It's funny that with that childhood he ended up playing in Toto where almost all the members had experienced the same thing. I can imagine a conversation between them saying "my father took me to the sessions when I was 5 years old" - and 3 more guys answering "Me too".
~~ so many great musicians had parents who were either musicians themselves - or were at least big fans of music and the arts in general - and they encouraged their children to play instruments - get lessons - play in bands or orchestras etc .. - more parents need to be that way ..

You can’t beat this pedigree. Imprinted with music and the drum kit so early on. Almost like he had no choice but to hit the drums for a living. Amazing.
And now I'm back in 1980 in my Triumph Vitesse thundering along to my summer season with "There And Back" enthralling me on my car cassette system. Magic - to this day.
Everyone should do themselves a favor and listen to Space Boogie from Jeff Beck’s There and Back album. Simon was 23 when he played on this album.. it’ll blow your mind. Gifted for sure.
And the studio version of 'Sasquatch' by Camel. Simon was brought in as a session player for that. Bassist David Paton (Pilot, Kate Bush, Alan Parsons Projects etc.) was with the band at that time (he sings on 'Heroes') and commented that someone arrived at the studio and set up Simon's big kit, then Simon laid down the track in a single take. Paton noted that Simon had obviously done his homework prior to the session. There is a fine live video circa '83 on RUclips with Paul Burgess (10cc) on drums. And there is a ripping live version on Camels' 'On the Road '82' CD that includes Paton with fellow Pilot and Alan Parsons Project drummer Stu Tosh (Pilot were the APP on the first album, with Paton and guitarist Ian Bairnson staying on).
My daughter played me a ‘lost track’ from the musical Evita. She said I should listen to it as the drumming was “awesome”. As I heard it for the first time ever I couldn’t help but agree with her, and, clearly the drummer was someone special. I checked the credits online and…(drum roll)….it’s Simon!!! Check it out for yourself, song is called: Dangerous Jade
Well done, Simon! Thanks for continuing to do interviews on youTube. Frankly, it's the only way I can learn about my heroes in the music business. These days it's all about hip-hop and the wankers who sit behind a computer all day making beats. Later for that. In any case, thanks to everyone for making this video available for us all to learn from.
Cheers Simon! I never forget back in 1996 we were on the same flight from Dallas to L.A. I was a bit Star stuck and didn't want to bug you after a long tiring Flight. I figured you were on the way back to Fantom Studios. I wished I would of talked to you and would of loved to be in the Studio just to hang out. Cheers Mate!!🥁🤩
~~ Simon is one of my all-time favorite drummers - but people young and old need to learn to place their camera's at a better height - its not that we don't want to look up your nose to see if you keep things neat & trim - well actually we don't really want to look up there ..
I never liked the headband look even though I totally understand why he wore it, sweat in the eyes is quite sore and would mess with your concentration.exellent drummer often overlooked but never underestimated.
What a great story! I didnt know any of this background to simons career. Guys a legend!
Love this interview. I've been a huge fan of his since the 70's! Amazing drummer!!

Simon seems a very down to Earth lad for such a genius drummer! One of my Top 10 of all time he can play anything as we all know!

I remember seeing Simon play in a band called " Chopyn" in the mid 70s in Leeds. They supported ELO at the time.
One of the greatest drummers.👍

Thank you for this, would love to see more of Mr Phillips
Glad you enjoyed it. There's 4 or 5 more videos on our channel with Simon, if you'd care to check them out 👍🤘
Love hearing these stories from Simon. Definitely one of my favourite drummers. His ‘Party In Simon’s Pants’ in 17/8 time with Luke is just awesome!
Down to earth guy, out of this world drummer.

I think this is the 3rd or 4th video you've posted speaking with Simon, all of them are fascinating! Thank you for sharing this
My pleasure!
Thanks for a well conducted interview with a most remarkable musician, and engineer. Really well done!

incredible!
My dad had an album of his fathers....I can remember Simon played drums on one side of the album.... not sure where it went too! 😄

Like to hear some of his tales working with Duncan Browne, Tony Hymas and John Giblin etc.
Lol, cool, turns out my dad who also started gigging very early on played with both Simon and his dad. I also had to secretly play rock music heh
Brilliant drummer.

His background sounds very similar to Ian Paice of Deep Purple, playing in a Jazz / Dance band with his father .
