I am so glad there are much more games now that support rotary controls. I always imagined Time Pilot and Asteroids being played with a rotary controller. I often fantasized or wished that the Jaguar controller came with the rotary controller and was placed where the keypad is in, similar to how the N64 shipped with its analog joystick. If this was the case, more games would have utilized it as standard and would have given the Jaguar a more unique control scheme. For instance, for humans, the rotary controller would be used to select the character, for lemmings, you would be able to select commands easily via rotary controller. Games like Doom and Aliens vs Predator, you may be able to turn side-to-side, step side-to-side, or even select weapons easily using rotary controller, Driving games such as Super Burn Out would have been given a steering wheel, and games like Zero 5's trench run would be wonderful on rotary control. Game magazines in its day lambasted Atari's choice of adding the keypad. I think if it were rotary, Atari would have been praised since their games would have a unique control mechanism which none of its competitors would have had at that time. Unitl now, the only consoles with Rotary controls are Atari 2600 and Jaguar I think.
I remember my big brother telling me stories about the Jaguar back in the late 90’s and it seemed like just a myth or a legend really. As i couldnt find any info in the old game magazines i had access to and never saw the console in game stores or even the old games on store shelves etc so to me, it wasn’t even real. The internet changed everything haha im glad these old consoles and games aren’t lost to time and now I get to actually play these games through modern emulation! Truly amazing times we’re living in and thanks for the video man 🤘🔥💯🙏
I love my Atari Jaguar collection that I built around 1998, today I try to maintain a bit of the legacy by purchasing everything that Jeff Minter releases on Steam (his games have the pure Jaguar vibe) and also the conversions from Atari Age people.
This is awesome! Had no idea there were so many games compatible with rotary controls. I need to get a couple of those controllers. Tempest 2000 is an amazing co-op game!
I just played my first spinner game arkanoid in a barcade. Instantly hooked. Love how it feels and so fun. Might get a usb mame spinner to play some more.
What should happen is a conversion kit for the 5200 controllers (specifically the trackball!) To the Jaguar... would open up some awesome. Though, from what I understand, the earlier Jaguar models had a chip for allowing analog controllers, whereas the newer ones do not. So that may be an issue.
It would be really cool to see a USB version of this controller. I know you can technically use them with a adapter and all of that but that's kind of a pain. Screens are really cheap these days a Jag controller with a screen so you can use digital templates and a rotary controller would be awesome!
I've often thought, why doesn't anyone invent a new rotary controller for racing games, instead of using a standard controller, a rotary controller as used for radio controlled cars could work really well for steering. A sort of halfway house between a controller and a wheel.
I grew up with an Atari 2600 and I still have games for it. Donkey Kong Frogger Combat Demon Attack Pitfall Adventure Do you think they maybe with something?
I repair electronics for a living and still managed to botch the rotary mod myself. It worked for a few weeks, then started getting wonky, so after unsoldering the mod, controller never worked properly again :(
I'm surprised this wasn't an official release back in the day. Atari did love their twisty knob controllers!
I wish they made a spinner and trackball controller for the modern consoles with updated classics that take advantage of them.
Agreed. I’d love to play Missile Command, Crystal Castles, Centipede, or Marble Madness with a trackball.
Love my Jaguar! So underrated. I never tried a rotary controller with Tempest, next on my list!🎉
Awesome video. I have the similar controller but it's the Sega Genesis version just for playing Tempest 2000 on the Atari Jaguar.
Very cool!

Very nice, saw the post on AtariAge about the rotary controller ... guess I might need one 😅🎉 Cheers!
This looks cool😊
Never played this before the Atari Jaguar

Good job 🧡🙏🏼
Thank you 🙌

The Jag is a console to borrow from a friend for a week.

I am the one person in the universe that found rotary control on T2K too sensitive, so went back to the d-pad 😐
Looks like the guys who released the new Atari console could've just skipped the R&D and just re-released the Jaguar with a USB port.
Nice but needed 6 face buttons
Cool
Does Big PEmu support rotary controls for emulator use
I think so
@@johnhancockretro fantastic video / appreciate it
👍👍™️
Americans pronounce Jaguar so weird. Ever since Rick&Morty with Jaguar ive noticed its pronounced like a totally different word!
It's like it's pronounced with a Y instead of a U
Jag-why-arr
Jag-yoo-arr
