    the Scamline is NOT the first automated, driverless public rail system in the US. The Las Vegas monorail has been in operation since 1995, and in its present form since 2002. Tren Urbano in San Juan has been in operation since 2004. It was designed from the beginning to be capable of fully automated, driverless operation, but to date they have chosen to have an operator on board for security reasons.
