Richard's experience with how to approach repairing and aligning different types of machines is priceless. I think I have a pretty good idea of how to scrape a lump of iron to be flat, but understanding how to restore a worn machine with numerous slides in different axes is a total mystery. I would like to know if you see a difference when you reassemble your surface grinder. Thanks for posting.
Great to see Mr. King still at it, travelling to Germany again! I didn't know Biax was in Maulbronn. When I did my high school foreign exchange program to Bretten we went to the Cloister there in Maulbronn, and again when we were there just a few years ago visiting friends in Heilbronn.
Sounds like all had a great time. It seems to me the magnet that pulls all of us together is the love of the trade. Thanks Stephan. I enjoyed the video.
Really enjoy seeing the quality and skilled trade going so strong in your country especially with the younger generation. Hope some day more of the young people here in the U.S. realize how important the skilled trades are and not afraid to get their hands dirty together with using their minds. Thanks for the videos, enjoy and learn from them all. Ed K. Cleve. Oh.
Nice video. I love seeing the engelbert strauss pants and overalls. My favorite pants of them all. Cannot wait to go back to Deutschland to get some more clothes from there.
Hello Stefan, it looks like you guys had fun while training yourself under the guidance of Richard King. I can image that being an assistant, translator and participant was quite a challenge, but I bet that the other "students" benefited a lot from you translating the mechanics/scraping lingo :)
I recognized the Mahle building at the end of the video, and thought Stuttgart immediately. Then I checked the title of the video, heh. I have Mahle pistons in my 911, and have visited Stuttgart for the Porsche museum and factory tour. Also the Mercedes museum is fantastic. On another note, I would really like to participate in a Richard King scraping class, please let me know if you hear of another European class. I know he is "threatening" to retire.... Great hacker space....
The grinder is already back together and working great, I get very good accuracity over the whole length of travel now :) Squaring parts by scraping is on my list.
Nicely edited Stefan. I don't envy you the translation work - its hard enough trying to explain what Im doing on a day to day basis in my own language - the dog still doesn't understand,,,,
yeh fully agree with you on the cat. Mine has the ability to sit unseen and scowl and smirk at each and every cock up I make - Im sure she adjusts setting when I leave the workshop for a break. All the best Stefan - enjoy your festive season. Mat
0:16 a Dacia 1310 on the trailer. It is strange to see that car so far away from home. And by the looks of it is not even that old to be considered a vintage car. It is just old, ~25 years. I guess the owner is a big Dacia fan. :)
The class was in Stuttgart. Perhaps some Mercedes or Porsche bachelors where overdoing the newest prototype of a flying car with zero fuel consumption........
I need to section of my shop a little looking at this, too bad that every one of those plastic strip things I've seen cost their weight in gold from what I've been able to see.
War irgendwas organisatorisches. Aber im Nachhinein hat sich der Hobbyhimmel als optimaler Ort herrausgestellt, weil wir da beliebig lange arbeiten konnten und nicht um 17:00 Feierabend-Tür-Zu war.
That was a lovely video. I liked the workshop. As to translating, real time or otherwise, it is no joke. I have done it myself English-Spanish and I am completely bilingual but find it very difficult. The Italians have a saying: "traduttore, traditore." Translator, traitor. How true.
Hi Stefan ;) I remember you were in Dk. for one of these classes. I live in DK-second largest city. I just can not find out how and when these classes are and how one can be in one of them. Any info on that ? Thank's
Stefan, is scraping still used in modern machine construction? I have noticed large CNC machines like Klingelnberg gear cutting machines all use linear rail instead of scraped dovetail type ways and it seems like the mating surface of rails to machine is simply ground.
Software can never compensate for non-bearing surfaces nor local imperfections. And somehow those really expensive grinders that grind flat and parallel have to be made ;)
I was thinking the same thing...owning an '84 3.2L Carrera, I've always dreamed of driving in Germany where you can just let it out...but I was wondering if he was driving in Germany as he was going so slow.:) Mine is not a very fast one, but I love the normally aspirated Porsche... Stefan, would love to hear more on how you evaluated and approached the surface grinder work you did. I just got a surface grinder not long ago, and getting it setup, amongst a gazillion other projects... Always enjoy your vids.:)
Not all Autobahn is unrestricted in speed, often with a fixed speed trap and depending on traffic, going at a steady speed is sometimes better than accelerating and braking for each and every slow vehicle. Saves a good amount of expensive fuel anyway.
Well, that would kind of suck...but what is a fixed speed? In the U.S. it's 55 mph (88kph). My guess is the speed trap is probably higher??? Otherwise driving along at 180kph and then having to slow to 88kph would truly suck...
TraditionalToolworks I meant fixed position speed trap within a speed restricted section, next to the occasional mobile one. The speed depends, 130km/h is the suggested speed for cars, 80 for trucks, but sections/bends can be as low as 60, in construction sites even lower. The concept is to have it built for speed and without direct intersections or traffic lights. A vehicle needs to run at least 60 to drive on the Autobahn (ofc there are special permits for wide or heavy loads). Other notable thing is: the slowest vehicle must use the outer right lane.
The truck had a german civil license plate, maybe surplus military equipment, just some olive green paint scheme or an amateur radio foxhunt/contest thing. They often carry their extensible antenna beams around in that fashion.
Hi Stefan, thanks for featuring our place! @all: we have cleaned up the mess in the metal shop! Stop by and say hello if your are in Stuttgart.

Good stuff Stefan!
Thank you and Thanks for watching, Robin!
What's the deal with the Ford 350 pulling the military trailer?
Good question - I guess Us-Military stuff.
If it's blue it must be an Air Force communication truck, they probably use it to watch your videos.
@Robert Klein - I think its the Flat-Earth-Research-Group
Hi Stefan. Thanks for sharing. I took Richard's class just the following week in Mudersbach and absolutely loved it.
Great to see Mr. King still at it, travelling to Germany again! I didn't know Biax was in Maulbronn. When I did my high school foreign exchange program to Bretten we went to the Cloister there in Maulbronn, and again when we were there just a few years ago visiting friends in Heilbronn.

Nice to see all those young people learning an almost lost art, and keeping it alive.
We had two very young guys sent to the class by their company to learn scraping - I think thats a great thing!
Great. I remember Stuttgart from my visit in 1961 - the year the Berlin wall went up!!
Fortunately we overcame the wall-concept ;)
I used to live just outside of Stuttgart
One of my favorite sayings was bigger than Stuttgart when talking about how much fun something was
I've driven through Germany and surely the biggest place there is Ausfarhrt!
ColtaineCrows I can't remember is that enter or exit on the Autobahn
thanks for sharing....nice video recap
Thank you Chuck!

Eddie I am afraid the US is doomed . I have 8 grandsons and not one of them is interested in my small machine shop business.
Nice video. I love seeing the engelbert strauss pants and overalls. My favorite pants of them all. Cannot wait to go back to Deutschland to get some more clothes from there.
Glad you were able to get your little grinder a little better. I look forward to the 5 block test where they are all within 2 micron. :-)
That sure looked like a fun place to hang out, well done.
Scraping is a neat way to make things straight... ;)
Enjoyed the video...
Hi Stefan,
I think I saw you sneaking over to the wood shop ! :) Great video as always !
Brian
Nice video Stefan looks like you had a good time at the scraping class .
Thanks! Yes, we had a great time :)
Thanks for sharing Stefan, I enjoyed it. Good footage👍
Thank you for sharing that, Stefan.
The class was great!
And yes, I exaggerated at the shaper. :-)
I assume this channel´s audience is quite relaxed on this topic.
Yeah...maybe ;-)

what a great video!
Looks like you had some fun! Can't wait to see the grinder back in action. Can you show us how to square up an angle plate?
The grinder is already back together and working great, I get very good accuracity over the whole length of travel now :)
Squaring parts by scraping is on my list.
Glad to hear that. I have an angle plate for my for my rotary table that I want to square up so I will keep my eye out. :)
Wow, very nice makerspace.
Love the scraping videos
Nicely edited Stefan. I don't envy you the translation work - its hard enough trying to explain what Im doing on a day to day basis in my own language - the dog still doesn't understand,,,,
Thats why I like cats, they dont need constant supervision ;)

Great content...I see you have the same man made clouds that we have here in Aus

A typical day on the german autobahn ;)
I think this was the first time I've seen the kingway tool . It's like it's top secret
Nice car time laps!
Great video! When's the screw balancing class? ;)
Kommst du auch aus Baden-Württemberg wenn ich dich das fragen darf
Bayern :)
Well done!
Thanks!
Thanks for the video.
Awesome!!!
That would be very challenging to translate on the fly. I speak a little bit of German, and can appreciate the difficulty that would represent.
"I gots to know": why the pixelation? What would need to be hidden with all those students having access?
TOP SECRET scraping ? unlikely
+Bob Engelhardt top secret, sorry ;)
The class was in Stuttgart. Perhaps some Mercedes or Porsche bachelors where overdoing the newest prototype of a flying car with zero fuel consumption........
Scraping porn, he dosen't want his channel blocked. ☺
Stefan, when something is perfectly flat and you try to hinge it where does it hinge ? Thank you.
I need to section of my shop a little looking at this, too bad that every one of those plastic strip things I've seen cost their weight in gold from what I've been able to see.
@1873Winchester: Actually the strips we use at Hobbyhimmel are cut from fairly cheap clear vinyl table cloth. We get it a home improvement stores.
Thanks for the tip, found some real cheap PVC stuff that looks like it'll do
Warum hats bei Biax nicht geklappt? Schade!
War irgendwas organisatorisches. Aber im Nachhinein hat sich der Hobbyhimmel als optimaler Ort herrausgestellt, weil wir da beliebig lange arbeiten konnten und nicht um 17:00 Feierabend-Tür-Zu war.
I think I spotted you in the sewing section 😳 Congrats on the "apprenticeship"?
+Makin Sumthin From Nuthin thanks, I actually know how to run a sewing machine and I can knitt. :)
I can knit too...But I choose not to.
Deckel FP2 😍

what are the trucks with the satelite dishes at 1:05min?
Flat-Earth research!
Amateurs. I thought it was common knowledge that sitting in a basement while wearing nothing more then underpants is best practice.
Cheers!
Always interested in one question. Are Germans watching you? Comments in English only
Игорь Тонкошкуров da!
Sure... can´t resist answering in german sometimes. Stefan is also an active member of a german language board and presents part of his work there.
Look out for all the commenters with ü, ä, or ö in their names....Müller, Möller, Kärcher, Jägermeister ;)
Hi Stefan ;) I remember you were in Dk. for one of these classes. I live in DK-second largest city. I just can not find out how and when these classes are and how one can be in one of them. Any info on that ? Thank's
Infos on the classes can most of the time be found on practical machinist, in the machine reconditioning subforum.
handscraping.com/ Contact Richard or his son Alex with your questions.
...So does Richard teach by the lesson, or does he have a flat rate?
Stefan, is scraping still used in modern machine construction? I have noticed large CNC machines like Klingelnberg gear cutting machines all use linear rail instead of scraped dovetail type ways and it seems like the mating surface of rails to machine is simply ground.
Some manufacturers use scraping: www.kitamura-machinery.com/advantages/
Others use software compensation.
Software can never compensate for non-bearing surfaces nor local imperfections. And somehow those really expensive grinders that grind flat and parallel have to be made ;)
Why all the pixelated areas?
Because there where things that where not for the public ;)
You drove all the way to Stuttgart in the slow lane? Porsche is slowly shaking their heads.
+Poncho likes bacon I dont like driving fast, going along at steady 100...120kmh is my thing :)

Pixelated because......
Because pixels! :)
So ein intransparenter Kanal ;-).... jetzt bin ich gespannt wie ein Flitzebogen was das wird.
Is it just me or did anyone notice the US Army equipment in an American civilian pickup truck going down the road???
there is a US base in stuttgart
The truck had a german civil license plate, maybe surplus military equipment, just some olive green paint scheme or an amateur radio foxhunt/contest thing. They often carry their extensible antenna beams around in that fashion.
