I'm a REAL FLICKA FAN!!! (I named one of my cats Flicka!) I met her (and Samuel Ramey) after a concert at Brevard, NC in 2000. In 2003, she came to Hampton, VA (where I live) for a concert. At the meet and greet party after the show, I gave her a photo of her and Placido Domingo I'd taken during curtain call of The Merry Widow at the MET. She is a MOST GRACIOUS, GENTEEL, BEAUTIFUL, TALENTED LADY!!!
Her voice is deeper than the others I've heard used for this. It's lovely.
I enjoy listening live or recordings of the great voices of our time. Von Stade is one of these. Both mezzo sopranos, Stade and Braganca have given great performances. Sorry to hear of Braganca's passing.

Now on a tangent. In 1992, I got a part in the Stockton Civic Theatre's production of Amadeus. The director, drama professor at the University of the Pacific (Dave Brubeck's alma mater) found a brilliant soundtrack made by the University of Wyoming. And I proceeded to fall in love with Mozart and opera. That summer the San Francisco Opera did a whole season of Mozart in honor of his 200th birthday. My mom gifted me tickets to 3. The Magic Flute, Cosi Fan Tutte, and The Marriage of Figaro. Starting with The Marriage where I heard Frederica Von Stade singing the part of Cherubino. In the middle of this aria I closed my eyes and I could swear it was an angel singing.

Das war vor 32 Jahren. Das war sie 47 Jahre alt. Also keine überraschende Leistung.
