Back on 75 is a song by 'Jungle' from the later 2000s. You should check out their video of performing the song live on the Brit Awards. But Ren makes it his own!
The greatest falsetto singer of the era was, Smokey Robinson, with the Miracles. Ren has his voice down. Ren is more than a singer, he's a historical vocal student. YES, Ren wrote the rap.
LOL The rap segment Ren wrote himself. This is an amalgem of Jungle, Ren and Sting. Somehow Ren makes it flow smoothly such that you find it hard to differentiate at times. I love Ren's utter versatility.
Loved this reaction! Subscribed, and I will be back for more! Yeah, he was smoking rather heavily at that time. He stops and starts all the time. You are very knowledgeable!
That last part on the low Ren vocals I would call "the panty dropping voice". When you said " to be drenched ...... in that tone. 😆 Breathe....breathe... 😯 With an awkward......... pause. Great reaction and breakdown
Jungle does Back on 74, there's a channel called Jungle4eva that has their official video which is so worth the watch. Unbelievable dance choreography and also shot in one take. Great reaction, this is one of my favorites of Ren of all his songs, I can't get tired of it
Also, Ren has smoked for some time, quit for health reasons, but has had a few celebratory smokes since, but for the most part doesn’t due to his therapies.
I too at first thought that he made a mistake with the lyrics of Message in a Bottle.. but then I remember Ren loves The Police. And if you're a Police fan, that wouldn't happen. I'm a big Police fan and I noticed. In your intro you said you were too.. Now I know it's true, since you're the only one who reacted to this that noticed.. Anyway, once I knew Ren couldn't make that silly mistake, I listened again.. I believe he flipped it intentionally, because even flipped, it still made sense, doesn't it? That was a brilliant flip, and I'm happy you noticed that. 😊
Kai Lacey Bass guitar and part of Rens team Silvia Mwenze and Scarlett Fae are singers from Brighton in the UK Ren lived there from early twenties to January last year before starting medical treatment in Calgary Canada which he finishes in June
You're the first reactor I've seen that caught his transposition of the castaway and lonely day lyrics. I thought I was going crazy 😄 He worked the message in a bottle lick into back on 74 and then added the "let it go" phrase from back on 74 into the callback on message in a bottle. The rap is his, with both a reference to Jungle (who did back on 74) and Nas, which is the next song he released after this. Love your reactions!!!
He uses these techniques in the busking session with Sam Tompkins when he sing Man's World. I love that performance. So did many of the women in the street😉
You may need to get used to being surprised by Ren. I have never been able to predict what Ren will do next. I believe that he could anything he put his mind to. Thank you for this reaction, Lynzi.
Ren also does a lot of Word(s) Acting throughout his songs thus giving us facial expressions. I think that draws you in fast. Ren is a professional at this. Also, yes, Ren was a Chainsmoker, he admits, cuz of his treatments in Canada, he had to stop. He is smokes here & there.
Such an amazing production and only Ren could write a rap like that! Brilliant reaction, just love it when someone really gets his mastery, ( Love your channel intro as well ) . Next stop Mackay his latest.
I’m really impressed with your reactions. Your previous reactions were informative and heartfelt. Sometimes you are a little hard on yourself but you are very smart and really good at this. I also like how you play the song a second time because people miss things on the first time around. Keep up the good work, subscribed!
This so showcases his voice❤ Seems he recreates himself in every moment. Have you done the Fred Again Mashup,? Another new singing track. Such a nice reaction. Ren is known for changing the lyrics a bit to suit himself. And yes. His rap knitting together the 2 retakes.
Title: “Back on 74” Released: 2023 Artists: Jungle (a London-based electronic pop soul band) Song theme: Nostalgia and nostalgic memories of a fictitious place called 74th Avenue. Title: “Message in a Bottle”. Released: 1979. Artists: Police (British rock band), Sting (lead singer). Song theme: A castaway on an island sends out a message in a bottle because he is lonely and alone. Ren’s video features Sylvia Mwenze, Scarlett Fae and Kai Lacey.
If you want some more of Ren's "soulful" voice, I'd highly recommend "The Big Push - Wade in the water / Nina simone / Trouble so hard" Very good live performance by Ren and his band!
Love your reactions. If you like great singing, please try the song Ghost Love Score live at Wacken 2013 by the band Nightwish. You will be blown away by the singer.
Ren's great. He writes his own rap and has his own songs, he's better than 99% of rappers, producers out today. You'll have to go back a few years to see his full catalog and collabs w/ highly talented singers.
He wrote the rap part in the middle, it starts with something like my specialty dirty drops and ends with that's it for now back to 1974. This song is more reminiscent of the 70's, hence back to 74.
An informative and excellent reaction so thank you. I have watched the original Back On 74 by Jungle a few times now and it is superb in its own right. Ren does his thing and keeps elements of the original while injecting his own signature tone and style. Yes, Ren does smoke and way too much by his own admission, a vice he would like to quit but has so far been unable to. Some of his rasp is certainly due to this but the rest is all Ren and I’ve heard him turn it on and off as needed. The rap verse is Ren’s and the rest is parts of the two originals. A great vibe! Ren wrote the rap bridge. I love when he goes into ‘Message in a Bottle’. His voice is in a very similar range as Sting’s. He is a big fan of the Police.

@@lynzistringer Great reaction but not sure where you got "New York" from. Marvin was Detroit/Motown in the '60s, and the capitol of soul/R&B in the '70s was Philly, not NYC.
@@Cosmo-Kramer I definitely might have misspoken here 😂 I wasn’t sure of the region, and I feel like a lot of artists refer to it as an NYC sound, such as St. Vincent with her recent “Daddy’s Home” release. Doing these reactions, I like to come into it as fresh and unaware as possible, so I’ll definitely misspeak from time to time. I apologize!!
@@lynzistringer No worries, Lynzi, you're a young gal and a main part of this reaction journey is learning things like this from us OGs who lived through those times back in '74 (lol), etc. So to summarize it for you, Detroit with its Motown label and bevy of local, supremely talented artists, served as the capitol of soul/R&B in the '60s. But by the end of the decade Motown moved their offices and operations to L.A., and suffered badly in doing so. The label was never the same. Fortunately, there was a similarly robust and talented bevy of local talent in Philadelphia blossoming in the early '70s and it became the new capitol of soul/R&B, which it remained for the balance of the decade. The genre is called, Philly Soul, or sometimes, The Philly Sound, or, The Sound of Philadelphia. Most just say, Philly Soul. (It was actually Philly Soul which Disco grew out of.) Sure, NYC had a terrific group called, The Manhattans, and Chicago had, The Chi-Lites. But Philly was where it was at. And it wasn't just the city's local talent that made it the place to be. Many artists from other cities, like The Spinners from Detroit, who had not experienced any success in Motown, moved to Philly in the early '70s and with the guidance and stellar songwriting of some legendary Philly Soul producers, they became world famous! In fact, if you'd like to react to some Philly Soul, The Spinners would be a good place to start, with their 1972 hit, *"Could It Be I'm Falling In Love".* And I'll give you one more suggestion, for some homegrown Philly talent, The Stylistics, and their 1971 hit, *"Betcha By Golly, Wow".* Use the original studio versions. ps~Regarding your observation about Ren's voice sounding different, and wondering if he is a smoker, he has been an on 'n off smoker, but another thing that may contribute to Ren's voice sounding differently at times, is that he is battling severe Lyme disease, and has been for years, and perhaps that's why. Aside from him just being so sexy, one of the best things he does in this is he sings support for the "background singers". You can hear him give them a boost but never overpowering them.
If Ren calls it a retake, he is rapping over someone else's beats. If he calls it a Mashup, like this, you get a little of the original and a little of Ren's part. The rap section in this is all his. Back on 74 is Jungle and you know who does Message in a Bottle

I was so glad to hear he had stopped smoking because I was alarmed by how many cigarettes he was getting through. It was a crutch for him. He gave up weed as well just as he arrived in a country where it is legal. His health took precedence.
He's relapsed into smoking a few times since quitting. For example, last summer when he came back to the UK to shoot the video for Money Game 3, he was chain smoking to manage the stress. It's so hard for smokers to really and truly quit. I'm glad I never started.
