Thank you for recommending Outdoor Status. I literally got a notification just after midnight that two day permits opened up for Mt. Whitney and I was able to snag them!
Thank you for the Park Junkie link. As someone wanting to try hiking, the restrictions are very discouraging which I guess is the whole point. It's hypocritical for the parks to be running ads encouraging people to get out and explore when they prevent us from doing so.
Chris Always love your videos. I find them very helpful. I also really appreciate your commentary during your hikes. They are packed with very useful information and you have a way of telling the story as if we were watching it live. I also really appreciate the 360° view videos. Some amazing views of amazing places that until I found your channel I had never seen. Keep up the good work. Oh I did see your interview on Dan's channel and he is right when it comes to hiking information and tech you are the Goat. Eddie in Tennessee
Eddie, thank you so much, I appreciate it 🙏 And sorry I haven't been posting many 360 videoes. I looked at the stats for them a while ago and only 1% or less of people watched them, so I decided it just wasn't worth the time and sweat. This summer when I get back to the higher peaks I might take some 360 video of the more appropriate parts of the trail and share it. I think it's very cool too. - Hoping to hit the Smokies this Fall too if I can make it work.... used to hike there all the time when I lived on the East Coast but its been a while.
I used Outdoor Status to get a Mt. Whitney overnight permit after failing to get one in the lottery. They actually published a listing of how many permits would become available on the release date which made it possible to enter your permit application on the date on which there were the most openings. IIRC within minutes all the unclaimed permits were gone. Now if only all the snow would melt by 8/3/23!!
Thanks for letting us know where those funds are going. I’d assume most of it was going back to the parks. I do like the site but it’ll make me think twice about whether or not I want to make a reservation or permit there. You don’t need a permit for the Enchantments either if you do it as a day hike. I did it as a day hike a few years ago and it was great. 😊
As a non American follower outside of the US I found this fascinating. I was recently in Scotland where they have a free to roam law which allows you to hike freely, anywhere including private land. Maybe Scotland is the Land of the Free.
The majority of the hikes here in the us are free . I like this permit process it keeps a lot of non hikers that just show up for pictures and walk around with sandals and Starbucks that aren’t prepared
It’s one of those things that can create mixed feelings but the truth is there is a reason these particular hikes require a permit. If they did not require a permit it would be an unpleasant madhouse and the areas would quickly be destroyed. Unfortunately there are too many people on the planet and all of the nice stuff would be destroyed if there were no checks and balances. Trust me even in Scotland where the population is still low enough to have the freedom to roam people will eventually start ruining it for everyone else if they haven’t already
Perfect timing. Bout to commence a cross country Natty Park trip. Thanks for the tips. Does the pre open bicycle entry hack still work in Zion for Angels Landing?
I am old enough to remember driving up to the national forest on a whim. Access restrictions are way beyond what would be needed to protect the environment. This is UN Agenda 21 in action and the plan is for restrictions to increase.
Lot of whining here in the comments about permits. Y’all must be new to the public lands. This is something that’s sometimes used in highly visited sites to control large crowds, to protect natural resources or historic sites from overuse, etc.

Congrats, yea lots of permits open up in the week or two prior - I've snagged some good ones with Outdoor Status

Excellent video and very helpful information.

Scotland is not the US my friend,I am Irish and have lived in Cali for over 30 yrs, Permits are very necessary here in our National Parks.

Pisses me off I gotta pay to reserve a public spot!
I guess the question is if they catch you without a permit what's the fine? Considering the permit cost it seems the risk might be worth it.
Usually they make you turn around and leave and hand you a fine. Some places like Angels Landing and Half Dome have rangers checking permits.
I’ve run into rangers checking permits at Mt. Whitney and Mt. San Gorgonio.
Are all hikes going to this permit based system or just certain bucket list hikes? Thank you.
It's only going to be for the real popular ones that suffer from overcrowding like Half Dome, Whitney, Angel's Landing, etc
The nice thing is there is plenty of wilderness out there to hike without a permit. Get it while you can.
Depending on the permit, you might have to pay $15 to use the tracker.

is this website only for americans to look for teh permits for you?
Just another example of many in the Great American Ripoff by the private sector.
I just go permitless.
Until you meet the trail ranger and then your going home
Now that they've implemented a permitting system expect more free hikes will require a permit. Got to keeps the profits rolling in!
Hiking permit 😂😂😂
