It's films like these that highlight the effects of nature vs nurture. How much are we just predisposed to from the get go, and how much of what we see, think about, and are surrounded by influence us and bring more of certain elements into our life? Henry and Otis could have stopped the cycle, but instead, they chose to wallow in and perpetrate the depravity further. They had already been through so much, so it wouldn't have been as if they were naive or unaware of that side of life, what it could possibly contain, its existence. Instead, they further destroyed (what little was left) of their innocence and went unnecessarily deeper into the gory details of the disgusting side of life, instead of just knowing what they know and building themselves up/protecting themselves from further harm as a cautionary tale. Most people don't acknowledge this, but to a certain degree (albeit not as much as in childhood, but I suppose it depends on the open mindset of the individual), we are still building ourselves constantly as adults. Who we are...our reality. Environment and exposure matter. There's knowing the key information about the bad, and using that to make the sweet things even sweeter and more appreciated and staying away from the slippery slope of the bad, and then there's fully diving in headfirst to most anything 💀with reckless abandon for your own innocence, pride, morality, etc. There's knowing what you need to in order to be savvy and aware and grateful, and then there's overindulging in detrimental morbid curiosities that slowly poison people mainly without their knowledge, adding up bit by bit over time, and people don't *fully* know until it's too late. Most underestimate the disastrous consequences down the road, or the extent to which these things influence us, even as adults, but that's why these processes are called SUBconscious, and no one is completely immune. Even if one argues that they can compartmentalize it, as humans we are only able to to a certain-- and far from perfect/adequate extent no matter how much we try-- and only for so long until what is not contained leaks and catches up with us, especially if one keeps feeding the flame 🔥.A healthy dose of both sides of reality with caution is fine, but movies like this are a blown up reminder of what can happen in a worst case scenario of the other extreme, although most of us, hopefully, never go to these lengths, but a more insidious and lesser process often occurs to even ordinary folk that slowly ruins our mindset, morals/focus, and life if we're not on guard and making smart decisions for our souls and who we will become. Your heart and soul are an awesome responsibility, guard and teach them intelligently and with moderation, lest you don't recognize yourself and who you've become one day in the mirror. What's also intriguing as a movie-goer is, when there's no one to root for, where do you go? What do you expend your energy on or direct your focus to? Is it condemning the characters? Hoping for redemption? It's an interesting tension not often explored. I really liked your campy 80s ending tho, with the edit rewinding on the TV (very nice touch), and the fadeout with "Wanna watch it again?" Very much an end credits feel.
