Let me say this...Houston is a monster of a city. Huge and urbanized in every way. Take the 45 from Dallas into Houston all the way to Galveston. An hour and a half minimum to navigate. All city. It's big, it's huge and it's the poster child for the term urban sprawl.

    Adopted from a Linkedin Post
1.) You must first learn to pronounce the city name, it's HOUston. Foreigners are still allowed to call it YOUston
2.) The morning rush hour is from 5:00 AM to noon. The evening rush hour is from noon to 7:00PM. Friday rush hour starts on Thursday morning.
3.) The minimum acceptable speed on i-45 is 80 MPH. On 99 & 59, your speed is expected to at least match the highway number. Anything else is considered "Wussy"
4.) Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Houston has itsown TR version. For example, Ferraris & Lamboz owned by sports stars go first at a 4-way stop. Cars/trucks with loudest mufflers go second. The trucks with the biggest tires go third. The HOV lanes are really designed for the slow Lousianians passing through who are used to hogging the lft lane everywhere.
5.) If you actually stop at a yellow light or stop sign, you will be rear-ended, cursed out, and possibly shot at.
6.) Never honk at anyone, ever! Seriously, it's another offense that can get you shot.
7.) Road construction is permanent. Detour barrels are moved around for your entertainment pleasure during the middle of the night to make the next day's driving a bit more exciting. Generally, city roads other than the main streets have more potholes & bumps (usually speed bumps) than most dirt roads in the country side.
8.) Watch carefully for road hazards such as drunks, ladders, possums, skunks, dogs, barrels, cons, furniture, cats, dogs, mattresses, shredded tires, squirrels, rabbits and cows
9.) Beware that spelling of street names may change from block to block. 610 may be South Loop West, East Loop, etc
10.) if someone has their turn signal on, wave them t the shoulder immediately to let hem know it has been "accidentally activated"
11.) If you are in the left lane and only driving at 75 in a 55-65 MPH zone, you are considered a road hazard and will be "flipped off" accordingly. If you return the flip, you'll be shot
MOST IMPORTANT: If you get lost, look for i-45, then you are somewhere in Houston
One last thing; have a full tank. You might have driven for two hours and still in Houston, just on the wrong side and have to take 610, Beltway 8 or Grand Parkway. And 59 is also 69, and i-10 is also Katy Free way. West & The BEast is also Baytown East Freway. And SH-99 is also Grand parkway, and I-45 South: Gulf Freeway, SH 249: Tomball Parkway and many many more
