  • @mikehatem9570
    @mikehatem9570 2 года назад +75

    Since I'm a Houstonian, to answer those that wonder why there are so few people on the streets, there are basically two reasons-one is that it's probably a Saturday or Sunday, and the other is that there is an extensive underground tunnel system that is air conditioned with plenty of shops and restaurants that connect different parts of downtown, so many people are walking down there during the week.
    I was stupid enough to move to this dirty European big city to live with my wife and the contrast is astounding. Here nothing gets painted, cleaned, grafitti is everywhere and nobody cares. Houston continues to beautify, renovate and make things more liveable, clean and esthetic. Downtown Houston even looks a lot better than it did when we were there last. God Bless Houston and the USA. I can't wait to go back to Houston, stay there and never look back

      Saturday and Sunday is when you should see people out the most. This city was poorly zoned and developed from 4 decades ago. It is literally dead no activated streets or corners on the backside of buildings and brick walls where there should be storefronts

    • @denislinnik
      @denislinnik 2 года назад +5

      I've just come back from Fort Worth, Texas. I had a 3h long walk there around 15-18 o'clock on a working day and saw in total only 6 people walking around, and there is no extensive underground system there. So I guess it's rather because of your crazy car-culture and getting absolutely everywhere by car, and as a consequence - there is nothing interesting down there for a pedestrian. I loved the experience though!
      And I'm also curious what European city you're talking about, because not at all every European city is dirty (rather there are some dirty exceptions), and my European experience is the opposite of yours.

      There’s a huge blind spot to the fact that if you make those poor areas look nice. They will soar to expensive prices and only the rich will live there. Many groups have protested projects cause they will push out minority residents. The sad part is if the city spends a lot on a poor area, the poor will be pushed out by the rich someplace else and the cycle endlessly continues

    When I lived in Downtown Houston in 2015 I think somebody told me the total resident population was only 8,000 residents. I'm sure it's more now but this is very typical of DT surface level, eerily vacant of pedestrians traffic. The underground is a bit more hussle and bussle but it's closed on the weekends.

      @NTL There weren't hardly any suburbs around Houston in the 70s' plus there was a oil bust because of Jimmy Carter, the 2nd worst president in history except for Biden. The thugs would come in from the east side and the southeast side and cause all sorts of crap but it ended in a few years. But as far as a major Democrat run city, it's the only one in the country so far that hasn't had major lootings and smash and grabs and burning down everything. The thugs went to the burbs, sent there by Lanier, and White and Brown and Turner, and all their sect 8 property ownings, now it's a free for all out there. Downtown is safe because of only that.
