Deen is blessed with talent that places him in a very elite group with Phil Collins. Both Deen and Phil are extremely talented drummers and both are strong enough singers to be lead singers. Singing a song such as this while playing the drum parts Deen is playing is simply amazing.
Deen is far superior to Phil Collins. Listening to Collins' soul-less voice is like staring at a dead fish. Nothing special, and after a while it stinks. Deen knows how to drive a song and bring it to life.
Add this one to the list of Journey songs that Deen totally outshines Arnel on. Deen is having fun with this song, and it shows. Singing this song as well as Deen does is something few people can do. Playing drums like Deen does is also somethign few people can do. Singing and playing at the same time at the level Deen does puts him in a very elite league with few peers.
I saw them in Switzerland in 2007 and he sang's many song's of Journey included this song and Still they ride and Faithfully....great voice. In February i'll finaly see the show of the singer Steve Augeri in Sao Paulo l....i love Journey band..

As far as being asked back after he got clean, I’m not sure. I thought it was because he was so busy with side projects and bands he loved being a part of. He’s back now, though. :)

Arnel also struggles to keep his accent from over coloring his vowels. Arnel sings like he is working. On the other hand, Deen sings like he is having fun and he is singing from his heart and he is himself while still emulating Steve Perry.

I am also an Earth, Wind & Fire fan and was at first baffled by Maurice White's absence from that group, but like EWF, Journey manages to maintain its legacy

I will say that as far as the drumming goes, Steve Smith's interpretation is a bit more techincal, but Deen does manage to keep his own here.
BassmanII Steve Smith isn’t singing at the same time. I’m sure Deen could do it easily if he wasn’t singing. It’s not like Steve Smith can sing and play at the same time.
