donate.
You mean blood plasma, right? ;-)
@@igorthelight KDE always lead me to want to slit my wrists due to the feature bloat and redundancy. What a fitting name.
OOPS StatCounter website screenshot says 4.55, but you said 4.45.
I saw it got better when I was editing but I already had recorded it so lol 😆 🤷♂️
@@michael_tunnell Lol
pfff... who want a 2gig pi... 16gig would be worth having at least
Depends on the application.
KDE is my DE of choice, I love it. I have tried several other DEs and I always go right back to KDE no matter what I try. I will be donating when I can.
I hate when people say that "is hard/difficult" for a beginner to use that distro or the other, the beginner will struggle or will have same difficulties even with windows or mint.
I prefer it is easier to use or is more friendly that distro, whatever is that one.In ether case for a beginner i would recommend to do some research.
Given the rise of llms, money isn't really what the kde project needs. It can cost less to stay at the same pace.
Every time when you turn on the pc i should be like pop up notification kde deserves more love.
I quit using KDE years ago because they jam everything into it. It's got so much stupid unnecessary shi*, especially when customizing the desktop, such as adding those stupid spacers to position things on the taskbar.
Chinese based distro? lol
Ye....ah i can smell a dozen of backdooors
