Is The Tudor Black Bay 54 Still THE Black Bay To Get In 2024? 3 Reasons Why It Absolutely Is

  • There's something that happens to all watch nuts out there. A new release comes out and you are tempted by it and watches that once felt secure are being looked at with thoughts of selling it for the new release Or maybe a new release comes out and it makes you appreciate a particular watch and your love for that watch actually increases. I’ve been on both ends and both provide clarity about how you actually feel about your watches.
So when Tudor released the new Black Bay 58 GMT and the Black Bay 41 Monochrome they definitely piqued my interest BUT my love for my Black Bay 54 has increased since the release. That got me thinking why that's the case given how both releases are very much in my wheelhouse, a gmt with a bezel, and a crispy black and white diver. Lots to like here. In this video I’m going to get into why I think in 2024, despite all the releases, that the BB54 is still the Black Bay to get and that's considering that I’ve owned 4 BBs. Let me know what you think!

I’m on team BB58 navy blue. It’s the best looking BB for me because the blue is beautiful and there’s no gilt/fauxtina. I also got the Uncle Straps half link and the Steel Reef adjustable clasp extension. Fits great on my wrist and no more desire for a T-fit clasp. This is a keeper now.

Nice one TWI. I've still not tried or even seen the 54 in the flesh probably because I'm more than happy with my 58. It's great seeing your video of the 54's dial as it looks almost identical finishing to my Pelagos 39 sunburst texture that I also love. Interestingly some YT reviewers berated the Pelagos 39 dial upon release (possibly some of those cut and past reviews out there, thankfully you are not one of them and that's a good thing) anyway I love the look of the 54 and the smaller super light and less retro Pelagos, they are different enough watches that in my opinion can have a place in the same collection if you can afford and justify it. Maybe if I move some of my less worn watches on I'll take a look at the 54 as I'm pretty sure I'll love it but I can't really justify a 58 and a 54.

It never was. I think as a 1 watch collection the 54 is perfect. However, if you have a multiple watch collection, you may want something with a little more spice because for all its goodness, the 54 is a very boring looking watch at least when compared to the 58. Unlike the 54, the 58 is not an exact replica of back catalog Tudor, it is its own thing. The gilted bezel adds a nice warmth and harmony with the gold on the dial, the red triangle harkens back to the Tudor Big Crown and serves to break up the monotony of the watch. I also find the more refined coin edge bezel and matching crown very elegant. It is a very special watch that isn’t an exact replica.

The 58 is so well made and perfectly proportioned for a sports watch. It borrows from classic Tudors and Rolex without being a slave to an exact copy . It really is it’s own thing. The gilt bezel gives the 58 a warm feel, the red triangle offers a pop of color paying homage to the Rolex Big Crown, the chunky coin edge crown is so satisfying to wind with a refined matching coin edge bezel and I love the snow flake seconds hand. It’s different from the more traditional lollipop style. By the way, 39 mm is on the smaller side for a modern sized sports watch. I think anything smaller is playing vintage territory.

Unpopular take from a member of the community: This Black Bay watch is bewilderingly boring given the screen time it gets on social media. It's inception was to be an homage watch of Rolex Submariner for a discount. Yet watch snobs dismiss other homages by more affordable brands? Hmmm. Weird.
This Tudor has zero inhouse heritage and even now it's made by acquired movement maker. That's not a big deal but for $4,500 (what I paid for my first Rolex Submariner when Daytona's could be had for under $12k) way back in the Britney Spears olden days of silent films and steam engine cars. Now Rolex want $15k for a 3 hand movement?? and the Tudor is hocked on social media as an "amazing bargain" for the current equivalent of a months pay? 😂
Back in the early 2000s (you know when the pyramids had just been completed) a coax Omega Speedmaster with an entire Chronograph movement by an undisputed watch making genius could be found for about $1200.... a week's pay for the average big city college grad. So we've gone from a week to a month's pay and it's not even for the Rolex it's for the Rolex homage. Man oh Man...the short-sightedness of this Swiss cost inflation on Gen Z who can barely rub two nickels together and most have never even owned a non-digital watch..from Casio G Shock or Calculator watch to Apple watch. Soon this will be a middle aged Gen X and Millenials hobby.
    P.S.
Tudor BB Chrono is the best deal. At least you get a Chronograph. Or the Pelagos which can stand as its own design independently of Rolex. Or save up for the Ranger Chrono which I think will become a very sought after watch as the Daytona reaches absurdity pricing.

@@RJMac1982 Well that's rather simple. You can call the Rolex Sub 5513 more vintage (it's a 1987 watch) than real tool watch (anymore). I prefer not to use it for physical work, water skiing, swimming, motorbike riding,... . So it's more on my wrist on dress watch occasions. I agree that's a bit of a shame. For me the BB54 does the real tool watch thing perfectly. I don't have to worry about a scratch (or more)... . A Rolex sub 124060 would do that job as well but for me it's too big...
