Tommy "Gun" was a real life Pro Boxer named Tommy Morrison and he was a rising star in real life during this film. He was actually damn good when he wanted to be but had an actual tragic life which ultimately ended up with him passing away way too soon. R.I.P. Tommy.
Contracting aids/hiv and continuing to spread it with his partner isn't tragic. He's an idiot in almost every measure of his life. Zero respect earned or deserved
Even Sly didn't like how Rocky 5 turned out, and that's one of the reasons why he made 'Rocky Balboa' as a better end of the story that the fans deserved 😊
I believe they should have ended it at Rocky 3, it was perfrect. With part 4, it went into fantacy / spoof realm. Drago’s 2150lb/sq/inch punch (last montage) paints the towering Russian as basically super human. Rocky would be knocked out in Round 1 just like Appolo who in fact in part 3 explicitly states that Clubber Lang’s punches are too heavy for Rocky to last many rounds. This is why for the rematch Appolo has to teach Rocky his own style in order to put Clubber Lang away early. Now, Drago punches way harder than Clubber. If it wasn’t for Appolo’s observation and the actual numerical display of Drago’s insane strength Rocky 4 might have worked but as it was, Drago is basically unbeatable boxing bot on roids.
20:40 "Rocky! You're losing your family." Always puts a lump in my throat...especially because I remember Rocky saying in the 4th film "Adrian always tells the truth."
Real life boxing great Muhammad Ali loved magic and would do sleight of hand tricks for his friends. Rocky puling things out from behind Robert's ear is an homage to Ali. A lot of little subtle touches in the Rocky movies are inspired by things Sylvester Stallone learned from or about real boxers.
Many of the quotes Mickey was saying to Rocky , were taken from Cus D'amato almost word for word . And of course the character Duke was based on Don King , Stallone borrowed a lot lol Creed - Muhammed Ali - Rocky - Rocky Marciano .
The dialogue before and during that final fight is just full of classic lines. "You knocked him down, why don't you try knocking me down." "My ring's outside." "I didn't hear no bell."
I've always felt like Balboa was pure top tier. It's really raw with the emotions and just an overall power house from Sly. Like the cast isn't even that good but Sly and Burt really plug those gaps.
Jen literally booing the bad guys is so adorable. It also makes me remember that when I was kid, there was show called Adventure Time that showed feature length edits of the old action/adventure serials from the 40s and 50s, and when it went to or from commercial breaks it had title cards (like silent movies had) that said things like "Hiss!! The villain!"
I always appreciate your willingness to be upfront when you're just not feeling a movie - especially when it lands in the middle of an otherwise great franchise. A whole lot went wrong with this one; they really wanted to end the series by bringing it full circle with original locations and characters reappearing from the first two movies. They even brought back the original director, John G. Avildsen, who won an Oscar for directing "Rocky;" but the creative relationship between himself and Stallone was much more contentious this time. Directors had been fired off of a couple of recent Stallone movies and he had the contractual right to the final cut of the film. His original plan was for Rocky to die in Adrian's arms after the street fight! Thankfully he was talked out of that and the scene was never filmed. "Rocky Balboa" is a big improvement and a much more satisfying final chapter before the "Creed" saga begins. I look forward to your reaction!

@Jen I think the reason this is the most hated as many of us sports fans have seen our heroes go broke or fall on hard times, it was too real and many of us HATED it for seeing him fall so low. The next film fixes alot of what was hated.... and then comes the Creed series :)
27:00 Fun Fact: In the original script, Rocky is killed during the final fight with Tommy, dying in Adrian's arms in the street. The ending, which had Adrian eulogize Rocky by saying, "As long as there are people willing to meet challenges of life and not surrender until their dreams become realities, the world will always have their Rockys", would not come to pass. Producer Irwin Winkler and Avildsen were not big on the ending, with the former stating that it was never shot while also stating that Stallone eventually was convinced to change the ending.
I wish people (in the comments) would stop thinking Paulie had the Power of Attorney and signed it over to the crooked accountant. This movie is not bad, just different from his brothers, in doesn't have a training montage and it's soundtrack is plenty of earlys 90's rap there is no a proper musical theme, like the 1-2 going the distance, 3- eye of the tiger, 4-hearts on fire and war, even the 6- It's a fight. That's why the 5 is the weird brother, but I like it, it is just different, but is a chapter on Rocky Story
I grew up watching these movies first time I'm hearing Rocky V isn't that well liked. What's the difference between this movie and 3 and 4? The first two were more on the drama side, 3 4 and V more on the action side. I mean he retires after fighting Drago due to brain damage getting worse, he trains a young fighter who hits like Mike Tyson. The kid betrays him and challenges him to a fight. Rocky refuses until he hits Paulie, then Rocky fights him outside on the street. What's not awesome about that?
This was actually supposed to be the last Rocky film- hence the end credits being like a recap. However with its poor reception Stallone felt this was not the way to end the Rocky franchise. Thankfully we got Rocky Balboa in 2006... And I feel that not only is it a perfect ending for the Rocky films, but as good as the first Rocky from 1976! Can't wait to see your reaction to that one!
The setup of Paulie signing away power of attorney doesn't really make much sense. It's extremely unlikely that Rocky and Adrian would've both agreed to give a boorish dope like Paulie power of attorney over their entire estate in the first place, especially since both Rocky and Adrian are still both young and relatively healthy enough to make their own legal and financial decisions (aside from Rocky's brain damage, of course.) There just doesn't seem to be a need for them to grant power of attorney to anyone at all. It's merely a plot contrivance because Stallone wanted to bring Rocky back to his gritty street roots after the silly excesses of Rocky IV.
I always thought it was that Paulie was given a bunch of stuff ( paperwork for stuff like visas, etc) for Rocky to sign before heading to Russia and the accountant slipped in the Power of Attorney paperwork telling Paulie it was a form requesting an extension on paying taxes. Paulie even says he had Rocky sign it because he thought it was a tax extensions request form.
"I wish this was 'Eye of the Tiger'!" Well, it's a hip-hop remix of "Conquest," the fight piece used for the fights in "Rocky II", "Rocky III", the opening credits of "Rocky V", and "Rocky Balboa."
@@crankfastle8138 and george washington duke is based off of Don King. part 5 is probably the closest rocky/creed movie that's close to reality. I wouoldn't say it's the besto or worst of these movies but it sure is the realest
r.i.p. Burt Young, "Paulie", who passed away recently, was actually a professional boxer, and perhaps the only one who really knew boxing, writer and painter, in fact you can see him painting in the various "Rocky" films
Agree with your summary on this one. Like most of the weakest movies in their franchises it provides more story to the lore which is a bonus. Great reaction as always Jen, can't wait for the next!
I love the first two Rocky movies the most, all of the characters are so consistent in Rocky and Rocky II - and I'm just glad you already reacted to them. Really interested in your take on Balboa though.
Giving this some love with a rewatch and I'm enjoying it more second time around , I loved your reaction first time ofc I'm just appreciating your awesomeness more this viewing 🔥 the music choices basically were not the best and the movie suffers from it but overall it's really not as bad as people make it out to be . Cheers for always making me smile Jen you're the best 🔥💙🔥💙
I agree. This movie isn't on the same level as the older ones. Loved your analysis of how this one compared to the others, Jen! Well, I guess we might as well finish out the series and watch Rocky Balboa! Lol :)
I grew up watching Rocky one through five. I never understood the heat for five. I always thought it was a great ending that had heart … But I was in for a surprise, my junior year of high school, to see a great sendoff in Rocky Balboa
I'm not really a fan of this series, but I did like the emphasis in this film on shady promoters and dangerous concussions. Generally in these movies every punch would be lethal in real life, but the movies ignore the consequences, just some cuts and bruises. Hanging with Jen is always a good time, and her POV on the movie is excellent. Watching this reminded me of a Simpsons gag when Homer boxes. Dr. Hibbert: "You have a unique genetic condition known as Homer Simpson Syndrome." Homer: "Ohh, why me??"
The flashback scene with mickey in the gym gets me every time and it might be the weakest movie in the franchise, but i’ll never pass on watching more rocky especially when Jen is reacting to it.
Hey Hey there Jen Murray. Hope you are doing well. Always love your reactions.😊 I feel like with this one he came full circle. He won the fight with Drago, but lost all the money. Money help us stay comfortable, but family is more important. It's not the end of the series, there's a couple more movies left. Have a good night 😉👌
Appreciate your perspective on this film. You make some very good points! I grew up watching it so I only saw it through rose-colored glasses. It has such an early 90s feel to it so that may be why I have great nostalgia for it. Rocky IV remains my all time fave (because it was the first one I ever saw and I must have seen it 50 times). Only later in life did I manage to watch the other ones and gained a new perspective and appreciation for them. Looking forward to your reaction on the next one!
In Memoriam: Burgess Meredith (1907-1997) Sage Stallone (1976-2012) Tommy Morrison (1969-2013) John G. Avildsen (1935-2017) Burt Young (1940-2023) And though he didn’t appear in the film: Carl Weathers (1948-2024)
19:38 Exactly how long of a period of time did this movie transpire over? It had to take a while for Tommy Gunn to compile a 22-0 record. And those were major fights if he worked his way up to being the #1 contender(and eventual champ).
Yeah you can see how as much as this kinda works in the overall story, it was just a misstep on many levels too. Thankfully they came back to fix things later :)
Well, considering where Rocky was in the first movie ( alone, tiny-tiny apartment) to where he is in Rocky 5 (Wife, son, decent house) he sort of came out ahead.
I say this under every Rocky 5 reaction, but the original version was much darker. The music is more ominous, none of the "he took my room!" stuff is in there, and Rocky actually dies at the end from trauma to the brain. But Hollywood never likes to kill off franchises that they can squeeze for more money, so they made Stallone change it. The original cut is on RUclips if you want to watch it. One part I wish they had left in is when the fight is over Rocky holds out his hand to help Tommy up and Tommy looks ashamed. Whereas in this version we just assume he never learns his lesson.
I don’t know why everyone puts this one down. In my opinion it’s just as good as all the others. I like the different take on the end fight being a street fight. 💯🔥🤙🏽😎
IRL, boxers really go through it! I encountered Muhammad Ali 3 times in my career. He was with his daughter every time. The last time I saw him was at the NYNY casino in Las Vegas. He certainly was not his former self. I felt so bad for them both. The years had not been good to him. Thanks for the ROCKY journey Jen. Your compassion and sympathy are your best traits. Just one of the reasons why I'm always here...Eric 😊
@@Maverick25ish The last time I saw him and his daughter, I had a side conversation with her. And she expressed that boxing had alot to do with the state he was in at the time. Yes, I did know that he suffered from that.
I remember Stallone saying that, at his age, Rocky shouldn't be able to win a boxing match, but he could still win a street fight with no rules hence the climactic brawl in "Rocky V." I think George Foreman helped make the idea of an old boxer still being able to hold his own in the ring more plausible and helped open the way for "Rocky Balboa" (my very close second place favorite movie in the franchise).
The promotor is a take on the famous boxin promotor/Charlatan/former criminal Don King. Don King put on all the big fights in the 80's and 90's most notably the Mike Tyson fights.
15:00 I agree wholeheartedly. The music in this film kinda throws me off too. I prefer the gold old strings and trumpets of Bill Conti. Even Rocky IV's music was better than this.
I love that you're going through all the adventures of the Italian Stallion, Jen 👏 I saw this in the cinema as a child. I had a goofy friend who wanted to be called Rocky after watching it. Needless to say I did not do *that*! It's an interesting movie in the way it attempts to return to the milieu of the original Rocky with the John Avildsen back too. It's sad to see the ill-fated Sage Stallone as Rocky's son. Tommy "the Machine" Gunn! Lucky he had that surname. LOL Edit: One of the doctors at the beginning would go on to play a bra salesman in a hilarious episode featuring a bra for men called the Manssiere or the Bro ☺️
Great reaction Jen it’s just too bad. His son died after this movie it’s not as good as the other movies, but it has its own style and he was betrayed worse than any villain. He took him and told him everything, and he gave him nothing to be beaten, he went back to his roots, thanks for the fun one more to go. It is worth watching Rocky Balboa Creed series where Rocky becomes Mick at least for the first two until next time.
Tommy Gunn, was played by real boxer, Tommy Morrison, Tommy Morrison, was the son of Robert Morrison, Robert morrison, was the brother, of one Marion Michael Morrison, AKA....John Wayne, Tommy Morrison, was John Wayne's nephew
Even though I do like some of the parts in this movie, like the part with Mickey, I miss the feel of the other movies too. The money being all gone is the worst of it. Yes, it's never been the most important thing to the Balboa's, but that was crazy. Honestly though, it's the weakest, but I still enjoy a Rocky movie (especially with you this time Jen.) Elton John was a nice touch. I feel like you will enjoy Rocky Balboa and the movies moving forward. Live long and prosper!!!!
You are going to LOVE Rocky Balboa. I know the first two were amazing, but I actually think that this last Rocky movie is the best of them. And then it gets better when you move on to the Creed trilogy.
Great and honest reaction Jen! YOU WILL like "Rocky Balboa/Rocky 6. I'll only say it's the sequel that most matches the first "Rocky " in terms of recapturing the "charm" that made people like the original. PLEASE REACT TO Stallone's 1981 "NIGHTHAWKS"!!! THEE -Most underrated cop movie of all time!!! NYPD cop Deke DaSilva (Stallone) fights international terrorism on American soil 20 years before 9-11-2001!!!! Yes! Great movie.
'Rocky Balboa' is amazing - expectations were low and it brought Stallone back from the wilderness!
The irony - “Paulie’s not a fighter”, while in real life Burt Young was a very competent boxer for the Marine Corps.

Unreal! I never knew that.

After the marine's he trained with Charley Goldman, who had famously trained undefeated heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano.

I LOVE that slow-mo shot of Rocky at 22:02. Great cinematography.
One the strengths of V is the realism. So many, many boxers go bankrupt and end up with CTE
Even Mike Tyson had a street fight in real life against Mitch Green
@@rxtsec1greens interview after is legendary
@@crankfastle8138 and george washington duke is based off of Don King. part 5 is probably the closest rocky/creed movie that's close to reality. I wouoldn't say it's the besto or worst of these movies but it sure is the realest
r.i.p. Burt Young, "Paulie", who passed away recently, was actually a professional boxer, and perhaps the only one who really knew boxing, writer and painter, in fact you can see him painting in the various "Rocky" films
Tony Burton (Duke) was also a skilled boxer, and by all accounts an amazing chess player too.
RIP SAGE, RIP TOMMY , RIP BURT
TONY, CARL, BURGESS...
Fun fact: Tommy Morrison was John Wayne’s grand.nephew. Died from a heart attack brought on by complications of AIDS.

A few ago I ran the Rocky steps and saw the statue. It was as awesome.
Agree with your summary on this one. Like most of the weakest movies in their franchises it provides more story to the lore which is a bonus. Great reaction as always Jen, can't wait for the next!
13:24: That ring was where we first see Rocky fighting in the first film.
Best line: "Sue me...for what?"
The writers in the press conference were all real life sportswriters and boxing commentators.
The flashback scene with mickey in the gym gets me every time and it might be the weakest movie in the franchise, but i’ll never pass on watching more rocky especially when Jen is reacting to it.
Thanks D!!
I think 3 was the weakest. And four was fair. But kinda auto pilot.
But then came five. And brought back the magic from the first two.
I highly respect your opinion, Jen. on why you liked this one the least. I think this one is underrated. I hope you enjoy Rocky Balboa. :)
1:24 Robert "Rocky" Balboa Jr. is played by the late Sage Stallone...NVM you just said that yourself right after I commented. LOL
Hi Jen hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Thanks John you too!
Hey Hey there Jen Murray. Hope you are doing well. Always love your reactions.😊
I feel like with this one he came full circle. He won the fight with Drago, but lost all the money. Money help us stay comfortable, but family is more important. It's not the end of the series, there's a couple more movies left. Have a good night 😉👌
I'll find others here, but I actually like this movie a lot and consider it "good"
Appreciate your perspective on this film.
You're my Champion Jen Murray 🥊🏆

You sure ?
@lexkanyima2195 positive. I'm from the Philly area. I also listened th these guys on the radio and tv.
@@stephenhershey1414 ohh and can you name them ?
Rest in peace Tommy Morrison.
Rocky's last professional sanctioned fight is in Rocky 3 against Clubber Lang. Everything after that is unsanctioned/exhibition.
I honestly think that if the music was changed in this movie it would’ve been much better
I agree
@@jenmurrayxoif you look back there is confusion
One the best rocky movie 😢.
19:38 Exactly how long of a period of time did this movie transpire over? It had to take a while for Tommy Gunn to compile a 22-0 record. And those were major fights if he worked his way up to being the #1 contender(and eventual champ).
2 years maybe. Tyson went 19-0 in his first year boxing.
Slys real son, played his son in this movie, unfortunately he passed away not long after this movie.
That's not entirely true, he died 22 years after this movie (movie was in 1990, he passed in 2012)
I think the reason for the denouement was the fact that this was intended to be the wrap up of the Rocky story.
"He may won a few fights but a Rocky Balboa he'll never be" was by real sportscaster from Philadelphia WCAU Channel 10 How Meltzer
I can't wait for you to get to Rocky Balboa.
Can't wait for Rocky Balboa reaction!!!!
It they had editing right, it would be a box office hit.
Yeah but Ali got parkinsons desease
👏👌
👏👌
@@Maverick25ish The last time I saw him and his daughter, I had a side conversation with her. And she expressed that boxing had alot to do with the state he was in at the time. Yes, I did know that he suffered from that.
Oh yeah no doubt that boxing really can fuck you up i mean its boxing for a living getting the hell knocked out of you@@e.d.2096
They are all special especially if you've grown up with the films, Waiting in then all coming out. You know what I mean if you are a fighter.
YES!! Watch Rocky Balboa. It is easily one of the best of the series.
For a light hearted comedic take on underground bare knuckle boxing Jen check out EVER WHICH WAY BUT LOOSE with Clint Eastwood.
Don't ever be afraid to call someone a Bumb❤
I remember Stallone saying that, at his age, Rocky shouldn't be able to win a boxing match, but he could still win a street fight with no rules hence the climactic brawl in "Rocky V." I think George Foreman helped make the idea of an old boxer still being able to hold his own in the ring more plausible and helped open the way for "Rocky Balboa" (my very close second place favorite movie in the franchise).
Why it is a risk ?
I was so hoping you'd make this video!
Rocky is a LIFE fighter. The next one is my favorite.
The promotor is a take on the famous boxin promotor/Charlatan/former criminal Don King. Don King put on all the big fights in the 80's and 90's most notably the Mike Tyson fights.
Maestro Jen speaks the truth on the 🧀 hip hop 🎶 🎵
I freakin love hip hop but it didn't suit the movie at all
15:00 I agree wholeheartedly. The music in this film kinda throws me off too. I prefer the gold old strings and trumpets of Bill Conti. Even Rocky IV's music was better than this.
Rocky Balboa, Creed and Creed 2 are great. Creed 3 is good as well. The best part of this movie was the Micky flashback.
Well I can say I now know what denouement means 👍👍
I love that you're going through all the adventures of the Italian Stallion, Jen 👏 I saw this in the cinema as a child. I had a goofy friend who wanted to be called Rocky after watching it. Needless to say I did not do *that*! It's an interesting movie in the way it attempts to return to the milieu of the original Rocky with the John Avildsen back too. It's sad to see the ill-fated Sage Stallone as Rocky's son.
Tommy "the Machine" Gunn! Lucky he had that surname. LOL
Edit: One of the doctors at the beginning would go on to play a bra salesman in a hilarious episode featuring a bra for men called the Manssiere or the Bro ☺️
Such a stylish garmet on Mr. Costanza 😂
Pro wrestling great Terry Funk choreographed the street fight.
NO ONE ELSE has reacted to it and every Sylvester Stallone fan loves it! It's the movie that convinced audiences that he can definitely play other roles well besides "Rocky"! If you react to it- enjoy being the first to do so! God bless you 🙏
