In these kinds of comparisons one needs to be careful not to confuse consumption that looks different with consumption that is less or even doesn't exist. Consumption in the UK is higher, but also binge-drinking in the evening or at parties looks very different from the day-drinking shown in the report.

As a European with a crib in Wakanda, alcohol usage in Europe is higher. However, there's attention for it. My West African family sells alcoholic drinks and the customers are few, but those boys drink. No weak lads there. 😂 They're wealthy boys, because the drink of choice is Guinness. However, the unemployed drink local liqueur, which is moonshine, no matter the name they give it.
You must understand that it's the WHO talking, who can't differentiate between use and abuse.
On a very positive note, hardly anybody smokes.... and smoking kills very surely.

The problem is people take offense when truth is spoken. You can see some of the comments are so defensive, instead of acknowledging the reality. No one is forced to drink or to not drink. Every person has a right to choose what to do with their own lives. But the dangers of anything, be it alcohol or excess sugar should be communicated to people so they can make informed decisions.
This is well presented. Well done to DW as always.

It’s not as big a problem as in the USA.
Cocaine is a worse problem, with gangs trafficking it through Netherlands and Belgium to the rest of Europe.
It doesn’t make the alcohol problems less important, though, as they do cause serious societal problems. But as they pointed out in this documentary, it is often from frustration that they have no work or purpose in life, that they end up drinking. Governments need to resolve these issues so that there are enough jobs and money for everyone to live comfortably, and plenty of mental health support, then they’ll have less problems with alcohol or drugs.

I think the emphasis should be on the cultivation of entrepreneurship and self awareness in a manner that is culturally palatable to the community in question.

@@Flugs0 no, people who are in poverty or living in low income households tend to have a lot of children. Hence why a lot of African women have a lot of kids compared to women Europe. If a person is living in bad living conditions, they don’t have the same access and knowledge about health practices than a person in liveable conditions. I used to ask myself why are people having unprotected sex, if they don’t want HIV. But the truth is people still do it anyway. People who can afford, they buy mornings after pills and they could easily do an abortion. condoms are free in South Africa, but you can only get them in clinics, or other places. So imagine a poor person might need to go to the clinic every time they want condoms but a wealthy person just buys them at groceries stores or petrol stations. It’s about inequality of resources

The alcohol industry plays the exact same tricks they have played in Europe decades ago. I think there is value in looking at what Europe did (and not yet did) to combat the alcohol industry, or else African nations get duped by the breweries and destilleries just like the European nations in the past. Don't repeat our mistakes.

The world needs to mind their business, at first they send "People are starving in Africa" and now they're saying "People drink a lot in Africa". They should just let us be.

we are a traumatized people. who are scared to face our trauma in the eye. not only are we traumatized by those who are not one of us we are also traumatized by each other. this is a trauma response. we drink alcohol in order not to face our reality. we need to face our trauma from colonization and slavery by the yt man, arab and indian man. we need to remember who we are. the dignified, extremely intelligent and creative people that we are. we need to do for ourselves for the sake of the future of our children. we need to develop. quickly. by ourselves using our own strength. leading ourselves.owning our countries like we used to. before we met those people from the east and the north.

This video is portraying Kenya in a very negative light 😢. It's really unfortunate that a Kenyan reporter is depicting the entire country as being full of drunkards.

This is going to get touchy. Alcoholism is a problem everywhere, this seems something that should be covered by an African news outlet
