Just for a bit of context, The Great Intelligence was a foe that the Second Doctor encountered during the 60’s hence why there’s that feeling of more history between the two
Also if you're going to cast Richard E Grant as a villain, you're going to want him to go full on and spit venom, let's be honest.
I haven’t seen those episodes but I got the impression they referenced them in the Snowmen episode. That bit about the London Underground being a strategic weakness in the 60’s was a bit conspicuous.
@@zemoxian I know I'm a few years late, but I've just watched those Classic episodes for the first time and then ended up here, and you're be correct about the London Underground, good catch
This is such an underrated finale, it's got such a great atmosphere, loads of emotional climaxes, some great performances by the cast (especially Matt), and one of the best cliffhangers of all time.
When I first watched this, I thought the Doctor was crying when Clara told him about the conference call because he is realizing he has to go to Trenzalore (because that is what he talks about while crying).... But then he said that seeing post library River would hurt HIM too much, and I thought well maybe he was actually crying because Clara told him River was on the call. So that is my head cannon for that scene now lol ... Love them :)
Voices from the scar tissue:
‘Have you ever thought what it’s like to be wanderers in the fourth dimension?’ 1st doctor
‘Daleks, sontarans, cybermen, there still in the nursery compared to us!’ 6th doctor
‘Do i have the right?’ 4th doctor
‘There are some corners of the universe that have bred the most terrible things’ 2nd doctor
‘Absolutely fantastic!’ 9th doctor
‘I’m from the planet gallifrey in the consolation..’ 10th doctor
‘So you see, im not...’ 5th doctor
‘Hello stone henge!!’ 11th doctor
‘It was the daisiest daisy i’d ever seen jo’ 3rd doctor. 😛
Terrific! 210 people accidentally received their Blu-ray of this season early (as in, before this episode was broadcast) due to a production error and kindly complied with a BBC request to not give away spoilers about Clara as the Impossible Girl or the John Hurt revelations. I've been really looking forward to seeing you react to the 50th for awhile. My anticipation has now been turned up to eleven
You have to make sure you watch ‘The Night of the Doctor’ next
Probably done or not done by now, but I do pray you right and that's the order of viewing!
Oh yes! I hope she has seen that minisode
@@stevesm4 _Very_ much so (reactor is on series 11 on Patreon). Assuming it all makes it to RUclips, she looks to have done the full 50th experience (mini-sodes, 'An Adventure in Space and Time' etc.). Looking forward to it.
(still, wibbly wobbly and all that, maybe OP's message is what did it :)
Are you going to react to 'An Adventure in Space and Time'? Highly recommended, and would love to see your reaction. I think it was broadcast shortly before 'The Day of the Doctor'.
I do have a few "extra" reactions to upload for the 50th anniversary 😜
@@FourthWallReactions Great, looking forward to those!
@@FourthWallReactions
Yes, Adventure in Space in Time, please 🙏
It is incredible and must see for a Who fan!
@@FourthWallReactions Hopefully The Five-ish Doctors and Night of The Doctor as well.
@@FourthWallReactions you have to do night of the doctor too as it is a stepping stone to day of the doctor....
The opening to this episode is perfect for me. Let alone the rest of it 😂 I adore this finale 👌🏼
It's always heartwarming when you see members of the reaction community interacting with each other. Love your stuff Luke, can't wait for this lockdown to end so you and Deepa can be reunited! ^^
@@ZondaFRoadster I can’t wait either! Hopefully not long to go 🤞🏼
Night of the Doctor IS canonically next but you could see the 90's TV movie before that if you haven't already...
Technically, chronologically this is the final time River Song will see The Doctor.
For the live of all that is holy "The Night of The Doctor" minisode!!!!!!!
Fifty years in the making and we're almost there!
It's almost time! :-)
Little detail: this episode had one of the best scores of the Smith era.
Agreed
Regardless of the quality of the episodes, Murray Gold always brings his A-game when it comes to the finales
Don’t forget to watch (in order):
The Night of the Doctor
An Adventure Through Space & Time
The Last Day
And The Day of The Doctor before the Christmas special - The Time of The Doctor.
And the Fivish Doctors
Imagine fans watching this episode when it first aired. The reason for the Impossible Girl, the callbacks to the previous Doctors, and then being left with "John Hurt as The Doctor". Safe to say there was a hype train for the 50th anniversary
I cant wait for the next two episodes but you need to see the mini episode "night of the doctor" first
John Hurt: the weirdest fever dream I’ve ever seen
Not sure if you've watched them already but if you feel nostalgic for Tennant or Smith, they both appeared in episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures. The Matt Smith episode was written by Russell T Davies, making it the only time he's written for 11.
tons of feels in this one. The little bit showing him 'borrowing' the tardis for the first time makes me smile so much. "take this one",, she's always been there for him.
Some bangers lined up
Can't believe this episode aired almost eight years ago. The John Hurt reveal made me so excited i almost screamed. I didn't scream, though. I was familiar with the term "squee", but i had never done it.
My first squee happened on 23 november 2013 with the appearance of two certain eyebrows.
"These are attack eyebrows!" 😍❤️
@@FourthWallReactions "They are mighty eyebrows indeed, sir." 😂
Make sure you watch the mini episode “ The Night of the Doctor “ before you watch the 50th Anniversary “Day of the Doctor “. I am sure several people have already mentioned it. Very important context.
I have a long road trip the next four days. I downloaded all your Dr Who reactions for the drive. Thanks for staying the way you are.
Enjoy, and safe travels! 😍
@@FourthWallReactions 🎶 Don't go changing . . to try to please me . . You've never let me down before . . 🎶
The Great Intelligence and The Doctor have a history in Classic Who. This is also the first time they showed what a TARDIS actually looks like without the Police Box disguise or any disguise for that matter. The John Hurt Doctor mystery was one of the biggest cliffhangers and controversial scene of that time in 2013.
The Sixth Doctor's TARDIS changed several times after he briefly repaired the chameleon circuit, including into a playable pipe organ.
The Master's TARDIS has also been seen in different forms.
@@IDidntSetAHandle no he meant, without any disguises. So the tube looking thing
@@obiwankenobi687 Oh. My bad!
Pretty sure some think there were some blank TARDISes during Troughton though, they looked like picture frames? But if memory serves that was a fan interpretation.
Thanks for the correction!
We saw some undisguised Tardises in Episode 10 of Patrick Troughton's swansong "The War Games". They looked distinctly more boxy than the cylindrical ones here.
@@andrewsmith3622 I was going to say that but I don’t think they were undisguised TARDIS’s as they were the sort of boxy transport kind, almost as if its another range specifically for that function
Your creepy Dr Seuss line was excellent!
Thank you for all of your Doctor Who uploads! I love watching them and appreciate the time you spend to upload and edit these :) Keep it up! I'll be here to watch
I knew after the first jump scare "Oh, she's going to LOVE this episode..."
Your reaction to "Introducing" made me think of "Harriet Jones, Former Prime Minister" "Yes, we know who you are."
Before you watch the 50th anniversary, you have to watch “Night of the Doctor”, it explains some stuff before the anniversary.
Great reaction, there a re a couple of mini episodes before the 50th, night of the Doctor is one you really need to watch for John hurt to make sense.
Omg I just found your channel and I love your vibe and reactions! Can't wait for you to see the rest of the seasons
I've been waiting to watch this and the following reactions as a Christmas present to myself. I hope you get this as a notification so: Merry Christmas and thanks for all your great reactions!
Thanks so much! I hope your holidays were wonderful!
And the Five-ish Doctors!
Thank you, gorgeous, for this reaction. It has been a rough week, and this reaction truly brought things into perspective again for me. I needed this. You're amazing and a true kindred spirit/soul. Thanks again
im in season 2 of classic who. i cant imagine what it was for those who been seen it from the beginning. the emotion. really nice reaction
At some point I'd like to see a video of you trying to figure out River's timeline in chronological order. That would be fun! :)
I'm not quite sure what I think about the episode proper, but that opening was amazing for someone who grew up watching the Fifth Doctor and reading the Target novelisations... and that ending!!
GI was one of the returning villains in early Who and was involved with UNIT - If you remember, when Matt Smith saw Richard E. Grant's business card with the initials G.I., he said "Great Intelligence...sounds familiar." For the Doctor it was a foe he had forgotten.
Also, there are a few mini episodes you need to watch, especially Night of the Doctor.
You need to watch the Doctor Who short night of the doctor before you watch the 50th anniversary special.
I have a photo with Matt and Alex, and another with David and Catherine. River is my brothers favourite character so for Christmas 2019 I got a River novel signed by Alex for his pressie. It said hello sweetie on it.
"Just this once. Just for the hell of it. Let me save you"
That line hits me everytime
The Great Intelligence was around during the Classic Who on the 2nd Doctors run and I believe on another Classic Who before the modern Doctors!!!
"Vastra: I wish we never told Strax of that terrible place...
*Establishing Shot: GLASGOW*"
Yeah that's about the only part of this mess I got any enjoyment from.
Well that and "I'm very sorry mam I think I'm being murdered" has to be the best delivery of an awful line since "Not the Mind Probe" way back in "The Five Doctors"
Mess bless, funny spelling of best l this is such a great episode. I will never get the puricals who don’t get it
@@stevemorganexperience7833 Oh I get it. Moffat doesn't understand how Time Lords work, he made that abundantly clear when he made up the River Song nonsense
The BBC always gives advance copies of an episode to the TV reviewers so that they can write their articles in time for release right after the episode airs. In this case they omitted the John Hurt reveal from their copies in order to protect the surprise.
And then they sent the dvds out to people who bought them...before the show had been broadcast.
The great intelligence is a classic who villain that started in the second doctors era.
This was a great episode ans the cliffhanger at the end was awesome. The Fandom was so confused with the ending. Was a great time to be alive. Ha
I'm so excited for you to see the special!!
Next up the 50th anniversary special, then Adventure in Space and Time, then Time of the Doctor Christmas special.
"It could be the past . . . or maybe it's the future!"
Great intelligence was a classic who villain starting with the second doctor!
John Hurt's Doctor creates a numbering problem for the Doctors. Matt Smith's Doctor knows who John Hurt's Doctor is (and what he did), so he must be a past incarnation, assuming Ollivander is the Doctor.
However, if he is, that'd mean Matt Smith would no longer be the 11th incarnation, because we already have had Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Baker, Davidson, Baker, McCoy, McGann, Eccleston, Tennant & Smith. Which number would John Hurt be, and would Matt Smith actually be the 12th Doctor?
Your summation of Moffat is spot on. He employs the same strategy with all of his other shows, and he won't stop using this strategy for Doctor Who.
Please please please watch and react to the minisode “ night of the doctor “ its a big part of the 50th celebrations.war doctor is in between 8th and eccleston’s 9th doctor.great reaction 👍🏻🤘🏻
Please react to "The Night Of The Doctor" next. It is useful to understand John Hurt's doctor.
Don't miss the mini-episode "The NIght of the Doctor" - we all saw that next (before the next big special) and it's the most important mini-episode the show has ever done.
I love The Impossible Girl storyline but it's often debated and (I think) misunderstood by some fans. My wife HATES it bc "it makes Clara the most important companion ever and basically pulled his puppet strings all along" and I say "no she was just setting the Doctor's life right bc The Great Intelligence was changing everything". We've had LOTS of heated (but fun) arguments about this episode.
I still remember when for a few seconds I thought the doctor was called "Please!" 😂
This was one of my favourite episodes.
Like others have said make sure you watch Night of the Doctor before the next episode :)
“Why you gotta be creepy Dr Seuss?!?”
So did you enjoy getting all those answers to all those questions?
I did! And then the ending made me have more questions - LOL!
@@FourthWallReactions Stephen Moffatt said that this is one of his principles in planning a "reveal". He wants the reveal to answer questions but also to create new ones in order to maintain suspense and viewer interest.
I love John Hurt, he's my third best Doctor. It's a shame that he didn't get more time.
Mark 6:42 or so. I like it when you do your cute inserts like that! "Reviewing the River flowchart"! Pun intended? 🤔 Thanks! 😎👍🖖
8:21 _"Why you gotta be creepy Dr. Seuss?"_ 🤣
I imagine someone else has already mentioned this, but *The Great Intelligence* was an old nemesis from _Classic Who._ I think the first appearance might have been _The Second Doctor._ But I'm sure others have more info on it.
When I first watched this episode, I didn't much care for it. I didn't like the outcome of the _Impossible Girl._ I thought it was built up a bit too much. Plus, I was sort of bias already because I really really *really* liked the Victorian version of *Clara,* and this version just did not do it for me. But having watched it two or three times through the eyes of a reactor (particularly yours), I've come to appreciate it quite a bit more.
Love this episode and love Clara
The great intelligence appeared in two Patrick Troughton stories The Abominable Snowman and The Web of Fear.
I am so beyond excited for what is about to come ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Holy shmokes 😎 Will done on avoiding spoilers 😀
I love this episode and stuff, but I do kinda wish we could have met more Clara's, I think that could have been fun. Maybe it takes him time to get her out of his timestream and he runs into her a few times while travelling trying to find the answer or something, could have been interesting. I'm glad he saved her though, she's probably one of my favorite companions overall.
Can’t wait for next episode all time favourite
Great Heart Felt Reactions to a great Episode. Can't wait to watch your next Episode Reaction.
Time for The Day of The Doctor
Hope your ready for this ride!!! Lol
I love it when reactors reach this point - the anniversary stuff is so amazing, but it's sad because 7 seasons is more than halfway to the end.
Did you watch The Night of the Doctor?
I did :-)
@@FourthWallReactions Yay!!
Of the current period of Dr Who, the Matt Smith era is my favourite. Between the acting, writing, characters, humour it seemed to have the ideal balance for an entertaining evening in. Have you or are you planning to watch the spin-offs - Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Class?
Have you watched the movie and the night of the doctor?
Here we go then 😁
When is the next one up? I want to see you watch the next one! When is it?!? Where is it?!?
Is it up yet?
(I realize that communication gets garbled on the internet. This isn't me yelling at you. This is me being hyperbolic for comedic effect. Which is blown, I know, because any joke you have to explain isn't actually that funny. Which is kind of why I'm explaining this explanation of the joke, in hopes that my adherence to the premise in a drawn out execution of that simple joke will make it funny again. Did you see those big words I used? I'm pretty proud of myself for those... I hope I used the words right. Also, I want you to thank me for not actually going to find the definitions of those words and posting them here, because - not matter how funny that might have been - I recognize that this has been tedious enough. Great reaction, by the way).
Thanks. Looking forward to more.
So since this is 10 or so months since recording, how far along the show are you now?
Reaction "The Night of the Doctor" Special mini episode
Just so you know, your "Save the Day" reaction got taken down.
I know, they always send us notices when that happens. It's blocked but being disputed. :-( What a way to start the week!
I was never the biggest fan of this episode or the Impossible Girl arc but I can't wait for the next reaction
I wonder did you watch the prequel to this episode He said She said ?
This is my least favourite episode in all of New Who. This and the next one are like going from Caves to Twin Dilemma - albeit (fortunately) in reverse.
