@@ShivVZG yooo i just started studying for the SAT these past few days. Got a 1200 on the first practice test cuz I literally fell asleep through the math and reading sections. I really want to commit at least 30 mins into studying for the SAT at least every day but all these homework are getting in the way. Any advices?
hahaha don't worry bro the reading section is a nightmare for a lot of people. And I think I had 20+ wrong on my first reading section PSAT test xD You can improve a lot! : D
For cramming peeps: 1. Spend more time reading passages than answering questions 2. Only refer back to passage if absolutely necessary 3. For “which line best supports ___”, think about when you saw the evidence in the text and search there. Don’t go through each choice unless you need to 4. Do not choose primary definition answers (main definition of words) 5. “Eat” the science and history passages. Bring butter. Legitimately, you must read these sections carefully for details. 6. Cross out extraneous answers (unless evidence questions); it will keep you from overthinking your answers
I got a 1590 on my SAT using strategies similar to the ones you recommend, so this guy is legit y’all. If you get anything out of this, it’s to take the time to fully understand the passage!! The only caution I’d have with your strategies is to avoid any sort of generalizing as you did with finding the word that fits in context. While that is the case most of the time, I’ve seen collegeboard switch it up before. (they’re rude like that) You’re killing it tho; keep up the good content!
What about writing section? Should we jump into questions since 35’ is too short to read the whole paras, and the right answers might be seen without comprehension 🥺
@@mechamicro you don’t get a scholarship for high SAT. I scored a 1590 and didn’t get any money for school. Only money I got from anything was for football.
Bro, you are actually a god. I just took the SAT today and it went so well. The only thing I did from my previous attempt in August is try using your strategy and my performance magically improved. I swear I’ve spent so much time trying to improve; I practiced over 3000 questions, read prep books, and studied under tutoring, yet my score decreased every attempt through the past year. However, you were the only one who was able to help me (only other channel is Supertutor TV ) Also, this happened to be the last SAT I could ever take since I’m a senior. Just wanted to say thank you so much!!
I'm so happy to hear that it worked for you dude!! : D You definitely worked hard and I hope you get the score you're shooting for! And thank you so much for sharing, hope you have a great admissions cycle this year!! (BTW don't forget to have fun this year too :P) Senior year goes by fast xD
Dragoon GT that’s great! I have a question, my son who’s a jr took it today for the first time and we were under the impression that it was only 4 sections (2 math plus the reading and grammar sections). However he said that there was a 5th section (not the essay, he took that too). He said there was another passage with about 15 questions, did you get that extra section too?
Bonus tips: 1.) On the writing section, if you're unsure of the answer, it's almost always the *shortest answer that makes sense*. This is usually the case since they oftentimes throw in redundant phrases to test your ability to recognize them. 2.) On the math free response questions, if it asks you to round to the nearest ____, then the answer's probably going to be a decimal. With this in mind, it's also important to pay attention to what the question is asking you to round to, since if it asks for the nearest integer but you write out the entire number, then you'll get it wrong. 3.) Shading the answers in usually takes me a while. Instead of orienting your Scantron slip vertically, rotate it horizontally and slide the tip of it under the paper. This way, you can immediately shade in the answer as soon as you figure it out and don't have to move your arm much. As a bonus, you can move the paper sideways underneath the test booklet to cover questions you've already answered so you don't accidentally shade in the wrong circle. This usually saves me about a minute and reduces the risk of having to erase many answers since you skipped a row.
I've got no clue why this was recommended to me after I've been attending college for 2 weeks lol also reading the description, thats some mad improvement, and fight on!
Aw man dude I’m sorry to hear that, I actually made this video a week before the nov SAT specifically for you guys :( tho I’m sure you did well without these tips anyway! But if you’re a senior and not feeling confident, maybe think about signing up for the December test if it’s not too late to sign up?
ShivVZG idk depending on my score I might cause yeah I am a senior. Oh and btw how well do you rate the strategy of going straight to the questions and using the line reference ones to answer the questions and reading the rest and answer the more general questions? And if I were to use this( the one you mentioned in this video) strategy how long should I be spending on each question?
Oh wait bro I think maybe I made it unclear. My strategy is to read the passage completely once, then answer the questions (this applies for all questions including the main idea questions). I would spend maybe 15 to 20 seconds per question but some questions take more (or less) time than others.
ShivVZG oh okay and how long on average does it take to finish the passage plus questions? And btw I totally understand your strategy. How I asked the questions was weird because I meant to ask two separate questions on two separate topics. Just forget the first part of what I said
@@khairulkafee9500 so to finish a passage + question set, it takes me around 7 to 10 minutes. To finish all questions + reading the passages, it takes around 42 to 45 minutes. That way I always have at least 15 to 20 minute extra at the end.
The reason why he's this fast isn't because of his tips alone. Finishing the section this fast can mean two things: he consistently reads (reads in his free time) or he's done a large amount of practice. I've been taking practice SAT tests (weekly) for about 5 months now and I, most of the time, still can't finish the reading section. However, I have become a lot faster, so I'll share some of my strategies: 1. If you're stuck on a question, skip it. At most, you should only spend about a minute per question on the reading section. You can either come back to it later or take a guess (educated or wild, there is no penalty for guessing). 2. Choose the type of prompt you're best at. On every test, there will be literature, science, and history (or politics); from past experience, choose the passage structure that you're most comfortable with and save the harder ones for later. This will help you score higher on the easier passages rather than rushing through them at the end because you spent too much time on a harder or less comfortable passage. 3. If you're absolutely running out of time, identify the vocabulary in context questions and answer them first before moving onto other questions; for example, questions like "In line 25, the word '___' most nearly means". The reason behind this is because these questions don't require you to read the entire passage for an answer. Just go back to the lines that the question instructs you and read around the sentence. By doing this, you can answer at least a couple more questions correct rather than spending your last minutes on questions asking for purpose (which leads to you guessing on the vocab in context questions). By the way, if you have read the whole passage, still answer these questions first and then move onto the questions that require full text understanding. There are several more strategies that you can use, but the strategies that you use are your choice. These three are the most suitable strategies for me. Try to incorporate these strategies next time you take a practice test and see which one works the best for you. If you're not taking the SAT this year, *READ*. Improving on the reading section is harder than improving on the math sections. I've incorporated some more reading into my life and now I can concentrate and actually understand what the passages are saying. Anyways, good luck to those of you taking the SAT!
i went from a 1190 psat 8 -> 1350 psat 9/10 - 1550 SAT (790 math 760 english) honestly if theres one piece of advice I would give its to not overthink and not panic - the first response you think of is the answer that you should go with because intuition always trumps overthinking and i'm serious, get good sleep and DO NOT OVERSTRESS during your actual sat. i got a 1500 on my first attempt without too much sleep (i just couldn't because of stress), and a 1550 on my second attempt without changing anything. all i did was sleep well the night before and not stress too much the day of because I felt like i had a backup net in case i did bad if you are about to prepare, TAKE PRACTICE TESTS!!! find practice tests and just take them over and over again. you should get to a point where you run out of tests, and thats the point where you can start redoing them. however, DO NOT do practice tests if you have not studied much - seeing a bad score in the beginning is very disheartening, so just do a bit of prep first and then try practice tests. but once you start practice tests, just keep doing them and do not stop and definitely do not go out of practice. even a bit is okay, as long as you do them consistently and finally, during the test, PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME. do not rush, do not think that you are running out of time. whatever pace you had on ur practice tests is the pace that you should use. i feel like that was the biggest difference between my first and second attempts. to end it off: if theres a method that works for you, do not change it because someone else says its better. i annotated on my reading section, but one of my friends who didnt got a higher score than me. what works for someone else does not necessarily work for you. and to find what works for you, u just gotta practice practice practice good luck my friends
nice suggestions. i am definitely bad at english. i tried to memorize the words but somehow i will forgot them. for me, the SAT exam is so scary and i always get nerves.
I hope I can improve my english score by 30-40 points. My range is currently around 640-690. Good Luck to those taking it in Dec. My last test as a senior ;/
Thanks a lot Dhruv!! : D I like responding to you guys (you all are like “internet friends” to me) and I know it’s hard studying for the SAT alone at times, so I try to help by replying back xD
I got 1480 only using strategies and I barely practiced them. This can be done guys, you can simplify the SAT to a matter of skills (knowing how to answer the questions rather than understanding much of the content). I did ~5 practice tests my first time and I would check my mistakes each time. I got in the habit of memorizing every type of question that would come up on the exam and tried to be as precise as I can while not wasting much time. You don't always have to be confident with all your answers, just answer to the best of your ability and don't spend too much time on questions. The second time I took the test I barely finished 2 practice tests as preparation for the second time, but that's when I got 1480 because I knew every kind of question that comes up on the exam. The SAT doesn't determine how smart you are, just how well you can apply test-taking methods.
I just took an SAT prep course and now this video is in my recommendations. Even though I’m a little freaked out by this , I am glad I discovered this channel. Nice video Shiv! You have just earned yourself a sub

i’m past my sat taking period but i’ve always done the tip about reading the entire passage first before answering and it’s always worked out for me. usually after reading it once, i don’t have to refer back for most of the passage’s questions and that really helps my speed!! i’ve also naturally done the tip about using the area of passage to narrow down evidence questions, but the rest of these tips would have definitely been helpful !
That's really cool we share some of the same strats! And I'm glad you think the other tips would have been helpful, thanks a lot for the feedback!! : D
I tried your technique and it was really useful... Like I read the whole passage thoroughly and I got 7 questions right out of the 10...this happened for the 1st time.. And as I went on practising I got all right in less time.... Thank you so much ❣️
Thanks for the tutorial man, our teacher gave us an SAT practice test today and I managed to increase my score from 550 to 640 and I managed to save at least 15 minutes. I am certain that this will be helpful to me in the future.
Appreciate the successful tactics to achieve higher results on the SAT, on this video and the previous upload, which seriously has increased my overall comprehension skills and practice scores. THANK YOU!! 🙌🏽🙏🏾❤️
when i tell you before this video, when i dowloaded previous psat tests and timed myself and did them, i would like run out of time before i could even start reading a whole passage, but after this video i immediately took one and finished like 10 minuted before time, big improvement on my accuracy too...Thank you and may God bless your young soul.We need more people like you in this would
Thank you so so so so much. I did this for the reading with 2 passages in it and I did all the questions correct!! And like you said because I read it for a longer time, I remembered lots of details!!!!
Quite impressive. If only I can do the math section in 8 minutes. My brain is infamously slow at doing math and every time I took the PSAT or SAT I timed out on the math section.
Thank you for this video! I recently got my score back and it was a 1530 and this video really helped me make a lot less mistakes in reading than I thought I would. I'm going to take it again this summer so I'm here watching this video again to make sure I don't forget anything loll.

ShivVZG I know, I was referring to the point that 95% of the time, the answer choice of deleting the portion is the answer if it pops up in the answer choices. You know what I mean?
Can u make a video about solving an entire reading test this will be very helpful since we can learn how to interpret passages while reading and we will know how to tackle every question
Definitely! And that’s a good point. I was actually planning on doing that for my next video xD I’ll try to get it done hopefully on Sunday. If not, then definitely by Tuesday.
Thanks for sharing. Love the tip on "common definitions are WRONG" and "X marks the spot." For your core theory, I think that can work well IF you have a great ability to comprehend at significant depth. Clearly you're a sharp dude and can do that... Not everyone (especially kids with limited English skills) is so capable.
Actually using the first tip plus a really good online textbook yielded me a 1530. This was after I took months trying to get from a 1450 - 1480 to 1500.... thanks for the help! Edit: This was after a few weeks of trying with a few hours of studying for SAT per day.
i keep watching your videos, and at first i thought you were like every other just and its not gunna work for me. BUT OMG. my score is usaully 35-37 out of 52 but after watching your video, my score is about 43-45. ik its not a huge jump in the score but you gave me so much confidence. your a life saver, the reading section is just so much easier thanks to you!!!
This was genuinely the most helpful video to watch. Taking my first practice test after this, I was able to finish half the section in less than 10 minutes, which was already a huge improvement. After practicing more and more, I can now finish the whole section in 15 minutes. (Which is fast for me), leaving me with so much extra time to review my answers and make sure I’ve got the best choices selected. These tips are seriously life changing and I’m praying for that 1500+
this is actually so true, i started reading the passages more carefully before answering any of the questions and my score increased so much however i'm skeptical about the primary definitions thing- a lot of the times it's true but not always

My dream college asks to try to get a 1200, which is above average. I am/was the kind of kid that honestly didn’t care about my grades thinking they don’t matter, caring more about friends and social media. Thank you so much for this!!
For a 1200, focus on mainly the math and writing sections, as they’re by far the easiest to improve on. The reading takes a long time to get better at compared to the rest of the test.
Thank you! I was doing a timed practice test and I was spending 11 to 16 minutes per passage which was obviously too much since I went over the 60 minutes. When I had only one passage and eight and a half minutes left I stopped a timer and started looking at your videos. I did the last passage in 9 and 1/2 minutes which was my best score
thank u for this. Final SAT this Saturday. Really want to do good, my English score is so bad. I know I'm capable of reaching the 1300+ range but English is such a tough section for me

I’m not joking man, I watched your video, took notes, took a reading passage khan academy example quiz thing and got a 11/11! And I would usually get a 7 or 8 or something! This is subscribe worthy, thank you! Edit: update, improved my score by 400 points! I can attribute a lot of that to this video. I also got into the 90th percentile of those who took the reading portion! Literally take notes on this video guys
I did the SAT I'm 2014. What you say is accurate. I completed every reading section 5 minutes earlier than the time given, but spent only 5 minutes on answering questions
5:00 Plugging in the words makes me overthink, personally speaking so there is a much better method to do that, I would read the sentence before and after the word without reading the word and see which word matches the context. History Passages - You have to deal with clunkier text, so I would recommend deconstructing the essay, or taking it apart sentence by sentence and analyzing it as if you are having a conversation with yourself or teaching it to someone else. Hope this helps!

You're now my favorite person for two reasons:
1. Big brain
2. Funny man
The reason why he's this fast isn't because of his tips alone. Finishing the section this fast can mean two things: he consistently reads (reads in his free time) or he's done a large amount of practice. I've been taking practice SAT tests (weekly) for about 5 months now and I, most of the time, still can't finish the reading section. However, I have become a lot faster, so I'll share some of my strategies:
I want to start reading books any recommendations?

Thank you very much hope u will always blissfull thank u
i went from a 1190 psat 8 -> 1350 psat 9/10 - 1550 SAT (790 math 760 english)
honestly if theres one piece of advice I would give its to not overthink and not panic - the first response you think of is the answer that you should go with because intuition always trumps overthinking
and i'm serious, get good sleep and DO NOT OVERSTRESS during your actual sat. i got a 1500 on my first attempt without too much sleep (i just couldn't because of stress), and a 1550 on my second attempt without changing anything. all i did was sleep well the night before and not stress too much the day of because I felt like i had a backup net in case i did bad
if you are about to prepare, TAKE PRACTICE TESTS!!! find practice tests and just take them over and over again. you should get to a point where you run out of tests, and thats the point where you can start redoing them. however, DO NOT do practice tests if you have not studied much - seeing a bad score in the beginning is very disheartening, so just do a bit of prep first and then try practice tests. but once you start practice tests, just keep doing them and do not stop and definitely do not go out of practice. even a bit is okay, as long as you do them consistently
and finally, during the test, PLEASE TAKE YOUR TIME. do not rush, do not think that you are running out of time. whatever pace you had on ur practice tests is the pace that you should use. i feel like that was the biggest difference between my first and second attempts.
to end it off: if theres a method that works for you, do not change it because someone else says its better. i annotated on my reading section, but one of my friends who didnt got a higher score than me. what works for someone else does not necessarily work for you. and to find what works for you, u just gotta practice practice practice
good luck my friends

i tried to memorize the words but somehow i will forgot them. for me, the SAT exam is so scary and i always get nerves.

The SAT doesn't determine how smart you are, just how well you can apply test-taking methods.

i’m past my sat taking period but i’ve always done the tip about reading the entire passage first before answering and it’s always worked out for me. usually after reading it once, i don’t have to refer back for most of the passage’s questions and that really helps my speed!! i’ve also naturally done the tip about using the area of passage to narrow down evidence questions, but the rest of these tips would have definitely been helpful !
That's really cool we share some of the same strats! And I'm glad you think the other tips would have been helpful, thanks a lot for the feedback!! : D

These tips are seriously life changing and I’m praying for that 1500+
this is actually so true, i started reading the passages more carefully before answering any of the questions and my score increased so much
however i'm skeptical about the primary definitions thing- a lot of the times it's true but not always

History Passages - You have to deal with clunkier text, so I would recommend deconstructing the essay, or taking it apart sentence by sentence and analyzing it as if you are having a conversation with yourself or teaching it to someone else.
Hope this helps!
