The garden dates back to the early 19th century when it was established as a royal pleasure garden by King Kirti Sri Rajasinha of Kandy. However, it was later expanded and developed during the British colonial period under the direction of botanist Alexander Moon. In 1821, the garden was officially opened to the public.
The Royal Botanical Garden covers an area of approximately 147 acres and is situated along the banks of the Mahaweli River. It showcases a diverse collection of plants, trees, and flowers, with a focus on both indigenous and exotic species.
The Royal Botanical Garden is located approximately 5.5 kilometers west of Kandy and is easily accessible by road. It is open to visitors throughout the year, and the best time to visit is during the morning or late afternoon when the weather is cooler.
The Royal Botanical Garden is home to an impressive array of flora, with over 4,000 species of plants, including exotic orchids, colorful roses, giant palms, and towering trees. It serves as a vital conservation site for many endemic and endangered plant species in Sri Lanka.
In addition to its diverse plant life, the garden is also home to various bird species, butterflies, and other small animals, adding to the biodiversity of the area.
