Gene is telling the truth about the origins of what we considered to be House music. I recall being introduced to house music through basement parties via a 3 x 5 index card. Only cost 25cents to get into someone's basement. I was very young around 12 or 13 in '82. Fun fun times. We were hooked on the scene but had no idea that House would become what it is today. Also, I'm glad the interviewer asked questions about Jamie Principle because one of my favorite 🏠 songs is Waiting on my Angel.
If I haven’t said it to him PERSONALLY enough, I’d publicly say G.H. is one of our most truest procurers of the culture. Non-biased, non-egotistical approach (which is warranted) with the most genuine & broadest relationships to those involved to give a wide perspective of what was happening for the entire era. We should protect him & gather as much as possible of his time, talents, & resources as he would allow. I find him accountable for every part of the genre, the scene (commercial & underground). It is nothing but rewarding what he brings to the table as a Housetorian. I just wanted that to be put for the record. Not many left as genuine as this Brother. 👊🏾🖤💫🙏🏾
I was super excited when I saw Gene Hunt was going to be on because I thought, there’s a brother that we never get to hear his story. He’s re-released a few of those reel to reel only classics and just listening to him talk about what he has on vinyl and reel you just wish you could take a trip to the basement and hear those records. Years ago Gene was playing at The Family Den and he played a version of Clouds by Chaka Khan with just the drums and Chaka singing over the top. I came to the booth and asked him for a copy and after watching this episode now I know why I didn’t get it 😂😂. The man is a legend and I love him dearly for what he’s done for the culture. Thank you Mo for this
I said the same thing about Jamie Principal in the Frankie/House episode of Unsung. Jamie was the genre’s version of Prince. This is also the first interview I’ve seen where someone else mentioned the On And On tracks on the flip side of the Jesse Saunders record. Over the years a lot of DJs played 5A and 1A more than On And On itself
Jaime Principle like Prince? I can't really agree. Jaime in a class all by himself. We were jackin' to Jaime before Prince came along. Prince was kinda slightly younger generation. Only similarity to me is the singing in falsetto.
Enjoy Gene Hunt's mixing, but didn't really get a lot out of this interview other than how he got his start in the industry. One of the less-memorable interviews in this series, IMO, but that's ok... I know they can't all be stellar.
