You're thinking of nuclear fallout, which doesn't occur as the nukes detonate above ground. It's why Hiroshima and Nagasaki have rebuilt, but Chernobyl is still a no-go zone.
There’s no guarantee that they would all detonate above the ground because with that much chaos going on it would be hard to regulate such thing unless you had an AI tracking how long it takes on average or measuring how far away it is from the ground or if you just had a huge team of humans doing it
nuclear fallout happens everytime you detonate a nuke above ground, it's just a matter of how bad it is and if it's dangerous and for how long. Yes, an airburst produces less fallout but they would still produce fallout. During a first strike a lot of the war heads would most probably be aimed at ICBM launch sites which are in hardened bunkers and would thus be targeted with ground burst nukes.
The way I see it, currently, nukes have actually saved more people than killed. I saw somewhere that some historians predicted that if nukes would not have been created, WW2 would not have ended as quickly as it did, and there was a high chance that the USSR and the USA went into a conventional war which would have probably started a WW3 the total estimate was around 140 million lives saved. Obviously that’s less than what a nuclear war would cause today, but that’s just how I think about it
It's true, but building peace based on mutual destruction is not a good idea. Even the smallest misunderstanding can unleash a catastrophe, we got very close to this several times in history and every time we were saved just because one single person said "No, I don't push the button" despite everyone else already did it. There are other ways to guarantee global peace that don't involve the risk to destroy our civilization
Funnily enough humans have been trying to do this kind of total annihilation thing for a long time now it was hoped when making example the mini gun that it would be too dangerous for war, and this would make wars less likely but we just kept ignoring it we kept fighting each other again, and again until Those massive explosions got us to wake up to the impending threat
I have been trying to recommend a video to you, the video is called "The Skyhook - 1000 km cable to the stars", It's from Kurzgesagt and it's a very interesting video! 😅
Fun fact, the US government actually surprisingly has a contingency plan to keep running the country during a all out nuclear war. The US has many contingency plans, but I’d say this one is the most wild one. There’s a few videos on it, but I don’t know any good specific ones
radiation is only a problem with nuclear weapons around ground zero of the blast which would drop to non-lethal levels within 1-3 years now if one of those nukes hit near a nuclear reactor that's a different story
Russia recently announced plans to put nukes in space. The US has had plans for stuff like this for a long time, but has kind of stopped doing it because it would break international treaties. There is not supposed to be weapons in space especially WMD’s (Weapons of mass destruction) luckily it is unlikely this will actually come to fruition simply due to the current events happening. I don’t want to mention anything because I want to keep this channel peaceful for you lol I just thought I would mention this specific thing because it relates to the video.
It’s funny you make this comment with doing absolutely no research at all. Just not does the US not possess over half of the nukes in the world we don’t even have the most nukes in the world.

@@The_GuyWhoNeverUploadsAnything ah yes thanks for the info
I LOVE that you've found Kurzgesagt!!! Even though it is often terrifying!
Too many people think this is a videogame or movie. It's far worse than anything depicted in Fallout or Terminator 2
Fallout is meant to be inaccurate is what people in the 50,s thought the future would be and how radiation worked
"If you have more people than calories, then in a few weeks you don't anymore"
Dark, but on point

For some reason RUclips won't let me post comments with more than 10 words 😅 (Edit: oh it worked!)
