      @@CWM030 It would be easy if they had a utility to save all configs, including complete themes to a file or an archive that could be imported into any new install. That's one of the reasons I left KDE too, but there were also some settings missing that I wanted, and there are no themes that fit my preference. The themes are a pain to modify.

      It's a shame that Linux has been shooting itself in the foot for 25 years in regards to making it user-friendly.
      While there seems to be a lot more interest this year due to Microsoft's cock-ups, it's mostly techy/half-techy types who don't mind putting up with some terminal usage. Otherwise, there could've been an absolute landslide of new users.

    5:28 this is either wrong or misleading. They have explicitly stated that, no, they're not struggling. The opposite, in fact. They have a SURPLUS of cash to the point that, since they are a NON-PROFIT, they have to spend their cash. At the very least, that was their statement on the reddit thread of Phoronix report that paint it as more dire than it is.
    Now, yes, that would leave them having to scale back eventually if they don't get extra income. Combine that with all the reasoning they have stated in Nate's blog, it's why they are asking for donations. But they aren't struggling- it would still be more accurate to say that they are successful but want to be more successful.

    Of course KDE needs donation.. And of course they needed to 'overspend', but really, from a German perspective (it is an e.V.) it was a must to lower the 'stash' so technically they did NOT overspend. Schatzmeister did the right thing. Many RUclipsr who were talking about that this week have not the competence to understand this legal form which is specific for Germany.

      The thing I appreciate the most is how the KDE project shows real understanding of the user and what they want. Probably because developers actually use the desktop themselves.

    21:51 I want to note that while Linux desktop typically isn't a target for malware, if the marketshare continues to grow we will very likely see more malware for Linux. Iirc, there is already malware for the server side (since Linux dominates that market), so it's not like Linux is immune. Just saying this to add another perspective, since I'm a bit concerned that us Linux users are a bit too used to not having to worry about malware.

He literally funded and helped create the most user friendly distribution ever made yet he’s attacked as if he’s in it to make money off open source i mean it is just absurd
      Side note, alternatives only exist because there are people who can afford to spend their spare time to make cool stuff or they get paid to make cool stuff. No one will spend their time on alternatives or any project if they can’t afford to pay their rent so it’s not just about having financial backing from a millionaire, it’s about financial stability for developers because without that those developers won’t have the ability to spend their time on an unfunded open source project. With the move to Wayland, I would like to see KDE address the ability to combine mouse and peripheral bindings to keystrokes. Previously used xbindings, which were somewhat of a kludge, but at least they worked. If they're going to incorporate AI into the operating system, it would be nice if they could use it to resolve system issues. Allow AI to scan the *.log files, and address the issues in an expert fashion. A lot of time is spent scouring forums in search of solutions, which frequently suggest installing software, and changing file settings, only to see the problems persist. It would be great to have an AI expert in IT, KDE, and security, to maintain and monitor the system.

    i not entirely sure that recall was misstep for microsoft
    perhaps this is the primary reason for requiring TPM 2.0 and blacklisting a ton of modern CPUs - they need this type of hardware to encrypt and archive a screenshot every 3 seconds in the background while not significantly impacting user experience
    you look at google and all the access their AI has to mine, how can microsoft compete? harvesting every second of their users computing activity!

      @@michael_tunnell yeah i don't think there is any way to polish that turd, best thing is to just push it out, pretend they made a mistake and promise it's going to be reworked, leak a fake uninstall feature and then just let it blow over
      but ultimately it'll be deployed on every system, enabled by default and fed into their AI - and eventually not possible to disable

    I want to install the latest version of Autocad on my linux desktop without running any sort of VM yo run windows. I have tried Wine ans Bottles and nothing works. The only version I can get working is Autocad 2004. What good is a 20 year old software going to do?

    • @michael_tunnell
      @michael_tunnell  18 дней назад

      Some software is not available on Linux unfortunately and Autocad has never cared about the platform so all I can say is check for tutorials on a workaround for it. I think Fusion 360 works on Linux but not sure of a way to make Autocad work

    • @obviouslytom
      @obviouslytom 18 дней назад

      @@michael_tunnell What makes it worse is when I download Autocad from their site (using my work login) I can get it to install, but I cant get it to work because the Autodesk Connector needs to work at the same time, so its not as simple as just running the program. I can get Vectorworks to install but it wont register for some reason. If I could get either of them to work, then I could dump windows all together.

    I don't mind plasma. I prefer Cinnamon. I don't like the idea of any one thing being the "default" in any OS. I want to see a desktop choice on ALL distros that the user can choose. Don't have any commonly used software installed right away. Show all the open source desktops, browser, office and graphics, games, etc., that you can just click and pic, and those would be downloaded as the default. You should also be able to click and pick multiple software, in the case of office programs. Although MSOffice has most of what people need, other software has other features that are useful, and sometimes easier to use.
    Now, as for raising money, I would be perfectly fine with the idea of a one-time payment, like $10, that will get evenly distributed to all the software creators picked to be part of your personalized OS. I am not talking about MS or Apple and their price gouging and you not having much of a customizing choice. Make it clear that no one company gets the entire requested amount. Payment upfront will legitimize the professional nature of any OS and also, it won't my MS or Apple.

      I have spent $100 on Windows licenses over the past 20 years. That's 10c per week. Not exactly price gouging. The license is the only manditory cost. There is more open source or free or shareware or low-priced software available for Windows than for any other OS. Abd that 10c I've received free upgrades to Windows 10 and 11, and these upgrades were seemless, unlike the nightmares I experience with Linux.

    • @WalterPetrovic
      @WalterPetrovic 21 день назад

      @@toby9999 I hate to admit that for a couple of decades I have done all I can to find a way to run Windows and most software without having to pay. It was all for personal use, but each year and each reinvention of the OS it became more difficult to do workarounds. Finally, with Windows 11, I just threw up my hands because I wasn't about to buy new hardware that would run it, and I am tired of workarounds. It is great that Linux is super-easy to use in comparison to only a few years ago, and all of it is free. Since it is free, I am not so cheap as to withhold some money to help in development.
