I was driving w/my six & a half year old daughter the other day & this came on Sirius Radio Channel #7...I started singing it & I thought she didn't like it so I turned it to a different channel & she said "Daddy!!!...turn it back...I want to hear that song!!!" Now she sings it to me even though she doesn't know all the lyrics. GREAT SONG that haunts your mind!!! Thanx for the great post!
I remember travelling with my dad in his van, and I would lay in the back and watch the stars out the back window as we drove for hours... and this song reminds me of that more than any other.
I met John in San Diego at a small venue called, "The Place Across The Street From The Sports Arena" in 1979. I'd given him grief for not doing "Tom Dooley" (me and my friend were bombed, front row, center) During his first break, John and his agent politely told me why... all was cool. Half way thru his next set John says, "For my drunk little friend here in the front row" and he began singing Tom Dooley. Oddly enough we became and remained friends from that night on. Miss you JS.
When this came on the radio that summer of 1979 it became an instant hit!! I was on active duty in the US ARMY stationed at FT LEWIS Wa, I was also approaching my 21st birthday.
Actually Stevie's voice is a little to loud.but give John credit for his writing vocals and arrangement. He was a very underrated musician.Stevie and Lindsay both learned a lot from him. He also wrote numerous songs for numerous people who we would never even realize.A great loss to the industry.
Her Dad came back to Eco class and said : Would you like to sit in the first there is a guy sitting next to me who is a musician. Turned out was John Stewart, but she did not knew one of his songs that he was singing to her. He promised that when he gets back home to send her an LP with a dedication.
For all the people who liked John Stewart , I got a nice story about John: Around that time when this song came out my girlfriend (at the time around 12 years old) was traveling with here parents between Frankfurt Germany and New York. Her Dad was sitting in First Class and she and her mom in Eco class ( her parents where both in the airline biz Dad Lufthansa /Mom Pan Am ) so they had standby tickets and so one of them could sit in First class.
My daughter was named Miranda.I heard the song Midnight Wind in 79 and somehow just fell in love with the name. In the 90's when my daughter was born the name still resonated in my head.Today my Miranda is a beautiful woman who knows how she was named and loves it.
This is the first song I ever watched being performed on TV that I'd heard on the radio. I was nine years old at the time; and it was all too fascinating for me. My mother was rather amused at that situation.
I didn't hear this song until the fall of 1979, and it made quite an unforgettable impression on me. Simple but intelligent lyrics, really good arrangements and a story to go with it. Not long ago I learned that John Stewart was once a member of the famous Kingston Trio folk group. Even though 'Gold' is a pop song, it's got a bit of a Celtic/folk vibe that makes his folk heritage evident.
I know, similar story. We were on a road trip from Kansas City Missouri to New York, New York. Although I spent most my time listening to Duran Duran, whenever this song came on "The Bridge" on Sirius XM, I'd always listen to it. God bless my parents and their taste in music.
I totally forgot about this song, I was looking at Amazon about a 70s compilation album, this happened to be on the album and the reviews mentioned this song...I haven't heard this in YEARS! Definitely a forgotten classic that once played on the radio 📻
I remember picking up a book that had the top 100 albums of all time. There were the usual suspects, but about 4 by this man. He was greatly respected by his peers. And I haven't heard a song this good in 30 years.
1979 and eleven years old having to leave San Francisco for Mountain View with my younger brother and my mother for job career opportunities. Had to make friends all over again but one of my best friends was always that radio, no matter where I go. Thank you so much, John Stewart. RIP : (
Everytime I hear this song, I picture a scene in black and white with an old 57 chevy, Roy Orbison driving, John Stewart, Bruce Springstein in theback, Johnny Cash riding shotgun, holding a rifle singing this song real loud, spiitn' dust down an old backroad...Leather, the smell of grease, shots guns, whisky.
Hello Samuel Litman(what a cool last name)!!!! Just had to respone to your post I to had the 45rpm record of the song as well also one of my favorites as well!!!! from South Louisiana.
was a senior in high school when this song came out todays kids dont know what they are missing give our music a try and dont turn it into trash rap music!!!
Here i am. 20 years old, looking back on the happier days when i was a kid, going on trips with my family, this song, some oakridge boys, and a random assortment of song. They just remind me of the long nights of driving and visiting places. We dont really travel anymore though..
I heard this on the radio the other day. I thought for sure it was Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks and the guitar sounded like Lindsey Buckingham. I came to You Tube and here it is John Stewart. I remember this song from when I was young listening on my little transistor radio. I don't remember John Stewart.
And so he did , she received and LP in the mail from John Stewart thanking her for the nice talk and entertainment during the flight. What a nice and normal guy he was ! Now today this LP with the dedication is considered "REAL GOLD"
I'll be performing this on new years eve, with a friend of mine who adores Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac,. Love this song, love the line "People turning music into gold" love it. Too bad that line doesn't reflect the state of today's music.
@@brianvincentdoucet4273 Stevie (and Lindsey) did background vocals for quite a few artists. They pretty much cut their teeth in the music business working in the studio. Walter Egan, Bob Welch, Kenny Loggins... just to name a few.
@igluver15 What a sweet story. I knew this as a lil child, too & found it 20 years later & have listened a hundred times easily. I love that your precious one asked you to turn it back! What a gift you have in her, I can just imagine her singing it right now as it plays. People who have kids hopefully understand how blessed they are, as I would love to raise a kid, but Gays aren't allowed to adopt in my state. What a shame, as a kid in a state orphanage would like me like my nieces do.
Lindsey Buckingham will be the first to admit that he stole his style from this guy. I had to listen to all of his music when I was a little. My father probably had every album by John Stewart and when he high or was out of stuff to play, he went folk on us. I miss him. And I miss John. RIP to both of you.
+Tom Thomas John was great indeed, definitely the major influence on Lindsey's style. John was generous with his praise too: "[Lindsey is] the only genius I've ever worked with in the studio...A few people I know of really know how to make that mystical 'thing' happen with a record. Brian Wilson is one; Lindsey Buckingham is the master at it." It's a crime that the RIAA never gave John a platinum record after selling a million+ copies of this record.

I remember driving down the California coast bumping this song in my dad’s Mustang in the summer of 81. Those were the best days of my life.
I think I’m the youngest one here to love the song XD ,Im currently in love with 70’s to 80’s rock
it doesn't matter how old/young one is, music is MUSIC
just appreciate it for what it is.......

One of the best from 1979. Too bad radio has ignored great music like this.
ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS OF ALL TIME
Part of the Kingston Trio great solo song 42 years ago
This song runs and runs through my mind....love it! 8)
John Stewart
"Gold"
1979.
Bumped into this song randomly on the radio. And now it's on my playlist. :)
Stewart deserved. to be bigger than he was. such a great human

Actually it was John playing the guitar solo but it sounds a lot a like Lindsey‘s for sure
You nailed it. It is Stevie Nicks on backing vocals and Lindsey Buckingham playing guitar.
Actually the guitar solo was played by John even though it sounds like Lindsey

I remember this from 1979. I was 15 and I'd just gotten my Sportster. A friend had this on cassette and played it to death in his Mustang.
Back in the day. When it really meant something to be California. Sad.
Memory song from 79. I was at Ft. Campbell,KY in the Army. Wife had just left. I liked Midnight Wind, too.
1979 and eleven years old having to leave San Francisco for Mountain View with my younger brother and my mother for job career opportunities.
Had to make friends all over again but one of my best friends was always that radio, no matter where I go. Thank you so much, John Stewart. RIP : (
when i lived there back in the late '60s we listened to KFRC san fransisco and the "scott st. james express is.... SMOKIN!'' they played the best.
haha same age, hated this song at the time but like it much more now.

John Stewart, great artist and a great guy.
It's great to hear all the old songs from years past!!!!! so many memories flooding back.....
I had the 45 rpm record of this, one of my favorites!

This needs to be on iTunes. I can't find the mp3 anywhere. Please iTunes, get this on there.
Stevie Nicks was also a great backup artist.
yeah, certain voices really shine in small doses. Michael Macdonald's was used a lot for BV''s
Stevie Nicks was a backup artist for him!? I didn't know that until now. And I'm not easily surprised nowadays.

I love California
I just found an autographed Kingston Trio LP with John Stewart at a thrift shop for $1!
I think I have one too. Will have to check.
When this was first released in junior high school we all thought it was fleetwood Mac.
2 members of Fleetwood Mac in the band.

This is my favorite song of all time and John Stewart is my favorite singer of all time
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heart beatin' time with my breathin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Well my buddy Jim Bass past he's a-workin' pumpin gas
And he makes two fifty for an hour
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans
Sings rock and roll in the shower
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Ah the California girls are the greatest in the world
Each one's a song in the making
Singin' back to me I can hear the melody
The story is there for the takin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heart beatin' time with my breathin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Flyin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold

trent hall Musician John Stewart and talk show host Jon Stewart were two different guys
I think he's being sarcastic
I love this song, for months I never knew who actually sang it lol

That is Stevie and Lindsey playing on the song.
I was 7 yrs. old. This is the "classic' of all "classic's.'
Great song, I thought it was Johnny Cash when it first came out.
John Stewart wrote DAYDREAM BELIEVER. That alone is awesome. He was with the Kingston Trio.
One of my fav songs of the late 70s,
He looked like Garry Shandling in that picture
+ralphkjb HAHA, yes he does
+ralphkjb ya ugly
+ralphkjb Or the lead singer from men at work
+ralphkjb He does!
And he sounds like Johnny Cash.
Fleetwood Mac - the unofficial house band of Sound City Studios back in the 70s!

keeps running over and over thru my head. i love it!!
