June Shares Her All-Time Favorite Chinese Spices, Condiments, And Toppings | Delish

- Viewers of Budget Eats have asked time and time again for June to do a shopping video on where and what she buys for her spice cabinet, but the truth is... there is simply too much to pack it all into one neat video.
Having said that, a good place to start scratching the surface of delicious flavor agents is June's favorite Chinese pantry staples. There are spices, condiments, and toppings that she's always had on hand, for good reason: they are versatile and can be added easily to any dish-not just Chinese ones!-for a bump in savoriness. And if you stick around to the end, you'll get to see a bonus round-up of her top three favorite Chinese packaged snacks.

CORRECTION: I have been informed that "green and red Sichuan peppers are not different stages of ripeness but two distinct varieties, like red and white wine grapes." Sorry for the misinformation and please don't ever trust me again.
Until this video, I always thought you were saying citron peppercorns. It was very exciting to realize I HAVE June's favorite peppercorns!!!!!
girl you need to have your own cooking show or go on a cooking show or go on a cooking compitetion cause your food always looks yummy
I still trust ya

yes, the green are called Sansho in Japan, not quite as harsh, but the prickly ash grows in many areas of the world - I'm curious to find some in my area and experiment....and I'm am Team MSG all the way
Petition for a raise for June! She's over here carrying the weight of Delish!!!
She's the ONLY reason I subscribe to this channel.
I watch Delish videos only if June is in them
Amen to this!!!! I didn't know delish till June!
Yep I agree I watch Delish due to June she’s fantastic

Pineapple cakes are what fig newtons always wished they could be.
Yessssssssss
Agree!
You're right and you should say it.
As a lover of fig newtons 👀
I thought the same thing.
I'm impressed by how she does all that cooking on such little counter space.
Totally agree!! That would drive me nuts... :)
How is one person so cute, funny, informative, educational, smart, bold, creative, weird and beautiful and talented??? it's June
🔥🔥🔥🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼♥️♥️♥️
She puts in a lot of work behind the scenes to look that natural and effortless on camera ❤️
@@rachelburton4603 Yes, she does ! It’s really impressive ! Kudos to her !!💪🏼
All of this!!!
true!!!!!!!
Aaron in the back waiting for the chili oil looks like Oliver asking “Please June may I have some spice?” HAHAAH
In Mexico we have something similar to the pork floss. It's beef and called Machaca. Typically eaten in scrambled eggs 🥚
"Mysterious Grandma" is quite a descriptor.
Pork floss seems right up my alley. Maybe use it as a pizza topping. Time to hit up my local Asian market!
Omg that sounds divine. I've never thought of using it that way. I usually love shoving it in sandwiches or baked breads or congee. That's a new combo I want to try! :D thanks for that idea, Rebekah!
Like bacon on pizza. Best ever.
Chinese ingredients are so underappreciated in the West (especially Latin America). I wish they were more easily available as Japanese ingredients are.
I love how June describes flavors. I can almost taste them alongside her while watching.
I am a simple human, I see June; I watch the video. 🥰
Hey june, here in SEA we mostly have rice 24/7 in our rice cooker. Could you please make a budget eats for side dishes to go along with rice?(I would rly appriciate if the recipes are simple enough for college students to make). Love your contents 👍
Yessss this!
I love that she says the Chinese names of them and says it with perfect pronunciation, somehow feel seen as a Chinese myself. Also gold content as always!
June, I love how you explain all the ingredients and especially Aaron waiting behind you for his heat.
I consider myself virtual bonded with anyone who literally lol'd at "mysterious grandma" 🏆
Delish, give June a raise!
I speak Korean and understand English so I appreciate June teaching me about Chinese ingredients and what their names mean. Can't wait to get some of them and try for myself.
June's videos are my favourites!
Loved this so much!!! A whole new vid about dried mushrooms, shrimp, roots?
OOO, that would be amazing! Seconding this! :)
Same.
That pork floss reminds me of regional Sinaloan Carne Machaca from Mocorito.😋 Took me right back to my childhood.
Pineapple cakes were a big star of little lunch in primary school for me.
My mom used to use what I now know as msg. Since I’ve started watching June videos- I bought some and now I get to enjoy it as an adult 😎 THANKS!
Once again June has answered my prayers
yes! recognition for century eggs. i was soooo offended when they used them once on some competition show for a segment where the competitors had to 'eat gross food.' they are not gross!!! admittedly, they probably look pretty gross to those who are not used to them heehee.
Agreed! I love them especially in a rice porridge but it could be odd for people who are not used to them.
Well, they look gisgusting to me.
That was an incredible primer on Chinese cooking! June smashed it out of the park :)
We used chicken floss and beef floss in Indonesia. And yes, on porridge as emergency quick for hungry time. Eat it anytime u want, breakfast mostly. 🇮🇩🇮🇩🇮🇩
When I was growing up Accent was the US accepted MSG then somewhere down the line they started screaming MSG is bad for you. But not salt in general and it was pulled from any foods it was found in. I lived in Japan for a year and went to Costco and saw a 20 lb bag of MSG … look more people live past 100 in China and Japan and MSG has been there the whole time. Makes ya wonder who is really being silly about it ( The US per usual). 😁
Probably because it's a migraine trigger for a lot of people.
My dad put Accent on every steak he ever cooked my entire childhood. I have a bag of MSG in my spice drawer but it’s nowhere near 20 pounds!
Some people can have a reaction to MSG. My daughter gets severe asthma from MSG. My husband and son are fine consuming it.
Omgosh !!! So true.
@@balmaur5826 depends on how much is used..
This is exactly what I have been telling my hubby I needed. I went into a store to buy items but couldn’t quite describe what i wanted!!!
I absolutely LOVE this segment!! Food is such a great gateway to other cultures and the more people are exposed to them, the greater the chance we can normalize the scents and taste in America and globally. I'm speaking from the experience/perspective of an American kid of Chinese ancestry who would get teased with my lunch boxes during school trips because it was so foreign.
Love it!!
i would literally give my life for century egg and congee, so good
June, thank you for the Pork Floss description! When I lived in Beijing I was eating something and saw the pork floss on top. My friend didn't know the right word to translate it so he said it was 'hairy pork'. For some reason my mind went to hair on a pig and I had to throw it away and never tried anything like that again. Pork floss is a much better description!!!
June is my favorite Chinese staple❤️❤️❤️
If "umami" and dank, funky spice had a baby, it would be June.
Another June video….woo hoo!!!!!
Toasted sesame oil is so great! A lot of shops locally only have regular sesame oil, and it doesn't hit the spot if I try to substitute! But if there's no toasted sesame oil, dry toast some sesame seeds in the pan first (no oil) and then add a drizzle of untoasted sesame oil at the end instead...? (Lowest hob setting and stir regularly so they don't burn).
Same with rice wine vinegar and mere rice vinegar, which will not do the same work in a recipe! I like to do Japanese style pickled cucumber. It just didn't taste as good when I had to get the ingredients from the normal supermarket instead of the expensive, but more authentic, range from the wholefoods store!
I get my kimchi fresh there, and they have about 4 raw, unpasteurised, kimchi products in the fridge, to nourish my gut biome! And a bunch of different raw sauerkrauts. I tried to make my own raw kimchi... but I got scared and didn't dare to eat it!
I prefer tamari (fermented soy sauce) to soy sauce, but I don't think I have ever bought one of the thick soy sauces mentioned in this vid, yet.
My favourite roast potato recipe (my own take on my mum's) calls for tamari, balsamic vinegar, butter, salt and pepper to go on the parboiled chopped potatoes, bash them around slightly to fluff up the outsides and soak in the goodness, and then stick them in the oven. You can also add garlic, herbs (sage and oregano are my recommendations), chili powder, paprika (smoked or sweet), etc.!
I'm doing duck legs today! So, I am going to cut the butter in the recipe down, drain off the fats rendered from browning the skins of the duck legs (on the hob, while the oven heats up and the potatoes parboil!), and coat the potatoes in the oils. Then I plan to adorn the bed of potatoes with the pre-crisped duck legs, in an oven dish. Wish me a nice, crispy, umami banquet!
I will get on with a marinade for the duck legs in a minute, and will use some of the ingredients mentioned here, as I love Asian flavours!
I can't stand century eggs though! Duck eggs are awesome fresh, just as they are! So yolky! I like them just like that, fried sunny side up, and salt and pepper! Maybe dip some homemade potato wedges in that yolky goodness (pick a cuisine; it all works, for the wedge seasoning!).
Lao Gan Ma and Preserved Radish are the best and so easy to add flavour to Chinese or non Chinese foods! I think I'll try Century Eggs now-They don't seem so scary now!!
I love that you described Sichuan peppercorns as mysterious grandma. That is the best food description!
That veggie dish looked GOOD! I love caramelized onions. I do a garlic squash that’s just garlic, squash and very caramelized onions sautéed in olive oil. One of my favorite foods.
Yeah, I love June!!!
YAY!!!! Another June video just made my day.
Thanks June! Filing this away for our next market visit. So helpful!
The very amazing June!!
This was so helpful! Thank you!
Thank you June, for another delightful video! Have all these ingredients except the eggs- will get those on my next Ranch 99 shopping trip. You've boosted my confidence to try them!
Absolutely brilliant video June! What a perfect primer

This was awesome!

I adore June too. Give her a raise ❗️DEFINITELY.
June can make anything look delicious!!!
Anything with June, watch right at away!!
Thank you, June❤
I LOVE shrimp chips! Can’t get enough!
thanks for the tour into your cuisine!
Thanks for sharing and informing as always ❤️
This was awesome! It was fascinating to watch you cook without the limitations you (or the folks behind your videos) often impose on yourself. I learned so much!
My favorite food / condiment / spice info vlog!!
You are my discovery of 2021. Thank you.
Thank you June! Time to go shopping at the neighborhood toko and try some new things!
Thank you for debunking MSG misinformation June, information is power 🤓
Hi from Sweden!! Just saying, your the best June. Lern'd so so much. Thank you, thank you. 😋😋😃😉
From the snack aisle, I love those black sesame wafer cookies. Very subtle flavor, so nutty, goes great crumbled on top of ice cream... And the little crunchy fried "smiling" cookies with sesame seeds on the outside. Addictive.
This was super interesting, i will definitely try to incorporate this ingredients
Thanxs for doing this
Perfect timing! I was headed to the Asian Grocery store because of your lives and two Korean mukbangers I enjoy watching…want to try some new Asian dishes. *Taking notes*
A ho hum Saturday just leveled up. ‘Cause June and a new video, ya know?
Good suggestions! Buying them immediately
June is the BEST! Hey Delish, we need more June videos!!!
Bought five-spice powder just yesterday! love it!
Omg June, so good! I love your noods.
So excited for this video!!!
Fun video! The pork floss omelet is a great idea - but the flavor is as addictive as advertised. I usually end up mindlessly snacking it straight out of those huge jars before discovering that what should have lasted a month only lasted a few days. 😅
I'm so happy I have most of these spices and condiments in my rotation already. Spicy chili crisp for LIFE.
The pork floss reminds me of a Mexican food called “Machaca” it can be cooked with vegetables but it is made out of beef. Same process of making as the pork floss.
BYE- the way I needed this so desperately in my life???
I enjoy listening to her so much....I also love 5 spices powder.
Love the buttermilk bread at the Asian market. They have a sweet custard inside. Love milk bread too.
My favorite is spicy fermented bean curd. Yum
I just love u June :: I love watching ur channel
So helpful
As a cook working w/ wild game, this was soooo helpful! Definitely adding white pepper to my spice pantry.
You don’t understand I’ve been looking for something like this for so long I have all these ingredients in my cabinets and I just couldn’t figure out for the life of me how to use them properly. Thank you so so much.
Is it possible to eat on a budget when shopping at Whole Foods? I feel like if anyone can make that possible, it's June.
Oof no....not really in my experience. Even right now buying their cheapest ingredients like dried beans and rice and flour are even more expensive (heck dried beans from the bulk section aren't even stocked at my whole food right now cuz of pandemic). It's better to support local business that aren't led by huge corps like Amazon/Whole Foods (which lets be honest.....they rip you off most of the time).
I bought bacon at Whole Foods. Zilch flavor! What a rip.
No. Just go to your local food bank. It’s free (:
We love love love June!😁😁😁😁💗💗💗💗
I love youre videos june youre such a great chef and entertainer i show all youre videos too my friends & were all subscribed too! Sending lots of love & respect from LONDON ONTARIO CANADA 🇨🇦
June should make a video showing us how she makes all her favorite basic Chinese staples! I find it can be hard to find good recipes online because a lot of them are very Westernized + June will always reign supreme in my heart
