  • Not a root, not quite a stalk: It's a rhizome: meet turmeric. Outside of specific recipes-mostly curries-that call for turmeric, this wonderfully versatile plant doesn't seem to make much of an appearance in a lot of North American recipes. Which is a shame, but don't worry: we're going to fix this today, right now.

In Norway we use turmeric in "lusekatter" which we bake for St. Lucia the 13th of December. We use turmeric instead of Saffron, because turmeric is less expensive, but still gives a nice colour.
I just love June!! Hope she gets an enourmous kitchen later where she can organize all her spices and and have a huge fridge where she can have all her interesting stuff and leftovers, and an island where she can serve Aron!

Whenever I have the chance, I'll buy a couple of fresh knobs of turmeric and store them in the cupboard, just in case. It's certainly anti-septic, I (too) often suffer from a stomach upset, and chewing on some turmeric works like a charm: the pain is generally gone after an hour or so!
