It was tight.. the smaller room there wasn't large.. I was in that room with Les Pyne's band & Simon was in the big room with Chopyn a band that he was in with Ray Russell.. They'd both played on Les's album that we were rehearing to tour.. @@andywharam4846
I remember an interview with Jeff Beck back in 1982, and Beck was demoing his latest LP with a brand new Linn Drum, and he said something like, "I made the drum tracks so complicated that only Simon Phillips could play them, so I supposed I should hire him." Nice compliment from a true Rock God.
I can't believe this interview is happening. I discovered Smallcreep's Day at a used record shop in LA back around 1985, one of the best finds ever. But I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk about it! Peter Gabriel told his story on TLLDOB, Mike Rutherford told his story on SD, a job well done.
Anyone that knows Simon’s work knows that he’s phenomenal. But in my opinion, he STILL doesn’t get enough praise. I’ve never been less than completely blown away by his work. Especially his work on Pete Townshend’s Deep End shows back in ‘85-‘86.
This is an amazing interview. Simon remains one of my biggest influences along with Phil Collins. So glad to hear he's writing a book. It'll be fantastic. He's been there and back.
In the early 2000’s I did work for Toto and I always loved talking to Simon; I was a huge fan. I had to stop asking him about making this record. He remembered it well enough but not like me as I’ve always been a fanatic for it. Simon is one of the nicest guys you could ever hope to meet.
For 30 years I've been saying the perfect drummer for Genesis would have been Simon Phillips he has that English feel sitting comfortably at the back of the beat
James Roman - funny, I never thought about Simon. But you’re absolutely right; in fact, he’s actually a tighter drummer than Phil. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Phil’s drumming style. But it’s a slightly sloppy style, kind of patterned after Keith Moon, of whom Phil was a big fan. Simon would have fit the bill perfectly, I think!
There was a fair bit of cloak and dagger as the transition between Gabriel era/Collins era line ups were set. For example: I have heard that the band had one guy in mind to take over vocals, Phil's words: 'our last great hope' Who was that person...? Nobody ever says...who the hell was that??! I love these mini-docx videos. Smallcreeps is one of my favorite albums from that time. Agree with Simon, drums are all muddy in the final mix. Would love to see this get remixed!!!
I’ve listened to/read many interviews with wonderfully down-to-earth Mike Rutherford. Imo, he’s too hard on Genesis’ catalog of music, so the lack of enthusiasm for Smallcreep’s Day shouldn’t surprise me, but it’s undeserved. Smallcreep’s Day is a phenomenal prog concept work!
One of my favorite drummers, and what a great guy! Yeah, I still listen to "Out into the daylight." A great, great tune - always makes me happy... Thanks for posting this!
Thank you so much John for doing these marvelous interviews with Simon Phillips, Bill Bruford, Jon Anderson, JR Robinson, Steve Hackett...... All of them are amazing!!!! Thank you!!!!
The reaction Simon Phillips has to his own somehow forgotten masterpiece is priceless! John, you are a GREAT interviewer, allowing Simon time to reacquaint himself to his past greatness, you always give whomever you interview time to follow their thoughts, on or off topic- which often leads to surprising and revealing places!
Simon is one of my favourite drummers. Check out his work with the Hiromi Trio. Amazing piano and superb drumming by mr Phillips. I was lucky to see them live.
I find it really fascinating that nor Simon Phillips or Noel Macala wouldn't have almost any recollection of having recorded one of the coolest and most colossal Prog Rock album of all times with Mike Rutherford! Great stuff on your channel BTW, thanks!
I'm loving these interviews with Simon... I find it far more fascinating to hear his story as a musician, rather than the usual, "how do you tune your kit, what snare is that?".
Thanks for the reminder to go back and listen to this highly underrated drummer. I could totally see Simon killing it behind the Genesis kit. There are some fills on that album.
Also while I remember, the vocals of the superb Noel McCalla opened me up to this voice. One of the most underrated voices to come out of the UK. His body of work with Manfred Mann's Earthband is a joy to listen to. Along with Chris Thompson, a defining voice of the Earthband. Last I saw he was doing a Stevie Wonder show in the UK. This guy did the perfect job with Rutherford's songs.
This interview is exactly the one i would asked Simon about this too... and now it is there.. and It is so funny to see how this song which is a Drummers dream for everyone,(at least to me as much as to Rick) to Simon is just another job he did, which he doesnt even remember.. :))
WOW! LOVE Simon Phillips, LOVE Smallcreep’s Day! This is THE BEST interview clip on this channel, THANK YOU!! Mike Rutherford needs to reconsider re-releasing that album, he’s nuts for blowing it off. That’s actually incredibly inconsiderate, not only to his fans, but also to the musicians who played on that album. I like Mike, but he’s a peculiar character.
Great discovery that Simon could be a replacement for Bruford. Well, since Mike doesn't want to know anything about "Smallcrep's day", we will have to be the musicians who are fans of this album who will have to pay tribute to him... I'm going to do it. Thanks John!!!!
Out Into The Daylight for me is the best track on the album. Small Creeps Day is Mike Rutherford's best solo album. I bought this album when first released and I think thats when I first noticed Simon's brilliant drumming. I have a very rare copy on cd also. Never knew Simon got a call from Phil to tour after Bill left, before Chester joined. Great interview. Thank you!👍😊
Wow, Nothing against Thompson or Bruford, both great drummers! But I always thought Simon would have really been a good fit with Genesis! Wow, woulda coulda shoulda! But if he took that gig, he might not he may nit have had time to do all the other great stuff he has done over the years! Eithe way, IM A BIG FAN!! 👍🥁👍
Great interview with an awesomely classy Mr. S.P. Also the way he speaks (pronounces his English) he is so easy to understand which isn't always true for Mike R. And think he played on Smallcreep's Day not long after he had recorded Sin After Sin with Judas Priest. And not long after: a debut solo album with Michael Schenker. All that despite admitting he liked being more jazzy....
So many memories of Simon Phillips, through his incarnations via various albums/bands etc. He seems like such a cool, but very very experienced musician. Top man and a truly great drummer!
That's awesome! I've been a big Simon fan for many years, have met him a handful of times, been in masterclasses with him, etc. - and I haven't heard this story. Thank you for sharing!
GREAT interview!!! I got to speak to Simon one on one at NAMM about 15 years ago and I asked him if genesis ever asked him to be touring drummer. He told me the same story he told you. I was blown away that he didn’t like the genesis music much at that time.
Simon’s drumming is phenomenal and I agree that playing Out into the Daylight is the hardest bit ever, to learn. And yet such a huge inspiration. Smallcreep’s Day is my favourite record, above all
Simon had a huge hand in the crafting of the Jeff Beck album "There & Back". If anyone reading this hasn't heard it, then CHECK IT OUT! You will be blown away by the songs and the drumming, oh, and the guitars too.
You forgot how integral Tony Hymas and even Jan Hammer were to the writing (major composers over Beck and Phillips) and aural soundscape. I was fortunate to see the There and Back tour having been a huge fan since Blow and Blow and subsequently a huge Simon fan as well. On a related note, Collins basically fired Bruford mid tour cuz the band wanted the security of hearing a Collins replicator on stage each night. Chester seemed happy to simplify and fit that bill, but creative geniuses like Bruford and Philips would never be confined or appreciated in that limited space.
This number from this particular album is great. I always thought it was the best song on the album, because of the same reasons. The speed, the fills everything. So funny that, searching for the first time on RUclips, you mention this song right away. 😄
The first interview I've ever seen with Simon -- what a lovely bloke! That book he's planning sounds like it will be a damn good read. I'll look out for his take on playing with 801, whose live album remains one of my all-time favourites.
Thanks John i felt pretty much the same as you about out in the daylight when released and it was absolutely wonderful seeing Simon rediscovering his drumming of so many years ago. Thank you!
Rob Henrit of Argent (and latter day Kinks) was also invited to join Genesis. Phil Collins is heard on Argent's final studio album, 'Counterpoints', where he filled in for an ill (hepatitis) Henrit and later did all the drumming on Rod Argent's debut solo album, 'Moving Home'.
I met Simon at "Perillous Journey" by Gordon Giltrap. I fell in love of his drumming inmediatelly. The 6/8 groove is also my favourite one for drumming, it gives you great possibilities, really funny.
The first time I heard Simon was on radio on 1977 (I think), playing "Heartsong" from Gordon Giltrap's album "Perilous Journey". OMG this is something I didn't know...talking about close encounters. Don't get me wrong, I love Chester (!), with Simon it would have been a completely different experience though. Just imagine...Simon with Genesis... wow that is special
Chester plus Phil plus Simon in the same rehearsal space with 2 Octoplus kits to boot? That sounds pretty damned near heaven on earth!
Absolutely Mathew, it would be a revolutionary my friend.

This video is stellar. Terrific anecdotes.
I’m so happy that Simon was so truthful about his feelings in Genesis and Phil. Such the professional and a titan among drummers.
This is an amazing interview. Simon remains one of my biggest influences along with Phil Collins. So glad to hear he's writing a book. It'll be fantastic. He's been there and back.

what a great, no nonsense, no ass kissing interview... FANTASTIC !! thank you kindly.
Simon's interviews are as good as his playing. Thx for this.
For 30 years I've been saying the perfect drummer for Genesis would have been Simon Phillips he has that English feel sitting comfortably at the back of the beat
James Roman so did Phil apparently. Never heard of Phil calling any other drummers than Chester.

This is probably the first time news of the Genesis invitation has been made public!

Simon Phil & Cheater- I'm good with that.
Never knew how Chester came about working with Genesis. You learn something every day!
One of my favorite drummers, and what a great guy! Yeah, I still listen to "Out into the daylight." A great, great tune - always makes me happy... Thanks for posting this!

I listened to smallcreep yesterday for the first time. Fantastic album
Simon is one of my favourite drummers. Check out his work with the Hiromi Trio. Amazing piano and superb drumming by mr Phillips. I was lucky to see them live.
Hiromi trio
Fascinating story about Simon, Genesis and Brand X. I had no idea about this. 😇
Imagine recording a drum track as fantastic as "out into the daylight", and then needing someone to jog your memory about it. What a player!
Hahah, Simon is so real, going online, listening to the song he didn't remember during an interview through his laptop speakers. :D
I find it really fascinating that nor Simon Phillips or Noel Macala wouldn't have almost any recollection of having recorded one of the coolest and most colossal Prog Rock album of all times with Mike Rutherford! Great stuff on your channel BTW, thanks!
Musicians that work, work a LOT. And Smallcreeps didn't exactly set any charts on fire.
I'm loving these interviews with Simon... I find it far more fascinating to hear his story as a musician, rather than the usual, "how do you tune your kit, what snare is that?".
This is worth GOLD. Simon Phillips has such a rich vast musical repertoire... plus he's the nicest gentleman
Simply the best interview! Fantastic! Thank you very much.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many fans of the album. I didn't realize you guys were out there.
Fantastic! And the Genesis-audition-thing is new to me too - would probably have been a great fit
Super stuff!
Thanks! Cheers!
✌️🤠💥🌟🥁🙏
It must be Smallcreeps Day....Day!
I scored a vinyl of this album off eBay yesterday.
What a record.
Come on Mike Rutherford, revisit this please!
Person Of Interest YES ... PLEASE!
(We said “please”!) 😳
Thanks for the reminder to go back and listen to this highly underrated drummer. I could totally see Simon killing it behind the Genesis kit. There are some fills on that album.
Smalls cress- Day is a great album, and Out In THe Daylight is a phenomenal track.
Definitely buying Simon's book. Cannot wait!

I love his work with Pete Townshend on White City and Iron Man... I'm not a drummer, but I know him because he's so great
He is along with Pino Palladino GREAT on “White City”.
WOW! LOVE Simon Phillips, LOVE Smallcreep’s Day! This is THE BEST interview clip on this channel, THANK YOU!! always loved smallcreeps day! thanks for that !!
I love the album as well. ran right out and bought it as soon as it hit the shelves.
Simon, your work on Small Creeps is INSPIRATIONAL! And Mike's best work by light years.
Great discovery that Simon could be a replacement for Bruford.
Well, since Mike doesn't want to know anything about "Smallcrep's day", we will have to be the musicians who are fans of this album who will have to pay tribute to him... I'm going to do it. Thanks John!!!!

I saw Simon live in 1984 with Mike Oldfield.
Heard this tour in a different venue. Awesome!
I like Simon Phillips. And I am a guitar player.
That's awesome! I've been a big Simon fan for many years, have met him a handful of times, been in masterclasses with him, etc. - and I haven't heard this story. Thank you for sharing!
Love that album...played it often !!!
This guy is an awesome drummer

Can you imagine the drum duets with Phil if he'd joined Genesis in 76????
CHERRY RED Records is the label that wants to re-release that Mike Rutherford album, SMALLCREEPS DAY.
Great interview! I've been a Simon Phillips fan for many years, I didn't know about the Genesis invite and I'm a fan of theirs as well.
I met Simon at "Perillous Journey" by Gordon Giltrap. I fell in love of his drumming inmediatelly.
The 6/8 groove is also my favourite one for drumming, it gives you great possibilities, really funny.

Those stories are awesome.....wow!!!
Aside from being a phenomenal drummer Simon is also a class act.
What a fantastic insight into one of my favourite albums (smallcreeps) & Genesis & Brand X. Brilliant interview, loving this channel. 👍🏻
If I could only keep one of my over 450 cds--it would probably be Smallcreep's Day.
One of your best I think , John. Thanks
Great interview !!!
John,
Chuck here; i've seen e few of your videos but when I see Simon and then "Small Creep's Day" , I couldn't open it fast enough
This album is also one of my ALL TIME FAV's.
Just as you quoted that the instrumental Coming in to Daylite changed your life, so did the track "Time and Time Again" [I think that is the name] change mine,
I could not get enough of that album
I was in to Genesis at that time big time and bought the LP and I think I found the cassette NO CD however was found; what I did was downlload the album to Itune's thru a turntable they made to perform that function.
I wonder if you've heard any more about a re-release of the album [if any]. I know this comes almost 2 yrs after this you tube of yours was out but I hope you get back to me
Thank you so much for all you do with your channel
Peace out and God Bless
So awesome thanks 🙏
Great interview ! Looking forward to his book project !
That was fascinating to hear Simon Philips talking about Mike & Small creeps day, I have both the the record & cd albums, it would have been fantastic to see & hear Simon, Phil & Chester say playing drums together to the solo part of Dance on a volcano 🌋 for example, Wow that would be interesting to hear them in perfect synchronization & the millions of fans commenting to the outcome.
Thanks for the video, it was fascinating.
What a great interview John!!!! Thanks for this....
I can remember finding a cassette of Smallcreeps Day in a sale bin at the HMV store in London, back in the day. I slipped it into my Sony Walkman that day and I must have listened to that album every day for the next few years. What Simon adds to those songs is just superb. The kit Tama kit Simon is referring to at the beginning of this clip can be seen in the Pete Townshend video for “Let My Love Open the Door”.
Perfect
I also like SD. I told Mike when I met him in Bahrain a few yeas ago. He was surprised !
Great interview! Really great!
GREAT INTERVIEW!!!.
That was a cool story, THANK YOU
Loved all these Simon interviews! I read like 1 book per decade (last one being Lukather’s). This will be my next. 😄
Great stuff!
OMG this is something I didn't know...talking about close encounters. Don't get me wrong, I love Chester (!), with Simon it would have been a completely different experience though. Just imagine...Simon with Genesis... wow that is special
Of days gone bye -It will be near impossible to replicate this type of journeyman musical career again --
Great! So much better to have a decent length interview.
